Guest Reviews
- Mahathi (10/5): - Beautiful room, quite comfortable, looking forward to visiting again
- Susanne (8/5): - Gute Lage. Schöne Einrichtung. Einzelne Steckdosen fallen fast aus der Wand.
- Robert (3/5): Uncomfortable - Location Whilst some may like the layout it was not to our taste and uncomfortable. The front room is glazed and open to the street which is like being in a goldfish bowl
- Lemuel (10/5): Amazing, a wonderful place to be in Ghent. - It was like staying in an art gallery with curated paintings and beautiful decorations. Erik was so helpful with checking in and helped us with our luggage when we left. The location fronts a canal and is 5 minutes away from the historic center of town. His recommendation to go to Yuzu, the chocolatier was great and we enjoyed the food at the 2 restaurants on the same block. He was full of interesting information about Ghent and is an historian. Everything was great.
- Iris (10/5): Heerlijke overnachting in de leuke stad Gent gehad. Wij komen zeker nog eens terug! - Verrassende locatie. Super leuk entree en mooie slaapkamer. Wij waren verrast!
- Mariano (10/5): - An exceptional stay in the heart of Ghent.
Erik was an outstanding host — attentive, professional, kind and genuinely welcoming from the very beginning. His hospitality made the entire experience feel effortless and personal at the same time.
The property itself is truly remarkable: distinctive, full of character, and far from the standard hotel experience. It offers a unique atmosphere that perfectly reflects the charm and authenticity of Ghent.
Its location is simply ideal — right in the city center, just steps away from the city’s main landmarks, restaurants, bars, and cultural highlights. The neighborhood is vibrant, lively, and full of energy, offering the perfect balance between local authenticity and a dynamic social scene.
For anyone looking for more than just a place to stay — but rather a memorable experience immersed in the true spirit of Ghent — this is an outstanding choice. Highly recommended, and without hesitation, a place I would return to.
- Whitney (10/5): Beautiful waterfront property with a fun, lively cafe right next door. - The location is wonderful and the property feels very luxurious! Erik is a prompt, friendly host. Everything you could possibly need is a short walk away. The mattress could be more comfortable but it was fine.
- Stephen (6/5): Okay - Quirky and a good location For the price and considering it is advertised as a honeymoon suite , it was a let down . If I had booked it for my honeymoon I would now be single
- Víctor (10/5): 100/10 stay – exceptional host and perfect location - We had an amazing experience in Ghent, and this accommodation was a big part of it. The location is unbeatable, right in the center, and the room was spotless, comfortable, and beautifully prepared.
Erik was an outstanding host — always helpful, responsive, and genuinely kind. He made everything easy for us, from clear instructions to being flexible with our schedule, which we really appreciated.
Everything was smooth from start to finish, and we truly felt welcome during our stay.
If we come back to Ghent (which we definitely want to), we wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again. Highly recommended!

- J.M.E. (9/5): Heerlijk verblijf midden in Gent! - De lokatie is fantastisch.
- Ted (10/5): Great accomodation - Amazing room and kindly people
- Shkoda (10/5): Best experience! - Amazing location, little garden, quietness and the hammam! Super vibe and kind welcome from the owner. We really felt like valued friends. Will definitely come again and stay at Schopenhauer again.
- Philip (9/5): -
- Lukas (5/5): For that price, you can get an actual hotel and more comfort. Not terrible, but I was disappointed. - Nice view into the garden, though looks a bit sad in winter. Quiet location. Friendly staff. No clear instructions how to use Hammam, was not able to use it at all during the stay. Musty smell in the room, and also the shower smells off. Barely any usable electrical outlets next to the bed, and no really usable night stands. Wifi did not work, no stable connection at all. Lots of dust and dirt in the "heater hole" in the floor (I do not expect the cleaning lady to take care of that though, that seems a nightmare to get to). The entrance looks a bit shady, thought I was booking a hotel but it was just another AirBnB-situation where you grab your own key from a hole in the wall. The corridor towards the room is also not very clean (check underneath the bathroom boiler, it looks like it's been dripping on the floor for a year or two. No, this was not in a private utility room as the nice man is saying in his respone below, it's in the hallway to the bathroom, right next to the bathroom, in plain view) and difficult to squeeze through because art is just leaning on the wall
Lastly, please stop buying starbucks coffee pods, especially not the onest with roast level 8. I am not a snob about coffee, but that tasted awful and just burned.
Just also saw that the owner writes really arrogant responses to negative reviews, where he complains that people just don't "get" the concept and that they're stupid. I don't know man, that seems pretty rude. You entered into a transaction with us, we have the right to complain if we feel we didn't get what we paid for. Maybe take it less personally?
But I guess I'm getting one of those replies, too. Should have read those before booking, that one is on me...
Prachtige suite.
- Maria Cristina (9/5): Good stay - Location It's suitable for couples
- kris (8/5): -
- Stuart (9/5): - Quirky little lovely place like being in an art gallery. Comfy bed and the deep sunken bath was a nice touch. Good location
- Frank (9/5): A most interesting property - Really interesting place and right beside the centre if the city I least liked the bed which was built into the floor. Once I figured out the best technique for getting in and out of it, all was fine.
Wij komen zeker terug. Aanrader dus.
Gracias mil. Lo recomendarnos ampliamente y sin reservas Nada.
- Jeroen (9/5): Very romantic setting - Great location, spacious room, romantic and unique design
- Tsjerk (10/5): Top! - Super locatie!
Wij waren tevreden. Niks
- Ridderhof (10/5): Heerlijk verblijf, voelde als thuis! - Heerlijke bedden, alles smaakvol ingericht. Mooie kunst en boeken, ideale locatie. -
- Diederik (10/5): Top - Een fantastische appartement in de stad.
- Xurxo (10/5): The room was great and the location is impossible to be better. It’s a bit dificult to find out the door in the street, -
- Domenico (10/5): -

- Simon (10/5): Very calming place if you visit Gent - Eric is one of the best hosts you could ever dream to have! Even tho, there was a slight inconfort for us in the beginning, Eric insisted to make it right for us, it was wonderful!
Seriously, this has been so relaxing for us, it took me one week to come back from this trip and write this review.
The place is also right in the center, next to the canal, you'll be in the right place to visit the city!
For sure, if we come back to Gent, we'll stay with him.
Thank for everything! We look forward to our Antwerp at your other place! Nothing much, Eric made it right arranging another room for us with the initial incomfort we had in the first room at the base floor.
Thank you again for doing this!
- Melis (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sepehr (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nohad (8/5): Very good -
- Alex (9/5): An adorable and homey place that I feel is worth it. If I return to Ghent I know where to stay. - A sweet suite tastefully decorated with home furnishings, books and artwork. It felt like being home. Maybe not my home, but it felt more welcoming than virtually any commercial hotel room I've stayed in. The owner, Eric, dropped by to check if everything was alright and to offer breakfast. A kind man, and very helpful with info about the city.
The self check-in process went seamlessly. Pre arrival texts offering access codes, transport info and exact directions to find the place (which isn't marked on the outside) were spot-on. Rooms (there are 2, it is a true suite) were generous sized and felt Street was busy during the day, the front room of the suite is visible to the public which gives you that "living in a fishbowl" feeling. There are drapes and grills to cover the windows, but then it blocks the canal view. A gauzy curtain or mesh screen might serve for better privacy.
There is no shower, but a large sunken tub with a shower head on a hose. I didn't try either as I was only staying one night. The tub lacked splash curtain and I didn't see an overhead holder for the shower head so it seemed like it would be awkward to take a shower.
Take note there is a restaurant right next door. Normally it is listed as closing around 21:00 but the night I stayed they were open til 01:00 for some reason. Eric informed me the next day that is very unusual. Despite this the room was surprisingly quiet. The only bothersome part was occasional whiffs of cigarette smoke, but even that was infrequent and I didn't feel like I was being gassed out. (I have a sensitive sense of smell.)
These negatives are IMHO really small compared to the quality and ambience the room offers. Would not deter me from renting again if I return to Ghent.
- Salva (9/5): Particular but suprisingly comfortable room in central Gent -
- Youssef (10/5): Exceptional - everything was excellent nothing
- Sara (10/5): Exceptional - Comfy room and bed.
Lovely bathroom.
Water and tea and coffee making facilities in the room.
Fabulous breakfast.
The location was spot on.
- Orion (10/5): An unforgettable and amazing experience - We really had a wonderful stay! The owner was very nice and quick to answer our questions when we had some. The location could hardly be more central, only a few minutes by walk to the Korenmarkt. The living room is amazingly decorated and the whole place filled with all kinds of interesting books about painting, history etc. The room was incredible, with the most comfortable bed you'll ever see, and a bath behind thin curtains to relax in the light of candles...we definitely recommend it! Nothing, all was perfect!
- Baris (10/5): Exceptional -
- Martin (10/5): Gem in Ghent - Absolutely brilliant...perfect location and the staff were exceptional...breakfast was awesome..
- Michail (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ahmed (1/5): Bad - Location only It was terrible, unfortunately. I paid 224€ for two nights. I slept one night and left. I didn’t sleep the second night. It was dirty, old, and had a terrible design. There were a lot of random items and colors. Everything was very bad. I do not recommend it.
- Jean-luc (9/5): Superb -
- Patrick (9/5): Peaceful bubble in the heart of Ghent - Amazing Welcome. Easy and very friendly. Plus the place is so peaceful (room at the ground floor) with a steam facility and a nice backyard. Thank you. none
- Alice (10/5): Unique, relaxing and well located!! - B&B Schopenhauer is centrally located next to some great restaurants, bars and cultural locations. It's a perfect place to stay during a holiday in Ghent. Schopenhauer is both comfortable and unique, it's a really special place to stay. The hammam was top notch. We also felt very welcome. We met Eric briefly and he was really lovely. His recommendations were great. We will definitely stay again if we visit Ghent in the future.
- Greg (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matteo (10/5): Exceptional - We loved the location, the house style, the bathtub, the host. We enjoyed everything!
- Gary (9/5): Had a really nice weekend in Ghent. - Great location to access the centre, canals, trams, bars and restaurants. Very busy bar next door, very small wc,I prefer to have a stand up shower but had to sit in the bath to shower. The bed was a novelty but was difficult to get up from.
- Mike (5/5): Good location but we would prefer a more standard room with a standard bed. - Good location alongside the river. Clear instructions on how to park, find the place and enter. It's clear the host tries hard to please with this property. This room wasn't for us. It was listed as a honeymoon suite, and we took it only because of the location. The bed is sunk into the floor which makes getting out of it or making it up awkward. There is no shower, only a bathtub, which is large and comfortable but the absence of a shower without a curtain is problematic.
- Mandy (9/5): Great stay in a unique accommodation near the very centre of the city. - We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 nights at Schopenhauer, split between two very different suites. Both suites were spacious, comfortable and fun! There were books and pieces of art in both suites which made our stay interesting and enjoyable. Each suite had particular features - the sunken bed in the first one was very comfortable and the shower and outdoor space in the second one was great. In all the accommodation was great and added much to our visit to Ghent.
The location of Schopenhauer was really good for exploring the city. A very few minutes walk took you to the heart of the city - the castle, the bell tower and cathedral.
- Daniel (10/5): Best anfitrion possible - Eric is the best
- Adrian (10/5): Just fabulous - Very peaceful, great interior design, good location on the canal and close to the historic centre. Some very nice cafes nearby (Alice and Jaqueline). It was perfect
- Mateusz (10/5): Nice and quiet - Location, great bath and quite place. We liked the design of the flat It’s not possible to open the window
- Garry (9/5): Superb -
- Olgam (8/5): Very good - The room is very spacious and in a great location.
There is a shared corridor that leads to the bathroom, but we didn't hear anyone else around while we were there. The view from the room is lovely and the self check in process very easy. Cleanliness could be improved. We moved the tray on the coffee table and there was a condom wrapper under it. You could tell thay tray hasn't been moved in ages and not nice to find that in the room.
- Sean (8/5): Very good -
- Angela (8/5): Great stay, enjoyed watching people pass by next to the canal as we drank coffee at the beautiful long wooden table. - It was quirky - lots of interesting books, artwork and furniture. Lots of space and in a fantastic location. It was easy to find and access the property. The landlord was very amenable. Toilet’s small and not very private. It’s quite hard to get out of bed ( being built into the floor) but we knew that when we booked. It’s a little tatty in places: wallpaper peeling above the bed, shutters not working.
- Carlos (10/5): Great place to rest - The owners were super nice and available. The hammam was great! The view of the garden from bed is very relaxing
- Tim (9/5): Superb -
- João (7/5): Good -
- Jolanta (10/5): Exceptional - This room is amazing! The view through the window is so calming. Really atmospheric place.
- Fiona (10/5): A very relaxing and peaceful time was spent in a wonderful accommodation thank you - Friendly staff and the bathroom The smell in the bedroom was quite strong around 11 not sure where is was coming from
- Laurence (3/5): Dominated by Dust. - The location was good, with easy access to trams and to the city centre. Very good wine shop about 50m away. Gent is a beautiful city, and well worth a visit. The room was a disappointment.
1. Very dusty. Indeed grubby really.
2. Canal/City view impossible as the main room was a converted shop front with books and other things displayed in the window, and to preserve any privacy the curtains had to be kept drawn.
3. Bath in the bedroom. Weird. Most definitely not a "private bathroom" as advertised. This is seriously misleading as the impression given is that there is a separate room. The toilet was in a corner with a door that could be closed, but was very cramped.
4. The wash hand basin's mirror was situated so you could only see the top of your head and with a bizarre tap arrangement. I am 1.67m high.
5. The decor was such that we thought we had strayed into a bordello. That would have been funny if other things had been OK.
6. The impression given is that this place has seen better days. There was a neglected reception desk in the entrance with a trademark thick layer of dust on it.
As it's described as a "honeymoon suite", it might be a good idea to leave some business cards for matrimonial lawyers in the room.
- Jane (9/5): Fantastic - Really quiet even though on a busy street. Great shower and the room was lovely That the corridor to the bathroom isn’t totally private
- Mary (9/5): After several days in other cities in tiny rooms for the same $, it was so nice to have a big room with a nice atrium. - Big Bathroom down the hall. But slippers and robes provided.
- Lisa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Quentin (10/5): Best stay in Ghent! - We booked the red suite and everything was perfect! The red mood is so cosy and well decorated. The bed is comfortable. Ideal for a lovely weekend as a couple.
- Tchong (10/5): Wonderful room(s) in a gorgeous setting. Attention to detail is amazing. Best buy - By far the best way to explore Ghent.
- Peter (10/5): Marvelous & romantic place to stay in Gent - We liked absolutely everything. There's not much to add to the accolades other guests already wrote. The location is absolutely superb in the "centre of everything", the host was very communicative, supportive and kind, the room is fabulously romantic and designed exactly as a honeymoon suite for couples interested in culture, history and arts. There's nothing else to add except for 10/10. We will happily return.
- Jan (9/5): Superb -
- Scott (9/5): Beautiful apartment in the heart of Ghent - Great location, spacious and comfortable. The apartment is decorated very tastefully! The host is extremely helpful too The sunken bed and bath is not ideal to get in and out of if someone is old or has mobility issues. The bed is comfortable once you are in it.
- Viktória (9/5): Easy to find, cozy, lovely place. - It’s a very nice place for couples!
- Juliet (6/5): unusualrelaxing and quiet - I loved the initial feeling the room gave, as it had a relaxing atmosphere. It was large and with a lovely view into its own inner courtyard. The owner was very nice. The breakfast I had on one morning was a feast, and all just freshly prepared. It was a quiet place inside, and did have an ambience I liked, and was also very well located for walking into the city. The smell from the drainage was very apparent and unfortunate across the courtyard to the bathroom which came into the bedroom also. There was a constant bad damp smell in the air of the shower/ hammam , which was not pleasant and the towels were damp and smelled before I had even used them. The room was evidently not well cleaned anywhere. This was not because I had arrived a little early, so hoovering under the table was not finished - but because it just hadn’t been well done for some time. Such a big shame, as the idea of the place is so nice.
- Jill (10/5): Will definitely return - In the old quarter of Ghent, on a cobbled canalside street filled with cool bars and an art shop and a bookshop - Schopenhauer is an amazing gallery space which becomes all your own to step inside and relax with books and paintings and a huge sunken bed and a sunken bath. The hospitality is exceptional and definitely book the breakfast!
