Guest Reviews
- Maddie (10/5): A beautiful oasis getaway - The location was amazing, we named it our oasis. You drive on a dirt road through farmland and dry scrub and turn into this beautiful oasis. Tall lush trees, everything was green and flowering. We loved the garden and the pool. The house was very cute, decorated in a classic cottage style with some modern flair.
The amenities were perfect and the cottage is newly built, you can tell it's all fresh. It really made us feel like we were living in luxury. Took a little bit to sort out the wifi as the starlink for the property was down and we needed to re-boot it. However the manager of the property was quick to help us. The pool needed some updating and the furniture/decor didn't really match or wasn't consistent throughout the house. The door knobs on the doors would rattle a bit when you used them and the doors didn't click into place so the wind would open the doors constantly.
Would be nice to have some small garden lights so at nighttime you can see them across the garden or even some fairy lights. These things did not effect our stay! Just some small areas that could be improved but not essential.
- Christina (10/5): Thank you, Mark and Wendy, for this beautiful haven of peace and relaxation. - It felt like an Eden garden, a true little paradise. The property blends the feeling of France, Portugal, Italy, and Australia into one beautiful place. The garden is large and inviting, perfect for wandering and relaxing, and the cottage sits naturally within this stunning landscape. There’s also a large pool to use. It is a wonderful place to relax and truly destress. The beds are amazingly comfortable and look out onto the garden.
- Sutton (9/5): Enjoyable - The locality and gardens No strove
- Jones (8/5): -
- Ron Voigt (10/5): A magnificent property to explore and enjoy. - The Olives was a quiet secluded property close to local amenities but far enough away to enjoy the quiet country retreat.
The home was beautifully presented and very comfortable with everything you need for a stay away from home. We can not wait to spend more time there in the near future. There isn't a thing we were disappointed about except that it wasn't warm enough to enjoy the pool. It's a magical experience with lovely gardens to enjoy.
- Martin (8/5): Overall it’s a good location.very clean and tidy. - Privacy

- Mohit (10/5): Absolute Gem - The Garden Cottage at The Olives is an absolute gem and the perfect getaway spot. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by how immaculately clean and well-maintained everything was. The beds are incredibly comfortable, ensuring a restful night’s sleep, and the cottage is equipped with all the amenities you could possibly need. The surroundings are stunning—lush greenery, beautifully kept grounds, and just a short walk from the beach. It’s a peaceful haven, offering total serenity and calm, which made it easy to relax and truly switch off. One of the highlights for me was star watching at night; the clear skies and quiet atmosphere made it a magical experience. Whether you're looking for a quiet retreat or a base near the beach, this place ticks every box. I genuinely didn’t want to leave. I’ll be coming back again without a doubt—this place is something truly special.

- Dennis (9/5): Quiet, peaceful and relaxing. - The Cottage at the Olives is a lovely and peaceful spot. The cottage is well appointed and quite comfortable, and the grounds are beautiful. We didn't partake of the pool, but it looked very nice. It is unfortunate that the lovely gardens have suffered quite a bit from the drought this summer, some shrubs are dying and many plants are clearly stressed, while others are doing fine, such as the huge oaks in front of the cottage.
- Pearse (10/5): A beautiful and comfortable cottage in an ideal setting. - A beautiful estate with lovely gardens to walk around. The beds were comfortable and the breakfast provisions were a welcome surprise! The sunset looks gorgeous over the property. Loved the potting shed, even though we didn't go in! Not an issue at all, but we used the pool and weren't sure what to do about the pool cleaner. It was different from the instructions (not attached to a cord/pipe) and sitting at the bottom of the pool unmoving. But the pool was lovely and warm, clean except a few leaves we scooped up.
Also, no indoor dining table was a drawback.
- Paul (10/5): Tranquil and peaceful rural hideaway - Beautiful and tranquil location, felt like our own private oasis. Cottage was well presented and the location was handy to the beach and the local town. Kitchen was fine for us but might be limiting if you planned to cook a lot at the cottage
- Leanne (10/5): A relaxing stay in beautiful surroundings, with a pool. We couldn't ask for more. - Beautiful location, the accommodation was very clean and comfortable. It exceeded our expectations.
- Daniel (10/5): Perfect spot to recharge and enjoy - Perfect get away for our family Pool for the kid, garden for the wife, bed for the dad
- Tracy (9/5): Superb -
- Lisa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ian (10/5): A really tranquil setting to stroll through the gardens , read or relax and unwind , whilst still a short distance to th - Tranquil setting in the surrounds of a magnificent garden setting
- Beverley (10/5): Having stayed twice before at the Garden Cottage It was the obvious place to stay. - The breakfast provided was unexpected and very welcome Small indoor table and chairs for eating meals
- Sandra (10/5): Exceptional - Glorious garden setting.
- Ella (10/5): Truly a memorable stay. - The grounds are lovely and the buildings very much in keeping with the Tuscan ambience. The cottage was away from the main road and we loved the peace and privacy. The cottage is beautifully furnished with attention to every detail - eg sprigs of lavender on the linen. The provisions for breakfast were a bonus.
- Ran (9/5): Superb -
- Beverley (10/5): Wonderfully relaxing and calming on the very stressed 3 days we were in South Australia - Breakfast wonderful as we arrived too late to get in supplies for the following morning The beds were super comfortable and furnishings great. It would have been helpful to have a small table and chairs for eating meal inside. It was too hot to use the outdoor tables and chairs. I imagine it would be uncomfortably cold in winter outside as well. This being said there is no way we would stay anywhere else Yankalilla except the Olives
- Sean (10/5): Romantic Getaway - Quiet, peaceful, great location, private, clean, tidy, great amenities and good value for money. One of the best places I have ever stayed.
- Anna (8/5): Very good -
- Jo (8/5): Gorgeous cottage and surroundings; great pool but pool and poolside should have been clean and ready - The cottage was excellent. Lovely and spacious, very well equipped, nice styling and mostly very clean, just a bit dusty under/behind furniture.
The gardens were lovely but perhaps needing a bit of tidying; the location was good although not possible to walk to the village. The wifi didn’t work at all while we there; we stayed for a full week.
The part that didn’t meet my expectations was the pool. I had asked at the time of booking if the pool would be available for our use as that was a key reason for choosing this property. It was, but did not seem to have been prepared: the pool water was not clean and had a lot of debris - leaves, feathers, peeling paint and many other bits in the water. The poolside furniture was very dirty with lots of bird muck on the table, chairs and loungers to the extent that it was unusable. I had to ask the on-site host to clean it, which he did do later that day, but in general the pool area was a bit unkempt and becoming a bit overgrown and bird muck all on the tiles round the pool as well. The cushions for the loungers must have been left outside for months as they were very damaged, mouldy and green slime on them and only fit for scrap heap - they were unusable.
Also it was quite hard work to have to put the pool cover off and on every time we used the pool; I thought this would have been done by the host.
The on-site host was very busy and distracted while we were there and we barely saw them. This was not an issue in itself but I think explained why the pool had not been checked and prepared for our use.
- Paula (10/5): Perfect place to unwind and relax with the kids. Mark was a very gracious and amenable host. Thoroughly recommend the pl -
- Mal (9/5): Superb -
- Joanne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adam (10/5): An excellent place to stay in a beautiful corner of South Australia. - The Garden Cottage was a wonderful place to stay for two nights. Serene, private, and in stunning grounds. Small touches such as fresh breakfast provisions created a welcoming feel. It was self check-in. The cottage was so well hidden in the gardens we were t sure whether to head left or right at the end of the driveway.
- Malcolm (9/5): Superb - No table inside to eat in winter.
- Darren (10/5): The whole experience was awesome and the family enjoyed the peace and quiet. Highly recommend!!! - The option was available to cook or go out for breakfast! Mark kindly provided breakfast food also which was unexpected but very nice! The Cottage was perfect!! Right down to the lavender on the towels!!
- Pauline (9/5): Superb - Almost everything Missing a table to eat from and put computers on!
- Synnott (10/5): Exceptional -
- Beverley (10/5): We loved it and were sorry we hadn't planned to stay longer. Will do to see our Yankalilla friend - Very generous breakfast we were not expecting most welcome after a long drive from Melbourne Kitchenette so well equipped could cook an excellent meal with ease Were surprised considering the above(well appointed kitchen)that there was no little table and chairs inside . We were lucky with the weather so could eat at the table on the patio using the outdoor furniture. A small round table could have replaced the large sideboard under the television or a rectangular narrow one which could have fitted.
- Cath (10/5): Perfect place to relax and unwind. Very well appointed and the hosts were welcoming and helpful. - Very well appointed venue. Provisions were more than adequate and very much appreciated.
The surroundings were lovely- it was nice to wander around the gardens that had lots of little nooks to explore. Equally as nice to sit and enjoy the view from the barn.
- Robyn (9/5): Superb - Peaceful, delightful garden and surrounds. Impeccably furnished. All we could have wished
- Th (10/5): Comfortable and relaxed - Very clean, comfortable and tranquil.
- David (10/5): Great garden getaway near the beach and wineries - This holiday cottage is situated in a beautiful private garden surrounded by ancient, and very big, olive trees. There are two bedrooms on either side of a central sitting and kitchen space, with comfortable king (or king single) beds. The owner's house (which dates from the 1850s, with an 1870s front) is nearby but the cottage is very private. The garden is very impressive, especially for such challenging soil and climate, based on a long lawn with stone wall terraces and extensive planting of ivy-geraniums, oleander, lavender and such like. A pear tree near the house is supposed to be one of the oldest in SA. There is a nice country walk, if fairly lengthy, going out the gate and around the town and back, through the rolling hills of Yankalilla. The main street has some interesting buildings going back to the 1850s, notably the tiny Anglican church, which is usual openand had good stained glass, leading to the beach at Normanville. It is a good base for doing the McLaren vale wineries, as well as Strathalbyn and Victor Harbour, and you can even do a day trip to King Island from the ferry further down the coast.
- Joan (8/5): So relaxing. Peaceful. Really felt like we had left all our cares behind. - Breakfast provisions were amazing.
Fresh seasonal fruit delivered by Mark,
Gardens were really worth exploring.
The extra touch of fresh flowers. Lavender on the towels too! As we are older, a table (even a small one) inside would have been nice.
- Brad (10/5): Exceptional - super cosy cottage surrounded by a beautiful garden, loved the complimentary eggs and bacon on an unsealed road
- Suhasini (9/5): I had a lovely relaxing stay at the cottage - They provided a lovely selection of breakfast items
- Michaela (10/5): A beautiful garden oasis tucked away. - The cottage is very comfortable with lovely views of the beautiful gardens! Luxurious beds and everything you need in the kitchen. The host is very welcoming and helpful, adding welcoming touches such as home made jam.
- Alisha (10/5): Exceptional - It was absolutely stunning! Mark and Kenton were amazing! We didn't book it for longer.
- Dino (9/5): A lovely stay. Amazing gardens. Very quiet. Very comfortable beds. A short drive out of town. -
- Roslyn (10/5): A very comfortable cottage in a beautiful setting - Very comfortable cottage in beautiful garden setting nothing
- Chris (9/5): Superb -
- Mick (9/5): Great place to have a relaxing getaway - Excellent location great gardens and to sit in the sun and listening to the bird’s. the stars at night were awesome
