Guest Reviews
- Gerardo Alonso (8/5): - El trato del personal Las sábanas y alhomadas deben mantenerse más limpias. No se advertía que debíamos llevar jabón y champú para la ducha
- Roberta (8/5): -
- Kerschen (9/5): -
- Susan (5/5): Can't really recommend - Location was perfect for both the ferry and the Bioluminescence tour.
Friendly family Very very basic accommodations. Toiletries from last guest in shower, broken tiles/ old shabby furniture, no hot water, tiles all broken.
The meal we pre ordered was very expensive .
- Dawn (10/5): - Tico living at its Best. This family is so nice and very helpful. The pool was delightful and the food I've never had better in costa rica. I've been traveling many years. Compliments to the cook.
Bioemulescent beach close by. Eddie's Bioemulescent tours. And the beaches are breath taking. Pura vida
- Anna (8/5): - Very good location - close to bioluminescence tours and ferry. The owners run a mini bar-resturant so its possible to have a meal. Like many Costa-Rica properties, there is a musty smell in rooms because of very humid climate.
- Madleen (9/5): -
- Mary (8/5): Great for staff, food, and location. - Delicious food and super friendly staff. A very short walk to evening bioluminescent tour. Rooms could be cleaner.
- Emilia (6/5): - Bardzo mili gospodarze, dostaliśmy też śniadanie na wynos i kawę, to było bardzo dobre. Paskudna łazienka, brudna, brudne ręczniki i pościel. Do tego tylko zimna woda...
- Scott (8/5): Great place to stay if you are Going to Tortuga Island the next day with Bahio Rica tours. - They fixed us a awesome dinner for 10 bucks each. Breakfast was good. Was a good jungle experience. Owner took me to town for Beer and Snacks. (about 15 minutes each way. I did pay him for gas though) Went on the bioluminescent kayak tour about 70 yards from the property. Eddy's Kayak tours. Eddy let us fish from his beach before the tour. Pool was refreshing. Wear tons of bug spray! Noseums got me.
- Jacob (10/5): - The family was amazing and it was right next to our bioluminescent tour. They made us dinner after the tour and breakfast in the morning. Great food!
- Milana (5/5): - The location was really good although I expected to see the beach glowing in the dark and I intentionally booked my stay because of the location and I realized that you can see this phenomenon mostly only with a boat and in a dark enough place, the room was very cozy and the breakfast was really nice and the pool was nice too What's more, the breakfast was quite small, and felt a bit more like a small gourmet meal, and the toilet in my room didn't work either, as I would have expected the accommodation to check about this before
And I was sure the place was close to the ship and I thought I could do it on foot, but it was quite far and the location wasn't really the best value for the price you pay.

- David (9/5): Go there for the food! - This property has a lot to offer. My family of six stayed in two rooms for one night. The best part was the food. We LOVED the authentic Costa Rican meals we were served! We paid for dinner the night we arrived and it was the best meal we had eaten in Costa Rica so far on our vacation. It was reasonably priced and the portions were very generous. The included breakfast the next day was delicious as well. Rosa and Alonzo were very attentive and helpful.
The pool was great for cooling off. We were there with a few other guests and didn't feel crowded. It was very clean and enjoyable. The grounds have fairly large common areas and places for the kids to explore. It was fun to watch the plentiful wildlife and notice the many fruit trees on the grounds.
We were surprised at how basic and rustic the rooms were but the beds were comfortable and we felt safe.
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts were very friendly and accommodating. The food was the best and most delicious homemade cooking, and it was convenient to have the restaurant right on the property. I loved the nature sounds, we could hear and even see monkeys and parrots up in the trees right off our balcony, the overall atmosphere was so tropical and exotic! The nearby bioluminescence kayak tour was a great addition to our stay too. The closest public. beach, Playa Organos, was long and beautiful (just beware there are no free facilities at the beach, there is a bar that charges $2 to use their washroom). Otherwise the beach was very nice, the waves were fun to jump on, there was no crowds and lots of beach space to walk along the water line. Another beach at a nature reserve Curu was about 30 min away driving, but was worth visiting (and paying to get into the park) as you get to see a few families of monkeys all around (just be cautious they'll try to go through your belongings if left unattended in the shade). The location is remote, which was a plus for us, but may be not what others are looking for. Also I felt the stay was overpriced, but I guess you pay premium for direct exposure to the wilderness.
- Davide (9/5): Great place - You feel part of the nature
- Gergő (4/5): Disappointing -
- Shelley (9/5): Superb - Lovely family atmosphere, relaxed and welcoming
- Jennifer (9/5): Superb - Host was so welcoming, friendly and thoughtful. He kept the kitchen open until I'd returned from a night time kayak trip, to ensure I had dinner.
Location was superb and a lovely cosy ambience in the communal areas. Would definitely recommend Only downside was the mattress was a little uncomfortable, and the room could have benefitted from a bedside lamp. Other than that, a really superb place to stay in Paquera
- Afsana (8/5): Great spot to do the bioluminescence tour! - Great breakfast, friendly staff, great family atmosphere, good dinner.
- Antonio (2/5): Great location and structure, but needs a lot of remodeling - The location is close to the Paquera dock, and the facility is very nice as the cabins are immersed in a great vegetation. The breakfast was very good. The cabins are old and badly cleaned. The bathrooms were not clean, a lot of what it looked like to be termites on the flat surfaces. We felt very uncomfortable sleeping.
- Joanne (10/5): Familia Manito Amazing Experience!! - Authentic experience, amazing family ran business, beautiful gardens, fruit trees, howler and capuchin monkies in the area. Full Breakfast was included other meals excellent at a very reasonable price. Not fancy but very comfortable, was a highlight of our Costa Rica travels. Excellent value for money. Highly recommend!!
- Marianna (8/5): Quiet stay with friendly family - Really friendly family, great dinner , quiet location with nice gardens. All good !
- Ana (8/5): Great location for bioluminescent beach - It is a great location for the tour of the bioluminescent beach as you can walk for the tour. We have a small child so we couldn't go kayaking but Alonso found us a tour with a friend on a boat that was very good, just for us.We could even stop and go in the water and experience it closer. Highly recommend.
The accommodation was simple and a little outdated but it was ok for the night. The breakfast and dinner were tasty.
The swimming pool was very good and with that heat was highly appreciated. The bathroom was very in need of renovations making it hard to be on a good cleaning standard. There were dogs barking a good part of the night and as there are no glass in the winds, I would advise ear plugs if you want to sleep better than we did. But the experience of bioluminescence beats it all.
- Myrna (8/5): A rustic apartment in a quiet, green setting with lovely hosts and amazing fresh food from their own trees.! - The property itself had lots of fruit trees and birds with a small pool to cool off in. There was a large covered outdoor communal area with hammocks and comfortable places to sit. Our actual rooms/ equipment were a bit dated
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - Alonzo and his mom cooked wonderful meals for us and we really enjoyed the pool and ambience of the place, complete with Howler monkeys and birds surrounding the garden. A very convenient location right next to Bahia Rica boat tours and Eddy's Bioluminescence tours.
- Amalie (8/5): Very good -
- Bianca (7/5): Good - The place is very close to the ferry and since we had to take the ferry early in the morning it was the perfect location for us. The place is nice and clean. The owners are very kind and breakfast is very good. I will probably come back next year because of the above reasons. The shower was not hot enough but thankfully was very hot outside
- Karina (9/5): Very welcoming family and very helpfull in guiding us on our journey onwards. - The breakfast was very nice and homemade exactly at the time we agreed. Very delicious and of local cuisine.
Very close to Paquera and ver helpful family that helped us on our journey onwards as I didn't know how to get to our next stop. They knew exactly what to do. I will and have already recommended this place to other people. Maybe share could have been a reading lamp in the room. There was only a lamp in the ceiling.
- Julia (10/5): Lovely family environment - Thea family were really sweet and looked after us a lot while we were there. It was mother's day during our stay (apparently a national holiday!) And they were quite inviting for us to oin them. They still cooked for us, despite celebrating. Located right next to bioluminescent algae beach which was very accessible. It was quite isolated, plan qccordingly
- Alessandro (1/5): TERRIBLE RECEPTION, ABSOLUTELY TO AVOID - Let me tell you about my experience.
I booked on booking in this hostel, showed up at the front desk with the confirmation on the email.
The man in the kitchen tells me that it is impossible because the cabinas is full. I show him the email received, then he goes to check: the room is there, but he said it was not cleaned.
I tell him that I am willing to clean it too, my trip was long and the hostel is in an impassable isolated area.
His response was shocking: "It costs me more to call someone to clean it than to give you the room."
When I said to him that I already booked an excursion with a person that I have meet before, he also was more rude, said that I could go away,
Leaving me in the middle of nowhere despite having made the reservation from booking !
I quoted exactly the words of this person, he should just learn hospitality and coming to meet a customer, moreover in difficult !
I went towards the center and found several cabinas with great people who welcomed me like family, don't waste your experience in Costa Rica in places like this !
- Maria (9/5): Perfect place to stay for Isla Tortuga, Curu, and bioluminescence - My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights as a part of our trip to Costa Rica. The location is awesome - it takes a ferry from Puntarenas and a short walk to get there, and there are several places basically next door offering bioluminescence and Isla Tortuga tours. Even though it's a bit on the expensive side by Costa-rican standards, it's one of the better deal in the area. The unit was clean, the beds were comfy, there were two fans, and the breakfast was good. The host also offered us dinner for an extra price, which was very convenient. Although neither of us speaks Spanish, the communication with the host was uncomplicated. WiFi was not really fast and was not working on one evening, however, our own Claro internet had connection problems in the general area. So, don't expect stable internet connection here.
- Ellysia (7/5): Homey enviorment - The pool was nice. The location was nice, it's right next to the kayaking place. The plants and the decorations were nice they also had good ice cream. There isn't air conditioning. If you're traveling alone they aren't like your typical hostel. They have rooms for 4 people. I went by myself and I only needed a twin size bed but I had to get a room with two queen sized beds because that's all they had.
- Rachel (10/5): Incredible, very much recommend. Excellent place to stay if you’ve booked the bioluminescence tour - Food was incredible, lovely warm family. Nice chill area with hammocks, books and games. A really warm atmosphere Bathroom could’ve been cleaner, also no aircon so we were a little warm
- Gusten (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lisa (10/5): Everything we needed - great! - The food was delicious - we had breakfast and dinner, cooked by the family and loved everything about it. It was one of the best meals we had in Costa Rica!
The family was friendly and welcoming, even helped us going back to the ferry. And it was near the tour ( Bahia Rica) we booked - perfect for 2 nights. Nothing, it was perfect for us.
- Charlie (1/5): HORRIBLE - NO HOT WATER!!! - NOTHING! NO HOT WATER!!! Do your self a favor and don't book this hotel. They can not provide the minimal necessity of "hot water" and claim that we really did not need it as its a tropical place. What a joke. I have nothing good to say about this place except Miss Rosa, (an older lady) the mother of the owner that knew how her son was treating us and tried to make it easier. How sad.
The plastic bin you see in the photo is the water they brought us and the cup where we can wash ourselves.. yikes..
- Eef (8/5): Nice basic place with lovely pool and very very kind family - Amazing family that run this place. The dishes are delicious and they have a wonderfull pool. If you’re looking for a basic place to stay with a swimming pool close to a bioluminescence tour then this is the place to be. Alonso even picked me up for a small fee from the ferry. So even if you didn't rent a car, you can still come here! Be aware that there are no windows from glass. The windows are made from mosquito nets. I didn't bother it. No need to put an alarm. You will be woken up by the bird and monkey sounds :)
- Anna-sophie (9/5): Lovely home stay, close to bioluminescence tour - Very friendly stuff, nice dinner and comfortable and spacious room Breakfast, that was includes, was a bit small
- Laura (8/5): Wonderful family, comfortable stay for the night - The best part of the stay was Hugo and Rosa, the owners. They were warm, friendly and lovely to work with. They made a great dinner and breakfast for us that was just what we needed. The location is near-ish the ferry, but would recommend a car or taxi to get there. We stored our car on their property which was helpful. No hot water in the shower, but it’s warm enough it wasn’t too bad. The facilities were fine and served us well, but it wasn’t anything too fancy!
- Michelle (10/5): lovely home atmosphere to stay for a night - Amazing host and family (staff). it felt like we stayed with family. we had a delicious dinner and breakfast there. beautiful grounds and nice room with fridge. close to Bahairica Bioluminescence Tour. NA.
- Emily (2/5): A disappointing mark on our 2 week holiday - The location which is why we booked in first place - close to Bahia Rica bioluminescence kayak tours. The hotel owner when he did arrive was friendly and helpful, but unfortunately by that point we had lost hope. Breakfast was very tasty. We were very disappointed with our stay here. We had issues checking in despite informing of our arrival time and we spent up to an hour resolving this. Nobody appeared on site upon arrival, gates locked. There was no hotel sign on the gate as per previous review photos, so we initially thought it was no longer a hotel and were worried we’d booked a scam hotel. I called two numbers associated with the property on Google and booking.com. First number the person that answered said they no longer work there. Second number was more helpful and said they would call someone. At this point we were thinking we wouldn’t have a bed for the night after doing a night time kayak tour down the road, and were thinking we’d need to sleep in the car or drive down the steep, bumpy gravel dirt access road at night to go elsewhere due to very limited hotels in area. 10/15 minutes after we spoke to the 2nd person on the phone, a resident at the property came to the gate to speak to us. Unfortunately we speak limited Spanish and they English, so we didn’t understand what was being said. They called someone who spoke to us in English to say the owner was in town and would be about 20 minutes. The woman who’d come to the gate invited us inside and showed us a room. The room was very basic - more so than I expected from previous photos and reviews. The bathroom was not clean. There is only cold water and the shower set up was precarious - a hosed water pipe from outside essentially attached to a shower head and tied with wire to the ceiling. No windows - just mosquito nets stapled over openings and the nets had holes in places. These openings also just have voile nets not full curtains, so at night, the room felt very overlooked from outside and you could also see all lights in the surrounding properties which made it hard to sleep. It was a very loud night - you could hear everyone talking/coughing nearby, every movement, so we struggled to sleep much.
- Belinda (9/5): Pura vida - Food was amazing
Dogs were friendly
Alfonso and family are great hosts
Room 3 has everything that you need but not luxurious, no hot water but if you expect that then not a problem.
Great being in the jungle with howler monkeys and birds around.
Perfect for bioluminescence tours - with Eddie.
Pura vida Nothing it was a great few days.
- Michael (9/5): Incredible value with amazing meals and cute rooms. - Amazing value! Wonderful rooms, cute common area with hammocks. The best part was the food - so delicious and homemade. It was a great home base for day trips in the area.
