Guest Reviews
- Sonja (10/5): We wished we had more time to just soak in the wonderful place. It exceeded our expectations by far - What was not to enjoy!! The people, the place and the birds. Was a wonderful time!
- Camille (10/5): Une expérience inoubliable - Une expérience inoubliable à Birds and Breakfast !
- Bostjan (10/5): Pura vida, not only for birds - Great hosts, great location, lots of wildlife, lodge dedicated to guests. Marce and Fabio have a great knowledge of birds .... and the birds are indeed at the frontdors of the lodge. Whole team happy to fulfill the needs and wishes of guests. A place hard to leave, but easy to return...
- Daniele (10/5): Amazing people and place - I recommend this place to anyone.
You need a 4x4 😬
- Linda (10/5): Exceptional - A camp for bird watchers. The hosts are amazing here. It really is all about the birds. I became a bird convert here after having no special interest. I saw so many varieties of birds and they were so neat. Also, the other travelers were so kind, which also made it. The hosts really also make the place with their hospitality, and they can book trips and tours. There is a restaurant in town with a wood stove that was really good. This is off the beaten path so.. it’s a bit like camp, expect bugs and less amenities. Recommend spraying before bed. Early mornings as the early bird gets the worm!
- Nicolas (9/5): Superb -
- Micaela (10/5): Welcoming staff with a stunning view - Wow. What can I say about my short stay at Birds and Breakfast? It wasn't long enough! I will definitely be coming back. Fabio, Marcela, and the rest of the staff were very welcoming right upon check-in. Their place has endless pictures, books, maps, and even souvenirs. I appreciated Fabio and Marcela's knowledge of the species and also recommendations of activities as I often asked them for suggestions. The breakfast was the best we had in all of Costa Rica! And, the view made us want to just stay there all day. I look forward to recommending this place to others and staying here when I am back in the area. I would just double check the areas in which you want to explore, as this is about 45 minutes from La Fortuna. We didn't mind the commute, but it is something to note. Also, definitely arrive with daylight for check-in as it can be slightly hard to find with all of the turns and no sign indications. And, as stated in their description, you will need 4x4 as the terrain was the rockiest we experienced yet.
- Typhaine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adriana (10/5): Perfect place to relax - Beautiful location with gorgeous garden. We saw loads of birds in the morning. Lovely breakfast and Marce made us feel at home
- Scott (10/5): Great place for bird lovers! - If you are a bird lover, this is the place for you! Marcella and Fabio are wonderful hosts and made our stay truly memorable. The morning bird tour was so informative. We had a great room with access to balconies from which to enjoy the scenery. Breakfast was delicious and we appreciated having the kitchen available to store things in the refrigerator. We saw tons of birds and learned a lot. Highly recommend. Just consider renting a vehicle with 4-wheel drive. We made it with our sedan but would have been more comfortable with a stronger vehicle.
- Cristian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lex (8/5): Very good - The location with the birds and near the park.
- Robert (10/5): Would of stayed longer if I had the time. I only saw a faction of what the place had to offer. - Fantastic location and setup for bird photography. Comfortable cozy inn. Inn makes breakfast but not other meals. It's focus is birds. Fresh coffee on tap all day. I liked it just fine.
- Leduc (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent location, very quiet and close to a small village. Marcella and Fabio were excellent hosts and took good care of us. The view is wonderful and the birds gave us a show every morning and every evening. Fabio is also a guide and gave us a tour of the primary forest. I would advise it without any hesitation.
- Melanie (10/5): An exceptional experience - As mentioned in other comments, a wonderful and exceptional experience. Great hosts, lots of birds and a lovely breakfast.
- Jacob (10/5): Exceptional - This is a gorgeous property tucked into the mountainside with lots of bird diversity to enjoy and wonderful hosts that go above and beyond. I wish I had stayed longer!
- Xiaoliang (10/5): Exceptional - Such an amazing place!Everything was wonderful! The hosts were very friendly .we saw so many lovely birds which flew or stayed in the garden from dawn to dusk. nothing
- Damien (10/5): Exceptional - All the birds that could be seen during breakfast
The owners are really friendly and helpful
- Libby (10/5): Wonderful place to stay and see Costa Rican birds close up in a homely environment ☺️ - Very friendly and helpful hosts. Stunning location and homely feel. Nothing.
- Katharina (10/5): Amazing place, great hosts, unique wildlife experience! - Everything was just outstanding! Marcella and Fabio are great and very attentive hosts, and great guides and wildlife experts, who love what they do!
Although it's called "Birds and Breakfast", the lodge is an exciting experience not only for bird watching fans, but also for "mainstream guests", who want to get away from crowded touristic places and want to see some real nature.
They offer a bird watching tour in the morning and a "night walk" in the evening, both highly recommended.
Also they give you lots of recommendations for hokes and activities.
Although the lodge is right in the rainforest, surrounded by nature, the lodge is super clean. We had only one tiny lizzard in our room once.
The hosts have two super cute and friendly dogs, which is a great pleasure for dog lovers.
Last but not least a super tasty breakfast is included in your stay, but they also offer lunch and dinner, which are also very tasty! -
- Joe (10/5): Exceptional - Great location next to the Children's Eternal Rainforest for viewing birds. You really get to see numerous species while eating breakfast. Fabio and Marcela were great hosts, and willingly shared their knowledge on the local wildlife. Accommodations and food were top notch.
- Peggy (10/5): A place to relax - Marcella and Fabio are awesome hosts who know a lot about the beautiful nature and wildlife. The rooms are spacious and clean and the breakfast was really good. You can spot lots of birds whilst having breakfast, even tucans.
We did two tours with Fabio and they were awesome. We even saw two snowcap hummingbirds.
Definitely will recommend this place!
- Christopher (10/5): Really nice part of our two-week Costa Rica trip - Other reviews say it all. A really nice place to stay (two nights in our case). Marce and Fabio are great hosts with extensive knowledge of birds, ecology, etc. (Fabio is also a guide.) Room had (for us) the best mattress and sheets during two weeks in CR. We had really fine breakfasts, and dinners by arrangement. Coati in the tree adjacent to our balcony. Toucans, more toucans and other birds seen right from the open-air dining table, with scopes and guides at hand. The location is at 600m, with a view and nice breezes. No bugs at all (August). The road in is steep at times but paved in sections and well-compacted coarse gravel elsewhere; mud is no issue at all. Trails of the Finca Stellar entrance to the Bosque Eterno de los Ninos are a short walk up the road. Nothing worth writing about.
- Arno (9/5): Fantastic - Location, the staff, the birds, the tour Nothing
- Phuong (10/5): A haven for a naturalist - Birds and breakfast has everything a naturalist can dream of: a beautiful and active garden with lots and lots of bird species visits; many reference wildlife books from birds, mammals, reptiles…; great location not only for the stunning view but also for being next to the quiet area of Children's Eternal Forest; spotting scopes and binoculars available for birdwatching and very cozy elegant rooms and 24/7 coffee/tea bar. Big thanks to Fabio and Marcella for being such amazing host! Can’t stay longer.
- Michael (10/5): Perfect! - I had the most wonderful time at Birds & Breakfast! Everything was just perfect for me. The wooden house and the room is very charming and everything was spotless clean. Marcela and Fabio are lovely hosts and go out of their way to make their guests comfortable. I went on a night walk and an early morning bird watching tour with Fabio. I can highly recommend this, if you come here. Fabio has excellent knowledge of all the birds and frogs and more and spots them where you only see green vegetation. Nothing
- Hailey (10/5): Go here!! - I can't rate this enough!! If you need a place to stay, come here. Marce and Fabio were the best hosts ever. The property is so beautiful and we were instantly greeted upon arrival after Marce personally arranged a taxi for us from downtown. They cooked us the most delicious dinner both nights we were there. The day after we checked in we were looking for something to go do. Marce and Fabio sent me all the bus times and gave me recommendations on where to go. The first place we went was a great restaurant with a giant property in the back with trails and a river. Our hosts personally called the restaurant owner so he was expecting us and took us on a little walk to see some sloths. Second place was an amazing sloth tour at a rescue center that helps animals that have been run over or electrocuted. Our hosts weber way above and beyond and it was a great memory that I'll cherish A bit secluded and far from town and further from La Fortuna than expected
- Jiyoung (10/5): A wonderful stay, especially if you love wildlife - We loved our stay at Birds and Breakfast! It felt like staying at your Costa Rican family friend's place - familiar, comfortable and not touristy / commercial. We booked a night walk tour with our host and loved it - he was so knowledgeable and showed us two sloths with their babies, red eyed tree frogs and many more animals that we wouldn't have been able to see on our own. Breakfast at this B&B was also spectacular - homemade breakfast everyday with a view of the many birds flying into the garden was something we'll remember. We even saw toucans from the garden! Location-wise, we debated staying in La Fortuna vs. here but I'm so glad we stayed here instead. La Fortuna is extremely touristy, commercial and stressful. This location is right next to the Eternal children's rainforest, which is equally great for hiking and wildlife but much less crowded than the alternatives near La Fortuna and very calm. None!
- Terry (10/5): Outstanding birding and hiking destination - The location was absolutely amazing. Great hiking right from the inn. Birds, sloths, frogs, everything right there.
Great breakfasts. The hosts were really some of the most knowledgeable I've been around, and I'm not a beginner at these types of places. Outstanding all sound. That we had to leave after such a adjourned time.
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was perfect. Marci and Fabio are the best hosts ever. The local breakfast was everyday so good! We loved the nighttour, the view from the house in the beautiful garden. The birdwatching. Well we loved our stay at Birds & breakfast and hope to come back! /
- Ori (10/5): Highly recommend, very unique - The owners are super nice and helpful. They wreak havoc both working for many years as rangers on the rain forest reserve right by bird and breakfast so they are super knowledgeable about the area, animals and plants.
Great place to view Toucans and many other birds. We also did the night tour with Fabio which was great :)
- Van (10/5): Beautiful lodge, amazing hosts, and so many birds! - First off, the hosts were the loveliest people. they made incredible breakfast and made me feel at home instantly. They also helped me book tours which was wonderful. The facility itself was gorgeous, super comfortable and the bird watching was supreme.
- Vivien (10/5): We spent the most wonderful time in this beautiful place. - The owners have been friendly and super helpful & accomodating.
The kitchen was free to use and well equipped.
The garden was just beautiful and a good place to watch all kinds of birds.
The hotel is up a hill in the middle of the rainforest which is lovely.
This was the perfect start to out trip in costa rica! Thank you so much! There was nothing we didn‘t like. There are two friendly dogs - just do you know.
Driving up should be done by a 4 by 4 car. We managed to do it with a 2 by 4 but we really struggled.
- Joanna (10/5): Exceptional - This is a real gem of a place. It's on the edge of rainforest and the owners obviously love birds and are keen to help you see them and explore the area. The owners are very kind and chilled out. There's a great patio to sit on to eat, watch the birds and look at the view.
- Nora (10/5): very nice vew from the terrace, having breakfast with birds - breakfast varied daily with typical costarican food. Hosts very friendly and helpful, they helped to contact a local guide for tours in the forest, bird watching from the porch at breakfast was great, got even the chance to see a sloth.
spacious rooms, clean and quiet.
- Benny (10/5): Exceptional - Its such a great und quit place with a view into the rain forest. Marce & Fabio are very lovely host‘s with absolut fantastic recommendation for restaurants or activities
- Paul (10/5): A wonderful place to stay for a real Costa Rican experience. - Marcella and Fabio were fabulous in making one feel welcome and making sure we had everything we needed. Aptly named, both the birds and breakfast were wonderful. The accommodations were also very spacious, well-appointed and comfortable.
- Angelina (9/5): Superb -
- Cédric (9/5): Beautiful birdwatching terrace - Lovely hosts. Great breakfast on the terrace where you can spot a lot of birds, the local bird chart was a great idea! Possibility to use kitchen and fridge. Laundry Service was convenient (extra charge) No mosquito net over the bed, but the hosts were very open to let us put up ours. Ticket prices to the local station feel quite steep (20$ p.p.), but on the upside you will most likely be able to enjoy nature without anybody else around.
- Robert (10/5): Wonderful place - This is such a sweet location with the kindest, most helpful hosts. Great breakfast, with a fun view of all kinds of birds visiting the yard. toucans are regular visitors, as well as a host of other birds. A highlight of our trip.
- Philipp (10/5): Exceptional - We had a fantastic time at this place. You have a wonderful view from the terraces and we saw plenty of wildlife (kolibris, sloths, tucans and plenty of other colorful birds) which can bei experienced from up close with Fabios telescope. Marcella and Fabio took us on a nighttime and daytime walk and were very welcoming and friendly. Breakfast was tasty! In general, it was one of the best places we ever stayed.
We were able to access the house with a regular car (no 4x4), but I guess it may be different depending on the season.
- Aggcee (10/5): Excellent place! Hihgly recommended - Everything was excellent. It's an amazing place when you are a bird watcher. There are plenty of birds during all day. You can watch them from the beautiful terrace. The owners are very helpful and so nice. Just few steps from Birds & Breakfast you can visit the Children's Eternal Forest. We can recommend you stay in Birds & Breakfast !
- Ton (9/5): Superb -
- Kathy (10/5): Lovely, quiet and peaceful. Great service, and very friendly staff. - The fruit and coffee were amazing. The breakfasts were delicious, but the servings were too big. It would be nice to have a choice of serving size and menu items. The owners were absolutely wonderful and very helpful in arranging transportation and tours. The setting could not have been better, beautiful, quiet and remote. It might have been nicer to be a little closer to town.
- Casey (10/5): Exceptional - Stunning property at the edge of the Children's Forest. We saw beautiful birds. The owners of this property are very knowledgeable and dedicated to conservation.
- Brian (10/5): You came to Costa Rica for an adventure and for the friendly people. You've found it. - Outstanding B&B, really the best decision of our trip. Super friendly hosts, house just outside of the Children's Eternal Rainforest, great meal at Gaupote, fun conversations in the common areas with interesting guests.
- Somsen (10/5): Exceptional - Location and host/hostess
- Richard (10/5): FAN-DAM-TASTIC !!!!!!! - What makes Birds and Breakfast Very Special are its owners Marcela and Fabio. They treated us like loving family. I cannot say enough about their graciousness and hospitality. They went totally above and beyond our wildest expectations. They fully recognized that we two Floridians (me at 83 & my SO at 71) were not physically up to hiking those steep trails so they made up for it with other activities that we could comfortably handle. While birds are their focus and we saw/photographed many we also saw sloths and various animals and got to sample their local food extensively. Only the weather for our first two days, unusually cloudy and rainy but the warmth of Marcela and Fabio made up for that.
- Pranjal (9/5): Superb - The hosts were lovely and very helpful. They were very accommodating and provided great suggestions for activities. It was incredible to see all the birds and other wildlife around the property. The rooms were spacious and clean. And the breakfast was also nice with a wide variety of fruits.
- Kalpesh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nic (10/5): Absolutely loved it. - Fantastic location within forest but far reaching views when weather allows. Great breakfast table facing extensive bird feeding area, regularly topped up throughout the day. Fabio and Marcelo were great hosts and took us on a night tour as well as setting up their Swarovski scope to see more local wildlife including sloths. Unlucky with the weather but a great place to sit out the rain and all the more birds came.
- Gabriela (10/5): Beautiful house in amazing surroundings just by the entrance to national park. Welcoming and helpful owners. We had a lo - Beautiful house in amazing surroundings just by the entrance to national park.
- Stojan (9/5): Superb -
- Fernando (10/5): Magical stay watching nature around - The place is marvelous, almost inside the rainforest reserve. Marcella and Fabio made our stay memorable, and gave us super useful information about the surroundings and how to explore Chidren's eternal rainforest reserve.
I'd recommend to stay as long as possible, as this place is magical, full of peace, calm. Birdwatching (and Sloth watching!) during the breakfast time is something you'll never forget.
- Stephanie (9/5): Superb - Breakfast was excellent. The hosts went above and beyond to ensure my family had a great experience. I would 💯 go back again and stay at Beds and Breakfast. The only reason I wouldn’t give the place 10/10 is because the mattress in my room was too hard and hurt my lower back. But my husband and the other couple who traveled with us didn’t have any issues with the mattress. So it could a preference thing. Anyways, I really did enjoy my stay.
- Arthur (10/5): Absolutely amazing place and fantastic hosts! -
- Kevin (10/5): Amazing and Calming - This place was more than awesome!! Fabio and Marcella made our stay memorable. The birds, the food, calming ambiance, comfort of the room, the views, everything! Ohh and the lovely dogs also. I definitely recommend staying at Birds and Breakfast! Everything was number 1!
- Anissa (9/5): Wonderful - Lovely place highly recommended to disconnect as you will be surrounded by nature and wild animals. We were lucky to see a sloth as soon as we arrived ! The host are very nice and helpful they know a lot about wildlife and gave us the best advices for activities arround. We loved the night tour that they organized (ate good food with nice people and saw a lot of animals and insects). The breakfast is good and the place comfy !
- Matthew (10/5): Relaxing nature retreat (with delicious breakfasts) - We highly recommend Birds & Breakfast! The location is so beautiful and peaceful, and the accommodation felt like an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Fabio was an excellent host and went above and beyond to provide us with recommendations for nature walks, activities, and eateries in the local area. A trek through the Children's Eternal Rainforest is a must! The traditional breakfasts each morning were another highlight. Nothing! We hope to be lucky enough to return for another stay soon.
- Hinako (10/5): You MUST stay here! - The hosts are really kind and supportive, very quick response.
The room was so comfortable and in great atmosphere.
And the breakfast was super nice!!
You can have tasty meal with a lot of beautiful birds and cute dogs!
- Peter (9/5): Familial stay in the nature with a lot of different animals and very tasty food - We really enjoyed our stay at birds and breakfast!
The breakfast and dinner was awesome and the atmospere was familial. The owners gave us a lot of helpful advice on tours near Fortuna and Monteverde.
We had the chance to watch a sloth, a lot of different birds, a toucan and litschi-eating monkeys through the binocular from birds & breakfast and got litschis for ourselves as well ;)
We got our clothes washed and dried clean, fast and tidy. No mosquito nets and a lot of loopholes for insects.
We build up our own mosquito net and then everything was fine.
- Shaquille (9/5): Very secluded, serene, and peaceful. - Birds and breakfast was awesome. It's up in the forest, and very secluded. Breakfast was amazing, and we even saw a sloth! The hosts even helped arrange a taxi for us since our rental car arrangements fell through. It was a little difficult to get the shower hot, but it definitely wasn't a big issue.
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional - A nature lover's paradise
- Simon (9/5): Simply a perfect choice for anyone who doesn’t like crowds and appreciates nature. - Our stay at Birds and Breakfast was exactly what we had hoped for. We liked being surrounded by nature and away from people. We saw a variety of bird species (including two different types of toucans) and, during our night walks, five different types of frogs (including the read eye). The hosts were wonderful. We learned so much from them about Costa Rica’s nature and history. Overall, it was a perfect start to our CR trip.
- Robert (10/5): Birds & Breakfast will be my first choice for accommodations when I return to the area. Highly recommended. - Very comfortable, relaxed atmosphere—cozy. the grounds are very nice—bird and wildlife friendly. Awesome having breakfast on the veranda with the sunrise and so many different species of birds. Hosts Marcela & Fabio are warm, charming, knowledgeable, and engaging. Fabio is a licensed guide and we spent a fantastic day at the Arenal Observatory seeing nearly 40 species of birds The only downside for me was the bathroom in my room needs some updated touches and a stronger water supply. My visit occurred at the end of the dry season so perhaps the natural water supply was a bit lower than normal.
- Kelly (10/5): Exceptional - Birds and Breakfast was amazing! The home is beautiful with stunning views and so peaceful. The hosts are incredibly warm and welcoming as well.
- Benedikt (10/5): Birdwatching and relax - Super nice hosts. Excelent breakfast with birdwatching and view of the landscape. Very quiet, save and relaxing. Surrounded by nice rainforest.
- Hendrik (10/5): Perfect stay. Great value for money - Beautiful B&B next to the Bosques eternos de los niños. Incredible project. The hosts are very friendly and gave us a delicious breakfast. Lots of birds in the morning having breakfast with us. Can definitely recommend staying here. Nothing. Everything was perfect
- Filipa (10/5): Exceptional - Everything is incredible.
Super peaceful, as you see in pictures.
Distant from La fortuna mess but an easy ride there.
Marcela and fabio are incredible hosts. They will cook a local traditional breakfast for you and put binoculars for you to see the surroundings.
This place is surrounded by nature, so expect insects, frogs , birds and others. They won't hurt you.
The house is fully equipped for you to cook and store your food.
Has a small workout area, chess, cards ,books and an amazing ping pong table !
Room is big and cleaned.
The Internet is not incredible, which makes a good reason for you to enjoy the property 🥰
- Jps104 (10/5): Incredible location, incredible hosts and incredible wildlife. - The location is stunning, and the hosts were super helpful giving us plenty of advice and tips on the local area. We followed their advice on several occasions and were never disappointed. From the accommodation, we managed to see many birds including Tucans, and we also saw a Sloth in a nearby tree. Thanks so much for having us!
- Leah (9/5): Superb - A gorgeous Lodge in the heart of the Costa Rican rainforest.
Staff is very helpful, friendly. Tasty breakfast. If you have limited time in the area, this location is far from touristic destination. If you have couple of days to spend there, it's perfect because you have many things to do around the lodge.
- Christopher (10/5): Birds y breakfast, fabuloso. - We spent a full week here. Marcella and Fabio are terrific hosts and will help you plan out great excursions to all the many attractions nearby. It truly is “birds and breakfast” as each morning we got a full-scale show with dozens of beautiful and colorful birds of many species just a few meters from our table. And breakfast was tasty and varied each day, too. It’s only a few kilometers from La Tigra but quiet and off the beaten path only 100 meters so so from one of the entrances to the Children’s Eternal Rainforest reserve with some fine hikes and chance to spot other wildlife. Nothing came up that was disappointing.
- Marcelina (9/5): Highly recommended! - Absolutely magical stay with Marcela and Fabio! The setting is beautiful and feels off the beaten track (literally), but easily reached from SJO same afternoon we arrived. The entrance to the rainforest is so close, we went twice during our stay. Marcela was super helpful before and during our stay, quick replies, great recommendations.
We were able to use the kitchen for some cooking and also the washing machine for our laundry, which was really helpful.
On our last evening, we went on a night walk led by Fabio (we arranged it a couple of days prior, and thankfully it was possible, but it's better to book a bit more in advance). It was an amazing experience. It was a tiny group of us (just three B&B guests) and Fabio took us down to their neighbours' house a little down the hill, where we were greeted by the owners with yummy fresh juice and delicious meal afterwards. We saw so many animals in that one tour (frogs, birds, insects, fish, spiders, sloth mum with baby)! Overall one of our favourite stays in Costa Rica - thank you! We managed fine without a hired car as you can shuttle from SJO, book local taxis and use a bus from town to La Fortuna, but it would have made our stay a bit simpler if we had had our own vehicle.

- Cathia (10/5): Perfect place for wildlife and relaxation. Will definately return. - Lovely place in nature . You cannot get enough of the view and birds around . Hosts are super friendly and accommodating . WishI had stayed here longer .
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional birding and views in a a clean comfortable space with friendly hosts. - If you are looking for excellent birding and gracious hosts, don’t miss this place. Toucans arrived soon after I did and were followed by spottings of honey creepers, scarlet-rumped tanagers, an oropendola, a Trogon, a parrot, and various other indigenous birds. The B&B is across the road from a large private rainforest nature reserve (open weekdays) with an extensive trail system. Accommodations were simple and clean. The rooms downstairs have private baths and good WiFi is available throughout. There are a couple of common areas with comfortable armchairs and couches as well as a computer-friendly work area. The common area terraces provide outstanding views of the surrounding mountainous countryside. The altitude of about 2000 feet made it cool enough to sleep comfortably at night. Speaking of sleeping comfortably, the bed I slept on had a great mattress. The included breakfast consists of coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, eggs, toast, local cheese and rice and beans. Dinner was available at a reasonable price. A kitchen and fridge are available for the use of guests
The layout of the common areas and the WiFi would also make Birds and Breakfast a good fit for remote workers (myself included). Larger mirror and hair dryer in the bathroom.
