Guest Reviews
- Elvira (10/5): Excellent overall and look forward to returning! - From the moment I arrived… I felt the positive energy and tranquility! Mark and staff are super welcoming and attentive. Top notch hospitality and vibes! The room was beautiful and relaxing space. The views are breathtaking and a great way to start and end your day! The breakfast was delicious and perfect to compliment the views and staff. That I had to leave.
- Richard (10/5): Great place. Amazing view of the ocean. Friendly staff. Good breakfast. Highly recommend for sure. -

- Rebecca (10/5): Lovely quiet boutique hotel - We loved our stay at Pura Vista. The breakfast was delicious and the view of the bay is stunning. The room was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed the pool. In 10 minutes you can walk to Ocotal Beach. Mark is a wonderful host. Nothing!
- Anthony (9/5): -
- B (9/5): Nice place - Best view. Quiet location, close to the beach. Manager is friendly and accommodating. The rooms on the first floor are bit dark.
- Steve (8/5): Very nice small private property. Fantastic views of Ocotal bay and Pacific. Hills to beach but we knew that prior to bo - Great view, nice pool. Host very friendly. Nothing

Rien

- Morrison (10/5): Absolutely amazing and will definitely be returning - The host was very gracious. The view was absolutely stunning, and the rules were well appointed. There was nothing I did not like about this property
- Young (9/5): - view and breakfast.
- Terry (10/5): - Excellent location, awesome view, great staff
- Rebecka (10/5): Exceptional - Great, smaller property with nice accommodations. Host was friendly and breakfast was a bonus. We would easily stay again and recommend this place to others.
- Jingqiu (10/5): Hotel service and view. - When we arrived at Pura Vista hotel, we were so impressed by the view and surroundings. The view from our room is stunning. We enjoyed the pool the next day as private because only the two of us were there. The room is big and super clean. The bed is very comfortable. Every detail in the hotel has been carefully designed. The breakfast was delicious. They include a main dish that you can order and a variety of fresh fruits. Fresh brewed coffee and juice served. The owner Mark is very friendly and such a nice person to answer all the questions about trips around Costa Rica for the first time visit like us. We forgot the iPad in the hotel on the first day, and on the last day when we were back to the Liberia international airport, Mark drove to the airport and returned it to us. Thanks Mark for your service and cozy hotel. We are so appreciate it! None.
- Dennis (10/5): Great way to end a perfect vacation, honestly wish we had more time to do the sunset cruise. - Amazing views, friendly staff. The beach was close, but due to the hills we drove. Great time at the local beach restaurant. Breakfast was fresh and delicious.
- Robert (10/5): Beyond our expectations - Wonderful view
Welcoming and helpful host

- Jaywalker (10/5): We loved our stay here. Very good value. - We stayed in unit #6, which is one of the upper level (two levels) rooms. Our balcony overlooked the pool and the distant view of the Pacific Ocean. Upon arrival we were met by Mark, the owner. He's a really laid-back friendly guy. The room was very clean and comfortable. After our first night, I mentioned to Mark that our air conditioning unit was noisy and rather inefficient. He apologized and had an all new a.c. unit installed the NEXT DAY! That's the kind of customer concern you don't see very often when traveling. We were very impressed. The daily room cleaning service is wonderfully thorough. The breakfast is made to order and very good... eggs, fresh fruit, beans/rice, juice, breads, etc. We enjoyed the pool very much. Because there are only 6 units in the complex, the pool is rarely in use, and we were usually the only ones in it. The location of the inn is great, very quiet, but it's best to have a car, as it is located up a long winding hill from local towns and beaches. For the price, this place is an excellent value.
The nearby small towns have some good restaurants and the beaches are very nice and swimmable... no big waves. We really enjoyed the area.
- Frances (9/5): Stunning location. very clean friendly staff - Beautiful! Loved Pura Vista Hotel!
- Clive (10/5): Great place would stay again. - Very quiet and peaceful. Relaxed host - Mark was always very helpful with suggestions and advice when needed. It felt like being at home - away!
Great location just up from the beach, where there is a good restaurant to eat at. We ate there most nights.
Little fridge in the room for drinks.
Fantastic view and generally comfortable. Air con was a bit noisy but didn’t really bother us.
- Steven (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michele (8/5): The view is everything! - The view is everything! We loved to sit out in front of our room and look at the view. There was excellent bird watching as well. Mark was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were a little small but I would still recommend staying here.
- Søren (1/5): A disaster from start to finish - The view was nice Our stay at this hotel was an absolute disaster, and I would strongly advise anyone considering it to look elsewhere. Every single part of our experience was riddled with issues, from arrival to departure.
We had informed the hotel in advance that we would be arriving at 6:00 PM. When we got there, the place was completely deserted. No staff, no instructions, nothing. We had to make an expensive 10-minute international call to the US just to get someone to open the gate. This was an incredibly frustrating and unprofessional start.
Once inside, things didn’t get any better. We had booked a room away from the pool with a king bed. Instead, we were given a room directly in front of the pool with two queen beds. This was not what we had requested, but with no staff around, we had no way of addressing the issue. To make matters worse, our room was infested with ants.
After heading out for dinner, we returned to find that the gate code we had been given did not work. With no staff around to assist us and no response from the hotel, we were left with no choice but to climb the wall to get inside. The hotel finally responded to our message—three hours later—long after we had already let ourselves in.
As for the staff, we can’t say anything about them—because we never met a single person before we left. The complete lack of presence or assistance was shocking.
Overall, this was one of the worst hotel experiences we’ve ever had. Poor communication, zero customer service, an ant-infested room, and a complete disregard for guest concerns. Stay far, far away from this place.
- Mike (8/5): Very good - Mark, the owner on site was very helpful he was very accommodating if we had any issues, has a great local, family run feeling
- Rory (10/5): Great place to relax and enjoy views and weather. - Great place to relax, view is second to none. The owner Mark is very personable and accommodating. Bed and pillows were perfect for me. Security great didn’t worry about our stuff. All good
- Juan (10/5): Exceptional - It has a wonderful view and the facilities were very comfortable. Mark is a friendly, accessible and amazing host. He also has wonderful recommendations.
- Devorah (9/5): Beautiful hotel! Would return in a heartbeat. - We had an amazing 3 nights at Pura Vista. The owner Mark has curated a beautiful and peaceful space. The view is gorgeous (even better in person), the location is fantastic, comfortable and hugeee bed, great water pressure in the shower, and the room has everything you need. Daily breakfast was a plus too, a simple yet delicious typical Tico breakfast, made with love and care. Mark was really friendly and helpful and even kindly allowed us a late check out. A huge bonus was the hotel cats lounging around! Very friendly and sweet. We loved our stay and will definitely return if we’re ever in CR again. The toilet didn’t really love flushing super well, we’d often have to give it a few minutes and then come back and flush again. Not the end of the world and did not detract from our trip at all. Pura vida.
- Vanessa (10/5): Perfect stay for adults. - It was beautiful. Everything: the view, the hosts, the whole area.
- Leslie (10/5): An excellent last night in Costa Rica. - The hosts were especially welcoming. We were allowed to check in early and also permitted to check out half an hour late. The rooms are cozy and the view from the room of the ocean is wonderful. A delicious breakfast was included. We would definitely stay here again.
- Karen (10/5): I was sad to keave such a lovely place with lovely people - The views! Comfortable beds. The pool Internet not good
- Mary (6/5): Although we enjoyed our stay at the Pura Vista with the higher room rates now being charged we would not rebook a room a - The view from the property of Playa Ocotal was amazing! The beach was a 15 minute walk with some decent snorkeling on the left side of the beach by the rocks. The infinity pool was very refreshing with incredible views of the ocean. The beds were comfortable and the shower was very nice. We enjoyed our breakfasts every morning prepared by Lili and eating at Father Rooster’s on the beach (1 of 2 restaurants within walking distance of the hotel). There was minimal service provided by the owners during our stay. The hotel was run more like an air bnb than a boutique hotel (service was provided only on request). The refrigerator in the dining room was not plugged in and a small ice machine was provided a few days at the end of our stay. The showers did not drain (the water level was at the point of almost overflowing onto the bathroom floor). If you want a variety of restaurants to eat at you need to have a car or hire an Uber/taxi. We were not provided a detailed invoice when requested and all communication regarding checkout and payment was through WhatsApp.
- Susie (8/5): Beautiful villa overlooking the bay - but not quite as expected .... - The bed & breakfast is in an elevated position overlooking Playa Ocotal and enjoys spectacular views from the terrace. Great pool with loungers and comfortable bedrooms - quality bedding with each having a private outdoor area and patio furniture. Owners are warm & welcoming and very responsive to emails/WhatsApp messages. There is secure parking on site. Ocotal beach is approximately 15 mins away on foot and has a great restaurant, otherwise for the majority of restaurants it means a drive into Coco.Beach. We booked this some time ago when the property was positioned as a boutique hotel and under a different ownership as we discovered when we got there; the new owners have been there for just 5 months and encourage the guests to be as autonomous as possible; the only time they are really around is at breakfast. Rooms are serviced but you have to ask. Not sure if it's just a case of not having updated the info relating to the property but it wasn't quite what we'd been led to believe when we booked:. there isn't a restaurant/bar/coffee house on site as given which was very disappointing as this was supposed to be a few days of relaxation after a busy holiday and we ended up doing a lot of driving.
- Craig (8/5): A beautiful place with amazing views - Pura Vista is situated high up above Playa Ocotal so the views are amazing. We loved the pool and patio area. With a north facing vista you could get some nice late afternoon shade. We had tasty breakfasts daily (thank you Lili Alvarez) in the upper dining area. We used that same area each evening to unwind, listen to music, play cards, and hang with our travel companions. Our room (room 3 lower level) was clean and comfortable and the bed was very comfortable.
Thisbe and Mark were friendly and informative about the area. While the location was peaceful and beautiful it may not be for everyone. It’s a short drive to get into Playa Ocotal where there are restaurants and shops. There are only two restaurants within walking distance to Pura Vista Hotel (Father Roosters and Soluna Beach Bistro). Both were very good but it’s always nice to have a variety to choose from.
Room wise, our AC unit was pretty loud but necessary if you want a room temp under 26C.
Our shower was nice but didn’t drain well.
We found the checkout was a little unconventional. We were never charged before arrival as per our reservation confirmations so we settled up all costs upon departure. It was difficult to get a straight answer on the final billing and no invoice was ever provided. In the end we confirmed our final billing through WhatsApp correspondence. Really no problem, just a relaxed approach. Pura Vida.
- Carol (9/5): Beautiful views! - The ocean views are gorgeous! The rooms are comfortable, and the outdoor sitting area by the pool was great. Communication with the owners was prompt and helpful. Lili was a wonderful breakfast chef and all-around host. Great view of the night sky. No regular hours for on-site staff - would have been especially helpful when we arrived as we had some difficulty locating our room. If you don't have a car (we didn't), be aware that the location is quite far from town, and transportation options are limited. There is really only one restaurant within walking distance (Father Rooster), which has good food and cocktails, but the walking conditions aren't the best (narrow road, steep hills), especially after dark. Even so, we would stay there again now that we know what to expect!
- Linda (4/5): Not worth it. - The views were great. Had bugs in the room. Too difficult to get to. Terrible roads full of potholes. Our truck didn't fit in the parking lot. Check in process was designed for owner ease but not customer ease. Would never stay there again. Way, way, way too expensive for what you got. Included breakfast but I was ill from the eggs for 2 days.
- Mary (10/5): Perfection by the beach - So perfectly positioned near the beach and amenities The location and the very warm welcome by the owners.
- Claire (10/5): Lovely place to spend a couple of days. - Location was fantastic, ideally located for the beach.
Rooms were clean and comfortable and all necessary information was received in advance.
So nice to have a dip in the infinity pool after a hot day.
The chef that came up to the hotel to make breakfast was lovely and breakfast was delicious. Nothing :)
- Terri (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast was super high quality and very yummy. The view was spectacular. Flo was very helpful and kind, very accommodating. Highly recommend!!!
- Jeffrey (10/5): Paradise in the hills!! - Beautiful view, great location, superior service . Flo, the owner was gracious, attentive and friendly
- Allison (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (10/5): An amazing vista overlooking the beautiful Ocotal beach that was a short walk away. - The amazing view and incredible host(Flo). Nothing.
- Dave (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (8/5): Very good -
- Danielle (10/5): The views, breakfast, and hospitality was amazing. - the views are amazing and really enjoyed swimming in the pool everyday. ants, but hey you are in the jungle so kind of expected that.
- Tedra (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing view and lap pool right outside the room. Flo was very helpful with transportation. Room was perfect, minimal yet with all the necessities including small refrigerator for wine and water.
- Teodora (10/5): AMAZING - The place is awesome. We had a lovely time enjoying the pool and the breathtaking view. It's a bit complex to get to the place. Uber drivers got lost couple of times. You need a car in order to be able to move without depending on Uber
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bonnie (10/5): Perfection. - Beautiful clean rooms and EXCEPTIONAL views!! From your personal balcony, to the view from the pool, it’s the perfect vista. Highly recommend!! We stayed on the top floor and loved it.
- Anonymous (9/5): If you want a place you can truely relax and submerge yourself in nature, Pura Vista is reflect! - It’s very clean and has the most beautiful view and fresh and delicious espresso and eggs. Flo is a great host. Ants and it’s a little far from town.
- Luis (8/5): Very good -
- Yonatan (10/5): Amazing view - Everything was amazing, flavio is such a good host which really makes you feel home.
The breakfast is very nice.
The rooms are great, especially the shower and the huge bed.
Great place to stay and enjoy the amazing view! Nothing
- Charlotte (5/5): Basic hotel way too expensive for it’s benefits - I liked the beautiful view and the cold water in n the room fridge i did not like the quality of the mattress, the old and noisy AC split, the fact the pool was not accessible after 8pm and the fact breakfast was not included for $200/night.
It is a very simple basic hotel too expensive for its features
- Jane (1/5): Not worth the aggravation - the view is lovely The Inn keeper is angry and hostile towards guests. He should not be in hospitality.
- Birgit (10/5): Exceptional - The fantastic view from the swimming pool outside our room, as well as the the dining room.on 1.floor.
And all the different kind of bread and marnelade at breakfast. Floridor is an excelente host.
And the cleaning personal smiling and singing.
- Dr (10/5): "Poco Cielo" in Flavio's "Pura Vista Hotel Ocotal"! - Everything was divine!!
Everything.
Highest quality. Nothing to dislike at all!
- Claire (7/5): Good -
- Catherine (10/5): what a great trip. The owners where so generous and helpful. we felt right at home. The property and food was amazing!! - Beautiful location. Very nice and relaxing. nothing!!
- Madelyn (9/5): Superb - Friendly, helpful staff, amazing view, semi private pool
- Violet (10/5): Would recommend if staying in Ocotal area. - Lovely room, beautiful pool area. Great views from everywhere on property. Breakfast was delicious and host was very accommodating.
- Martine (10/5): stunning views from an exceptionally well presented property - spectacular views
peaceful
friendly and helpful owner and staff no criticisms - it suited our needs well
- Carole (10/5): the warm of home with the elegance of somewhere foreign - beautiful and exceptional staff and the pool was right outside our door let’s just say the roads in Costa Rica can be challenging
- Tracey (9/5): Superb -
- Lynne (10/5): last minute find…..a true gem - the view, the food, nothing
- Michael (8/5): Very good - Location is amazing and property is updated and clean.
- Kimberly (9/5): Superb - beautiful decor and thoughtful amenities. host was very attentive and helpful
- Anne (10/5): Wonderful views in delightful boutique hotel. - The views are magnificent out to the bay and the sunset. The breakfast, whether paying a little extra for items or what is provided, is most excellent. The little "extras" like high quality bathroom products, are a nice touch. Be patient - it is worth the slower pace as the couple who own this boutique hotel do almost everything themselves.
- Fernando (10/5): Exceptional -
- Patrick (10/5): Great stay! - Great hotel! Nice pool, walking distance to a small beach, a couple restaurants also in the area. Breakfast was good and cheap (bread and marmalade free, egg options extra). Friendly host who loaned us beach chairs, thanks! Only negative was a couple of ants in the room but that's typical for Costa rica
- Kathleen (9/5): We were looking for a peaceful stay and that is exactly what we found. - Gorgeous ocean view, only 6 rooms so not at all crowded. Everyone was friendly...staff, guests & owners. Modern, ultra clean facilities, good water pressure. Sandra's and Flavio's breakfasts were both beautifully presented and delicious. A choice of breads & jams were available at no charge and full breakfasts were a value for the price. Both air conditioning and overhead fan worked well. Our coffeemaker overflowed but I'm sure Flavio will correct the problem or replace the unit.
Wi-fi...it was strong in the dining room but poor in our unit. Owner is working on this problem as well. It is a difficulty in most of Costa Rica.
I would suggest entry
- Charles (10/5): An absolute perfect place- very personable and intimate! - Gorgeous view of the ocean, very quiet room and very nicely done.
Owner and staff are extremely friendly and helpful.
Food and coffee were delicious.
Super location to Playa Ocotal.
Loved this place. I can’t think of anything.
- Marlon (10/5): Exceptional - Nice place and friendly owners
- Alexandria (10/5): Pura Vista was among the best hospitality stays and relaxing paradise vacation! - The hosts are extremely accommodating, making you feel so welcomed like family. The view to the ocean is so incredible. Breakfast is gourmet and tasty.
- Marsha (6/5): Pleasant - The view was beautiful, and the owner was polite. the bathroom was full of ants
- Ciao (10/5): Exceptional -
- Debra (10/5): Love Love Love Flo was a great host and the breakfast was delicious 😊 - Amazing place, I believe this is what it would feel like in Heaven
- Ali (1/5): DO NOT BOOK - no value for money, bad location, Wi-Fi really awful. - Breakfast really poor. I arrived & the manager was bizarre, the check in was chaotic. I specifically asked for good Wi-Fi he laughed & said “I must admit room 4 has bad Wi-Fi, but you can work on the patio or the canteen on the 1st floor”.
I was told the breakfast is free, but he kept on talking about alcohol, he used expletives a few times & then spoke about alcohol again. I am a Muslim, I told him, he kept on speaking about local bars on offer.
I ignored all of this but when I went to my room it had no Wi-Fi at all & the room had a major pest infestation, which he laughed off as “you are in the jungle”.
The next morning I asked for another room as I am on a working holiday, he finally gave me a room with good wifi but tonight the pests are back, I have about 100 in my room, I can hear them, it’s disgusting.
It’s over $200 per night, not worth it at all. It’s a budget hotel, with awful Wi-Fi. It really ruined my first impression of Costa Rica, I will never come back.
- Megan (10/5): Fantastic Views in the Pura Vista - Had a fantastic stay! The feng shui of the property is great: opened, facing North, from every room. We enjoyed the pool, accommodations and breakfast. Thank you very much! I don't believe it's the owner's fault, but the wifi was not usable in the rooms, only common areas (concrete construction)
- Marjorie (10/5): This is a gem. - This was our first stop in Costa Rica. The room was beautiful and comfortable and the view of the sea is spectacular. Lots of attention to detail made our stay very comfortable and relaxing. We were greeted with cool towels and cold fresh water to feel refreshed. We took a dip in the pool at night. Each room has a private sea view balcony to sit and drink your morning coffee or just to soak in the beautiful scenery. Our breakfast was outstanding, with fresh food, beautifully presented at a table overlooking the sea as well as many beautiful plants and colorful birds. We felt so welcomed and couldn’t imagine a better way to begin our time in Costa Rica. Highly recommend! Everything exceeded our expectations
- Alayna (1/5): Bad -
- David (10/5): WE'LL BE BACK! - From the time we walked into the reception area we felt welcome. Breakfast was excellent and casual (in a good way). The views from the rooms were spectacular.
- Gabriela (10/5): Fantastic view, stay several nights! - The room is pretty cozy, modern and we'll equiped, with a fantastic view to the ocean and surroundings. Lots of birds around. Flavio (the host) was super helpful and prepares a great coffee :D
- Janis (8/5): Very good -
- Elizabeth (10/5): an absolute delight - stunning room , views , pool and the best breakfast the road up the hill
- Carla (10/5): great stay - the host was wonderful and the coffee was phenomenal! leaving
- Hanna (8/5): Very good - Beautiful property. We loved the pool and the room was immaculate. The owner made us feel very welcome and provided fantastic breakfast. The glass doors were thin and not sound proof, so we were woken up by the guests next door having drinks late at night.
- Garry (10/5): Serenity - This is as good as it gets plain and simple. Flo the owner and host is simply remarkable. The breakfast is divine. The rooms are large, comfortable and when you open up your door you look out to a view to die for. Nothing to dislike. I do have qualify to this as it is an adventure to drive there but that's part of the Cista Rica charm.
- Mary (8/5): The view was heavenly - A very homely atmosphere. the view was absolutely breathtaking. The breakfast had the French touch. It is a vacation for the path of getting to the location is quite hard
- Arnold (9/5): Best room with best view in Ocotal (near Coco) - Shower was good! Swimming pool very nice!
