Guest Reviews
- Janice (10/5): Very relaxing, cosy stay in a beautiful property. - Property was very well equiped, warm and relaxing in a wonderful location. Easy walk to beach and cafes. Lovely garden and beautiful historic home. Nothing we didn’t like about the property.
- Stephen (9/5): Wonderful historic cottage. Read up before you go! - Wonderful historic cottage. Read up before you go! Nothing.
- MAHONEY (10/5): - A charming character cottage full of antique furniture and a feel of nostalgia. We absolutely loved it.
Good beds, nice showers, lovely garden.
My 2 daughters and I had a wonderful stay while we explored the island. Most enjoyable.
Thankyou for the opportunity to stay at this special place.
- Paul (10/5): Perfect - Beautiful. Clean. Excellent Location. N/A
- Linda (8/5): Quiet, peaceful with views across the water that make for a calm relaxing stay. - Great location and history of the house. There was nothing it to like.
- Lori (10/5): Gorgeous historic cottage full of light and comfort, and superb views. - Gorgeous historic cottage full of peaceful and holiday vibes, with beautiful views all around, full of light. Very comfortable, and lots of lovely touches and interesting household items. Spent lots of time contemplating the history of the cottage and the area, with books full of info. Super comfy bed, quirky but well equipped kitchen that reminded me of holidays past. Everything worked. Could have spent weeks more, sitting on the deck contemplating that ever changing superb view of the inlet. And the lovely garden. Can't think of anything! Maybe a drying rack for dishes as I don't use dishwasher machine?

- Ken (10/5): Fantastic historic property in quiet Rhyll with beautiful views across the bay. Beautifully presente -
- laurie (10/5): - so lovely and peaceful, serene, better than the photos!
- PAMALEE (8/5): Very relaxing, comfortable & well located getaway - This historic cottage has a lovely atmosphere and it’s very spacious. The charm and character reflected in the furniture and decor.
The beds were very comfortable and views to the garden area and glimpses of the bay made it very easy to just relax. The age of the building probably makes maintenance and cleaning difficult but for the additional cost of $170 for cleaning we were disappointed that around door handles/ doors and light switches it looked grubby, likewise skirting boards and window sills.
When making the booking on book.com full payment was required and it was only after this payment was made we then got informed of the $170 cleaning, an additional cost per person for linen as well as a $100 bond which as yet has not been transferred into our account. We have not experienced these add ons using booking.com for years world wide.
We know we left the premises clean and followed instructions re the bedding/towels. We put the rubbish outside in the bin ready for collection. It’s a lovely cottage and we liked the location but it just needs a bit of an extra clean.
- Louise (10/5): A very special place - The serenity and peacefulness of Captain Locks Cottage, will stay with me forever. The gardens, the view from the sitting room and balcony, stunning. The ambiance at the cottage is heart warming.
Our beds were all super comfortable. We all enjoyed our stay so much, the family wish to return next year to make it an annual trip.
Anyone who stays at Captain Locks Cottage is in for a treat. Simply superb 🥰 Nothing to fault!

- Naomi (10/5): Beautiful home, heavenly setting. - A privilege to stay in such an historic home. The piano was a really pleasant surprise. Evenings were spent happily tinkling away :) The towels were a bit crunchy on arrival but nothing that the dryer couldn’t fix.
- Sally (8/5): -
- Bec (9/5): A gorgeous comfortable home with beautiful views, well equipped to cater for friends or families. - Great private location, comfortable and warm. The cottage catered well for 9 adults.
- shaun (7/5): A bit of - Nice spot, great location, close to the water, dog friendly Even tho we paid for a certain amount of people coming which was the maximum for the residence allowed which is more money to pay we got asked how many beds we would need 😂 pretty obvious. Owner is very attentive and was in touch for anything we needed during the stay, but Please be careful of the deposit after you book with booking.com, you will be asked to pay a fee ( which is fine) but after we left the residence in clean order for what was available to clean with, ( dishes cleaned and put away, vaccumed and made sure everything was tidy) we did not receive our fee back which it states we are supposed to recieve. So please note that the price given is plus $190.00 I have tried to get in touch with them about it but no response. I hope this helps people coming to stay at this beautiful place in the future 👍
- morgan (9/5): Devine! - Great location, charming cottage, the most comfortable bed we’ve slept in!
- Matt (10/5): Embrace relaxing in history - Genuine character and charm in this historical cottage

- Sheri (10/5): Would highly recommend this beautiful accommodation. - Location, historic cottage, all things catered for including ample & good quality kitchen appliances, cutlery, crockery, pots & pans, cleaning products.
Bay view, open fireplace, very comfortable bed & quality bedding.
Very warm & peaceful insulated house. Lack of bench space for food prep in kitchen.
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Geoff (10/5): Exceptional - The beautiful setting, peaceful, and everything you need for a restful break away! Nothing, it was perfect!
- Judith (7/5): Charming cottage at great location. - Charming cottage at a great location. Lots of space and amenities were good. However, it was superficially cleaned with still a lot of cob webs and dust on surfaces, hair on wooden ledge in bathroom.
- Susan (10/5): Loved every minute, my second time, will go again - Not applicable
- Tarryn (8/5): Very good -
- Gordon (9/5): Nice place cleaner needs a wake up - I process to pay for the linen and the 'bond' was cumbersome and messy. Wasted a lot of time.

- Sasa (10/5): Highly recommended! - Exceptional view! Such a beautiful vintage house! All good.
- Sara (9/5): A Fabulous Summer Retreat - Wow! The character of this 19th century cottage was fantastic - it was like stepping back in time but with modern day appliances.
It was very light and bright with lots of windows.
I loved the wrap around deck with the seaview.
The gardens are beautiful - so pretty.
The house was very large and had plenty of room.
It was very clean and the bed we slept in was so comfortable. It did feel very homely.
I really felt relaxed.
Very peaceful.
A great base for walks. We stayed for a few days midweek in November but unfortunately, apart from the local post office, nothing was open and we had to travel to Cowes for cafes & restaurants.

- Simon (9/5): Superb -
- Lynne (9/5): Beautiful cottage with gorgeous views of Rhyll inlet. Great amenities, clean - Quaint olde world charm with modern conveniences in beautiful location. Lovely gardens
- Peter (10/5): Excellent -
- Mel (10/5): Stunning views and amazing cottage - Perfect location with stunning views. Beautiful historic cottage and must admit was initially concerned about the house keeping warm due to its age, in the middle of a cold snap in Melbourne, but was very pleasantly surprised. Great location and beautiful cottage I'm being uber picky but some of the door knobs were so loose as to feel like they would fall off in your hand.
Couldn't get the WiFi to connect.
- Wendy (9/5): Such a special place to stay, filled with old world charm with all the comforts of hk. - A lovely cottage, very charming. We had everything we needed for a fabulous long weekend away with our family. The property was amazing but the extra bond and linen charge was difficult to organise as we were traveling from NZ
- Jennifer (8/5): Can recommend a stay in a delightful old property. - Loved the old world charm and the peace and quiet. House beautifully presented and my husband and friend's husband enjoyed setting the fire and enjoying the open fire in the evening. Everything was fine.
- Despina (8/5): overall we loved the stay - the house was comfortable and provided enough space for a family of 5. We loved the location which was central to all the main attractions and not far from central town needed to pay an additional fee for linen to be provided, no face washers
needed to purchase firewood
a new frying pan is needed
some more coffee would have been a bonus :-)
- Paula (10/5): Stop looking, this is the holiday house for you! - Everything. It’s an absolute gem. Full of history and charm. So well equipped and very spacious. Nothing
- Angelika (8/5): Very good -
- Jean (10/5): Exceptional -
- Papawarin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jakem13 (6/5): Incredible property but shame about the pre-check in experience. - The property was gorgeous, over looking the ocean with a beautiful terrace. The photos actually don't do it justice, its much nicer than we expected and super clean. The master bedroom was simply amazing. Great location and a lovely farm shop 5 minute walk away. The reason for my low score was due to a less than ideal pre check in experience. We were text the night before that we have to manually bank transfer the owner if we want to get clean laundry and sheets or to bring our own. As well as this you have to transfer a deposit of $100 incase of damages despite paying in advance for the property. When I questioned all this, we were told to check the small print (which it was in) but it certainly was not clear when booking the accommodation. We were just 2 people looking for a chill weekend away and not want you want to go through the day before a weekend away. We would stay again as the property is gorgeous but would suggest changing their pre-check in process or making it much clearer on booking.com.
- Jelena (9/5): Superb -
- Kenny (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alison (9/5): Lovely weekend away, full of charm - Lovely old building, full of charm and all the basics you need for a weekend away The charm
- Tammy (10/5): Relaxing and peaceful atmosphere, a true home away from home - The property has such a beautiful atmosphere, you instantly relax the moment you pull up to the gate. It’s is well appointed with everything you need. The split systems kept the house lovely and cozy which is important during winter months, and Angeline was lovely to deal with. Such a great experience. Highly recommend. Nothing!
- Howard (10/5): Filled our need for creature comforts and natural surrounds. - The ambience of the home and garden, the view, the tranquility. No firewood but we had been advised in advance about that and instructed where to purchase it.
- Lyndal (9/5): Superb -
- Michelle (10/5): perfect place to regroup for another week! - cute little cottage that had beautiful views and dog friendly! nothing at all
- Maureen (8/5): We had a wonderful time here for the two days. Would have loved to stay longer. - Perfect location.
Easy walk to restaurant and general store. Within easy drive of other shopping areas and attractions. Would definitely recommend Beautiful soft feather quilts and pillows BUT sadly no suitable for those with allergies. A little general maintenance required but in an historic home this is understandably an ongoing situation.
- Sean (9/5): Superb - Peaceful setting, good view from the main bedroom and only a short walk to waterfront, marina and restaurant. Great community with plenty to see and do around the island. Loved the history of the cottage and sharing a local bottle of wine in front of the open log fire. Very warm and cosy cottage.
- Frank (9/5): Superb -
- Patricia (9/5): Superb - Very quaint cottage with lovely views, natural light, & relaxing ambience. Comfortable beds & furniture & good quality linen & towells. Olde worlde feel which brought back childhood memories. Husband attended GP circuit for 3 days & I was content to relax at cottage or take easy stroll down to nearby beach. Weather was a mixed bag but it didn't matter. Would definitely recommend to anyone considering staying there. It was all good.
- Simone (9/5): Superb - The house was huge with 2
Lounges/sitting rooms. 1 has a piano and fireplace, super comfy lounges with views. 2nd has huge tv. No veggie patch
- Janet (9/5): our stay was very enjoyable, location very quiet but within easy. reach of all philip island and country side has to off - staying in a heritage home, was exceptional, no where to unpack car with out getting drenching wet,
- Mec (9/5): Superb - Primer holiday location and serenity of surroundings. Getaway from town/city environment at the seaside. Not anything i can think of
