Guest Reviews
- Vinaayak (8/5): Heritage Haven with Old world charm! - The property has an european old world charm and transports you back to a different era. The decor the rich wooden interiors create a warm atmosphere invoking old world elegance that feels both sophisticated and homely.
The intricate woodwork and the vintage finishes spesk of heritage and craftsmanship making this place a blend of history and character!!. A pretty hefty walk using the stepped path up to the property,as the driveway is very steep to walk up and down and not allowed to be used (for good measure!) as described by the host .
If you have knee or leg issues or difficulty walking ,this may not be an ideal location for you.Additionally if you have lot of luggage to carry may end up being a solid workout going up and down to the property :).
The availabiltiy of hot water is limited as the property is not connected to the Yarra water supply so need to be judicious about how much water you are using for washing etc.

- Jacquelynn (5/5): Short stay in the forest - Fairytale position, building and gardens No access to the log fire during our stay, small electric heaters only. We were cold. No internet, no television, Limited tank water. Advised to take short showers. No fixed doors on upstairs rooms. Large plywood panels were under one of the beds and had to be placed over doors for privacy. All of this information was only supplied on the day of our booking.
We also found there was no Optus coverage at the property.
Had we had this information beforehand we would not have booked.
- Alexzandra (9/5): Beautiful - Lovely area and the property was immaculate. The house had a lot of character. Appteciate the firewood that was left for us and the nice bottle of wine. I recommend staying at this property. There were lots of stairs which is noted in the bookings description. Take heed! We accepted this. As per the information this is not disabled access. Good for fitness!
The host was also unwilling to have others guests on the property (understandable for no parties or having more people stay than the property can actually facilitate). I did find it a little odd as I have travelled before for events and it wasn't uncommon to have other people you are travelling with get ready together at someones accomodation or visit as they are staying nearby.
This wasn't a problem for us. If we were travelling as a larger group with others who had booked separate accommodation elsewhere this would have been an issue. This is more a note for travel plans.
- Kathleen (7/5): A beautiful and interesting place that does need a thorough clean. It is quite expensive for a place where the hospitali - It’s very pretty & well decorated. The place needed a good clean and the showers had some mould. It is very expensive for a place that needs some tlc.

- Natalie (8/5): Very good -
- Alexey (10/5): Hidden gem in Kallista - Amazing house for a getaway. All rooms have unique design and are very comfortable. There are no neighbors close by, which is a great bonus. Will come back again.
- Carter (9/5): Superb - The place is an experience. Simply stunning. Like a fairy tale. The hosts were lovely and receptive, and I will definitely rebook. The small details, such as having boutique shampoo and conditioner, body wash, and quality toilet paper, would have been nice. For the money you pay, these things definitely matter. The home itself was amazing, but the experience was cheapened by the lack of these things. Get some ASOP asap, guys, and it will be flawless ✨️
- Alexey (10/5): A magical and relaxing getaway in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges. - I had a wonderful stay at Fernhill Estate “Gingerbread House”. The house is spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped with everything you need for a relaxing getaway. The location is perfect, surrounded by the rainforest and close to the charming Olinda village. This is a place where you can feel the magic and history of the Dandenong Ranges. I will definitely come back again. Nothing
- Brian (10/5): Absolutely wonderful -
- Madeleine (10/5): Incredible and unique property - Unique Very steep hill into driveway and lots of stairs up to the property
- Hafez (9/5): Superb - We loved the location and the calm and quiet. The house itself offered ample space and room (the main bedroom and the dining room are superb), and all the amenities required for a comfortable stay. The owners were really communicative and responsive. The place is also close to many great attractions in the Dandenongs. I state these for the purpose of openness and accuracy (what i expect from fellow Booking.com guests). Please remember that I intend to visit this place again and overall, it is an exceptional place with very responsive owners. So read these as room for improvement (or just things to remember when booking the place):
One of the bedrooms wasn't as equipped and comfortable as the others. Two bedrooms didn't have installed doors, but temporary wooden doors. The car park was a bit away from the house and we had to climb a few flight of steps to reach the house, which was difficult for carrying our luggage.
- Michelle (2/5): Not what was expected - did not like it will never stay again and would not recommend. - The house appearance was good. When I first booked I read the add and reviews and it said nothing about all the steps to the premises. The photo showed that you drove to the driveway and then entered the house (thats what it looked like). There were so many unsafe steps to the actual house. Once we were there I read the add again and it looked as if it had been changed to mention the steps and disability access. I had my 82 year old sister with us and I had to end up booking somewhere else for her to stay as access was terrible. It states no age limit for booking which in my opinion is not correct as an older person could not handle that. The add said you could walk around the gardens but they were all blocked off - with a sign no entry. Paddlocks on some of the cupboards made you feel uncomfortable - worried about using the log fire as it said only people who have experience should use it - airconditioning was not working very well. We did not use many of the rooms and stayed out all day as it was such an effort to get back to the property. Very dark, steep and dangerous drive to the premises. We had intended to stay here as a treat and to have something to remember our trip - but we should have stayed in a hotel as it would have been much more comfortable. Will not recommend this to our friends and would not stay here ever again. Very disappointed.
- Natalia (10/5): Exceptional - No code machine
- Victor (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gail (10/5): Exceptional - The great communication from Effie, the amazing property and the surrounding gardens. We will be back with family to this magical place. Nothing
