Guest Reviews
- Billy (10/5): Wonderful, soulful, quiet. - The house and the garden is so beautiful. The breakfast room is stunning. It’s all very well kept, and the place has a soul! Maybe just the security gate and street could be better kept.
- Stefania (9/5): - Un luogo davvero speciale, belle camere, cucina ottima, personale eccellente.
- Paul (9/5): -
- Beaujolin (10/5): Protection the heritage by staying on the historical site is a brilliant way of making regenerative tourism. - The rooms, the staff, the visit of the museum Absolutely nothing!
- Wenzhen (9/5): 非常美妙! - 历史遗产,博物馆,建筑设计。 床有点塌,不够硬。
- Fredia (9/5): Charming boutique hotel in a historic property; a lovely oasis away from hectic Johannesburg - Beautiful little oasis in a Johannesburg suburb with great historic interest and aesthetic sensibility. Staff was very friendly and helpful. It was a little quiet, almost like being in a church.
- Robert (10/5): - Historic property. Attentive pleasant staff. Cool aesthetic vibe. Difficult to walk around the surrounding area which is what Joburg is like.
- David (8/5): -
- Noemie (10/5): - Where to begin. A wonderful haven of peace - we were surrounded by calm and beauty from the minute we stepped through the door. The entire property carries and conveys the peacefulness and beauty of Gandhi's work, while still being extremely comfortable. The vegetarian dinner was delicious, as well as the breakfast by the fire. We only wished we had stayed for longer to enjoy it more.
This stay will truly remain in our hearts and memories for a long time. Nothing
- Tanja (8/5): Sehr nettes Personal - Sehr gut

- Hoogewoud (10/5): - Le calme, la sérénité, l’esthétique, le fait que ce soit un lieu chargé d’histoire. Rien
- Alexandra (9/5): -
- Yael (9/5): Lovely - - Absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Everything is decorated with great taste and stylish details. It’s all very unique.
- Very calm!
-Great staff!!!
-Nice breakfast. - Quite upset with the fact that we couldn’t keep our bath towels for a few days. We didn’t need 6-8 new bath towels every day, it’s not eco-friendly nor very Gandhi like…
- Outrageous prices for massage / yoga / wellness etc. (But nice massages).
- Disappointed with the dinner. Nice but nothing extra and didn’t not meet our expectation at all.

- Poornima (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful and memorable stay! Place is peaceful, serene, and a well kept Gandhi museum. The rooms are good size, very neat and has a simple minimalist theme depicting Gandhi’s principles. The staff, Sima and David went above and beyond to make our stay memorable!
- Harris (10/5): The museum is one of Johannesburgs highlights - Inspiring and peaceful within a beautiful garden setting. Unique glimpse into history coupled with a boutique guest house
- Belgianwaffle (8/5): Very good -
- Cynthia (6/5): Enjoyed historic, authenticity of staying in original house once the home of Ghandi. Comfort fair. - Staff friendly and helpful. Authentic and historic. Interesting and well preserved interiors to show the time Ghandi lived in this house. Short stay works best Bathrooms authentic and in keeping with 'original farm' but not comfortable for modern traveller. Need shower screen. Mosquitoes so advice is to close windows- no ventilation at night. No rugs on concrete flooring. Pillows and bed are hard and not comfortable
- Teena (10/5): Unforgettable Stay at Satyagraha House - My stay at Satyagraha House was an extraordinary experience. I never imagined I could reside in the very place where Gandhi once lived and coined the concept of Satyagraha. The serene atmosphere, combined with the historical significance, made it a profoundly reflective journey. Reading Gandhi's letters and exploring his personal space provided deep insight into his life. For anyone interested in history, peace, and Gandhi’s legacy, this is a must-visit destination.
- Georgia (6/5): Pleasant - The hotel is beautiful and peaceful—the rooms are tastefully decorated, the exhibition spaces are well curated, and the toiletries are wonderful. It certainly is an experience to stay at Satyagraha House. We had a couple of issues with transfers throughout our 1 night stay. As this was our first time in Johannesburg, I asked the hotel to book us a transfer from the airport. We waited 40min for the driver to arrive; when he did arrive, he did not come to meet us inside the airport; there was no communication either from the driver or from the hotel. It would have been more convenient and more affordable to call an Uber. At the hotel, reception offered to book us a taxi to drive us to and from a restaurant in Rosebank, which he had asked to be booked in advance; unfortunately, reception forgot to book us the taxi, for which we waited for 30min until we were advised to call an Uber. For travellers staying at Satyagraha House—especially if you're alone or as a couple—I would advise using Uber in the first place. We also had a few issues with the service at lunch. Though we had let them know of our dietary requirements in advance, on both occasions there were mistakes with our orders and service stretched itself for longer than was expected.
- Jean (10/5): Great property with historic charm! - Really cool that it was a place that Ghandi had lived! The owners did an incredible job bringing the property to its current state. It was beautiful! Although the food was great, it did take a long time to get served.
- Lorraine (9/5): Superb -
- Robin (10/5): Exceptional - Very friendly staff, peaceful location
- Antoine (10/5): Fantastic stay! - Wonderful place in Johannesburg! The Gandhi’s house and museum is a must seen.
The atmosphere is fantastic and the food is good and healthy, and is served in the Gandhi’s house
We had a massage for free upon our arrival. The shower needs a door so the water doesn’t spill on the floor and on the toilets
- Jitish (9/5): Superb - It was a beautiful experience, and the spirit of Gandhi is still preserved in the way that the place is run. Apparently the food needed to be preordered, which I was not told. Anyway, that accommodated the request, which I appreciated, but when a so-called '6-course' meal appeared, the food item list contained trivialities like water and chutney listed like a course item. The amount of salad served was literally half a table spoon. The chutney served was a size of a thumbprint. Frankly couldn't even tell if it was a chutney. The serving of this frugal six-course meal took 1 hour and 40 minutes. Tiny portions served after long durations. This was really the only downside of the stay, and the management needs to seriously rethink this aspect... I am stating this only to benefit future travellers. All other aspects of the stay were beautiful.
- Geoffrey (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely wonderful. One of my favourite places and most beautiful accommodation experiences I have ever had in all my years of extensive travel. To be able to stay in the very house where Ghandi lived and designed Satyagraha is extraordinary and deeply moving, an opportunity not to be missed. On top of this , it is beautiful, peaceful, exccedingly comfortable, and the staff are awesome, so kind, and go out of their way to make it a great experience for you. All staff were lovely, but special warm thanks to Kaniswa , and to John the caretaker and gardener, who do a wonderful job and are very kind.
Tip: There are no restaurants particularly close, but Kaniswa very kindly helped me organise uber eats from a recommended restaurant, and it was lovely to eat onsite anyway. A lovely breakfast is provided. There was nothing I didn't like. It was wonderful.
However if I were to make one suggestion it would be about price ... such an experience, of course, is priceless, but the high price for a room makes it a one-night-in-a-lifetime experience for a budget traveller like me, when it would be really lovely to spend more time there. Also people with more money might be more likely to book somewhere more luxurious. So maybe a reconsideration of price might be a good idea ... ?
- Ayse (6/5): We stayed here 2 nights. Liked the museum and the setting. If you like to live like Gandhi without electricity, hot wate - It is in a nice setting and the staff is very helpful and friendly. There was no back up power. We had no electricity for 10 hrs each day. Couldn’t charge our phones and no Wi-Fi during this time. For the amount of money we paid we expected a generator or some kind of backup power. There was also no hot water and heat in the room. At 45 degree weather it was not a comfortable stay.
- Amy (8/5): Very good -
- Sheila (10/5): Just fabulous. - The breakfast was excellent. Satyagraha House is my go to destination for both local and international friends and visitors. It is an exceptional facility.
The staff are committed and utterly charming.
Nothing is too much trouble for them.
