Guest Reviews
- Bernie (9/5): Had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay at gone surfin. - Very peaceful and drained for comfort and relaxing. Gorgeous view
- Simon (10/5): - Everything, loved it No instant coffee!
- Bianca (10/5): Wonderful and peaceful! Perfect for a calm weekend away - Beautiful and serene! Clean and styled well. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay
- Elna (10/5): The best place. - Perfect location to explore The Otway Ranges amazing beauty.
- Paul (10/5): - Spacious living área, we'll stocked kitchen, fire prepped and ready to go when we arrived on a cold day, beautiful setting in lovely gardens surrounded by birds, great communication with the owner. All in all, a terrific stay. Nothing
- Tyson (2/5): Advertised as pet friendly, but our experience did not reflect that at all. - The location itself is absolutely beautiful. The wildlife, especially the birds, was a highlight — we loved watching them in the mornings and evenings. The atmosphere of the town was lovely too, though it would have been helpful to know in advance that the local shop and fuel station close around 4:30pm.
The veranda would have been fantastic for relaxing, and the views from it were stunning. We also really liked the plates, cutlery and kitchenware — a small detail, but thoughtfully chosen. The indoor fire was wonderful as well; it created a warm and cosy atmosphere, and we enjoyed it very much. It would have been even better if more pre-split wood had been available so that my 82-year-old father didn’t feel he had to go outside and split firewood himself (something unsafe for him given his spinal fractures).
In general, the property has a beautiful feel and could be an excellent stay under different circumstances. Like we hadn't taken the dog or my parents. We booked Gone Surfing because it was advertised as pet friendly, but our experience did not reflect that at all.
As soon as we arrived, we were met with multiple large signs outlining strict rules that had never been disclosed before booking. These included “no pets on beds or couches,” “no pets to be left inside unattended,” and a requirement that “there should be no trace of your pet after you leave the property.” None of this was communicated in advance, and these expectations are simply not compatible with any genuine pet-friendly accommodation.
Our elderly dog has arthritis and normally needs soft surfaces to lie on during flare-ups. Because of the undisclosed rules, she was forced to lie on hard floors for the entire stay, which was distressing for her and upsetting for us.
The tone of the rules created an atmosphere of stress rather than welcome. My partner spent the entire morning before checkout cleaning because she felt the signage implied consequences if the house wasn’t left in a near-clinical state. She worried about this for two days leading up to our departure. My 82-year-old father also felt pressured to help clean, and even began splitting wood because the firewood supplied wasn’t usable — something completely unsafe and unreasonable for any guest, especially elderly ones.
There were also several maintenance and usability issues:
A side door blew open during a storm — it was only luck the glass didn’t break
French door locks were stiff and difficult to use, especially for someone with arthritis
Roman blinds were dusty and hard to operate
The air-conditioning unit also had visible dust buildup
The bathroom heater appeared not to work
The advertised gym could not be found
Use of the washing machine was discouraged despite being listed as available
The advertised fire pit was not present
What really spoiled the stay, however, was the communication style — especially the tone and wording used in the instruction book. The messaging felt mor
- Pam (8/5): A welcome place to call home for a few nights. We stayed for 4 nights - Views are amazing and home was very clean. We were very comfortable. Photos of this property seem to be from quite sometime ago. Garden not as tidy as photos.
- Ehsan (10/5): - Great view of the bay with a lovely garden. Well appointed and spacious home. Has everything that you need for a cosy and comfy stay.
- Antje K. G. (10/5): - This ist a little paradise. Situated up in the hills we were surrounded by nature and wildlife, plus a beautiful garden with lots of seating arrangements outside with a stunning view of the ocean. As we had a bit of cold and rainy weather we enjoined sitting by the fire.
Thank you for letting us stay in your home.
- Andre (9/5): Great rural stay with a lovely view - Nice setup with the central fire

- Kathy (10/5): Perfect four days of peace and quiet - This is a fantastic property to stay at if you have dogs. Fully fenced and lots of grassed area and paddocks for the dogs to frolick in. Our girls really loved their stay here and it was great to see them so happy. We had quite a bit of rain one day (torrential) but when we went outside an hour or so after it stopped, the property hadn't really been impacted and was still good for walking on the grass etc. The fireplace in the middle of the lounge is divine and there's nothing better on a cold night. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking our meals (almost a necessity as other than The Perch restaurant up the road, the next closest shops, cafes, restaurants are either Apollo Bay 40 mins away, Port Campbell 30 mins away). Loved our 4 day peaceful retreat and the view is to die for! We've stayed here twice now and will return again. Maybe a few less things (ornamental) would be good so there is more room for guests to put their own things (like on the little tv table in the bedroom, on the side table when you first enter the lounge etc) but that's just being really picky.
- Jack (10/5): Highly recommended to anyone heading down the coast, great value for money. Amazing! - Everything!
Beautiful little place in a gorgeous area. Very clean, quiet, warm and close to so many epic spots.
Margaret was an amazing host, even put out some birthday surprises for my partner as it was a birthday weekend away.
Value for money was on point, dog friendly which was the main attraction and firewood provider for the fire. N/A
- Miranda (10/5): Cosy and stunning views - This property has absolutely everything you could ever need for a relaxing break! The views and surrounds are stunning and the place is so cosy! The only thing we didn’t like were the pillows and the bed we slept on but they were minimal and didn’t detract from our overall amazing experience!
- Robyn (8/5): Very good - We really loved the fireplace inside, especially as it is winter and was really cold. Also enjoyed the heater in the bathroom to warm the room up.
The beds were really comfortable and the rooms were spacious. The view from the back yard was really stunning too. It was a bit hard to find as google maps directed us past the entrance to the property which was confusing and there was no clear signage especially in the night and dark to know where you were.
The kitchen bin was also filled with leftover rubbish and food when we arrived.
- Gerri (8/5): Awesome spot to enjoy the serenity and views of the Otways - What a beautiful view to wake up too
The comfort of the house was great
Aircon and heater plus the canara made it very comfortable
Being able to bring our little frenchie made it a great stay 2 beds and pillows could of been better
1 bed too hard and 1 bed too soft
- Roz (10/5): Absolute gem! - Awesome location, the views are stunning!
This is an absolute gem of a place, plenty of space but so cosy too. Loved the fire in the lounge, such a great feature at night. The kitchen bar was fantastic...no-one standing alone in the kitchen cooking, we're all there for moral support!
Everything we needed, and so much more, was provided.
The beds are super comfy, the rooms are huge!
Absolutely loved it all. The sign by the gate needs to be bigger...we missed it twice!!
There is nothing to dislike!
- Terry (9/5): We really enjoyed our stay well worth a look. - Very clean with everything we needed.
Fantastic views & central location for exploring the Great Ocean Road. Unfortunately the gardens are lacking some maintenance compared to what it has been previously.
- Jared (10/5): Beautiful secluded location with a cozy house - Great location. Good communication with host. House had everything you need.
- Carolyn (9/5): Superb -
- Donna (10/5): Relaxing and comfortable. - It was my husband's birthday, and we stayed in the house with our adult children and grandchild, it was so cosy with great views and the fire not only warms the place beautifully but was also a great ambience. The kitchen had everything you needed, large tv, kids toys for indoors and out. The ideal home to chill and enjoy the company of others. Quick response from hosts with any questions. Beautiful trees around the property and ocean views. That we couldn't live there forever.
- Andrea (10/5): Perfect weekend getaway - We loved our stay at this house! It was incredibly spacious, making it perfect for a weekend with friends. The place had everything we needed to cook and enjoy our time together. The kitchen was well-equipped, and the entire house was clean and comfortable. We truly had a great experience.
- Chow (9/5): We have a wonderful stay at Gone Surfin the environment is great and we love most is the fire place. - we arrive at night, recommend to place a sign board at the entrance . we need to share bathroom.
- Hadi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julia (10/5): Stunning views and cosy home with all the amenities you'll need. Gateway to the Otways! - We were thrilled that the host allowed us early entrance to the property as the weather had effected our plans for the day. The house was warm and welcoming, the beds were comfy and everything was clean. The fire was a really cosy treat and the cupboard of toys was a bonus for our 4 year old. The view and surrounds were beautiful and impressed our exchange student! We picked this location for its proximity to the Glow Worms and that didn't disappoint. Not at all a criticism of the host or property but just a warning to prospective holiday makers - bring your own food supplies! The nearby pub has closed permanently and we could only find a fancy winery restaurant or a cafe that closed in the afternoon - neither were suitable for dinner for us. There is beauty in isolation but difficulty when you have hungry kids! I should have done more research on that aspect :)
- Heather (10/5): Enjoyed a wonderful two night stay. This property is very welcoming and homely. Loved the fire, - Well located for our group during our visit to area to undertake Great Ocean Walk. Margaret was very responsive and relaxed, felt assured that the booking was confirmed and property easily accessed on late arrival. Loved it all. Some improvements could be kindling for fire and perhaps internal bins within house for recyling purposes. We found some bins in the woodshed but I don't think these were the right ones. Later discovered wheelie bins externally at property entrance and rectified.
- Aleksander (10/5): Exceptional - fantastic location, just in the middle of the otways. Views amazing, perfect location to get to the attractions around. Also if you want to hide away from the World, it is the place to be. Thank you.
- Denysschen (8/5): Very good - We wanted to have a place out of town with a view. Loved the fireplace as we had summer and winter within 3 days :) Loved the surroundings and will be back. Garden need some TLC
- Ross (7/5): A comfortable well provisioned house in great setting. - Comfortable house in a good location. The house was very well provisioned and nicely decorated. External areas could do with some maintenance as getting a bit tired.
- Sheree (10/5): Exceptional -
- Leah (5/5): Passable -
- Shashank (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jarrett (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (8/5): Very good - Great view down to the sea
- Jessamine (9/5): Good time with the family - Everything just wish it was a little less rain but we made the most of it. They need a bigger sign out the front but everything else was perfect.
- Hiruni (9/5): Superb -
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional - It is a lovely, comfy home with beautiful views. Loved the fireplace. Felt extremely relaxed . Would definitely recommend it.
- Sally (8/5): Very good -
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional -
