Guest Reviews
- Debra (10/5): - Host was very accommodating and lovely
- Pardeep (9/5): -
- alexandra (8/5): -
- Kane (7/5): - The host Rod was very welcoming. Room was comfortable as were the common areas. Breakfast and tea/coffee supplies were great. Short drive to walks, Olinda etc
- Jennifer (9/5): -
- Victoria (9/5): Charming - The king room was comfortable and private. Loved the pats with the friendly dog who was well-behaved. Very good value for money with the breakfast included. Rod was friendly and helpful. Kitchen sink was slightly dirty but everything else was clean and charming.
- mick (9/5): - Amazing location very quiet and relaxing lots to see some lovely walks.
Rod the owner was great couldn't do enough to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. There was nothing we didn't like
- Emma (10/5): -
- Purser (5/5): -
- Susan (6/5): We enjoyed ourselves. - It was in a very picturesque place, loved the view. It was a lovely building and Rod was very friendly and obliging. The bed was comfortable and the linen was clean, but I have to be honest, the room we ended up in was dusty and the vanity top in the bathroom was dirty around the taps, the toilet seat wabbled about, but we were originally supposed to be in a different room so maybe that was the problem.
- Cawthorne (9/5): Such a beautiful part of the Dandenongs. Will be back with my partner. - A spacious room. Welcoming feel to the place. Allowing a bit wider parking. As I was the last vehicle in, if I had a larger 4x4, I wouldn't have fitted in. As it was, I chose to leave a little earlier, so as not to inconvenience the other guests with my close parking.
- Melissa (1/5): Nice place outside, owner is lovely but the stay was very poor , needs a good upgrade - Dusty, everything needed a good clean and a upgrade. I left early as I couldn't stay any longer The house was lovely outside and the area.
Rod was a lovely man but unfortunately this house is not suite to sleep. Good for a reception venue ,
- Emma (10/5): -
- Deepti (10/5): - Everything about this place :) such a cozy and beautiful home away from home.
- Carolina (10/5): -
- Schoenmaker (7/5): A good base to retreat to & enjoy Mt Dandenong. - The location was pretty, a Cafe was a short drive away with a view! convenient to all the viewing gardens and Olinda.
If you like country Victorian homes, then this is for you, it is traditionally decorated and furnished. Breakfast was generous with cereal & eggs on toast.
A soak in the claw foot bath was a bonus. I found the kitchen needs some detailing.
- Kerry (10/5): -
- Matthew (10/5): Just what I needed - Great place to stay and a fantastic location. I couldn't stay longer
- Nishadi (5/5): -
- Kanas (10/5): -
- Nils (9/5): Exceptional. I would come again. - It was rustic! It gave an old-world feel that made it comfortable. My partner and I had the best night’s sleep we’ve had in a while. We couldn’t find any knives or plates for the toast.
- Laura (10/5): -
- Andrew (8/5): -
- Lauren (6/5): Quiet and serene - Quiet area and nice historical and olden style decor inside. The room was clean and nice. The kettle and toaster in my room (I stayed in the deluxe room with ensuite) were quite old, I recommend the owner can get a new kettle and toaster from Kmart or Target which are about $15-$20 each. It just makes the stay abit more easier.
Also there was some spiderwebs on the outside railing fence outside the bathroom winter in the ensuite, so maybe a quick dust and clean of the verander railings would be good.
The toilet seat cover was also wonky in my ensuite bathroom. Just a quick fix and easy to get fixed.
- Wendy (9/5): Perfect for an absolute taste of the Dandenong Hills..easy access to the surrounding villages. - Every detail to provide an exceptional stay was provided by Rod...extremely comfortable beds, a stocked pantry and fridge that we could access for breakfast, an interesting and quirky collection of furniture perfect for a 'homestead stay'.
Stunning views over the valley added to a wonderful stay. Nothing to add here.
- EJ (9/5): Beautiful traditionally decorated house in a stunning location - The decor was brilliant, it had real old-world charm and it was lovely to sit on the balcony with a view of forest and hear the birds singing. Admin was all very efficiently done, and we felt welcome. Our en suite room was ideal for us, and it was very quiet and restful. The breakfast didn't have fresh fruit or bread, it had elements like butter, jam, cereal, so it was fine as far as it went, but best bring your own supplies to supplement it. Minor feedback for the host would be to provide more comfortable seating on the balcony, and less-stuffed pillows that work better for people of smaller builds.
- Lindy (10/5): -
- Hedvika (7/5): -
- Victoria (9/5): A great stay in a comfortable room - We had a lovely stay. Parking was very easy. We were greeted and shown our room. The room had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. It was very handy to have a fridge so that we could make our own lunch for our adventures. There is lots to see in the area.
- Susie (9/5): Would recommend to those who like rustic and homely - It was olde worlde, lovely furnishings and quality food products. Communal kitchen well stocked. 2 lovely lounges available. Location a bit off the beaten track, but having said that we enjoyed the peace and quiet.
- Mark (10/5): - Charming property, staff very helpful and accommodating.
- Monika (7/5): -
- Janet (10/5): - We loved everything about our stay.
The beautiful facility
Lovely location
And our host Rod was exceptional.
We will be staying again 😊
- Vinay (10/5): -
- Mick (9/5): The Best Guest House in Melbourne? - Rod is an exceptional host. Parking was a challenge when the place was fuller but with mostly overnighters it was manageable.
- Joy (9/5): A lovely two days exploring mt Dandenong. Bush walks, views, shops, coffee and pubs. Love to return soon - Peaceful, stunning location! Everything to explore is so close. Breakfast was great.
- Karen (9/5): Rod was a very nice host and kind. Loved our stay and would definitely stay again. Thank you - Very quaint, lovely old world place. Being a large person the shower was too small
- Jana (10/5): -
- Bindy (8/5): - Loved the set up and meeting the dog downstairs, was in its own backyard but clearly learned the perfect spot for attention. Amazing view of the mountains and felt further away from home then we were.
- shivek (7/5): - peaceful environment. Need some new furniture and clean cobwebs in room
- David (8/5): -
- Guest (10/5): Very quiet stay with a beautiful view and only hearing birds. - Our king room with ensuite was very clean. Loved historic furniture with modern amenities – reverse cycle heating, coffee machine and full access kitchen. Especially appreciated finding chocolate in the room’s fridge, also milk and soy milk. City drivers may be uncomfortable returning through forest on narrow roads close to sunset time. Learnt the lesson and the rest of the stay was beautiful.
- Kiem (8/5): - Serene peaceful environment surrounded by nature. The old fashion furnishings in the house and bedroom. Good breakfast. Lovely balcony and lots of outdoor sitting areas.
- Nicole (10/5): -
- Kat (9/5): -
- Valerie (10/5): Home away from Home - What an incredible aspect so high in the mountains. Kalorama is quaint place with magnificent views. The Rustic Guesthouse was anything but rustic...it was amazing with such oldworld charm. Beautifully furnished and the colour scheme was so warm and embracing. Our host Rod was so friendly and accommodating. He met us at the car and carried our large heavy bag up the stairs and settled us into our room.
- Michael (9/5): -
- Richard (8/5): -
- Tunio (10/5): -
- Elaine (10/5): - Excellent accomodation with lots of charm & character. Rod the host was very welcoming.
- Jamie (8/5): -
- Andrea (10/5): Nice, calm and friendly place to rest. - A very special, cosy place. Friendly host, familiar feeling. Superb surrounding and quiet. We had a very good sleep and did some amazing trips nearby. Little space for the luggage an no idea where to hang the towels.
- Jill (3/5): Disappointing. - There was a lot of stuff provided should you need any of it. The place needed a thorough clean.
There was no water until about 10 o'clock in the morning. We left without showers.
- Maura (10/5): -
- Annabelle (10/5): - Good breakfast, wonderful fireplace and hot tub, delightful interior decor with warm host.
- Keith (10/5): -
- Maddaleine (10/5): - The house had a wonderful warm feeling to it.
Our room was also incredibly charming and set up beautifully.
My partner and I booked this as a cheaper accomodation and were blown away by the standards for the price
- Cassarndra (10/5): I booked a surprise for my parents.
Although very picky, they absoulty had the most wonderful time. -
- Gurpreet (9/5): Great value for money,old money,vintage - Beautiful vintage rooms😍
- Kriselda (7/5): -
- Chris (8/5): -
- Mariana (10/5): Everything! Fantastic stay - Everything! Fantastic stay
- Chris (9/5): A fantastic stay and a lovely host. -
- Wayne (1/5): I couldn't stay - I felt very uneasy - I like that Rod the Owner tried to be helpful and accommodating. The stairs leading up to the door were water warped and some weren't very steady.
The decor and feel of the house was very dark and kind of foreboding. The weather that day was poor though, so that may have contributed to the overall feel. I slipped on the rug inside the door, although it did have a non slip fabric underneath - it probably could use an update.
I was the only one in the house when I arrived and my room was up the end of a long corridor. It was very dark and creeped me out. Rod did say he left some lamps on for me, but they didn't offer enough light for me to notice. Some parts of the house, like nooks off the corridor were almost pitch black. I took photos with my flash on so they looked brighter than the spaces actually were. The dog downstairs was barking which added to the isolated feeling. The room itself was clean but the bed curtains were dusty and made me sneeze. The table was set nicely. The whole vibe of the place made me very uneasy and I was on the verge of a panic attack. I ended up leaving and cancelling my stay. Unfortunately I didn't receive any sort of refund, which I understand for the Friday as no one else could take my place, but I felt the 2nd night could have kindly been refunded and put back on offer.
Overall it was a very unsettling and expensive weekend.
Being neurodiverse I can be more sensitive to external stimuli and ot can take me awhile to feel comfortable. I could never have gotten comfortable there.
HOWEVER - other people who have reviewed their stay have really enjoyed the atmosphere, so it's obviously an individual thing. And I can see that the Owners do try to make their guests feel welcome which is a positive.
- Richard (9/5): -
- Suzi (9/5): We enjoyed our short stay, had everything we needed. Was quiet and relaxing. - Everything Accessable and convenient. If I had to choose something, probably the bed wasn’t that comfortable.
- Delma (10/5): Peace and beauty in the Dandenong Ranges. - The location, the ambience, the value for money and the peace and quiet. Unfortunately our arrival and departure times meant we were unable to meet Rod, but he rang to make sure we knew where to find everything and he seemed very friendly and welcoming. It was all great.
- Damien (10/5): BnB Of Our Dreams - Incredibly Cozy House - The scenery was magnificent as this place was in a perfect location where you could enjoy the serenity of the area. It was a welcoming environment that was decorated beautifully, possessing a large kitchen to cook breakfast in where there were a good amount of good breakfast options. The host Rod was very welcoming and the house was as cozy as it appears in the listing. Rod was easy to get a hold of for any of the questions that we had. Easy parking available. Bedroom, bathroom, lounge and kitchen came with all the necessities and the best part was the cosy fireplace which Rod maintained for the guests. We will certainly be coming back here in the future.
- Cavalier (10/5): Absolutely brilliant experience! - The location is idyllic, the brekky perfect, the house is full of character and Rod the host is friendly with a good eye for detail. Nothing.
- Sharyn (8/5): Very good -
- Marlene (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ron (1/5): Bad -
- Anita (8/5): Very good -
- Glennis (10/5): The house was so beautiful and comfortable. - The house was so beautiful and comfortable.
- Angela (4/5): Disappointing - Our room was very small and did not have a wardrobe. The house was not very clean and there was a musty smell throughout. The pillows were rock hard and the mattress was uncomfortable. It had not been clearly stated on the website that the bathroom was shared.
- Catherine (8/5): Very good - Comfy bed Cold and dark when we arrived
- Emily (8/5): A comfortable and homely guesthouse in a quiet neighbourhood, nestled atop a hill in The Dandenongs. - The beautifully decorated bedrooms, each with their own theme, and a comforting fireplace in the loungeroom. The dogs barking early one morning, for a couple of hours.
- Scarlett (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yinan (9/5): Superb - Great place to stay, breakfast is good.
Staff is amazing:)
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful rustic home with a beautiful surroundings, such a beautiful atmosphere relaxing and the house feels like a dream to live on… the owner of the home is nice and pleasant person, I can’t wait to visit again, also the spar really clean and could’ve had a enough of it… relaxing and peaceful…. - Cameron (10/5): Very welcoming staff at a relaxing comfortable site. - Comfortable bed clean rooms with separate heating & air conditioning. Nothing.
- Debbie (7/5): Unique and comfortable - The bedroom was a good size and the beds were very comfortable. The location was very close to the wedding we were attending. Parking was easy. Rod was very hospitable We had not anticipated that we would be sharing a bathroom with potentially three other couples. The decor was very interesting but the living areas were quite dusty and crowded. The dogs were very noisy and had us awake It was just not what we had expected.
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emma (9/5): Very pretty and peaceful stay , traditionally and tastefully decorated - Homely
Traditional
Peaceful and beautiful surrounds
Generous breakfast 1 bathroom shared between 4 rooms
- Aallbbaa (9/5): Superb -
- Ford (9/5): Great house to stay local - Great little place to crash and attend local events or bushwalks. Bed was comfy and house was well maintained. Was great to be able to make a cuppa.
- Lisa (8/5): Very good - The quietness of the location and the comfiness of the bed. The room was well laid out and plenty of amenities on hand in the room. The communal living and kitchen areas were well stocked. There was a slight urine smell in the corridor which I feel came from the toilet area. I didn't have the smell in my room which was good. Perhaps it was just the age of the facilities. The facilities were clean from what I could see.
- Titania (8/5): Very good -

- Beverley (9/5): Superb -
- Robyn (10/5): Exceptional - Very welcoming,
