Guest Reviews
- julie (10/5): Private oasis in historic township. - Hosts saved us the walk to and from the station. The cottage was quiet and private in a setting of native flora. Verandah overlooked garden, beautiful birds, saw a hare, very warm and cosy, deep bath, provided with eggs and pears from the
garden. Hosts were attentive but not intrusive. Indian takeaway delivered to the door. Cottage located a short walk to the quaint town. Many beautiful historic buildings. The best bookshop in Australia. Couldn’t resist adding to our library. Botanic gardens are a joy and there were many excellent eating spots with excellent wines. Distance from station to the cottage was underestimated. Didn’t know that taxis were available. Lucky to meet Steve walking his dog who called Lisa to give us a lift to the cottage. The deep bath was beautiful but a little dangerous to exit. Slippery and no hand rail. Exercise caution to avoid catastrophe.
- Katherine (10/5): We'll be back at this accommodation for sure! - The accommodation is so cute, cosy and clean! Location to Castlemaine is ideal and the hosts were friendly. Private and comfy. We loved it!
- Abby (8/5): Lovely stay for young children. They loved the chickens - Great location, neat and tidy cottage. Out kids loved the chickens Water pressure was a bit hit and miss
- Leanne (10/5): Lovely relaxing stay felt very welcomed. - Great location. So much provided. Milk tea coffee sugar and condiments. Fresh eggs from chooks on the property. Very clean and tidy. All you need to bring is yourself and your clothing everything else provided besides food. Host are very welcoming.
- Swue (10/5): Serene escape - Lovely setting. The verandah and living area were delightful. Pool was great bonus.
- Cathy (10/5): Relaxed stay - The cottage was in a lovely location. The swimming pool was divine. The hosts were friendly and went out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay. There was milk in the fridge on arrival, local chocolate gifted and eggs from their own chickens. Lisa even took kids to feed chickens and let them collect freshly laid eggs. Will definitely stay again when in the area.
- Angela (9/5): -
- Gary (9/5): Great cabin well situated very clean and quite in rural setting. More suited to adult couple or family rather than fathe - Great rural setting very quite close to Castlemaine township Bunk beds in second bedroom not really suited for adult more suitable for children.
- Carl (10/5): Me, my wife and Son really enjoyed our short stay at the property, it was modern and clean and fresh eggs in the morning - Modern and Clean
The pool and Chooks Nothing
- Sean (9/5): -
- Jennifer (10/5): Great Cottage - The place was very comfortable and clean. My kids loved the pool and adored to feed and collect eggs from the chickens. It was also very close to the turistic places we wanted to visit.
- Elizabeth (10/5): A perfect little getaway! - We loved that the property came across quite secluded, yet it was only a short drive into town! We loved the surrounding bush - that made it feel very cosy and safe. N/a
- Julie (9/5): Very enjoyable, very helpful and friendly hosts. - Very minor - the path from the car to accommodation was unmade, this meant that wheeled suitcases had to be carried. We are both 'injured' at the moment so this was awkward.
- Renee Kirsten (8/5): Weekend away (Castlemaine) - We absolutely loved our time at Butterworth Cottage. The only thing that it lacked was curtains for privacy, other than that it was a perfect getaway celebrating my partner's birthday.
- Sonja (8/5): it was very peaceful - We had a lovely tranquil time, the hosts were very friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed our stay.
- Elisha (9/5): Thank you for having us, it was the perfect little getaway and space we needed for some time out! Bed was so comfy! - It was very comfortable and warm when we needed it to be and cool on the hot days. Pool was a lovely treat for the kids on the hot days we had. Bed was so comfy! Bath was lovely and my kids liked having the chickens to check each day! Little bit further out of town than we expected but still a nice quiet spot
- wendy (10/5): - It was very clean and quiet.... It is really only accommodation for 2 adults and 2 small children. My 6ft 100kg son just fitted in the second bedroom 😳
- Michele (10/5): Perfect getaway - What did we like? Absolutely everything Absolutely nothing!
- mary rose (10/5): -
- Nick (10/5): - Amazing clean property, very quiet location. Kids loved the chickens!!
- Luca (10/5): -
- Meredith (8/5): Very pleasant and clean. I loved the main bedroom and the fireplace was perfect for a wild and windy weather over the w - My friend unfortunately was not happy with the bunk beds, even though she did see the picture. Maybe it needs to specify they are children’s beds..
- John (10/5): Cute little cottage set in the garden with a very efficient little wood heater -
- Julie (9/5): A lovely relaxing weekend, would love to stay again. - Great setting, very quiet, super clean and comfortable. We liked everything.
- Steve Hardman (9/5): -
- Rowland (8/5): Very enjoyable and quiet.lovely hosts - Very warm & cosy with choice of heater & wood stove. Plenty of firewood Tiny bunk beds
- Marcie (10/5): Perfect weekend stay - Very friendly hosts, which is always lovely. The weekend was very rainy, so we stayed indoor most of the time, enjoying the fireplace and the bathtub. Would love to come back in the summer to use the pool, but this was the perfect rainy winter stay.
- Seth (9/5): Lovely, small cottage in a quiet location - Farm fresh eggs, milk, coffee, tea and condiments were provided. Appliances were all brand new. It was a cold night but wood heater warmed us up nicely. Cottage could benefit from a "smart" tv.
- Vanessa (10/5): A restorative winter stay quiet location and suited us perfectly. - The fire heater and location. The small size of the bunk beds.
- Chris (9/5): Superb -
- Julie-anne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Renae (10/5): Cosy cottage with delightful scenery. - Beautiful cottage with lovely amenities. Really appreciated the milk and fresh eggs, as well as having a kitchen that was well-stocked with tea, coffee, oil, salt and pepper. Made using the kitchen feel like home. The lower single bed is very small which was perfect for me but a taller adult may have been uncomfortable.
- Vivienne (8/5): Very good - Very well appointed. Comfortable bed. Secluded. Very clean. Under cover car parking. Enjoyed the chocolate pretzels and the very fresh eggs. The path from the car to the cottage was fairly uneven with loose gravel in spots. As 75 year olds we had to take it carefully. It probably wouldn’t be an issue for younger people who don’t need to be as cautious.
- Deirdre (9/5): Very relaxing; clean and peaceful - Quiet and cosy; well equipped kitchen. Log fire was great. Close to everything.
- Paige (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hayley (10/5): Lovely little cottage - Such a lovely space tucked away in the bush (but within walking distance to where we wanted to go). Cosy cottage with all the amenities that we needed for our quick get away - including being able to cook our own bbq dinner. We had visits from magpies, possums, frogs, kangaroos and giant moths to keep things interesting! Super friendly and helpful hosts.
- Kulwant (8/5): A very comfortable place… quiet and peaceful setting. close to the train station. Short walk to town - Host was very pleasant and approachable. She had left us some eggs, coffee and fresh milk. Also all the essentials like salt pepper oil etc! Extra towels! Had put the heater on so it was nice and warm. She uncovered the pool as our grandkids wanted to swim. Nice size ! The kids room bunk beds and room was small…just big enough for a 10 and 8 years old kids! More suitable for little kids. Bedding was adequate and comfortable.
- Brenda (10/5): Lovely 2 night day with grandchildren. Would definitely recommend. - Location was great for where we needed to be.
Cleanliness and comfort were spot on.
Everything we needed.
Loved the seclusion and quiet.
- Natasha (9/5): Relaxing stay with friendly serenitive environment and host. - The beautiful surroundings of bush land and the children loved checking for eggs in the chicken coop. Everything was great although one suggestion would be to add laundry facilities for guests 🙂
- David (8/5): Stay was good , we would come back - Supplied our own breakfast Heating in bathroom
- Elizabeth (10/5): Beautiful cottage set amongst the gum trees, lovely family and spectacular swimming pool. Amazing!! - Although breakfast wasn’t supposed to be provided, there were fresh farm eggs, plenty of milk, tea and coffee waiting for us.
There were even instructions on how to get mor eggs from the hen house if we wanted.
Thank you!!!!! There was nothing to not like.
- Lud (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kathryn (10/5): Exceptional - The pool was fabulous
- Sharon (9/5): Superb -
- Ryan (10/5): Exceptional - Great location with comfortable and private space for our small family.
- Josie (9/5): Superb - Bath
Bush setting
Natural light and ventilation
Private
Chickens! Decor could have a bit more style to it
- Peta (1/5): We came, we saw, we left. - We did not stay in the accomodation. The second room was the size of a closet with tiny beds It was completely unsuitable and access to parking and the unit was poor and not sufficient for anyone with mobility issues, not even a rail on the step. The owner declined our request for even a partial refund. Not happy. No wonder they wanted full payment up front. With much more comfortable and cheaper accomodation around Castlemaine, this is a definite no go.
- Marcus (9/5): Superb -
- Justin (9/5): Superb -
- Nicholas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carina (10/5): Our family of four (two adults, two kids) had a lovely stay here. The cottage was private and comfortable, and the owner - Beautifully situated, very peaceful, cozy and comfortable.
- Mariana (10/5): Privacy and comfort. Excellent place to stay - Easy check in. Very comfortable on chilly evenings
- Gillian (8/5): Very good - It was clean and everything fresh and new and worked well. Check in was easy The pipes were frozen or water tanks empty and no water one morning otherwise very comfortable
- Georgina (8/5): Nature - Gorgeous place Advertise as Cottage not 2 bedroom house
- Skinner (9/5): Overall very happy with the cottage - the eggs from the on site chickens and some milk and fresh herbs
the wood heater when it got down to 2 degrees
the location out of town but a walk away
peaceful and everything we needed a dressing gown would have come in handy
the wifi to access internet didn't work
- Klingner (8/5): Very good -
- Mcnamara (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gemma (8/5): Very good -
- Rushden (10/5): loved it! -
- Lesley (9/5): Superb - Lovely cosy cottage that gives the feeling you are in your own little forest. Good heating which is very welcome in the colder months. Easy no-fuss check in. The walk (with luggage) from carport to cottage is gnarly and uphill. Not very far but a bit of a challenge for oldies with bad knees.
- Patrick (9/5): Superb - Great location in the trees and peaceful.
- Keith (9/5): Superb -
- Juanique (8/5): Very good - Very cosy and clean The 2nd bedroom - kids beds - In defence of the owner we only read this after the booking was made.
- Melanie (8/5): Very good -
- Kaylene (8/5): Very good -
- Tyndall (8/5): Excellent facilities. Highly recommended. Thanks for a wonderful stay! - Very easy to find. Really appreciated the sensor and colourful lights!
Really comfortable bed and the ceiling fan plus the air-conditioning was a bonus.
Selection of DVDS were great and kitchen facilities exceptional. Really loved the fresh eggs!
Bonus was the view which looked out to the chooks!
I also really loved the balcony and accompanying mountain view.
The wildlife was amazing there, even got visited regularly by a family of inquisitive and cheeky magpies
Undercover parking was really appreciated too.
Loved this place and would definitely return The shower was a bit temperamental and more hanging space would have appreciated
- Carol (10/5): Fab,quiet cottage in bush setting, relaxint with magpies for comoa - The bush setting with the lap pool was just lovely.Still close to town with all things Castlemaine has to offer.
- Amanda (4/5): Disappointing -
- Amelia (10/5): Beautiful setting with unique facilities - Beautiful setting, feels like you are off the grid but situated close to town Nothing
- Pat (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Angela (9/5): Superb -
- Erin (10/5): Lovely cottage - Beautifully tucked away, didn’t get the opportunity out to use the pool but it looked very inviting. Gorgeous bathroom, perfect for a family. Owners very thoughtfully put up a Christmas tree for the holidays. The short walk to the cottage was a bit of a faff with all of our stuff, but its tucked away setting was part of its charm. Had we not been in Castlemaine as part of a larger contingent, we might have found the lack of oven and washing machine a bit limiting.
- John (9/5): Superb - Serentity Maybe a little far from town. No car
- Karen (8/5): Weekend away - Well appointed private cottage. Chickens and fresh eggs a big highlight for our pre schooler. Bed was very comfortable but a little small for us both. Great to have a splash in the pool to cool down. Technology needs a refresh. Second room was fine for 1 small child as we took our guard rail, not sure about lower bed for practicality.
- Maryann (9/5): This was a lovely mini-escape for us and we would happily recommend it. - The Cottage was tucked away behind the main house and we were greeted by a family of carolling magpies and the clucking of a couple of hens in nearby the chook pen. The Cottage was screened by native bushland which could be viewed from every window. The place was nicely appointed and had everything we required (no dishwasher, but we didn't need that). We did not get to meet our host, Shirley, but we were able to communicate by SMS, if required. Information on the local eateries was listed on an Excel spreadsheet - very handy! Personally, I do like to close blinds in the evening but the main living space windows were uncovered. Including a low viewing window that you could look out of if you used the bath. As mentioned there was sufficient bush around but I admit to being a bit of a prude!
- Andrew (8/5): Very good -
- Sally (9/5): Superb -
- Claire (9/5): Superb -
- Sarah (8/5): Very good -
- Dean (9/5): It was a lovely place to stay for the weekend. thank u. -
- Deanna (9/5): A cosy getaway in a gorgeous part of Victoria. - A gorgeous cosy cabin, perfect for a winter's getaway with a small family. We enjoyed the fire and the kids loved the chickens. Unfortunately our child couldn't sleep in the bunk bed as it didn't have a guard rail, so it was too dangerous.
- Margie (9/5): Superb -
- Julie (8/5): very relaxing & just what we needed - loved the peace & quiet and being among the trees hard to find with no signage
- Tim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Graham (9/5): Superb - Very cosy cottage. Great location to Castlemaine and the railway hotel.
- Nigel (9/5): Relaxing place and good position to visit gold fields. - Good views and closish to centre of Castlemaine.
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carolyn (9/5): Superb -
- John (8/5): Quiet peaceful hideaway. - Clean, comfortable very quiet, natural surroundings. Well provisioned.
Heating aircon good. Wood burning stove would be great in winter.
Kids bunk bedroom small and really cute, primary school kids within have a ball there.
Fresh eggs from the chickens outside the window a nice touch. Wifi super slow, need a repeater from the main access point.
No sunny outdoor area, faced south.
- Tom (8/5): enjoy the stay would love to stay longer and have some time in the lap pool - modern facilities needs handrail installed in the shower and the front steps need replaced/repaired
- Sana (9/5): Superb - Located in bush surroundings and the pool was lovely. A quaint little cottage.
- Daniela (9/5): Superb -
- Patricia (9/5): Superb -
- R8medusa (10/5): Lovely cabin in the country - Lovely, quiet cabin at the back of main residence. This was just the country get away we were looking for. Waking up every morning to fresh air, trees and birds was just beautiful.
The cabin had everything we needed, cooktop (no oven), very decent sized fridge, crockery, cutlery, towels (and pool towels).
We loved the pool and having a chat to the chooks!
Shirley was a great host!
- Amy (9/5): Great stay with everything I needed and a friendly, communicative host. Would happily return. - Eggs were provided by the friendly chickens (which you can see from the kitchen window) and there was milk in the fridge on arrival.
Bathroom was huge with a bath tub and walk-in shower. Good quality toiletries provided. Plenty of hot water and good water pressure in the shower.
Kitchen was well-stocked with everything I needed.
Comfortable bed and a ceiling fan in the bedroom which was essential over a few hot nights. Air conditioning was also very efficient in the kitchen/living room.
Well-lit access path was helpful when coming back late in the evening.
You really feel like you're surrounded by nature with the sounds of crickets, frogs and birds. Windows are all screened, so you can open them up and let the air flow when cool enough. Butterworth Street is unsealed, which means taking it slowly in a rental car, but otherwise not an issue at all.
- Shani (9/5): Superb -
- Traecey (8/5): Beautiful escape - beautiful location, good basic facilities, private and quiet
- Charlotte (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ben (7/5): Good -
