Guest Reviews
- Hossin (8/5): -
- Sage (9/5): This was a wonderful place to stay in a relatively quiet area of Costa Rica. - The breakfast was very nice, and Jose and Silvia have curated a wonderful space. The garden is lovely and the fish in the creek are fun to watch. There could be screens in the windows.
- Kateřina (9/5): - Beautiful accommodation in a wonderful garden with incredibly helpful owners. We arrived with a flat tire and were immediately offered help and a solution to the situation. Delicious breakfast, great approach to children. We only spent one night here, but everything exceeded our expectations. Even without our knowledge of Spanish, the owners were willing to help with everything. Everything was fine.
Nada
- Rostislav (7/5): - Very authentic experience. Great breakfast. No hot water.
- Tanner (7/5): Good place. Nice owners. - No hot water
- Karolina (8/5): -
- Chrysti (10/5): Excellent hosts, convenient location, charming jungle setting, good value. - When we visit Costa Rica, we don't feel safe driving at night. So, we always stay somewhere about halfway from our final destination. Jose and Sylvia are excellent hosts, their rooms meet our needs, and they are situated in a jungle setting with lots of homemade art. They always make us breakfast before we head out in the morning. They are also only a few minutes from Guapiles if you need something in town. No hot water. Since it's so hot and humid there anyway, we didn't mind a cold shower too much.
- KRISTIEN (10/5): Un lieu enchanteur - Un endroit enchanté !
- Alex (9/5): -
- Birgit (10/5): NICE Bungalows in artful garden setting - Very responsive helpful and lovely owners. We stayed in a triple bungalow (fridge and A/C) with a terrasse overlooking the beautiful garden. Lot of artwork to be discovered. The breakfast was made freshly, eggs, platanos and fruits on a terrasse of the owner's house in the wonderful garden setting. Secure parking was accomodated on the grounds.
We enjoyed our stay at Jose and his wife's house. THANK YOU! It is not luxury, but Pura Vida :-).
Nichts
- Adinda (7/5): Good price/quality ratio - Location, kind host, price. Cold shower, no refrigerator, no mosquito net.
Kalte Dusche
- Rebecca (10/5): - We absolutely loved our stay at Salamandra Lodge. Jose greeted us upon arrival and made sure we had everything we needed. After a long day of travel, it was very pleasant to sit on the porch outside our room to to watch the bit of wildlife on the property and listen to the calming sounds of the creek. It was a great stopover on our way to Tortuguero and I would stay here again.
- Jasmin (9/5): -
Ontbijt is goed verzorgd.
Tuin is leuk Geen fijn bed.
- Daniel (10/5): Beautiful property with excellent hosts close to Tortuguero docks. - Jose and his wife were absolutely amazing hosts. They worked with us on the timing of our arrival, which was much later than expected after the primary road from San Jose was closed.
Jose greeted us, walked us to our room, and even went so far as to provide dinner recommendations in town. On top of that, he provided us with the parking lot gate remote to use ourselves when we got back.
In the morning, they served a delicious breakfast (fruit/tamales) and assisted with directions/guidance for getting to our next destination.
10/10 experience for sure.
Volveremos

- Sheila (10/5): Exceptional - Salamandra is the most beautiful place to say with very unique artwork all over. José is a very kind host and a fantastic cook and made a delicious breakfast for my family and I. We had two rooms with beautiful artwork in both. It is a very easy drive from SJO Airport and was a perfect overnight stop for us on the way to Tortuguero. I wish we had more time to stay and look around at all the wildlife and artwork. Really a very beautiful place.
- Svetlana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Monika (8/5): Great stay at Salamandra Lodge - Friendly owners, beautiful surroundings and great accommodation for one or two nights. It was a bit difficult to communicate with them because of language barrier but it didn’t bother us.
- Douglas (10/5): A restful night in an exquisitely beautiful place - This was a perfect place to stop on the way to Tortuga Road. The owner‘s wife is an artist and her artwork is everywhere, which, makes the place exquisitely beautiful. The breakfast was delicious. A few things to note. The kind owner, Jose, does not speak English, but with pidgin English and pidgin Spanish and Google translator, we did fine. Also, there is no hot water. But we were here for an overnight and it was no big deal. Finally, although the place is nestled in a patch of practically jungle, You can hear highway noise and some noise from surrounding businesses. It was not bothersome enough for us to write this place anything but wonderful!
- Tatyana (9/5): Beautiful jungle pousada with hospitable staff - Jose is super hospitable and helpful!
Territory of this pousada is full of the design details and has 2 local tucanos living there!
Breakfast served by Jose is traditional and interesting. Please check the water in the shower because we didn’t have hot water in our room. It wasn’t big problem as it was hot outside.
- George (7/5): Suitable for stopover between San Jose and Caribbean coast. - Host were very nice and hospitable. Grounds were lush and unique. Meals provided by hosts were very good. No hot water in the unit. Hosts do not speak English, and we do not speak Spanish. But we got by with translation service over our cell phones.
- Gernot (10/5): Exceptional - It's not just accommodation, it's a Costa Rica experience! You shouldn't miss out on trying the delicious dinner that José and his wife prepare. The garden is a paradise for plants, animals and art. In the immediate vicinity you can visit some beautiful trails to waterfalls. Jose can also give good tips for other activities. You have to be aware that this is authentic accommodation in a typical Costa Rican town. So every now and then you will hear a rooster crowing at night. Since the place is easy to get to from the airport, it is also recommended for the first or last nights before arrival or departure.
- Reynolds (8/5): Great place for an overnight stay. Good coffe and breakfast, pretty gardens. Quiet. - The location of the property is excellent for those making a trip to Cahuita, Porto Viejo or other locations, and do not want to drive at night. The town itself is quiet and has full amenities and is right off the main road.
- Comeau (5/5): Interesting to say the least. The grounds were beautiful and we did see toucans in the morning. - The breakfast was delicious and homemade. The hosts gave us individual attention and were very helpful. The location was off the beaten track yet close enough to the main highway that it was convenient as a stopover. It was very rustic and quite unusual. It should be noted that it is not easily accessible as you are required to go up a circular staircase. There was no hot water which surprised us but apparently it was listed in booking.com. The listing indicated a king size bed but it was actual a double. The host offered to give us our money back because of the discrepancy but because he was so nice we did pay the full amount. I wouldn't stay there again.
- Darren (9/5): Wonderful. - Beautiful area with plentiful wildlife. Jose was great! No hot water, but the local ordinance doesn’t allow for water heaters.
- Koch (10/5): Beautiful and very welcoming treat! - Fabulous stay, lodge and surounds verlinken artisticly made, defnatly worth a stay! Dort miss out on it. Most beautiful place we habe seen in costa Rica. With own little river and bird voices. And a very tasty breakfast made just to our wishes. Perfekt stay! Treat yourself to this one!
- Philip (10/5): Exceptional - The place is inspiring, full of amazing original art and the gardens are incredible. There was a little river running just under my balcony! Amazing family run place. The water could be a little hotter in the shower.
- William (9/5): Superb - Jose was extremely kind even though the language barrier made it difficult to communicate, he tried his best with English and was extremely hospitable! The property is absolutely beautiful and feels like you're in your own little tropical world with beautiful art all around you. Jose and Silvia cooked us a delicious dinner for our one night there which I highly recommend. They are obviously very cool cooks! I highly recommend this place as an affordable option. The room itself was a little dirty we thought. The floors were squeaky clean but window sills and upper corners of walls could have been vacuumed. Also, really wish the hot tub was working! :(
Overall, for the price we were happy with this accommodation and think Jose and Silvia do a wonderful job hosting guests. Thank you so much Jose!
- Christopher (10/5): An amazing experience almost like a dream in a rainforest. - If I could rate this place 100 I would! Andres and his wife are the sweetest and most welcoming people ever! My girlfriend and I were stuck from torrential rainfall on our way back from Puerto Viejo to San Jose and had to stop and find shelter. We were not ready for this gen of a place. It’s an oasis with charm! A stream on the property and animals. Andres and his wife made us tamales fruit and coffee in the morning.
- Xuemei (10/5): Once in a lifetime experience stay. - The hosts, Jose and Sylvia are wonderful - super friendly, and informative. Every corner of the place they built is surrounded by perfect combination nature and arts.
- Justin (10/5): Great property, worth the visit - Wonderful bed-and-breakfast style property. The owners are extremely generous and friendly and the room was clean and quiet. The sound of the stream and frogs outside our room was relaxing each night. New and interesting breakfasts were prepared for us each day in the garden. Since we were in the area for birding, we were up by 5am, but we were still treated to thoughtfully prepared breakfasts this early! Good birds on the property itself, such as wood rail, toucans, squirrel cuckoo, and more. Birding the neighborhood was also of interest. Parking was provided with space for one guest behind their gate. Many food options nearby in Guapiles. The positives outweighed the negatives.
Possible improvements are adding hotting water to the shower (owners should consider Thermo Ducha), and sealing the air gaps around the doors to improve the efficiency of the portable AC. The AC worked fine on dry mode once the gaps were temporarily sealed, though we cleaned the unit's dust filters ourself first.
- Barbara (10/5): Magnificent place. Can't wait to go back. - This had to be the most beautiful location. We were so surprised and in awe. Jose was so kind and accommodating, pointing out macaws and other interesting sights.
- Alonso (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bri (6/5): This is a really nice experience. I wish I could’ve enjoyed it more. - Jose was amazing!! They were so kind. they adjusted breakfast for me. They were so understanding when I became ill and needed to leave early. I felt like my room could’ve been a little cleaner in the bathroom.
- Cecilia (10/5): A small gem - A hidden small gem. The room was very quiet, immersed in the nature in the garden. Breakfast was superb and the owners were very nice to us, but hey offered us even a coffee with cookies, very appreciate. Thank you very much, we will be back if in Costa Rica.,
- Kim (10/5): Lovely place - Very lovely place by lovely people. The breakfast was freshly made and very good.
- Heiko (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (1/5): STAY AWAY - FAR AWAY - NOTHING…!!! The owner, after taking our (me & my girlfriend of 3 years) ID, Passport & cash for the room walked us to where we were supposed to stay. He returned within 10-minutes & said we had to leave, handed me my cash (for the room) back, and escorted us off of the property. He refused to allow us to stay & gave no explanation - It seems he didn’t like the fact that I had a 6-pack of Heineken (0 alcohol)…???
- Volodymyr (9/5): Great option if you are in the region or on a way to Carribbean cost - I would deffinately come back. The room/bungalow was just like on pictures. Good sleep, no mosquitos:)) Salamander itself is a very nicely preserved garden or peice of rainforest with multiple trees and flowers. Among others: avocado, mango, star fruit, cocoa. Incredible experience with humming birds flying around you at breakfast as they stop by to drink nectar from flowers right next to the terrace. All good
- Aurelija (9/5): Cozy place where you are greeted like family! - The garden was amazing, like a jungle with a lot of art and a small river.
- Morrison (10/5): We highly recommend and would strongly suggest staying there - We absolutely enjoyed our stay the owners were so friendly and welcoming. And he’s an amazing chef as well breakfast was delicious. The place is quaint and gorgeous. The wife is an artist and her creativity is everywhere throughout the property. There was nothing we didn’t like.
- Jiri (9/5): Superb - Good breakfast and good stuff, clean room.
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely tucked away haven with genuine local people
- Alexej (10/5): Nice little spot to rest along the way. - A little garden of eden. The hosts are so friendly. The room was very nice. We could only pay in cash which we weren’t prepared for.
- Sönke (9/5): Great for a short stay - Great hosts, Cosy and trustable environment in a unique place built over 16 years
- Rosendo (3/5): Poor -
- Matthew (10/5): Beautiful property, very nice stay - The property is a beautiful oasis in the small town with very attractive decorations throughout! Helpful owner and nice breakfast All was good
- Ashley (8/5): Very good - Beautiful gardens! It’s a new world behind the gates.
Charming and responsive hosts
Lovely breakfast
- Don (10/5): Exceptional - Exceptional art and beautiful gardens. An oasis.
- Gilles (10/5): A treasure of a place hosted by the very best! - I loved Salamandra!. The property/garden is absolutely beautiful and cozy with a huge variety of lush flora. Everything was super clean and all four breakfasts I had were different and delicious. Jose and Silvia are extremely attentive hosts... they're simply the best.
I would return in a heart beat.
- Selva (9/5): Superb - Totally unexpected. A hidden jungle within the walls of the place. Lots of interesting artistic features. Amazing gardens with plenty of interesting wildlife. Jose and Silvia are wonderful people. Food made by Silvia breakfast and evening were delicious. Rooms were clean and well appointed. Highly recommended
- Nele (10/5): Exceptional - Behind the gates of this property awaits a garden paradise, in which the guest rooms/cabins are located - so much to explore.
Our hosts were very accommodating and were awaiting us with a warm welcome and cool drinks.
Dinner is available upon request and freshly prepared. So is the breakfast - both tasted really good.
A parking space is available on the property.
It was perfectly located for us to reach La Pavona the next morning (1h drive).
- Isabelle (10/5): Exceptional place with lovely hosts - Jose and Silvia are one of the friendliest hosts I have ever experienced! The place is awesome and also the food is delicious.
Totally recommended!
- Vitali (9/5): Superb -
- Barbara (8/5): Very good -
- Miriam (10/5): Great hosts and amazing property. - The hosts are amazing and the property is incredible. Only stayed for one night on my way to San José but would definitely come back to explore the area. Nothing
- Paul (10/5): Perfect for me but be prepared for the dounds of nature. - The property is excellent, with its own bit of jungle containing many plants, birds, and even a creek running through it. The owner(?) manager was friendly and helpful, with google acting as translator. Breakfast was a simple home cooked meal on a covered patio (he did ask about dietary restrictions beforehand). It is a bit out of the way hiding in a residential neighbourhood, but gps found it okay. Be sure to arrive in your agreed window since the manager will be waiting to assure you that you found the right place, and accompany you on the drive around the block to the secure parking at the back of the property.
- Maria (9/5): We loved our short stay with José and Silvia. The scenery of the accommodation is simply fantastic with so much greenery - The amazing garden full of animals, the art, the food and our hosts! Only one downside, there is no hot water in the shower
- John (10/5): Don’t Miss This Beautiful Location - Absolutely everything…!!! Nothing…. Everything was exceptional…!!!
- Joao (10/5): Best Surprise of Costa Rica - To be honest, I liked everything! The night at this hotel was basically the epitome of why I love traveling! Discover beautiful places and friendly people. Mr José and his wife Sílvia are lovely. They make wonderful homemade food and we had a really good conversation during dinner and breakfast. The property is incredible, full of details and animals! The best surprise in Costa Rica in terms of accommodation. Nothing!
- Chintan (10/5): Relaxing incredibly beautiful stay - Jose and Silvia are super caring hosts. Their place is like a hidden fairy tale gem behind the door. Surrounded by trees and plants the rooms are very quiet and well maintained. Hosts have decorated the place with very much attention and care. They love to help and share their stories with their guests. Breakfast was prepared fresh and homemade, according to our wishes. They even let our friends sleep in the car for free in their backyard. Internet was fast 100+ mbps. We felt very relaxed at their place. If you want to stay away from the noises and get relaxed, this is the place for you.
- Sven (9/5): Lovely people with a beautiful place on a nice location - We loved to stay at Salamandra Lodge. José and Silvia Made us feel really welcome. They have a lovely garden and the breakfast was delicious. Would highly recommend this place. Only ‘cold’ water shower. Room could have been cleaner.
- Wladimiro (9/5): Very nice surprise in the middle way to Caribe beaches. - Clean. Comfort. Environment. Parking. Breakfast. Host The room didn’t have warm water
- Alanna (10/5): Exceptional - Jose and Silvia were fantastic hosts, very knowledgeable of the area and made great recommendations. The grounds are beyond beautiful. The room was very clean. Decorations, art and hospitality were very enjoyable. Coffee and breakfast were delightful. The experience was a hidden gem.
- Adam (9/5): Unique and interesting room. - Jose was a great host. N/A
- Seppe (10/5): Exceptional - What a lovely place. Perfectly located as a stopover towards Tortoguero (an hour from the boat in Pavona). Super sweet hosts who do everything to make you feel comfortable. Nice comfortable rooms (be sure to ask for the beautiful, new tree house) and already an adventure to walk around in the beautifully landscaped garden. With a bit of luck you will immediately see toucans, hummingbirds, a basilisk or a sloth. All this supplemented with a delicious breakfast and dinner. Recommended.
- Gary (8/5): Slept Well - The owners, Sylvi and Jose were very friendly and inviting. My wife and I enjoyed our stay. Not enough electrical outlets.
- James (10/5): Tranquil - Beautiful garden, the hosts are very friendly and the breakfast is great. Would stay there again.
- Lydia (9/5): Very comfortable night and so kind owners - We spent only one night on our way to Tortuguero but enjoyed a lot our stay. This place is the result of passion and continuous work to make it a beautiful and warm place. Jose and Silvia are the kindest hosts. The art of Silvia is blossoming everywhere in this place: she is so talented
- Hayley (10/5): a really lovely place to stop, recharge & smell the flowers :) - what a unexpected beautiful experience! I needed somewhere to break up my drive & stumbled upon this place.
it’s basically a BnB style. your hosts Jose & Sylvia are so lovely! what a beautiful house! I’m glad that even with my beginners Spanish we could have some conversations together. their garden is just LUSH!!!! and I had even forgotten that it came with breakfast in the morning. I stayed in the 4bed dorm & lhad it all to myself. If you are so lucky to be also greeted with the most delicious brownie I’ve ever had you will give this place a 10/10 also!
they were just the most loveliest of hosts, just down to really little things that made me feel so welcomed as a person travelling by themself.
some points of info
* it is a person’s house in a small town off the beaten track. I had a car so it was easy to get to.
* there is a supermarket & small restaurant (closes at 8pm) literally 5 min walk away & felt more than safe enough
* towels provided
* saw an ant eater in the evening in the garden whilst having my dinner
* I had a beautiful home cooked soufflé & fresh fruits for the morning
* bathroom inside the 4 dorm room
* fridge inside the 4 dorm room cold water only (I think?) but as to be expected in CR
- Arnaldo (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely couple. We are very glad for this one night stop on our way from LA Fortuna to Puerto Viejo with our 1 year old baby. The owners live there and are very kind. Though they speak only Spanish, they were so helpful in everything. The recommended a great restaurant 10 minutes drive away with nice vegan options. We got amazing local vegan breakfast that they made themselves. Their garden is so artistic and pretty. Such a nice visit in authentic Costa Rica place. Not touristic in any way, modest and sweet. Warmly recommended!
- Jaywalker (8/5): Unique place. Very good breakfast. Fair value. - The owners are very friendly, helpful and accommodating. We needed a mid-point stay while driving between the La Fortuna area and the Puerto Viejo de Talamanca area. This location worked well. We arrived early evening and left in the morning. We generally stay in rooms costing 3 or 4 times more, but there is not much available in this area west of Limon. We were in a cabin with a double bed. Nothing luxurious, but still fair enough for the price. Breakfast on the open-air porch was plentiful, homemade and delicious. The husband-wife hosts will do most anything for you. (They speak little English, and we speak little Spanish, but everything worked out well.) The small grounds and décor are special. The wife was formerly an art teacher and her talents are shown and displayed throughout the property. Endless amounts of small and large clever pieces of her work on randomly displayed. It gives you a real sense of being in Costa Rica and the pride the owners have in their property. The neighborhood is rather tightly packed, but this property gives you a sense of seclusion. We were able to park our car is an enclosed covered garage area. If you keep in mind the reasonable price, and the slim choices of places to stay in the area, I think Salamandra was a very good value. There is no hot water in the rooms... so you just make due when washing of bathing. Also, the floor-standing air-conditioner is quite noisy, but it does help cool the room.
- Alaa (10/5): it was an amazing experience. José ans Silvia are great people with great hospitality. the room was very nice and clean. -
- Carolina (10/5): Exceptional - We really liked the decorations and all the beautiful nature in the surroundings.
The bed and living areas were comfortable.
- Amy (9/5): Beautiful home, garden and people - We loved everything about the property. Sylvia and Jose are the loviest people, despite the fact we had very limited ability to communicate because neither spoke the others language, they made us feel very welcome. The house and garden are just incredible. So unique. Jose made us a lovely breakfast and we left wishing we had longer there. nothing
- Rachel (7/5): Good - Jose and Silvia are lovely, so accommodating and helpful! Their house is amazing, full of Silvia’s art creations and it has an amazing garden full of plants and birds. It’s a good place to stay if you have a car to explore the surrounding area. Breakfast is included and is really nice, each day Jose brought a bowl of fresh fruit and gallo pinto, eggs, cheese and toast, and the coffee was delicious! There were a lot of ants and cobwebs in the dorm room so it didn’t feel super clean
I think a dorm room is quite pricey (around $30 per night) for the quality of the room
- Romane (10/5): Excellent experience by all accounts - Silvia and José were so welcoming from the get-go. I spent the most pleasant evening chatting and listening to music with them. The house is a true jewel, full of Silvia's art, and so is the garden, lush and fresh. Together, all these create a little bubble of paradise where I will surely go back! Nothing
