Guest Reviews
- Bart (10/5): Zeer aangenaam - Uitstekende en vriendelijke service. Prima ontbijt.
Zeer rustige ligging in landelijk gebied .

- Philip (8/5): A nice place to stay with a friendly and helpful host. - Lovely setting, and handy for the early ferry at Dunkirk. and David was a friendly and very considerate host. Clean, tidy, and a very good breakfast spread. Appreciated the thoughtful bags to take some breakfast to eat on the ferry. Not quite the quality/comfort level I’d generally expect for the price.
- Josiane (8/5): huiselijke sfeer - ontbijt tip top in orde

- Derek (10/5): - David was an excellent host and the room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was outstanding. There was nothing to dislike.
- Jan (10/5): Fantastisch !

- Warren (10/5): I've been staying at Varlet Farm for some 20 years. It's a home from home and as good as always - David, who runs owns and runs Varlet Farm, is a superb host. He provides free coffee and apple pie on arrival and a superb continental breakfast with lots of homemade food. He is happy to arrange taxis into Ypres or the surrounding towns and could not be more friendly or helpful. Nothing

- Alwette1626 (10/5): Tolles B&B in guter Lage.
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Hanna (10/5): Zeer aangenaam - Gezelligheid en rust
- Gillian (9/5): The welcome is warm and friendly at this family run working farm. - The breakfast is excellent, with clingfilm provided to make up a picnic lunch. If you need anything just ask, we were lent cycling maps, David will phone restaurants to make reservations if you wish. Lots of WW1 reference material available. Nothing
But “ I’ll be back ! “ ;+) Niets ; zelfs het weer was top !

- Mark (8/5): Lovely stay at Varlet farm. Perfect for our needs. - Fantastic Host (David). He provided a lovely breakfast in the morning with local cheeses, cold meats and Danish pastries. He will do soft boiled eggs or scrambled eggs to supplement the continental breakfast. He also makes home made jams and raisin bread! It is good for people with bicycles and motorbikes as they can be stored overnight undercover . A lot of world war 1 history associated with the property and an extensive range of books on the topic. David lent us maps and cycle route maps for the area.
- marie-paule (9/5): Uitstekend. Hier komt men tot rust - Heel vriedelijke host. Uitstekend ontbijt. Nieys op aan te merken. Niets
- Sharon (10/5): First class hospitality ! - Loved that it is a family farm with lots of history including a barn full of excavated WW1 relics. Our room was big and spacious bathroom, David made sure you have everything you need, Breakfasts are the best you’ll have with local bakery pastries and homemade jams, local cheeses and more, David will cook you eggs too, there are even bags on the table so you can take away anything you would like that you’ve left. Take David’s recommendations for evening meals as they were all good . Perfect quiet area close to Ypres and the WW1 battlefields etc . Nothing what so ever
- alexandra (10/5): -
- Martin (10/5): Exellent location. Wonderfull place - I had a wonderfull stay at Varlet Farm. It's the ultimate place for a short WW1 tour in the area. The farm was at the frontline in WW1 and can be found on military maps of this time. The owners are very friendly and have been collecting lots of relics found on their own land from WW1. It's an impressive collection. I stayed two nights and managed to do a tour along museums and memorial sites such as the Passendale memoral museum, Tyne Cot Cemetry, Flanders Field Museum in Ypres, The Hoge Crater Museum, Frontline Hoog museum and Hill 26 Sancturary Wood museum as also the German Studenten Friedhof. The Varlet Farm is very central to visit all these impressive musea and memoral sites. The farm is in a rural area. Dogs are allowed, the breakfast is wonderfull and the owner even made me a breakfast to take because I wanted to leave very early. If you want a World War I tour around Ypres or just a quiet stay this is the place to be! Very recomendable!
- Neil (9/5): Great cycling, peaceful, Amazing Breakfast - Breakfast is amazing, local and homemade.
Brilliant location for visiting WW1 sites and Ypres (need own transport)
Great for cycling round the area, many well signposted routes, Peace Route etc Stayed before, so was as expected
- Mario (9/5): - Alleen een beetje gehorig....verder top!
- Eddy (10/5): PRIMA - schitterend ontbijt, niets tekort, integendeel !
Niets
- LES (10/5): Perfect! - Perfect location easy to find , good parking spaces,7 good atmosphere
- Josef (10/5): Exceptional - Very pleasant environment and service, we rate it 11/10. possibility to charge electric car also very positive.
- Russell (10/5): Exceptional -
- Richard (10/5): Perfect. - What did we like? Everything. It was an outstanding stay which couldn't be faulted. A perfect host, super facilities, lovely family, great location. We couldn't have wished for a better stay and I'm hard pressed to think of anywhere I've stayed in over 60 years that has been as good as this; and I've travelled extensively worldwide.
- Staiger (9/5): Varlet Farm hits the spot. - Everything. Fabulous location for visiting region. Peaceful. Calm. Great host. Excellent location. Homemade bread and jam were very pleasant. Belgium beers in the fridge were top spec and very reasonably priced. Nothing fancy here but that is definitely praise. While stating here, you realise more about what is really important in life. Simple pleasures.
- Robert (10/5): Great place - This is a great place. Breakfast is like nothing anywhere else. Its in the countryside and close to several ww1 points of interest. The host David was first rate. That im not still there!
- Luc (9/5): A very welcoming and satisfying experience - thank you! - David went above and beyond what we expected. He welcomed us with a piece of lovely home made apple pie and gave us a lot of information about the region and places to go (including restaurants). He was extremely friendly and helpful and nothing was too much. Definitely to be recommended! No remarks here
- Ross (10/5): A super place - 1. David's hospitality 2. The generous breakfast 3. The spacious room 4. The practical stuff worked - lots of sockets, an easy to use shower, a good space for my bike 5. Advice on where to eat. Nothing really
- Philomena (10/5): A warm welcome in Varlet Farm 🚜 - Wonderful warm welcome, including delicious apple pie and hospitality!
The breakfast is outstanding 👌.
Our beloved dogs were given a similar welcome!
Furthermore, David thought ahead for us to suggest taking a lunch to enjoy during an active sightseeing day, which was really appreciated!
Looking forward to returning for a relaxing stay in the future 😀! Nothing!
- David (9/5): Very quiet, laid back and pleasant accommodation - The property is well designed, set in exceptionally quiet open countryside. The host David, made us feel welcome from arrival with coffee and cake. Free and easy with two lounge areas with their own drinks making facilities and honestly box for beers etc. Exceptional breakfast and well within striking distance of Ypres. Great base for exploring WW1 sites with groups of friends. Nothing😀
- Peter (8/5): Very good -
- Bernard (10/5): Comfortable place to stay while touring WW1 memorial sites. - Peter our host was very friendly and was waiting with cake when we arrived. The location in the countryside near Ypres is beautiful with the crops just starting to be ready to be harvested. Our room was comfortable with a large bathroom with shower. Breakfast was deliciisous with fresh bread, home made jams and local cheeses as well as a warm dish on each day. The farm was in the midst of the WW1 battles and has a small collection of artifacts found in the fields surrounding the farm. We were able to charge our EV during our stay. If you are cycling in the area the farm is conveniently on the Vredesroute (Peace Route).
- Paul (10/5): Comforting - Cute and traditional property on a functional farm, very pretty place to stay. Very clean also, we had a room for 3 people (3 single beds)- our room was spacious and very clean with tea and coffee facilities. The breakfast had a very personal touch to it, David made sure we had everything we needed and we were able to try local foods, such bakery items and cheese made in the area. Parking was free too and David knew lots of information. Cannot think of anything I didn’t like.
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steven (10/5): David a perfect host. - A great place and wonderful host. Nothing really
- Muree (10/5): All good, excellent stay - Lovely rural location. Nice room, excellent breakfast. Nothing at was all good.
Maybe a TV would be nice.
- Jane (10/5): Exceptional - Greeted with apple pie, coffee, and a very welcoming host. David explained everything we needed to know and the cold beer fridge was a bonus. ( pay beer at end of visit but very reasonable price €2.50 for beer but had wine soft drinks)
Bailey our beagle was made welcome to.
- Catherine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Donna (9/5): Excellent host, breakfast and room. - Comfortable beds, peaceful, good size shower and bathroom. Places to sit outside of your room with drinks available. No TV
- Claire (10/5): Very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was a continental breakfast which included a soft boiled egg, cereals, a pastry, - David is fantastic. He is very welcoming and friendly. The farm is in a very rural area with great parking for motorbikes or cars.
- Isabelle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Curley (10/5): Exceptional - The host David was fantastic and his knowledge of the history of the farm which has a fascinating past. My wife and I was very pleased with the comfort of the bed, so comfortable. The breakfast was very good and a great selection on offer. They are a very honest and lovely family run business. It is obvious that they are totally committed to providing a wonderful and comfortable experience for their guests. Absolutely nothing, it was all brilliant
- Paul (10/5): An excellent well fed stay, especially good for WW1 memorial trips. - The host made us very welcome to our excellent room. He is very good at giving guidance to First world war memorial sites. Paschendale is just down the road. The Menin gate is only 6 miles away. The breakfast was large, excellent and we were encouraged to take any extras away. He supplied cling film to preserve the extras for lunch. A good bikers site with a locked barn available. Nothing.
- Rosalind (10/5): An excellent and helpful host. Perfect location for visiting the area. - Excellent, especially as David was able to supply gluten free products and all the bread was home made. The breakfast offering was first class. Having to come home!
- Robin (10/5): Great stay, the best place we stayed in our 6 day roadtrip - Everything was fantastic. The host was super friendly, we felt like we were his guest, family friend, not just a customer. Breakfast was perfect. Room was the best one we stayed in while visiting Europe. Location to all the historic sites of WW1 is perfect, right in the middle of everything. I am very glad we picked this experience, he has his own collection of artifacts from the war found on his farm or in the area. It was so interesting, and David has a wealth of information to pass on. If we had known this would have been so wonderful, we would have booked more than one night. That we only stayed the one night. The next night we stayed in Ypres to be closer to the Menin Gate. I think looking back we could have been there for 8pm and then still gone back to the farm for the next night.
- Chantel (10/5): Fabulous stay, perfect for a weekend get away. - We loved how friendly David was, he went above and beyond to help us and we would definitely go back to this B&B. The beds were really comfortable, the breakfast was plentiful and we were allowed to make pack lunches to take out for the day. We enjoyed getting to know other guests. We had a wonderful experience. Nothing
- Patricia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Megan (10/5): I had a lovely time in a very relaxing environment. - David was a fabulous host..the huge and delicious breakfasts were served by David with a small commentary from him about the produce..nothing was too difficult for David including giving us Maps of the Ypres Salient or information pertaining to anything we needed.. being able to help ourselves using an honour system for refrigerated beverages(alcoholic or non) was great and the ability to be able to make ourselves tea and coffee anytime was welcome. I also liked the ability to lounge in places other than our room with the placement of lounges in close proximity to our room.Plenty of parking. Nothing!
- Tom.stapleton51 (9/5): Superb -
- Alex (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (10/5): Perfection - It was perfect. The owner David couldn’t do enough for you so helpful Breakfast was fantastic and you could take pack lunch. His knowledge of the 1 st war things was exceptional. Would recommend to anyone
- Eve (10/5): We had a wonderful stay! - David was so helpful and had thought of everything we could need. The rooms were really clean, warm and comfortable. - Virginia (9/5): Superb -
- Andrew (9/5): Excellent, I’ll be booking again. - I booked based on reviews and I wasn’t disappointed, good location for visiting the area, decent sized and clean rooms and an excellent host. A little difficult to find at first but once you’ve worked out a route you’ll be fine.
- Foley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tim (9/5): Excellent base for local touring. V friendly hosts & on-site undercover storage for motorcycles. - Breakfasts were excellent with fresh and homemade selections and encouragement from our host to take extra for lunch / sandwiches. Perfect for motorcycle touring, located in a rural location, very peaceful and only 20 mins ride into Ypres. A very good base; comfortable en-suite rooms and a large courtyard with spacious barn for motorcycles overnight.
- Peter (10/5): Superb! - Superb place to stay!
David, the host, is excellent. Genuinely interested in his guests and ensuring that they have a good time in Belgium. Lovely welcome with tea and cake. Amazing breakfast with lots of homemade goodies and the opportunity to take some food for a packed lunch.
David gave us a history lesson about WW1 and showed us all the things in the barn that have been found on the farmland over the years. A mini-museum right on-site.
The farm is out in the country so lovely and quiet, yet is not far from the cemeteries, museums and Ypres.
David even lent us bikes so we could cycle around the beautiful countryside.
And after a long day, it was great to come back and enjoy a local beer from the honesty fridge. Nothing!
- Catherine (10/5): Great B&B - What an amazing B&B located in quiet country lanes. Our room was spotless, comfortable and well furnished. Our host David was polite and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. A delicious apple cake greeted us on our arrival. He encouraged us to make lunch from the great breakfast provided. Absolutely nothing
- Fja (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect!!!! Alles
- Charlotte (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carolyn (8/5): Warm welcome in rural Belgium - Very nice welcome. It is a working family farm and rural but within five minutes by car to nearest town with buses to Ypres. Nice restaurant there also and supermarket. There is an ‘honesty fridge’ with selection of soft drinks, beers and wines. Breakfasts were marvellous - typical continental with local cheeses and hams, home baked bread, fruit, yogurt and much more. The host had extensive knowledge of the First World War and a small museum of artefacts found on the farm. There were photographs of it after it was destroyed. We also got a map and vouchers to local attractions.

Quiet, comfortable, honesty fridge full of beer and wine very welcome, excellent breakfast with facility to make packed lunch. Welcome apple pie - homemade- and cup of tea on arrival. Nothing - everything was well thought out.
