Guest Reviews
- Linda (9/5): Beautiful location shared with the local saline - Local penguins and excellent view
- Harradine (10/5): -
Niks
- Philippa (7/5): Location amazing, accommodation just basic - Location is just perfect . Accommodation was basic
- Jörg (8/5): -
- Claire (9/5): A fabulous stay in a brilliant location. - A stunning location over looking beautiful Emu Bay. Very comfortable with lots of lovely places to sit and enjoy the view. Be prepared for a lot of bird noise which makes the house truly unique! There are flocks of very loud corellas in the tres above. There are also some resident little penguins who are noisy at night but very special. There were ear plugs at the property!
- Stacey (10/5): Penguins and Beautiful Beach - View is exactly as good as pictured. Distance to beach is exactly as listed. Emu Bay is stunning. Shallow calm waters. Penguins nest underneath deck. We got lucky as a Koala wandered through and spent a long time drinking from water bowls right near deck. Blue wrens aplenty. There is a food truck style Cafe very close by with amazing cocktails, burgers, breaky items and gelato. Very clean. Very comfortable. Highly recommended. Penguins are very noisy at night but so very worth it. Everything else is perfect!
- Elisa (6/5): - Location, fantastic experience The beds are very old and uncomfortable
- Shaun (8/5): Penguins up close and personal - It's the location that sets this property apart from other accommodation providers. The location is on the beach and you will see the penguins come in at around 9:30 pm and leave at 4:00 am. We were on the beach watching the two parental penguins arrive in the dark on the sand. They did see us and ducked back in the water so we let them be and then they waddled their way to the shack. The shack has all your cooking utensils sorted and the honey and bread that was on the counter when we arrived was nice. We went and bought that honey in a big tub before we left the island. The penguin smell wasn't the greatest but I covered up that smell with tropical strength aeroguard. They did supply odorless in the shack but you need the smell. When I went to bed I put vicks vapour rub on the neck so I couldn't smell the penguin poo. It does come with the territory though as it's on the beach. We stayed 3 nights but I think that's a bit long as the penguins make their noise and smell everyday.
- Keith (8/5): Unforgettable and unique stay - Location, Emu Bay is a wonderful beach. There is a pop up cocktail bar near the car park serving great Margaritas with the friendly locals. Having the penguin’s nesting under the property is unique. It’s an unforgettable experience watching them come up from the beach each evening. Unfortunately if you want to be close to the penguins you must be prepared to be woken up in the early hours and have a fishy aroma around.
- Jodie (10/5): A dream getaway for my 52nd birthday everything I wanted and more, tfe penguins were a beautiful unique experience absol - An absolute dream getaway location, shack on the beach with penguins what a unique experience!! Nothing … absolutely loved it !!
- Maree (8/5): Perfect place to relax & enjoy nature & the Island. Communication with owner was spot on. - Love the location, outlook, wildlife, facilities, EVERYTHING! A very peaceful setting in the perfect beach location. Everything about the house was as described. Well equipped kitchen & bathroom facilities. Bed was very comfy. Aircon & extra blankets to take the chill off the unusual cold weather for November. Grocery supplies only 15 minute drive, but worth it for the tranquility. Be sure to check out the Beach Cafe at the end of the road, serving burgers & cocktails, very handy! A very special location, with simple, non pretentious accommodation. I would recommend to anyone wanting to use as a base for seeing Kangaroo Island. Nothing to dislike.
- Meredith (7/5): Beach front stay - Location on beach was outstanding
Bed was comfortable Noise and smell of penguins
Lack of fitting lid for bbq so collected water
Only one stemmed wine glass
Recycling bin in kitchen broken making it hard to take out
Toilet roll holder fell off wall, needed to be fired
- Catherine (7/5): - The view and the penguins The penguin smell was not nice, but we felt it was worth it for the chance to see the penguins each night.
- Karen (9/5): Brilliant stay. Enjoyed the location & privacy. - I thought the location was perfect. The views were amazing, & the property had a secluded feel to it. Loved the addition of the penguins, which really made the stay special. Would definately stay again.
- Deb (4/5): Host needs to think about it ASAP. - Location Room was strongly smelly, difficult to stay and sleep. Even difficult to breath with the door closed. My wife got sick, we could not sleep because of the smell.
- Colleen (10/5): Rumah Pantai the secret getaway that shines. - Rumah Pantai was amazing to stay at. Loved every minute there. Going to sleep looking at the stars and waking up to an amazing sun rise. The penguins where a joy to watch. Nothing.
- Adrian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bershadskiy (10/5): Great place to connect with nature - Excellent location to relax and enjoy the nature. The house had everything we needed for a 3 day vacation. We emmensly enjoyed the penguins roaming around the house. Definitely recommend this property.
- Annette (9/5): Superb -
- Sylvia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Timothy (9/5): Superb - Fantastic views - absolute abundance of wildlife - especially penguins. Steve next door showed us around, gave a few island tips and even offered up some squid and whiting - if you're staying, have a chat with him, good local guy!
- Deborah (10/5): Want to live here forever - Was so excited to stay here from the start of my holiday preparation. It was perfect to experience nature in its raw elements. We hope to make this stay an annual trip. Just love, love love. Nothing
- Trevor (9/5): Superb - Close proximity to the beach, relaxing atmosphere, the views, local wildlife.
- Fred (9/5): Superb -
- Julie (10/5): Breathtaking - The view , location just amazing Nothing
- Jayne (10/5): A lovely suprise to find this gem! - The location was magical! Perched atop a sand dune overlooking the beautiful Emu Bay, there is an abundance of wildlife and birdlife to enjoy with superb views. We saw little penguins (nesting under the deck!), wallabies, echidna (taking a bath in the water bowls!), blue wrens, pelicans and more.
- Craig (10/5): Excellent stay, highly recommended. - Everything. Well appointed with everything we needed. Perfect location with beach views. quiet. Saw the penguins at night. Nothing.
- John (7/5): Good -
- Ramsey (10/5): Penguins! - The location was amazing. It is located on the beachside, with a short path through the vegetation to get to the sand. And we had penguins come right near the back door at night time. Incredible! Pack mosquito repellant because it’s a lovely spot to sit outside in the evening but the bugs eat you alive
- Nick (4/5): Disappointing - The view , being able to walk down to the beach The smell in the house was putrid. We had to go and get a smelling candle Saturday morning, no coffee table and uncomfortable lounge. The penguins were ridiculous and kept us up both nights. In the mornings, we used the BBQ for breakfast to take in the view, but there was penguin shit everywhere, and it stank. Sorry not being able to sleep isn't our idea of a holiday. If we could have layed in bed and listened to the crashing waves at night, it would have been perfect.
- Angela (10/5): Exceptional - The most amazing place on KI in our opinion. Perfect little place for a romantic getaway. Best views. We had a fantastic time and will definitely be back thank you
- Andrew (8/5): Very good -
- Per (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful location
- Jemellia (10/5): Exceptional - So nice and relaxing by the beach with amazing views. Very peaceful with all the wildlife and cute penguins nesting under the deck. There a cool little path down to the beach which is lovely and great to swim in . Shower pressure was a little weak but is barely an issue.
- Janice (8/5): Beautiful View - Although we didn't meet the host she sent lots of useful information. The property is in a beautiful stop of Emu Bay overlooking the beach, we were lucky to see Dolphins whilst eating breakfast outside, also a Possum came to visit one night & massive Lizard. There are resident penguins & although they were lovely to see we did not sleep the first night as they were so noisy. The bed was clean & comfortable. Self catering is the best option here, Kingscote is a 15 minute drive away with some restaurants but they all close very early. We managed to get the last takeaway Pizza at 8.30pm. This property needs a little TLC, the salt shaker was in the cupboard but empty. There was a torch which was needed but had an extremely old battery & didn't work. The TV had no reception when we arrived as the ariel was not connected. My Husband manage to get the TV on but also the TV remote batteries did not work, we had to swap them from another remote.... Emu Bay is lovely but I would not feel safe taking Children to this beach as Vehicles were allowed to drive on it, we laid on the beach for a short while but didn't feel safe as big trucks & cars were driving on the beach.
- Ryan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matt (8/5): Very good -
- Carolyn (9/5): Comfortable accommodation in a beautiful location - The location was great with our own access to beautiful Emu Bay. The accommodation was comfortable and had plenty of room. The little penguins on the deck in the evenings made our stay extra special. No complaints at all. There could maybe be a few more utensils, plates etc but everything we needed was there.
- Tanya (10/5): What wasn’t to love about our little house for a quiet break away. - Loved our stay. Location was amazing - the beach the ease to get out and see K.I. and the cute little penguins that chatted away while I had my coffee on the deck watching the sun rise. Could have stayed longer. Could have used a couple of kitchen items but we got by.
- Peter (9/5): A great getaway for a couple - Beautiful location- great view from deck Very basic supplies provided such as coffee machine but no coffee to use in it - no milk etc.
- Margot (10/5): Exceptional - Secluded tranquil paradise with views through trees to white sand & blue water.
Relaxing comfortable accommodation.
- Geoff (9/5): A wonderful return to an old favourite - My family built ‘the shack’ about 60 years ago and this was my first stay there in about 40 years. The improvements, both inside and out are terrific. Rumah Pantai’s Asian decor theme is very well done, but it will always be ‘the shack’ to me. Nothing
- Philip (8/5): KI is such a beautiful place. We loved being in Emu Bay. - Location. Beach. Views. Loved having the little penguins running around the deck. Very unique experience. But … noisy. !! We loved the little penguins wandering around the deck. ..but they were SO noisy all night. My husband had to go buy some earplugs. I already sleep with ear plugs so it didn’t bother me!! Is this seasonal or all year.
- Susan (10/5): Amazing wilderness retreat with meeting penguins as an added bonus. My bucket list ticked - Quiet and beautiful outlook walk straight down to the beach.
Outdoor verandah overlooking beautiful bay
Penguins at the door
Wonderful communication with manager who was also very helpful and accomodating Penguins were noisy but the encounter was once in a lifetime
Recommend taking earplugs though for sleep
Not staying longer
- Rachel (8/5): Quick weekend getaway - The location was fantastic & the view beautiful. The facilities were great, the bed nice & comfortable. The place was easy to find and the access to the beach was fantastic so that we could go for a leisurely walk along it. The only negative about this place was the little penguins that came to visit us at night, they made lots of noise & we could still hear them through our earplugs when we went to bed! I don't think I could put up with that for too many nights!
- Roger (9/5): Superb - Unique location, literally a stone's throw from a pristine beach on the sheltered side of the island. Fairy penguins nest in the garden around the unit, including under the deck beside the door. Close enough to town to get supplies when needed (20 minutes drive) but far enough away to feel you have really gotten away. Be aware that the penguins nest very close and are very, very noisy at night. Bring ear plugs.
- Fern (10/5): An oasis, views and relaxation! - The property was set in the most amazing location. The views of the beach were remarkable. The property was clean and provided everything you need for a comfortable stay. We sat and watched dolphins on the deck as well as shared the space with penguins. We are two friends who shared the space and couldn’t have asked for more! We were lucky enough to meet the owner who showed us the property grounds, we were very thankful and felt even more connected to this beautiful place We have nothing to complain about! Our stay was amazing, don’t listen to the poor reviews. Read the property description and arrive prepared you will have an amazing time.
- Amanda (6/5): Excellent location but penguin serenade becomes tiresome quickly. - Excellent location raised above the beach which is accessed via some large stepping stones down the dune. Small 1 bedroom 'shack' but has all amenities including a large fridge, oven and air con. The mattress needs replacing unless you like rolling into the middle. At the time we stayed we were serenaded nightly by the penguins - unique and cute at first but not when you end up averaging 5 - 6 hours sleep a night. This became worse on the night the poor penguins were terrorised by vehicles racing up and down the beach whilst they were trying to get to their burrows and they then 'squawked' all night. Unfortunately and illogically driving on the beach is permitted.
- Adam (7/5): All round good trip - Great location and views Poor water pressure, and bed comfort
- Daniel (10/5): Fantastic, relaxing time! And stunning view. Thanks! - Stunning view! Nothing
- Nicola (9/5): great view, rustic and fab access to the beach - access to the beach and the view older but that’s ok
- Petewong (9/5): Superb - The location and the view The bedroom was very small and the water pressure of the shower was too weak.
- King (7/5): Great location but a bit lacking in other areas - Location, location, location - brilliant! Insufficient hot water for 10 second showers (and we get the limitations of tank water). Bringing this to the attention of the agent seemed pointless.
Uncomfortable mattress on a bed that took up most of the room - nowhere to put a book, glass of water, specs, etc.
No milk. Could also consider providing a bit of ground coffee for the machine - but this is a minor consideration.
We get that this is essentially a beach shack but some minor improvements are necessary for paying guests. A few improvements would really elevate the experience.
Hope this is taken in the constructive spirit in which it is intended.
- Shayne (10/5): Fantastic location with a path leading down to the beach. Amazing views from the deck. - The location was perfect, a path lead straight from the accommodation down to the beach. The views from the deck were amazing.
The accommodation was clean & comfortable, the photos provided did not do it justice, it was much nicer in person.
- Del (6/5): Pleasant - The back deck has fantastic views to the Bay and easy access to the beach was fantastic. Early morning walks on the beach watching the dolphins The interior of this accomodation is in serious need of some updating and TLC. Though functional it needs painting and a proper clean and repairs. It was very disappointing to see the level of repairs/maintenance needed given the $255 pn we paid for 3 nights. As a comparison, a last minute booking at a 4 star central Sydney hotel with breakfast and city views in a immaculate setting was cheaper. I know it costs a lot to do the repairs but customers expect better I think. There were squished mosquitos, dirty floors, dusty headboards, chipped paint. I appreciate this is a island setting and I really didnt expect perfection BUT I did expect something in a better condition at this price. I also noted in the visitors book the accomodation has had a constant flow of customers which is great and would also suggest it has been receiving reasonable income to cover some of the cost of the repairs that need to be done
- Charlie (9/5): Superb -
- Kara (9/5): Superb -
- Harry (9/5): Superb -
- Phupinder (3/5): We had booked for 3 nights. We left after 1 night. - The location on Emu Beach and the outdoor deck 1. The Bed was small (for 2 people) and very very Uncomfortable (sunken and soft).
2. The sofa was practically unuseable.
3. The shower was small and dated.
4. There was no cupboard space to put our luggage. It had to be in the living room
5. The wifi did not work. We needed that as there was limited coverage on Optus or Telstra. I was told that there was a DoDo outage. Yet I could see DoDo connections - from the Neighbour wifi presumably
- Geraldine (8/5): Very good - Location was beautiful. Cooking facilities were good. The bedroom was very cramped with no room to put even a glass of water beside your bed at night. Some shampoo conditioner and more soap would have been good.
- Kelly (10/5): Amazing location. - A stunning view of the most beautiful beach. You simply can’t beat this location. The penguins that nest on the property are just adorable and it was an absolute highlight of my trip watching them waddle around each evening. Absolutely loved sitting on the deck. My partner was delighted by the coffee machine. The bed sunk in the middle so it wasn’t very comfy.
