Guest Reviews
- Karen (9/5): Welcoming stay with a lovely breakfast - Incredible breakfast, and lovely host who made us feel very welcome. Lovely view from our room, and the breakfast too. NA
- Joan (10/5): -
- SJKMUK (10/5): - Absolute gem near the crocodile bridge, perfect for breaking up a journey from Nicoya/Liberia down to the Costa Ballena or Golfo Dulce, or into San José.
Perfectly organised space with lovely home made breads and jams at breakfast with an incredible view.
The room was just gorgeous with beautiful fixtures. Excellent quality.
The host was absolutely charming, very friendly and helpful. We 100 percent recommend and would definitely stay there again. Great find! We found the plunge pool a little cold in the evening, but sure it would have been perfect in the sunshine.
- Lukas (10/5): -
- Alixe et Vincent (10/5): Je recommande +++ - Je recommande ce B&B. Très bon accueil, chambre calme. Piscine agréable. Vue magnifique. Petit déjeuner super... bref une bonne adresse! Nous avons passé un excellent séjour! Merci
Vielen Dank
- Patrik (10/5): - Super nette und tolle Gastgeberin. Frühstück bei sensationeller Aussicht. Brot und Kuchen selbst gemacht. Tiere direkt vor der Haustuere. Sehr ruhig und abgelegen. Mehr Tiere gesehen als im Carara Nationalpark ! Preis Leistung hervorragend. Was will man mehr ? Gar nichts.
Gibt gute Tipps. Hat auch eine Tour für uns gebucht,
Ländliche Lage hat uns gefallen. Unternehmungen nur mit Auto möglich. Nichts
- cecile (9/5): - Le calme Pas assez chaleureux ou authentique
- Miguel (10/5): Gran punto y final a nuestro viaje.
- Giesbrecht (10/5): Wonderful place off the beaten path. - Everything about the place was good. Great view, comfortable room, delicious breakfast!
- Alicia (10/5): - Great location just outside of San Jose area. Close to Tarcoles river and Carara park. Beautiful view from the deck off of the room where we had a small private pool. Scarlet macaws flew by several times which was amazing. The breakfast was excellent and the opportunity to do laundry for us at $15 per load was appreciated. An excellent recommendation for a delicious seafood restaurant only 10 minutes away was wonderful as well. Hosts were friendly and nice to talk to . Great wifi available There is a police check right before the turnoff in the main road which slowed down traffic in the afternoon. The turnoff is not well lit so may be difficult to see if arriving in the dark
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Blodgett (10/5): Great location for enjoying the wildlife of the Pacific lowlands. - Breakfast was phenomenal with home made breads, fruits, eggs, and way more than we could eat. Everything was exactly as we were hoping for and more. The school road "Escuela" is perfect for finding many local native bird species. We heard owls, forest falcons, distant howler monkeys, and macaws from the property. Nice to take a cool dip in the pool also. The location heats up in the afternoon, but if you plan for a siesta in the middle of the day, this is great. Pools are located in the shade of the forest which is nice, but the downside is that leaves fall into the pool constantly, so it scooping up leaves is necessary if you want the pool to stay clean.
- John (9/5): Superb - Large, pool side room. Nicely decorated. Cash only - no credit cards accepted. Steep hill with steps up to breakfast area. Gorgeous view from porch of main house. Nice breakfast. Somewhat remote from restaurants.
- David (10/5): Exceptional - Very welcoming. A great place with beautiful views and a lovely breakfast. Ideal location for the national park.
- Yael (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent breakfast, pool, view AC
- Jill (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): Claudine was a great host and it was great to get to know about her background and how they ended up in Costa Rica - A fabulous view from the breakfast setting. The space be stayed in very clean and very accessible.
- Monica (10/5): Lovely oasis in the jungle with modern comforts. - This is a charming little oasis in the jungle. We had a room with a view and saw toucans and parrots. Thoughtfully appointed space with everything you need and more. The pool area was a wonderful respite at the end of the warm day and breakfast was delicious. We will be back!
- Caroline (9/5): Superb -
- Rakshit (9/5): Superb -
- Robert (10/5): A quiet haven!!! - I loved the view from this quiet and unique home. You can see the jungle, farmland, and the ocean all from your room. We needed a spot to stay for one evening as we traveled late from San Jose to Uvita on the Pacific side. The host is lovely and our favorite restaurant for our entire trip was recommended by her (it is nearby). Their pool and grounds are restful and it is very easy to get to other locations from there. The grounds are well-kept, the neighborhood is safe, and the breakfast is wonderful. Lastly, I have never seen so many butterflies in one place in my entire life. We would absolutely stay again!
- Fabian (9/5): Superb -
- Hugues (10/5): Exceptional - Everything Nothing
- Antony (9/5): peaceful place - wonderful breakfast. very nice and confortable bungalow with view on swimming pool.
- Penny (8/5): A lovely b and b perfect if you have your own transport - The view, the pool, the space It was too isolated for us as we had no car. This was my mistake. However Claudine was extremely kind and helpful arranging trips and transport .
- Teresa (9/5): A comfortable spot with great views - This is a lovely spot. The swimming pool and plunge pool were both very welcome. The room was clean, comfortable and well equipped. It was useful having a fridge, kettle and kitchen sink. The shower was excellent, the best we found during our Costa Rica trip! The river, sea, garden and countryside views were beautiful. Claudine was a friendly and helpful host. The only room for improvement was the air con in the bedroom, which wasn't quite powerful enough.
- Tim (10/5): Of all the excellent places we stayed in Costa Rica, Rancho Capulin was the best. - Set in beautiful grounds with wonderful views from the breakfast area.
Good apartment with (very necessary) air conditioning next to the pool.
Claudine was a helpful host, who booked two great tours for us.
There were several shops, sodas, and restaurants within ten minutes drive.
Exceptional value for money. Rancho Capulin is a mile or so down a dirt track which was bumpy at times, but fine for a normal car.
- Louise (10/5): Beautiful retreat - We had renovated villa in front of a pool. It was beautiful secluded. A lot of birds in the morning wonderful breakfast we loved our stay.
- Kristin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marco (10/5): Feels like paradise - Awesome view from the room, beautiful garden, nice pool, delicious breakfast, nice owners. Feels like paradise! No A/C but the fans are doing the job. We slept really well.
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional - Good room, great view from the balcony/terrace, tasty breakfast, and a friendly hostess.
- Jean-baptiste (9/5): Superb -
- Carles_montmar (4/5): My stay was disappointing as the hotel proved to be overrated due to its poor maintenance and lack o - Location and breakfast. Quiet at night. Inadequate A/C: The air conditioning system in our room was a significant source of discomfort. Regardless of our attempts, it simply did not work properly, and the fan speed could not be adjusted. As a result, the room was consistently too warm, making it challenging for us to sleep or relax comfortably.
Cold Hot Tub: Disappointingly, the so-called "hot tub" was actually cold, not even lukewarm. It was a far cry from what one would expect when looking forward to a relaxing, warm soak.
Loose Faucet in the Kitchen: The faucet in the kitchen was noticeably loose, and it clearly needed tightening. This issue affected the overall functionality and aesthetics of the kitchen area.
Hardened Dish Soap: The dish soap provided in the kitchenette had clearly been sitting there for too long. When bought at the store, it is typically a gel-like substance, but the one in our room had all the water content evaporated, leaving it as hard as a rock. This made it practically unusable.
Dirty Windows in Shower: While the room itself was clean, the cleanliness of the shower area left something to be desired. The windows in the shower were notably dirty, which was off-putting.
Broken Shelf: Another maintenance issue was a broken shelf in the room. It was inconvenient for us to have limited storage space, especially for those with longer stays or more belongings.
No Safe Despite Announcing It: The hotel website and amenities list announced the presence of a safe in the room, but we couldn't find one during our stay. This was a security concern for us.
Construction Noise During Quiet Hours: On a particular night, the hotel's poor planning became evident. They were preparing for a new guest arrival the following day and had to break their own quiet hours rules to finish a construction addition on time. The resulting noise was disruptive and bothersome to the current guests, which was disappointing.
- Eshed (10/5): Amazing place, highly recommended - Rancho Capulin is amazing. The place is beautiful and serene and immaculately clean. The views all around are breathtaking and watching the macaws while having breakfast was the jewel of the crown. This Rancho is conveniently located an hour and a half from the SJO airport which is perfect if you land late or take off early and do not want to spend the night at San Jose
- Annissa (10/5): Exceptional - Everything here was amazing from the view to the breakfast each morning. Nothing.
- David (10/5): Top location, great breakfast, awesome view! - Really nice, well maintained location with stunning view and great breakfast! We will come again!
- Clare (9/5): Most memorable. - The views and grounds are spectacular. The pool very refreshing, and breakfast delicious. Very welcoming. I wish only that we could have stayed longer!
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional - An amazing place to stay with a beautiful pool and gardens/wildlife. Hummingbirds, lizards, bats, scarlet macaws and a constellation of glowworms! A little drive to get dinner, but plenty of info from the host.
- Aiken (8/5): A beautiful place to stay, but v humid so go with a. Room with a/c if you can. - Design of room beautiful, great views from balcony, good breakfast No private parking, humidity with no air con, meaning not the best nights sleep.
- Anonymous (10/5): Fantastic - Claudine super friendly and helpful, very nice location, great pool, amazing breakfast… overall fantastic and I recommend it definitively
- Samantha (7/5): Cute little room - The view from where we were served breakfast (seemingly the owners' home balcony) was beautiful. You can't see it from elsewhere on the property/during the stay though.
The pool was very pretty and the room was a cute little stand alone "tiny house". Aesthetically, this place is fab. Also the owner seemed welcoming and friendly.
Having a fridge/kettle/basic crockery in the room was a great touch and something I'd have definitely appreciated during a longer stay. That I was asked to pay $75 USD at the property when booking.com quoted $66. The exchange rate didn't change on the same day. The rate was the same for 2 people as on my own. With dietary requirements, it seemed the breakfast/rate would be far better value for others who eat eggs/dairy.
The location is out of the way - nowhere to eat/shop/get a coffee without driving realistically and the road is not paved.
The slope to the parking is STEEP. I had a 4wd rental and it struggled to get out, especially when it was a bit wet. This was fine for me but I would have liked to know these things if I had a less capable vehicle or didn't want to have to drive every day.
A better fan/aircon would have made it a more comfortable stay. This was my last night so I'd acclimatised to CR a lot, if it had been my first night (along with bug bites I came home with!) it would have been far more uncomfortable.
Showering with a view of the rainforest was beautiful, but I like a shower that's head height not shoulder/waist high (I'm only 5ft4in).
- Silvia (9/5): What a beautiful place to stay! - The property is gorgeous. The view is amazing.
- Claude (10/5): Exceptional - From the begining to the end, everything was perfect. Bruno and Dominique are excellent host.
It's a pleasure to relax at the swimming pool and to observe the nature.
The room was gorgeous (lot of space) with all the amenities you need. A private terrasse where you could observe the birds and the landscape. The view inside the shower is wonderful!!
The breakfast was excellent: good coffee, bread, fresh fruits and sucullent banana bread... with the extra bonus to be surrounding by the nature.
If we could have extra vacations, we will definitely add another night there.
The location is good, few minutes by car from Tarcoles.
I really recommand this place. Nothing. Except to not be able to stay longer!
- Henrike (7/5): Good - Location Insects
- Alexandre (8/5): Very good - The location is amazing. We were very pleased with our room (the view!!). Our host was really nice and helpful in organizing activities around (special mention to our guide Franklin who was the best!). We were asked to check out early. Since we had an activity planned from 6 to 10 we did it around 6 and thus weren't able to take a shower after trekking 4 hours in the nearby park before giving back the room (check out is supposed to be around 11). Not that big of a deal in the end but still...
NB: payment is cash only which wasn't an issue for us but be aware there's only one ATM nearby and it may or may not work... The 2nd nearest is 20min by car away.
- Prianka (10/5): Exceptional - beautiful location! the garden view room had incredible views of forest, river, and the ocean. we saw so many birds and butterflies from the terrace in the morning. the location is quiet and charming. the room was clean and cozy, with great shades, a clean and roomy bathroom, and soft linens. the breakfast was excellent and the staff very friendly and accommodating. we felt very well cared for.
- Jandle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (10/5): Great breakfast and amazing views from breakfast terrace. - As you first approach Rancho Capulin it looks rather unimposing. However, siting on the breakfast terrace ( eating a delicious breakfast) is a wonderful experience. The view is across the forest, over the river and to the coast in the distance and on the terrace itself there are plenty of birds and butterflies flitting around. We loved having breakfast here, it was one of the best experiences in our trip to Costa Rica.
We stayed in a poolside cabin with a fan and mesh windows and slept very comfortably without air conditioning despite the some noises from the surrounding forested area ( frogs and birds).
The pool area is lovely and peaceful and we had the area to ourselves most of the time.
Claudine , the host was lovely and she made us feel very welcome.
There are some places to eat evening meals a short drive from Rancho Capulin. We spent our days visiting Carara national park which was only about 15 minutes drive away and did a crocodile safari river cruise which was great for bird watching. It Took us about 1 hour 15 minutes to drive from the airport car hire place and the drive was pretty straightforward with good quality roads. Nothing
- Alisa (10/5): a beautiful location- the pool was fabulous and just so relaxing. Bruno was so welcoming and helpful. thank you -
- Lorenza (8/5): Very good -
- Jandle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julian (10/5): Exceptional - Hospitality, friendliness, helpfulness, breakfast, design of room, fantastic views nothing

- Marisa (10/5): Exceptional - A beautiful oasis off the beaten path. We had the lower bungalow for our family of 4. Wildlife, gorgeous grounds and proximity to refreshing pool was a nice addition. Breakfast was delicious with epic views.
- Erika (10/5): Lovely stay, highly recommend! - Beautiful property, clean, quiet rooms, lovely pool we saw a scarlet macaw from, delicious breakfast, knowledgeable and helpful host! Nothing

- Laurence (9/5): Superb - This B&B is in a beautiful environment. Our room had a large balcony with an amazing view all the way to the ocean. We also enjoyed the pool, which was really pleasant.
- Pragashini (10/5): It was a magical stay and wish we had booked more than one night. - The views from this property was spectacular. within minutes of arriving we saw macaws flying from our balcony. The sunset was also beautiful.
The beds and mattresses were very comfortable.
The breakfast was also delicious with a beautiful view.
- Jerome (9/5): nice place to stop to visit Carrara & tarcoles - nice view on rio tarcoles.
great breakfast served by the sympathetic owners.
- Nina (10/5): Exceptional -
- George (10/5): lovely stay. it was very windy while we were there, so not so many birds - but that is Mother Nature - highly recommend. - lovely setting. comfortable bed, great host - came and picked us up from restaurant lovely private pool nothing
- Gabriela (10/5): Exceptional - We had the small house next to the pool with the lounge outside, which was so beautiful. You look at the pool when you wake up. Breakfast is delicious. The only thing I want to say is "excellent" in everything you could possibly wish. We felt like in tropical heaven. -
- Patricia (10/5): Fabulous place and lovely views - This is a beautiful property and we loved the views of the river and oceans. no screen on some windows in my room
- Karolina (10/5): A true gem in the tropical rainforest! - An amazing experience. Beautiful little hotel with stunning views, lots of wildlife, very friendly owner, fantastic breakfast… honestly, we simply loved it there! I cannot think of anything!
- Neeltje (9/5): lovely place in the middel of the nice jungle garden, good pool, good showers, good breakfast! - Lovely family room with two double beds in a separate lodge next to the pool. Good hot shower! Small outside kitchen area and nice lounge settee on our terrace. Small but nice and fresh pool. In the middle of the jungle with beautiful plants and flowers birds and views. A good place to relax in between all the sightseeing and traveling.
The nice breakfast was served on the terrace at the mail house with magnificent views over the valley and the river and ocean. Friendly owner who was very helpful and we could stay at the pool area after we checked out for another hour. definitely recommendable place to stay! nothing
- Ronald (9/5): Superb - Great view and breakfast. Very friendly staff. Location ok for visit to croc river and national Park unfortunately the wifi in my accommodation next to the pool did not work properly
- Nicolas (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent stay at Rancho Capulin. We stayed there further to a change of plan in our vacation, and we were glad we discovered this gem! Amazing place, so beautifully arranged, quiet, excellent breakfast with aras flying in front of us!
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amy (10/5): Amazung property! Wonderful hosts! Amazing breakfast! - Beautiful location with stunning views. Breakfast was amazing. Wish we could have stayed our entire trip in this little bit of paradise!
- James (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing views across the valley, loads of wildlife visible from the balcony, access to pool, comfortable modern rooms and a warm welcome
- Shay (8/5): Very good -
- Kathryn (10/5): Amazing scenery and comfortable rooms - We had a wonderful stay here. The rooms were very comfortable and the views and the wildlife were breathtaking. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The bin in the bathroom could do with being a bit bigger if it’s not emptied every day.
- Sarah (9/5): Nice stay with a beautiful view - We had a nice stay in Rancho Capulin. The host is very friendly and the breakfast was one of the best we had during our entire Costa Rica Journey. The view out of the room and the garden is amazing. There are many animals to watch.
- Sven (10/5): Great B&B with amazing view! - - Lovely owner
- Great breakfast
- Nice pool
- Amazing view
- Nice restaurants nearby
- Lisa (9/5): Superb -
- Shy (9/5): Superb - The view from the breakfast terrace is worth the stay on its own. A beautiful place in a breathtaking location. Charming hosts. You're sleeping on the edge of pure Costarican nature and that is everything but silent. Prepare yourself.
