Guest Reviews
- Marilyn (6/5): Not suitable for elderly or young children. Old but quaint and cosy. Love the views out the window. - I liked the wood fire. The view.t. The steep stairs. The drive. The bathroom.
- Kenneth (10/5): - We enjoyed the cozy and warm vibes of Stringer's Cottage. The location is near the train station which is great and we didn't need to look for a parking spot since it's a 5 minutes walk from the accommodation.
- Peter (5/5): Walhalla is a wonderful little town and we enjoyed visiting there. The issues noted above we dealt with promptly by the - We stayed at Stringers Cottage - then were upgraded to the Coach House - for reasons below. Both are nestled in a picturesque spot in the forest above the train station. Stringers Cottage is very small and cramped. Really just room for the bed plus a very small kitchenette and bathroom. Still, we knew that when we booked.
The cottage could have been better prepared. It was clean, but lots of empty jars and containers. We were unable to locate matches to light the stove. After several calls between us, the hosts and the housekeeper, Some were eventually located tucked away in a very non-obvious location.
Then after a day of walking we came back to find the hot water not working. Plenty of water - but no heat. The hosts were very apologetic and helpful and immediately transferred us to the larger Coach House. This is much larger and more comfortable. However, the shower in the Coach House is almost impossible to adjust to the right temp. There are signs asking guests to minimise water use (as it is all tank water) however we wasted a large amount trying to get water that was neither scalding nor freezing. This really needs to be fixed for the safety and comfort of guests and would also result in greatly reduced water consumption. I also noticed the hinge on the upper level front door (leading to the outdoor stairs) was broken. This did not affect us as we used only the lower level entry door but seemed indicative of the need for some maintenance around both properties.
- Floortje (10/5): Beste plek om de sfeer van het oude Wahalla te proeven - De locatie en karakter van het huis
- CHRIS (9/5): Great stay in great place - Location and facilities
- Tracy (8/5): -
- Julie (10/5): Warm and cosy, quiet and peaceful, great for nature lovers - such a unique location perched above the railway tracks - great for train enthusiasts like my son he could watch it pass from the games room window or kitchen!
- steven (8/5): - The woodfire and the TV was great. The availability of dishwasher would be brilliant, since it would help to save water.
- Richard (8/5): Very good -
- Michaela (6/5): Pleasant - Great location, great views and loved being able to see/hear the train taking off each day was a good novelty for the kids. Plenty of room for our group, beds were super comfy. House had a great charm to it. 5 min walk to the train station which was convienient with kids. Also in walking distance to the Pub. About a 25ish min walk into town which is a beautiful walk. Shower upstairs is either cold or scolding hot just means you have to have a very quick shower. A few more general staple items would have been great in the house eg: tomato sauce/Vegemite etc, coffee that wasn’t all stuck together. Driveway is very very steep little intimidating to drive down so just be prepared. Also the house is obviously high up on cliff edge so kids had to watched even more closely when outside as it isn’t safe. None of the above hindered our stay we still enjoyed immensely but good for other families to know and be prepared
- Ian (7/5): An enjoyable stay in a unique house. - Eclectic interior, great location, lots of space, clean, comfortable beds, wood fire, big refrigerator, plenty of towels, good heating. Kitchen is a bit dark, quirky light switches and taps, steep and tight driveway.
- Keith (10/5): One of the best two days of my week long trip, incredible - absolutely everything there was nothing i didnt like
- John (9/5): Walhalla - perfect accommodation for the place - The location, in a bushland setting above the old walhalla railway. The guesthouse was quirky and comfortable. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen well equipped, and the bathrooms effective. Nothing significant. The stairs from the kitchen area up to the living and bedroom area were narrow and steep, but manageable with reasonable care.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional - I had a great stay and it was very peaceful and well kepted.
- Carol (5/5): Passable - The house was clean and the beds were comfortable I didn't like the stairs thay are very
steep and narrow no good for old people and Children the drive way and parking is only good for all wheels drive and 4 wheels drive no good for normal cars the house smell of Dead mouse
- Heather (8/5): We enjoyed our stay. It rained a lot, but we were cosy with the fire. - A good size for our group
- Bill (8/5): An eclectic home that had lots of character & was exceptionally clean - The property was exceptionally clean & had fantastic heating with lots of room. The beds were comfortable. The driveway is very steep & the configuration of the house interesting. The tv had no local channels but had a variety of Netflix Stan etc which meant you could relax with a good movie.we enjoyed our experience in this eclectic home. The driveway being so steep.
- Isabella (8/5): Very good - This was a peaceful stay, you really feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. Gorgeous bush all around and so nice to sit by the fire. Comfy bed and good black out curtains. Loved to have a coffee and look out at the view. It was incredibly dusty, especially under the bed. Missing a few basic supplies such as salt.
- Shane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Janice (8/5): Very good -
- Hoang (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sean (6/5): A charming, small cottage in a wonderful location in a town that's out of history. - The location - being just above the train station where you can watch the engines shunting - was delightful. Not to mention just how close it was to everything in Walhalla. The building itself is charming, and perfect for a quick getaway for two. As long as you don't mind steps, you'll have a good time. The bed was very comfortable and the decorations charming. I loved the wood heater, and it did a good job of warming the place. I've given the owner of the property a list of issues we had on the weekend, and I trust that he will take care of them. Just two things I would advise visitors - bring a good torch, it's quite dark in this town and there's not much external lighting around, and make sure you bring your own food. The only thing that was provided was some milk and tea/coffee (and that was of questionable vintage).
- Nick (10/5): Exceptional -
- Allan (7/5): Good -
- Jordan (9/5): Superb - Lovely stay and amazing view over the creek and valley.
- Ry (9/5): Dream weekend - Was a fantastic setting for a weekend away with friends. Such a comfortable house. We loved our stay.
The peace and quiet at night, the stream outside and the little train going past in the morning were delightful. Shower up the top was impossible to get the temperature right. However, shower in the bottom worked well.
- John (9/5): A great place to stay. - Quite, well located and comfortable. A quaint cabin in the forest It would have been nice to have some soap and shampoo and if firewood was supplied we'd likely have been more cosy.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Celebrated my birthday there and it was perfect for a family weekend away - Loved the location and the style of the property. Plenty of wood for the fire and it was lovely and cosy. Great toys and games perfect for a family The shower, water was either scalding hot or freezing cold. Inconvenient and dangerous for children
- Susan (9/5): Relaxing and special ‘Cottage amongst the trees’ experience. - Gorgeous old-time tiny cottage guest-house nestled in beautiful bush setting with great view over historic railway, and just a short drive into the picture-book township of Walhalla. LOVED every bit! Steep stairs down to cottage were initially bit of a shock, but we really liked the whole experience, including not having some additional ‘loud’ modern appliances (eg. TV, microwave) made it a bit more in keeping with the historic cottage feel.
- Satvir (9/5): Superb -
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Mirjam (8/5): Lovely house to stay in, beautiful location. - Beautiful location ( we love Walhalla). Love the house, wood heater, beautiful views looking out every window. Big kitchen, plenty of space, comfortable beds and bedding. Plenty of things in the house for everyone, books, games, toys. The oven is very dirty, pots and pans need replacing or a good clean.
- Shelby (10/5): perfect country getaway to make great memories and get of the grid! - We could not believe how cosy the house was and huge! The location was like a painting! really loved the mine tours and walks around the town! locals were so lovely and helpful! nothing bad to say!
- Erik (7/5): Beautiful scenery, cosy cottage - The scenery surrounding the cottage was breathtaking. There were hot water bottles provided. The smell coming from the sinks, and there's no heating other than a fireplace which didn't heat up the room. Wasn't able to use our own rice cooker or electric heater. The plug couldn't handle even 400 watts.
- Lynnette (7/5): A unique, off the grid experience - Gorgeous furniture, unique beautiful location, peace & quiet There was a bit of an issue with spiders & inconvenient parking for cars. I was unaware that the property was "off the grid" until after my payment was made
- Marta (9/5): Superb -
- Eldert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- David (8/5): great - The long flight of stairs to get to the cottage were not mentioned in the initial information and they are not especially safe to use when wet.
- Graeme (9/5): We had a very comfortable stay which was perfect for our family - On the edge of town but everything was within walking distance
- Felicity (10/5): Amazing house - AMAZING VIEW!!! The staff are an absolute delight to deal with. Very nice and welcoming.
Was perfect for a family that wants to get off the grid, get away and get closer together. 2 queen beds. 2 bunk sets. A spare mattress and a cot. Beds are very comfy and clean.
2 toilets. 2 showers and a gorgeous big bath.
There are some toys/boardgames and a great book selection for both kids and adults. Was also a pool table and a piano. Top of stairs is gated for safety.
Kitchen had everything we needed. There was no fridge but ice and cooler boxes provided which was perfect for 2 days.
Very good wood heater with preped wood provided, fire lighters and matches.
Awesome bird watching. Very peaceful. It is next to a road but there isn't many passers by.
No internet but good telstra coverage. There is no optus coverage.
It is solar powered with a back up generator
Beautiful view of the train that runs on the weekends. It is a beautiful short train trip.
Local ghost tour is VERY good.
Local pub had very nice food and a warm welcoming atmosphere.
I would highly recommend the walhalla guest house 😁😁😁😁😁
- Anonymous (10/5): amazing cosy getaway ! - loved the location and was super super romantic ! could have provided more firewood
- Baeleigh (9/5): An excellent place! - The location was great and we loved that it is completely off-grid and runs almost entirely off of solar power (with a gas-powered backup generator and HWS). Fire was way too difficult to start; had to go into town to grab more kindling and dry wood but we suspect that the fireplace was damp. The fireplace also hadn’t been cleaned out, meaning a significant amount of ash needed to be removed before we could start the fire.
