Guest Reviews
- MARK (10/5): Just what we wanted - Breakfast excellent.
- Andrea (10/5): -
- Adam (10/5): -
- Carol (8/5): Pleasant overnight stay - Quirky, love that !!
Dog friendly!! Hard to find!
- Doreen (9/5): - Unique accommodation. The owner has set this up as something different, with charm and antiquities. We were trying to find the location in the dark and had been guided not to go down the dirt road, but we didn't realise how far along we needed to go to get to the actual road (perhaps the name of the road, not just the Nursery name, could be mentioned as we were using a GPS).
- Mick (10/5): Lovely Place to Stay - The Retreat is spacious, well equipped and full of character. Meals are wonderful, and guests are well looked after. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
- Barbara (10/5): Just perfect, warm welcoming hosts to a most interesting and special B&B - Just a totally different B&B experience. The decor and gardens just so interesting , an artist at work in every way. The hostess Steph was an absolute delight , welcoming and generous in sharing the history of her vision. This was an example of upmarket recycling but with the ultimate in taste. I highly recommend this B&B if you like quirky but oh so tasteful ,comfortable and very quiet…no car sounds just birds and peace. That I didn’t have meals there. Steph generously and unsolicited provided me some examples of her love of cooking… I realised very quickly that I had missed a wonderful opportunity to more fully enjoy her talents. I didn’t meet Rob but I understand from Stef that he is an equally talented cook.
- Heather (9/5): -
- Chris (8/5): Clean and comfy. A great respite from driving - The property was well presented and the owner was there to greet us and show us around
Be aware the property is out of the central area of town Not enough direct lighting - too much of the mood lighting for my liking. A little cluttered.
- Ylenia (10/5): A whimsical place to stay, truly a retreat. So pet friendly and human friendly too! Thank you Stef and Rob for your hosp -
- Anne (10/5): Hidden Gem! - The Cottage had so much character and being dog friendly is fantastic! We didn't like that we could only stay for one night. Lol
- Bozic (10/5): -
- Jessica (10/5): -
- Michelle (10/5): -
- Kate (9/5): - Despite Booking.com not notifying the host that we were coming, once we got through the confusion our host was very gracious and sorted a room for us to stay in. Booking.com 🤬
They stuffed up our booking by not letting the venue know we were coming, despite taking our money and confirming our stay. I recommend checking out what's available via booking.com and then making your reservation directly with your host.
- Mitchel (10/5): -
- Ashok (10/5): Fun, Unique Cabin - We loved how the spacious cabin was decorated with fun and unique items. The host Stef was super friendly and helpful.
- Cruzat (1/5): - nothing late answer phone call
- Riaan (8/5): Loved the history and atmosphere of the place!! Very helpful staff. - History and atmosphere of the place
- Garry (8/5): Wonderful, will stay again if travelling through the area. - Quiet, peaceful, rural and friendly.
- Ingrid (9/5): A brief retreat in comfort - It was a quirky cottage with everything you need and more. Access to the garden was lovely and the personal touches and friendliness of Stef and family appreciated. Nothing
- Louise Anne (10/5): - Wonderful hosts who put up with my Labrador puppy who kept running off with things. The property is more like a retreat than accommodation. The accommodation is a work of art and to boot antiques that take you back in time. I couldn't rate this property high enough. Do yourself a favour and visit this enchanting property and at least give yourself 3 nightS to unwind and to take in your beautiful surroundings. There was not one thing that I did not like except my dogs behaviour 😬
- Karen (10/5): French inspired, quirky, historic & such a wonderful stay experience! - It was a wonderful experience, being a French inspired home & locally historic. It was quirky, eclectic & suited me perfectly as a solo traveller. I felt like I was in a small village in France! There was so much to look at within The Retreat & both hosts were so lovely. I only wish I could have stayed longer! Merci Stef & Rob
- Jessica (10/5): -
- Louise Anne (10/5): An enchanting accommodation with a mix of quirky, modern and French Renaissance. - The Cottage and gardens were beautiful. The furnishings in the cottage were tasteful and in keeping with the antique furniture and many items used in timez past. The hosts were very accommodating to us and our dog who was also welcomed. Thank you, your accommodation was enchanting and I would highly recommend it to all. A must to experience... Not applicable
- Sanjeev (8/5): It was great. The room was cool and comfy in the hot weather. It was clean. The dugs fur in the carpets could have been - Location was good and the room was clean. The bed was comfortable. There were visible dog’s fur in the carpets so, that was a bit no for me since i am not used to letting dogs inside the bedroom. No smart tv, only had 2/3 channels to watch.
- Jason (9/5): We will be back and will recommend to everyone - The location was great , room was cosy and the bonus of able to order home cooked meals for a reasonable price was truely special. Thanks Rob and Stef for an amazing stay. Bed was a little uncomfortable but still good.
- Samuel (10/5): -
- Brendan (10/5): The staff were so lovely and I would highly recommend this accomodation. - The staff were lovely and the facilities were perfect Nothing was bad, there were no issues
- James (10/5): Superb accommodation with beautiful character and a homely touch. The host Stef was SUPERB! - Stef is a wonderful host. Staying at A La Folly is like having someone's arms wrapped around you. It's beautifully furnished with love and attention to detail. We had breakfast included in the tariff, which was a lovely surprise. Crepes or Pancakes! Stef is French, so the Crepes and Pancakes were superb (I'll let you do your own French accent for the word 'superb'!) :-)
Unlike sterile hotel/motel rooms, A La Folly is full of character and comfort. It's also close to (within 2km) of the main drag in Murray Bridge, which has improved a lot over the years. We loved our 2 night stay there and will be back when we visit our friends in Murray Bridge again. Can't recommend it more than A++++++ What's not to like??????
- Christine (6/5): -
- Donnie (10/5): - Very cute and interesting! Stef was fantastic Nothing
- Daniel (10/5): We'd recommend A La Folly to anyone (we already have). - We had a really lovely stay at A La Folly. We stayed in the Retreat which was beautifully whimsical but had all the practical things we needed. The bed was comfy. There was plenty of space. The gardens are fun to explore and the surrounding countryside is starkly beautiful.
- Louise (10/5): - Loved every little thing oh and the biggest Cat Book ever.
A beautiful peaceful nights sleep
- Annette (10/5): -
- Sandra (10/5): An Uplifting Accommodation Experience - Very welcoming. Peaceful. ( a cacophony of bird songs ) Dog friendly. Court yard where dogs could be off lead, supervised. Amazing room interior and gardens. Showering with Fresians is a new experience! Delightful! Lighting, taps, nick naks, stone walls, wooden bathroom sink, art work, sleeping under stars.....etc etc , eclectic. I really liked the height of the very comfortable bed. Hosts support horse rescue...Windemere Horse Santuary, if my memory serves correct. There over Christmas so most things in Murray Bridge & Tailem Bend closed, as expected. Lots of parks & things to see and do close by:
Coorong, River, Monarto Zoo. You could be as busy or as vegged out as you like!!! Really nothing to dislike. Breakfast not included in room rate, but room had all regular facilities for making a meal. The hosts can make meals for you if you put in requests . Apparently they make great crepes for breakfast. Diabetic, so I organised my own food. Full sized fridge, microwave, induction hot plate etc.
- Scott (9/5): -
- Tania (10/5): Highly recommended - Breakfast very good.
Accomodation excellent Nothing
- Thomas (10/5): -
- Phil (8/5): -
- Gilbert (10/5): - A La Folly is a charming retreat that blends history, comfort, and nature beautifully. The stone cottage is spotless and thoughtfully equipped, with a cozy bed, lounge, and kitchen. The secret gardens are peaceful, perfect for morning coffee or sunset relaxation, tucked away in a cosy courtyard.
The hosts are welcoming and attentive, making the stay feel personal without being intrusive. Everything—from the walk-in shower to the little touches of heritage—creates a restful, memorable experience. Nil, evening was great
- Stéphane (10/5): Stef and Rob have created an exceptional little island of beaufy and peace with an amazing vibe. - Beautifully decorated rooms with individual style, full amenities, wonderful welcome from the owners. A little hidden gem, recommended to everyone! Nothing, it was all great!
- Griffen (9/5): Worthwhile, a pleasant discovery. - Very friendly welcome with a full brief of facilities. Reminded me so much of places we had stayed in France, a little quirky - but with a country Aussie style. Loved the rural landscape, looking over the river flood plains a few kangaroos were grazing in the morning sun. Lots of interesting memorabilia, plenty to take in, need a couple of nights at least.
- Ruth (10/5): A La Folly was an extremely delightful surprise from the warm welcome both we and our dogs received from Stef. Our stay - Finding a dog friendly B&B was wonderful. But we would have been just as delighted even not looking for a dog friendly place as everything about A La Folly was wonderful, eclectic and peaceful. That we only had an overnight stay and didn’t order breakfast.
- Claudia (9/5): We were sad to leave and will return. - Breakfast was not included in the cost for us and we chose not to order breakfast as we are not really breakfast eaters and we went out in the morning. The only little thing was that at 6'5 the bed was slightly short but that would be the only real criticism in the cottage/room.
- Colleen (9/5): Quaint cottage - What was not to like, lovely hosts, quiet location, lovely cottage. There were ample power points located in each area. Plenty of night light to help navigating at night. Our rooms had steps that lead to the front door that were in need of some repairs.
- Mark (10/5): Highly recommend it as a great place to stay, only 10 minutes to main town and restaurants - Everything, had lots of character, lots of interesting items to look at and read, the buildings had lots of history which I really enjoyed Everything was excellent
- Gari (9/5): Lovely spot to stay. - Extremely quaint accomodation replicating a stay in a French country cottage.
- Deborah (9/5): Comfortable home away from home - A quirky place that quickly feels like home. A la Folly was immaculately clean and very comfortable. The owners are lovely and friendly and try very hard to made you feel welcome. Delicious crepes and orange juice served for breakfast is the cherry on top. Nothing
- Holly (9/5): Lovely retreat - Stef was a lovely host. A very cute, quirky little cottage. Was lovely and quiet.
- Joy (10/5): Stef and Rob were wonderful hosts - Unique, charming and very welcoming
- Linda (10/5): A La Folly - C’est Si Bon - Such an interesting, peaceful property filled with an eclectic mix of all sorts of things (even an original Scrabble!) And the bed sheets are like getting a big hug when you get into bed. Nothing. It was a perfect place to watch the sunrise and to just sit and breathe
- David (10/5): Wow! C'etait magnifique and tres paisible. Or in Australian: bloody good! - What did we like? Everything! This B&B is not called La Folly for nothing; it is Quirky with a capital Q. We stayed at The Retreat which is one of two rooms available, and it was full of discoveries and eccentricities that could be expected from a regional French B&B. In fact, one of the proprietors, Steph, is of French origin: very friendly and a superb cook who provided a magnificent crepe breakfast. Her husband, Rob, is also a mean cook and prepared an equally magnificent evening meal for us at a very reasonable cost. The Retreat has a very comfortable bed, a comfy sitting area, and dining area and a well appointed bathroom - more a suite than a room. Given the opportunity, we will definitely return. We loved everything - the room, the hosts, and Chopper the Dog. But as it is located a little out of town (not a bad thing!!) a vehicle is essential.
- William (9/5): Superb -
- Kirsty (10/5): Exceptional -
- Philip (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gayle (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful peaceful setting, friendly hosts. Fantastic breakfast and presentation was excellent.
- Michael (10/5): A truly memorable stay at an amazing place. - Great location (especially if you are visiting Monarto Safari Park), beautiful accommodation and welcoming hosts. Everything was wonderful, including a delicious breakfast in the morning. Nothing. Everything was perfect.
- Graham (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dan (9/5): Fun, quirky place to stay. - It is a cottage with a dining area, living room and private washroom. The furnishings attire antiques and there are lots of interesting knick knacks. The crepes were very tasty.
- Tamie (9/5): Superb -
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matt (7/5): Good - Okay, clean, tidy, and friendly hosts.
- Williams (10/5): Peaceful, friendly, comfortable - A La Folly was wonderful as usual! Staying longer!
- Rachael (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were very friendly on arrival. They also personally handed us breakfast each morning. The retreat was very well presented and clean and they were very accommodating for our dog. They also put up happy birthday signs and balloons as we mentioned it was my birthday and my dogs birthday. Nothing it was all perfect
- Beggs (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (10/5): very relaxing after a long drive and extreme heat - Excellent personal meal prepared with fresh ingredients we very much enjoyed our breakfast. Loved it all and would stay again if we are in Murray Bridge
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional - Great better lighting for reading
- Rohan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adrienne (10/5): Warm and Welcoming...a beautiful place to stay! - Stef and Rob have a beautiful and unique property in Murray Bridge. It was so nice to get away from the city feel of accommodation to arrive at a bespoke and creatively designed space with all the amenities for a very comfortable stay. La Folly is very special and we have not stayed anywhere like it. So much to discover and enjoy! On arrival we were met with a warm and lovely welcome - with a bonus of Chopper their super friendly dog and their pretty cats (who are a little shy!) Stef has a beautiful peacock, chickens as well as some horses that she fosters. I missed my furry family while I was on holiday, so it was lovely to have this experience as a part of the stay. Stef was engaging and she looked after us- from great conversation through to the wonderful breakfast of pancakes with smiley faces on them! If you choose La Folly, it is absolutely worth staying more than one night! It is a great location for all attractions close to Murray Bridge and the River as well as being near a wonderful dark sky tourism area.
- Hosking (9/5): Charming, romantic and truly memorable. - The breakfast and overall genuine hospitality from hosts were a highlight. We also loved the quirky vibe of the accomodation - it felt very much like we were staying with old friends in our own private retreat. Everywhere we looked we found something else to read, a nostalgic game to play, vintage trinkets to admire. The gardens were home to lots of native birds and made for a truly gorgeous regional escape.
We also loved the location - nested just a couple of Kms north of the city centre and a 20 minute walk to the river, it was quiet enough to give the slow holiday experience we were looking for, whilst still being close enough to the main township for the convenience of general shops and community. The location also presented an easy drive to a range of local wineries, galleries, op shops, river activities and, for the fully committed star-gazers, the doorstep of The River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve. This was well worth the drive to witness the Milky Way in a way we'd never seen it before.
The dog-friendly nature of the accomodation was another real bonus. We have told several people about this special spot since our stay and so look forward to visiting again some day! The *only* thing that may have made the stay even more comfortable would have been slightly more kitchen amenities. I was looking forward to a few days of cooking at the accom, and whilst I enjoyed the challenge of working in a small space as expected, it would have been useful to have a few extra bits n pieces (ie, a kitchen knife, lids for pots, a strainer, a hanging dish rack), or a disclosure of these limitations on the booking form just so I could plan better :) but we still made it work and I still cooked some really tasty food!
- Stephanie (10/5): I enjoyed it, beautiful place. -
- Susan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tessav (10/5): Gorgeous B&B - A wonderful place to relax for the weekend. The host, Stef, is lovely, the bed is comfy, the ambience is gorgeous and the crepes are the best outside of France! Thank you for a great experience; we'll be back!
- Belinda (10/5): Prefect place to stay if travelling with dogs - The accommodation was so cute! Beautiful and interesting antique interior design. The hosts were so welcoming. The breakfast was delicious. The best part is how dog friendly the property is! Gorgeous enclosed courtyard for our pup to run around in and explore, bowl of water waiting for him & treated like a VIP guest. He had the best time which in turn led us to having a great time. Nothing really
- Wahab (10/5): Exceptional -
- Martin (9/5): Gorgeous, quaint true cottage accommodation in a very quiet relaxing location, still close to town. - Liked almost everything offered, especially their canine host Chopper. He was lovely. So many little bonuses. Decent bath towels and bath mat, lovely bath robes, great shower pressure and very hot water. Gorgeous "french"room touches, thanks to Steph our French host. Breakfast not the strongest point, except the crepes which were lovely. Definitely not a deal breaker though.
- Teeps (10/5): Fantastic! Can we rate it 11 out of 10?! - Stef and Rob were such lovely hosts. Warm, welcoming, great to chat to.
Our room was fabulous - quirky with lots of interesting items, vintage furniture and really excellent facilities.
Do get the dinner option - the meals which Stef made were absolutely delicious. not a single thing
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Kennedy (8/5): Pet friendly, staff were lovely and the room was cosy. - Pet friendly, staff were lovely and the room was cosy. Lighting was confusing.
- Stephen (10/5): A wonderful secret to be shared on the outskirts of Murray Bridge! - The warmth of Stef was the highlight of our stay. She and Rob have put a lot of love, effort and hard work into their property resulting in a location full of quirky flair and history and concern for the environment. The accommodation ticks all the boxes with unique features everywhere. But the really outstanding features are the personal touches of our host, spending time to get to know us and share her story while delivering great food and conversation. If I had to find something to be critical about, I can't!
- Tn, (9/5): Superb - Our host was very friendly and helpful. We were able to enjoy delicious home cooked breakfasts and dinner. The cottage was spotless!
- Kerrie (9/5): My stay here was comfortable and away from the hustle and bustle of Murray Bridge, but was only a five minute drive away - Stef and family were so friendly and couldnt do enough for me
- Terry (8/5): Very good - Loved the garden and outside sitting areas very peaceful lots of birds .Hosts were excellent. My wife enjoyed the cooking lesson and I enjoyed eating the result. Excellent location if visiting Monarto Wildlife Park easy 10 minute drive Found indoors a bit dark but wasn't put off by this as most time spent outdoors
- John (10/5): Charming, delightful, magical. - It was very charming, as if it was out of a fairy tale. Stef was a wonderful host and we recommend her cooking for she prepared as a wonderful French dinner. Not a thing!
- Ian (10/5): Looking forward to next time. - Both Stef & Rob Randall are wonderful hosts.
They care about making the stay a meaningful experience.
Both Gloria and I look forward to our next travels to S.A and once again spending time at A La Folly.
- Tanya (9/5): Superb - The property was really well set out and was so peaceful. Our host was lovely and very accomadating in every way. She cooked us some beautiful 2 course meals which were wonderful and the crepes, continental and cooked breakfast were fabulous too. The cottage was well set out with lots of gorgeous antiques all around the bed was super comfy and warm. The only things that made our stay a 9 not a ten were that the air-conditioner didn't get our cottage as warm as we would have liked. And the shower in our cottage was a little small for me but we were offered the shower outside which was bigger and which I used.
- Melanie (10/5): Just wow! Beautiful people, beautiful place beautiful stay! - Just beautiful! Stef has created an incredible place that is warm and welcoming and just everything about it! If I had to pick something, and it’s a tiny thing, the shower wasn’t easy to use for those on the chunkier side. But does the job and pressure was great.
- Madison (10/5): Amazing - Such a warm and welcoming environment we loved every bit of it.
- Lisa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bianca (10/5): Wonderful venue and hosts, highly recommend. We will be back one day. - So cosy and quaint. Beds very comfortable.
Attention to detail is superb.
Parking is excellent, accommodation is very clean and super quiet.
Hosts are so hospitable and caring.
Crepes were super delicious.
- Veronica (10/5): Quirky and fantastic - I loved everything. The cute decor, the extra little touches. The great welcome for my old labrador. Stef was extremely helpful and welcoming felt like home. Highly recommend. There was nothing at all that I didn't like.
- Koula (10/5): Exceptional - Charming property and owner, fascinating garden, great breakfast, a fond memory.
- Judy (7/5): Lovely host family. - I have restricted food tolerances so always make my own food wherever I stay. No complaints.
- Piriangaoa (10/5): Like a stay in a fairy-tale place. - The crepes tasted just like in France, beautifully decorated plates as well. The rooms were like a living museum, so many things to look at, leaf through and even discover (like the starry ceiling at night). Super-nice hosts, chatty but discreet. It was an almost magical place :-) There was nothing at all we did not like, the place was perfect.
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jasmin (10/5): Beautiful peaceful haven. Can’t recommend enough - The B&b is exquisite in its eclectic decor. The place is easy to find, the bed was so comfy, the water was hot with good pressure in the outdoor shower and the breakfast was a delicious treat. Highly recommend and would stay again. There is a microwave, tea and coffee, a heater if needed (not needed on my stay as was so cosy) and eco home touches everywhere. It’s so quiet and relaxing, loved it. The family are so welcoming and the dog is the cutest.
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional - A La folly was one of the best places we stayed. The owners were friendly and welcoming .Definitely booking again . Going home
- Telia (10/5): Such a beautiful place - This stay was so much more than I expected. Thank you for the wonderful breakfast and generous hospitality. Nothing
