Guest Reviews
- Bindi (7/5): Good - Location is great, room size was good. There is a communal fridge, tea/ coffee area. You only get your room code like 15 minutes before checkin time unless you have agreed and paid to checkin early. Minimal reception..generally for a few hours in the morning only. If you get there earlier there is a lovely chocolate cafe opposite. Some lamps didn’t work, but I was happy with value for money and location.
- Nicolae (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tatjana (1/5): A good accommodation has turned into a cesspool - This accommodation has turned to the sewer, where the anti-sanitary conditions reached such a level that state control bodies must carry out a sanitary inspection as soon as possible. Doubtful financial schemes bypassing payment instruments on Booking also raise questions.
- Anonymous (8/5): Great location in historic building. - Location was fantastic. Historic building is beautiful. Bed linen could be better/smarter. Clean behind bed headboard. Fan in the room would be good as it was hot and not really able to open windows/doors. Blinds at the window of ground floor room onto courtyard should be provided as lighting was poor. Coffee pods provided in the bedroom to use in kitchen in the morning would have been a nice touch. No staff present on the property despite there being the ability to do so.
- Jacqueline (6/5): A short stay, good location, couldn’t have stayed longer! - The location and its charm. The bed was comfortable. It’s lighting which seemed to disguise its need for a little makeover
- Kellouti (1/5): Bad - The room was not as shown in the pictures. This is called fraud on customers and the room is very very small.🥵 The room doesn't have a TV or mirror and the bathroom is outside the room, meaning there is no privacy for the guests. The bathroom doesn't have a key so you not can lock the door and take a shower safely. The bathroom is very small, even the simplest things are not there, for example, there is no toilet paper, no soap or shampoo. Not everything that is in the pictures was there, a very big difference, this really bothered us. We didn't stay the whole night, an hour later we left to a much better hotel. I demand my money back 😏
- Carvalho (1/5): Bad -
- Nicolae (10/5): Perfect - Location and room design -
- Aminat (10/5): Exceptional - Just an amazing place overall! The architecture, the decor, the back yard… it was all such a vibe!
- William (6/5): Pleasant -
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing to be able to stay in a place with such history! Thank you! ❤️
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional -
- Spyros (9/5): Great stay, location is perfect - We loved the view and the fact is was right next to the cathedral. IMPRESSIVE A bit old equipment and furnishings
- Aleksandra (7/5): Not quite what I expected - The style of the place was quite unique . Old building with history and interesting architecture. The location is exactly in the city centre so it is pretty convenient for shopping and exploring the bars and restaurants It was noisy in the hotel and also outside.
The rooms looked very impressive in the beginning but then you notice old leaks and peeling paint on the ceiling. There were no windows to open , just the doors.
The tea and coffee were finished the first morning we were there and not refilled the next day either.
Water pressure was terrible. I had to hold the shower head to be able to shower properly
- Koen (1/5): Bad experience - Not clean and too much noise from the street
- Daniel (9/5): Superb -
- Matt (10/5): We’ll be coming back again - Absolutely beautiful location.
Beautiful old building, absolutely breathtaking views . For the price absolutely nothing couldn’t ask for more.
- Chanel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Catherine (7/5): Central location and amazing terrace. - Very central location and an historic property literally in touching distance of the cathedral. It was very quirky. Basic kitchen
- Chanel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jonah (5/5): Passable -
- Elvan (2/5): Very poor -
- Olga (6/5): Pleasant - Location is absolutely amazing and perfectly central . The atmosphere of the place is as you are in 16th century house for sure. Really great spirit . The toilet was broken and closed in the room with Privat bath , it was so uncomfortable to go to the public one on the floor. The toilet in the room with external bath was broken as well (the door could not be closed/locked neither inside nor outside) . I ve seen that in some of the feedbacks before but was sure it will be repaired but it was not.
- Alexandra (3/5): Bad - The hotel was extremely dirty and run-down. You could hear absolutely every sound from all the other rooms. The shower was leaking, and there was no soap provided. I can’t say for sure, but it seemed like the bed linen hadn’t been changed. The smell in the room was terrible.
- Diogo (1/5): Dirty, awful management, no communication! - The location was central. We booked for 6 guests, there were not enough linens or towels for everyone. The apartment was really dirty, a bag of garbage left on the terrace, mouse poop and spider webs and dust everywhere, just gross! I contacted the property after numerous phone calls and they did not reply nor deliver any extra linens and they still have not replied to my messages. We had to sleep 3 adults in one bed as the other beds/sofas were too dirty to sleep on without sheets. Really an awful property and management overall! Horrible service and dirty place!
- Giulia (6/5): G - The property is located right in the city centre, great location. Host super responsive and helpful The property is not clean. Ants everywhere, dust
Everywhere. Barely any amenities. The windows int the living room, one set doesn’t open at all, the other one is broken. In addition, it can get very noisy due to its central location.
- Lennon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Açelya (7/5): incredible ambiance - incredible room and ambiance design… The external bathroom reserved for us dont have a key so anyone could habe use it and the door wasnt closed all the way… and we didnt recive the door or the keys locking numbers.. we wait a little bit then a sweet girl come and handle it for us
- Harriet (8/5): Unique, comfortable exceptional location - Very unique Needs some maintenence
- Alice (10/5): Very nice - Very charming A bit cold
- Nathan (9/5): Superb -
- Kristoffer (4/5): Know what to expect - The location is excellent and the building itself has a lot of charm. It's a beautiful building that is connected to the Cathedral of Our Lady with many interesting details. So, the building overall is in dire need of repairs and cleaning. On my arrival a cleaner was smoking in the yard with the door open so I was greeted with tobacco smoke. The very first thing I encountered were the issues with the room lock. It works completely fine from the inside but was jammed from the outside making it really difficult to get open. I spent a good amount of time trying to get back to my room every single time I had gone out. Other guests were struggling with their keys aswell so it seems to be a common issue. Once I got in my room I noticed that there were absolutely no toiletries: no soap, no shampoo, not even toilet paper. So I had to visit the grocery store right after arriving. And once I came back, a mouse was running on the floor and hid behind the shower. I was scared to leave anything on the floor or even look under the bed in fear of more mice, which actually did come back to greet me again during my stay. I suspect there's a mouse hole behind the shower since that is always where they ran. The cabinet in the bathroom was full of dead bugs, aswell as the blanket on the bed. There were spiderwebs absolutely everywhere. The room had a safety box, which of course was broken and didn't work. Also a coat rack which was also extremely uneven and worn out that it kept falling over. Literally everything was broken and dirty.
- Egle (10/5): Absolutely stunning place - Everything! The location, the history, the whole appearance of the building inside and out and most of it all the terrace! Nothing
- Ashley (8/5): Fantastic location and building. - Location and building were fantastic, right by the cathedral but not too loud. Bedroom was fine, not as nice as photos. Kitchen and yard were welcome extras. Bins and outdoor ashtrays were overflowing. Not enough toilet roll. Access was difficult, the code for the keybox was emailed late (didn't receive a text as promised); we only got in by chance when we saw a cleaner, the only time we saw any staff during our two day stay.
- Anna (1/5): I have learned that low price is not always everything - I do NOT recommend this place to anyone. - Location is great. When we came in around 19:00, we notice the toilet was clogged. I immediately called the host and he said it’s very busy but he will send somebody over. I asked if the issue will be resolved before 23:00. The answer way yes. Unfortunately when we got back the toilet was still not working. We had to use the outside common toilet. It was dirty and disgusting. The room itself was dirty and I doubted the bedsheets as well, so we bought our own pillow cases! (We forgot them there). The door to the bathroom is not really closed so we were sleeping in a room with lovely smell from the clogged toilet. The air in the room was in general very thick and smelled like an old house (who wouldn’t be a problem - It’s a historical building), we weren’t able to open any windows to get some fresh air in. There were stains on the bed and pillows dirty.
In general, one of my worst experiences with booking in my life. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. I chose the price over recommendations. Will never do that again.
- Jameesha (4/5): Disappointing - It was a nice area. Easy to find. When entering the build. There was a scent. The bathroom didn't have a fresh room of toilet paper there was ⅓ left back. As if someone else was in there. Knowing that there was 3 persons staying in this room. The old school feeling was ok. But still didn't feel fresh enough.
- Ilias (9/5): Pleasant Stay - Location, the room had a nice feeling, the staff in the property was helpful, Check in time is a little bit inconvenient
- Luka (9/5): Superb -
- Branca (6/5): Pleasant - Perfect location. I booked a room with a private external bathroom, but the bathroom did not have a key and was used by other people as well. I paid for a service that I did not receive. It was unpleasant to see that other people used the bathroom. Late check in and very early check out. 10 am is too early.
- Paine (7/5): Very fair for the price, but could use a few updates - Comfortable bed, nice view, good heating Shower needed a grip for the head and the neighbours stole my toilet paper
- Narinna (8/5): Very good -
- Anthony (4/5): Disappointing - Location in the centre of the old town was great; and staying in such an old building was a unique experience. The hosts didn’t respond to our messages before, during, and after our stay.
We asked about early check in - no response.
We asked about hot water not working - no response.
We asked about electricity not working on our final night - no response.
We had privately messaged about the above items in the hope of privately providing feedback, but as we had no response we have now opted for a public review.
Appreciate that it is an old building, but as others have said it requires greater investment in the facilities (I assumed the new ownership would have already done this…). More seriously, the issues with hot water and electricity were disappointing to say the least.
- Lucy (8/5): Perfect property & location for a night in a wonderful city! - Fabulous location, great value for money, comfy & super toasty. Amazing property with excellent features! Perfect for a nights stay! Trivial really but the utensil drawer was a bit broken & awkward to open/close. Also no dishwasher tablets nor plug for kitchen sink for washing up. Maybe a hand /drying up towel for kitchen?
- Carolina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Suzanne (8/5): Stunning historic property, quiet and peaceful in the heart of the city centre. - Overwhelmingly stunning property from the 16th Century converted into accommodation. Quiet and peaceful yet in the heart of beautiful Antwerp. The clever layout (a mixture of formal and informal) allowed me to read comfortably and quietly while my daughter did some studying. There was nothing I didn’t like about the property. Any questions were answered quickly in the app and the cleaning staff went out their way to help me when I had a question. I usually go to modern spa hotels so this was new for me. I will definitely come back again.
- Moreno (9/5): Superb -
- Emmanouil (7/5): Centrally located in a historic building - Centrally located, quiet room in a historic building
- Bettina (8/5): Very good - Great location. Amazing place. It's like a museum. The room was beautiful and the old features very interesting. Booking and access to room was easy. As other reviews already stated, it urgently needs some TLC. For the price it is okay but it could be double that with a few touches. I understand that an old building like that smells a bit musky but the interiors could probably be cleaned more thoroughly/ replaced to reduce this. Some decent sheets (that fit the mattress) and towels would make it a little more attractive too. Common areas are used by all guests but will not be cleaned by all guests, so the hosts should keep s closer eye on that. It's a real pity to have to give such a bad review but it is such a gorgeous place with so much potential and only a few small touches could make it amazing.
- Sam (7/5): Perfect location, but prepare to swap modern comfort for unique gothic charm. - Glorious location- and beautifully quirky. Not particularly comfortable- and the shower was on the top floor accessed by a very steep and precarious staircase.
- Eric (10/5): Exceptional -
- Olena (8/5): Very good - After reading the terrible reviews, I expected much worse. No need to bring soap and toilet paper with you) Settled in the room I booked (N), the instructions for check-in were clear. The room was clean, spacious shower, beautiful interior. The place is not just central and historic, this house literally has walls that go into the cathedral and has a common courtyard with it. Apparently, the house used to belong to the cathedral, judging by the decorative elements. It would be nice if the owners could provide information about the history of the house. The price for such a central location is very low, so some drawbacks were expected. I have to confirm some of the problems.
1: The public space is neglected, and the furniture is dirty. The courtyard is beautiful with a wonderful atmosphere of history but not cleaned.
2. Strong bad smell of old age and sewage.
3. There was Wi-Fi, but it was weak.
4. Only two large towels and one small one (for hands and face) for three people.
5. They sent a request to pay the tourist tax, already paid by me at the time of booking. And they automatically sent a tax reminder twice. If you have already paid it to booking.com just ignore it, don't pay again)
I don't consider the noise from the street a disadvantage, because you see that you are booking a room in an old building in a central place with bars. This is simply not a place for sensitive sleepers.
- Cristina (10/5): Exceptional - Best view in town. A little cramped.
- Tom (9/5): Superb - Nice centralized location near points of interest. Lots of restaurants in walking distance. Easily accessible by public transit. by
- Antonina (3/5): Disappointed - Location is very good The description on the booking site is very different from what you get.
We were promised (by pictures and also by communication with the host) three double beds and two single beds, but we received only 2 doubles and one single. The other two were there but no bedding.
The stairs are so narrow that you can’t go there with a suitcase. Nit a chance. This was not mentioned on the booking site.
We ordered breakfast but the order was missed. I communicated about the order with the host befirehand, but still no breakfast.
- Paul (4/5): Disappointing. It was lucky I just wanted a room for a night for travel; but I should have been given the apartment that - Despite several attempts to message you, I was still given another address to the one I booked. I booked the property in the profile photos, but was given a far less interesting property in the next street.
- Annabel (9/5): Gorgeous historical stay - Excellent location, gorgeous views of the cathedral, comfortable beds and beautiful interior. Foul smell around the property of drains
- Bailey (6/5): Pleasant -
- Andrei (10/5): Anvers Beer Trip - The location is great. We had a lovely stay in Anvers. Close to the Katedral, a few meters away from the bars and restaurants. Elfde Gebod bar is 20 m away. The rooms are nice and gives you the feeling of old days. Rustic air. The host are nice, we had a great trip. Also, the check in fairly simple. Nothing to complain about.
- Eugenia (8/5): Truly atmospheric and perfectly located! - Absolutely unique accommodation in the very historical center of Antwerpen in the building of the 16th century! It felt like as if we were brought back in time to the MIddle Ages, or at least to some antique store or museum. Exceptional location in the vicinity of the Cathedral. Terrace detached to the cathedral with a splendid view and entrance covered with kiwi trees. Rare place provoking special feelings. Truly atmospheric and perfectly located. Something that might be considered as inconvenience and could be improved (no parking, street bustle, seemingly shabby style) is impossible to be improved due to the specifics of this exclusive place (location in a historic building directly in the historic center). It is expectable and understandable.
- Brigitte (7/5): Worth the experience of the place - I really appreciated that there are people willing to take care of this precious old building, despite some flaws. We loved all tiles, the courtyard outside our room at the base of the Cathedral, the old fresco in our room. When we arrived there were some unexpected problems, but the host did their best to solve this. We appreciated this too. Thank you! There is very little privacy in room L because on one side you have the shared courtyard, though nice, other guests use it too, it connects directly to the bar/ reception on the ground floor and you hear literally everything in the next room and in the courtyard. The apartments apparently are more private. The sound insulation is non existent. So bring ear plugs. Would give a much higher review if it wasn't for this. In my opinion it was still worth staying here, it's a unique place.
- Filip (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shona (10/5): Sleeping Next to a Cathedral is a once off experience not to be missed - There were so many things we loved about this property. We video called family to show them around the roof top terrace which had a fabulous backdrop of Cathedral, you could actually touch the walls, unique and beautiful features such as the hand painted doors details a different period in time . This place was absolutely value for money so long as you mobile as stairs are steep. Needs a deep clean and needs decluttering.
- Martin (10/5): Superior - Incredible place on the rooftop in the ancient city center.
Cosy and comfortable. The owners are super-friendly and supportive.
Thank you so much!
- Destin (8/5): Very good - Location was amazing
Interesting old building Small details could make this place a lot better such as having hand soap in the washroom
- Ghislain (9/5): Superb -
- Elizabeth (5/5): It could have been a fantastic place but unfortunately not up to standard yet! - The room was large and right in the center Cobwebs in the room corners, not told when we booked that they didn’t make the beds, one tiny piece of soap in the basin none in the shower , half a roll of toilet paper that ran out by the afternoon and no spare! This was for three people plus other things!
- Derick (9/5): Superb - Clean comfortable room Nothing
- Jonathan (8/5): Very good -
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jonathan (9/5): Superb -
- Mohammed (1/5): Bad - Just the location If I ask you how do you feel when you see the rats coming around you and running between your legs . I let you to judge .
- Marcelabum (8/5): It was nice staying there - The location is central More on cleaniness
- Rosen (5/5): Passable - It was very noisy during the night. There are a lot of restaurants around ,which are working at least till 24,00,not possible to sleep.
- Daniel (8/5): Very good - Excellent location
Suits the area well
Clean
Shared kitchenette was nice
Dirt cheap The bathroom could have been better
Bed and pillows were okay
- Victoriia (10/5): Exceptional - nice and pleasant atmosphere, very nice and friendly staff, incredible architecture, location, recommend:)
- Ilga (10/5): Just Amazing! Our family did not want to leave. If you love history and desing, you must stay here. If you do not like o - Memorable stay in Living History. Rubens paintings next door. Just stunning experience to stay in museum like property. With easy fixes regards tidying up could be even better.
- Anna (8/5): Very good - Fantastic location and the owners are very nice! Could use some renovation, the installations are quite dated but it is obvious that the owners are doing everything they can to make it comfortable
- James (10/5): We had such a lovely stay the host was really helpful and nice and the location is great! - Location, staff and hotel was all really nice would definitely stay again!
- Tamara (5/5): Passable -
- Jaye (6/5): Cute place, just needs a little more attention to bring it up a level. - Location was great. On a small square, very close to center. Very walkable area.
Room was great, very comfortable bed & bedding. Killer shower with rain head & body sprays. Shower looks new but mold/dirt starting to build up. Room was spotless but common areas felt unclean. Furniture in upstairs common/kitchen area old & soiled. Very old building needing more TLC. New owners, I’m sure they’re working on it. Outdoor patio area smells of rotten foliage. Front door difficult to open. Kitchen adequate but they could provide salt, pepper, napkins, coffee creamer.
Property not as large or impressive as the internet photos make it appear.
- Osei (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hajar (10/5): Exceptional - Great location, with a quite room even if we were in the midde of the city, you can see the beauty of old style in the building, very clean and the stuff was nice.. definitely will come back again... All was good for what we wanted
- Anja (3/5): Worst cost benefit ratio ever - --- Got a room that is not in the photos without any old traditional style apart from the bed, that was from the 1970ies- so no reason to book this much to expensive place. Party in front of the door till 3 in the morning: free ear plugs in the bar. External bathroom smells, just one pair of towels. Individual Questions to my booking were not answered, but I was ask to pay additional city tax, that was included in my original booking. ... And many more...
- Danny (7/5): Good - Middle of the City, nice Authentic rooms. It's part of a big city, but its a little bit noisy. Alsof the room was feeling moist. But thats part of the authentic feeling
- Tom (10/5): The beginning and entry was shocked 🫢 us badly surprisingly the bedroom was so nice . - The location was nice we enjoyed a lot 🤩 Staircase 🥸
- Clara (9/5): Superb - location was great and the room was beautiful
- Odai (8/5): Very good - an interesting type of experience, with no staff and all, everything is automated and the location is amazing a bit not comfortable especially the bed
- Louise (9/5): A quirky stay right in the heart of the action - Such a quirky apartment in the perfect location to explore beautiful Antwerp. The roof terrace lets the property down, there are lots of overgrown plants, moss and leaves and most of the furniture needs replacing. It could be such a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by with a little TLC.
- Gianluca (10/5): Exceptional - Historic, pretty and super good location. There is a kitchen and a seating area which was really nice to use when we git bored of being in our room. It also had a secret outside area that backs onto the historic cathedral. Nothing
- Charlotte (9/5): Super quirky, super comfortable, right up against magnificent cathedral walls. - Gorgeous decor, quirky throughout. Extremely well located for exploring old Antwerp, museums and the river. Clean, comfortable with communal kitchen area and bar. Our room by rose window of cathedral with a kiwi tree between us and cathedral walls. Front door is on a little square with great bar/ cafe and Quetzal chocolate cafe. Nothing. It is all great.
- Magda (6/5): Pleasant -
- Jacques (8/5): Very old historical cosy stay - Cosy room with private bathroom separate but only 10 meters away. Stunning cathedral location and central to many monuments, restaurants, bars or tourist shops.
We didn't see staff much (only in passing) but they were always friendly and had big smiles. Bed top throw was a bit musky and noise travels relatively easily but largely a pleasant stay!
- Norbert (9/5): It was very pleasant stay, where had the opportunity to meet the young owner, who was very helpful. - It was centrally located, under the shadows of the Cathedral. Very pleasant stay, as although there were bars and restaurants one could still manage to sleep. Maybe a general comment, the lack of Air conditioning, and the old smell.
- Paula (10/5): Exceptional - Historic and incredibly beautiful accommodation. If you are interested in history, architectural, social or religious and want to experience staying in an ancient building this very special accommodation is the choice for you. At the same time it was warm, clean and comfortable. The accommodation is perfectly placed in the old town with everything you need on your doorstep. It was fantastic. Nothing, I loved it and would definitely return.
- Begüm (1/5): We do not like it. - The only good thing about the hotel is location. It is close to the center. There was not electricity in the room. The only functioning light was in bathroom. We had to use its plug to charge our phones. Since we arrived at night and there was not electricity, we could not see anything in the room. I tried to reach somebody but nobody replied. We only see someone when we were leaving (after 2 nights).
- Kadirguzel (1/5): Terrible. Scary. - I didn't like anything. They had reserved the worst room. There is no soap. There is no shampoo. There is no water heater in the room. The bathroom is in a different place from the room. There are no treats. There are no flappers. he doesn't deserve 7.1 points.
- Liew (5/5): Passable - Restaurants and shopping at the doorstep.
Ancient decorations Our apartment is located at 2nd floor to assess using a narrow sparrow staircase. It is not suitable for elders, young children and those with weak knees.
The apartment is not clean. Bath room located in the attic
to assess using a sparrow staircase. Mattress in both rooms in bad conditions.
- Catherine (1/5): It was so unsuitable we could not stay, and had to find alternate arrangements last minute while traveling with children - It was in an interesting building, with 2 balconies. The property was dirty, and entirely unsuitable for a family. The staircase was about to collapse. One of the bathrooms was in shambles, and the other one was moldy. The kitchen was filthy and unhygienic.
- Elizabeth (9/5): Great, thanks - Location. Old world feel
- Ana (10/5): Cathedral next to it 😄 - Location was amazing, the place was neat and clean
