Guest Reviews
- LLCF (10/5): - Casa excelente, atendimento maravilhoso
- Paul (10/5): -
Rien
- Elise (10/5): Exceptional stay in Santa Teresa - Truly beautiful house in the heart of Santa Teresa. Exceptional host and delicious breakfast, with a view on the Corcovado. It can be a bit loud during the night as the rooms are street facing. Thankfully, Maria Teresa provides the guests with some earplugs.
- Allanah (10/5): Unique, fun and vibrant experience staying in a family home in Santa Teresa. - We couldn’t rate this stay any higher! Staying at Maria Teresa’s beautiful home was a unique, fun and vibrant experience that was unforgettable. We felt like part of the family, met fellow travellers from other parts of the world and ate a delicious breakfast each day. Whether you want to explore the fantastic neighbourhood of Santa Teresa or relax in a beautiful home and garden, we couldn’t recommend this stay more, especially if you’re looking for an authentic Brazilian experience.
- Pascale (9/5): - Nice home in an arty/bohemian area (safe - use common sense) and close to Selaron steps. Very welcoming family (they speak English; I so wish I could speak Portuguese). Was the only guest when I stayed there (4 nights). Breakfast is really enjoyable. Uber drivers don't like this area as it is very hilly with winding roads (and slippery when it rains).

- Ernest (10/5): - Super cozy place, amazing view from a kitchen and best hosts! Thank you for a warm welcome and biggest recommendation
- DANIEL ARMANDO (10/5): Perfeita - A casa é magnífica.
- Deirdre (8/5): - Lovely setting, host was very friendly and helpful
- Reiner (10/5): Herrlich. Wie immer. - Kleines Paradies in Santa Teresa.
Tolles Frühstück. Schöner Garten mit kleinem Pool und Grillplatz. Wieder mal alles perfekt.
Danke Maria Teresa.
Quelle belle rencontre !!! Je recommande cet établissement !
- Jennifer (10/5): Great stay at a beautiful, special home in Santa Teresa. - Breakfast was wonderful, fresh fruit and coffee and cheese and Maria Teresa was very accommodating to my dietary needs. The two cats, gardens, and views were incredible and everything was looked after. Great stay, great house, great neighborhood, wonderful host. Would book again. This is no fault - and actually a valuable selling point of the property - but it is located in a very special neighborhood high up in the hills of Santa Teresa. I had some trouble booking late night Ubers to go home. I primarily used Ubermotos, bus, and walking as my main means of transportation.

- Holm-Mercer (10/5): - Lovely place to stay and highly recommend, they were very kind and welcoming
- Risa (10/5): Lovely! - the host Marisa and her mother, neighbors were very nice and I was traveling by myself so made me feel warm. Amazing views, house and breakfast. Good location to explore the city. I truly recommend to stay, I’d love to come back. Also, Marisa introduced me the tour guide lady named Dolores. If you wanna tour with her, also the option!
Thank you guys again for making my trip memorable!!
- michael (10/5): - Sehr tolle Gastgeberin, Telles Ambiente
- michael (10/5): - Sehr angenehme Betreuung, sehr hilfsbereit und herzlich Tolles Ambiente und sehr nette Gastgeberin
- Mariano (10/5): Increible estadia. Nada

- Duncan (10/5): In the Casa Vermelha you experience the absolute best of the magical and unique Santa Teresa. - The breakfast was excellent with a very nice selection of tropical fruits, cheeses, bread, juice, coffee and scrambled eggs. Also excellent goiaba jam made by the owner Teresa's mother. The views of the Christ statue on Corcovado mountain from Casa Vermelha are stupendous. Teresa herself is a lovely person, always willing to share her great knowledge of Santa Teresa, Rio and Brasil with her guests. She also very kindly made excellent caipirinhas for our group of six. There was no charge. She is a very generous woman and an excellent host. Thank you Teresa! Leaving her beautiful home was the only thing I didn't like! Nothing more to say here.
- Eric (9/5): Super sejour - Une belle maison familiale avec Maria Teresa qui a ensoleillé nos petits dejeuner ( d’ailleurs Suoer) ,
- Annabelle (10/5): Nous recommandons !
- MATTHEW (8/5): Wonderful place and location, especially if you don’t want the usual hotel experience - Great location in Saint Theresa, close to tram line, walking distance to metro, and some ok restaurants and bars nearby. House is characterful, with views of Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer). Marie Theresa and her mum could not be more helpful and hospitable Staying here is more like staying with family than in a hotel. A bit chaotic, don’t expect everything to work, the pool was full of petals (bit cold this time of year, anyway), breakfast time depends on when the host gets up,
- Lorena (8/5): A dining room with a view - It's like spending a few days visiting a friend.
- Anita (10/5): Casa Vermelha was such a surprise for us. The house itself is gorgeous, everywhere you look there is something beautifu - La bellezza della casa e del giardino e la simpatia e ospitalità di Maria Teresa
- Dean (10/5): Beaufitufl property, beautiful location, beautiful people with a real social conscience. - Everything! A beautiful property and house, owned and operated by beautiful people who go way out of their way to make you feel like family. I was particularly enthralled by the intelligent discussions that we had together, not only with the "Marias" but also with other guests over the exceptional high quality breakfasts. Santa Teresa is a little bit far from many of the beaches and iconic attractions of Rio. However, Uber is readily available and although the drivers were a little mystified by the labyrinth cobblestone streets we always made it with no problem at all. It's really just a point to be aware of. Santa Teresa itself is a very, very cool little neighbourhood that is easily within walking distance from Casa Vermehlha. Certainly, I would choose to stay here again if ever I make it back to Rio (which I definitely hope to).
- Linda (7/5): Amazing location, beautiful old house, good for a couple of nights stay - This is a traditional experience in a Brazilian home which for 1-2 nights is amazing. Loved the area, Maria the host and her beautiful old house. Breakfast was fresh and plentiful. Overall a good experience , if a little out of our comfort zone The property being authentic does not have the comforts of a hotel and sharing a bathroom was a little bit of a shock. As we stayed for 4 nights not having anywhere at all to hang a single thing up was a little difficult
- Fausto (10/5): Lovely home - I loved my stay atCasa Vermelha. The room and bed were very comfortable. The house is stunning, but the best was to have the breakfast looking at the Corcovado. The host, Maria Teresa, is lovely!!
- Ines (10/5): Beautiful place, great host - A beautiful designed place. And a host who does her best with her guests. It is a stylish old house.
- Dirk (10/5): Exceptional -

- Jacqueline (10/5): Home away from home - We had the best time ever here. Maria theresa made our stay unforgettable. The house is so beautiful, great location, amazing view and the breakfast is Incredible. It is the best guesthouse we have ever stayed in.Thank you again maria, for your kindness, laughes and your warm heart. You are one of a kind ❤️ Nothing
- Mike (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alexis (9/5): Maria Teresa is a fantastic host and we really enjoyed our stay at Casa Vermelha - Maria Teresa is a fantastic host and the house is very beautiful and well located
- Juan (9/5): Welcoming, hospitable, warm and fun hosts. - María and family were such welcoming, hospitable and fun hosts. Breakfast and caipirinhas were superb and plentiful. Pleasant and spacious garden surrounds, with expansive views.
- Jambalaika (10/5): Absolutely the BEST stay ever! - How can we describe the stay at Casa Vermelha? Exceptional is too little. It was beyond any expectation we could have had. D. Maria Teresa is the best host we've ever encountered - and I have travelled way too much. The house itself is a dream, the breakfast is the yummiest thing, the conversations, music and well... everything, is just absolutely perfect! We will definitely be coming back and send everyone we know is visiting Rio to stay here! We could have stayed longer, we hated that we left because our plane was booked!;) There is nothing that we didn't like, really. It was all brilliant!
- Elise (8/5): Very good -
- Adam (10/5): The perfect immersive place in Santa Teresa - Arrived to Casa Vermelha very early in the morning at the midst of a heavy rainfall, just after an overnight transatlantic flight. Regardless the odd arrival time, my host Maria greeted me with warmth and kindness. She instantly offered a fantastic breakfast and made sure that my room is going to be ready ahead of check-in time. During my stay, I had a very memorable, immersive experience in this accomodation. The dining room offers views to the hills of Rio and on clear days, to the world famous Christ the Redemptor statue as well! The living room, garden and patio area is very cozy, especially after long days walking around the city, when you just really need a good place to rest. Finally, I had the opportunity to experience an authentic garden party in carioca style on a friday night. The Santa Teresa neighborhood offers an authentic experience too, since it is a relatively nice area of the city, but not as touristy and cosmopolitan like Copacabana, Botafogo or Ipanema. I cannot really mention anything, Casa Vermelha offered a wonderful stay for a traveler like me. The only notable issue is the location. Sometimes it is tricky to catch an Uber driver who is willing to take you uphill, driving on the steep and crooked streets during rush hour.
- Robert (9/5): A pleasant home like setting—recommend. - Maria was an exceptional pleasant and helpful host made one feel at home when away. Shower floor in shared bath needs attention.
- Andreasen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Noluthando (10/5): Eclectic Beautiful Santa Teresa Stay - I loved everything about the house from the decor to its location. The Santa Teresa area is an artsy, eclectic & creative area of Rio. And is the perfect spot for this house. The house itself is big & has a lot of trees & flowers which makes it so much more beautiful. Each of the communal areas have such beautiful decor. My room was comfortable and well maintained.
And our host Maria, her daughter & helpers were amazing. They all were very patient and explained things to me in English which really helped. Maria is such a ball of energy & she made me feel so safe in her house. I felt like it was a home away from home. I am very glad that I found this accommodation. It was one of the best experiences.
- Nadya (8/5): Very good - Beautiful house & garden The climb up but it is a good exercise
- Benaiah (9/5): good for a short stay - host was lovely, breakfast was good, close to Santa Teresa location uphill so it will be difficult to walk back, but ubers are affordable
- Colette (9/5): Superb - I loved the house! It's a beautiful home full of character and one feels right at home from the moment you arrive. It's warm and inviting. The breakfast is a real treat and beautiful views from the dining room make it very special. I was very happy and liked the fact that it felt like home away from home.
- Kim (10/5): Exceptional - Maria is really nice and knowledgeable about Rio and surroundings and shares willingly her stories. The garden and the views from the house are spectacular.
- Arno (10/5): Lovely Bed and Breakfast in interesting neighborhood - Personally I loved my stay there. You will not only stay in an amazing house which is kept super clean and receive a great breakfast, you will also get to know the super sweet people, who run the place. Maria was super open and helpful about anything. There are some reviews, which I think are a bit undeserved based on wrong expectations, so I will try to help here: If you expect a distanced and anonymous "hotel" atmosphere, this is not the place for you. If you want a bed and breakfast which offers you - besides a clean room and a good breakfast - an immersive experience of people living in Rio, this is your choice.
- Melis (8/5): Lovely stay in charming family home - The communal spaces are beautiful, amazing views and friendly host The room was really small for two people but it was hard to tell from the pictures, I should have looked more closely into the square footage so my mistake but I would recommend choosing the bigger room option if you are two people.
- Dimitris (10/5): Loved it! Precious hospitality - Loved the place and the people
The location, the hospitality, the fun!
It was incredible. Ill be going back there for sure. The room i rented was a little expensive for its size. But nothing too crazy.
- Paulina (10/5): A beautiful B & B in a really cool neighborhood in Rio! - The house is absolutely beautiful, with a peaceful patio and pool area. The dining area has a view of the Redeemer. The staff, I believe it was Felipe at the time, was incredibly accommodating and the breakfast was great. Santa Teresa is a great area and I would definitely return to Casa Vermelha again!
- Diana (10/5): Exceptional - This gorgeous guesthouse looks just as beautiful as on the pictures, but it is an even better experience than that! Maria Teresa is an extremely warm and attentive host. She helped us understand the area of Santa Teresa (which is about a 20min walk to Lapa), gave us support and recommendations and made us one of the best Caipirinhas I have ever tried. A great person to talk to: she is active in her local community and generously explains Brazilian culture and society if you are curious. You feel invited into her home. The breakfast is absolutely delicious with fresh fruits grown in the Casa Vermelha garden (which you can also explore - see photos of view and garden) and taken in the dining room with a view on to Christ the Redeemer. I loved that it was possible to be flexible with time of breakfast and Check-out, which was appreciated. Haven't tried it but it is possible to do some laundry at a fee. We enjoyed sitting in the hammock on the porch and using the pool when it was hot out. I believe only 1-2 rooms are rented out a time, so it felt fairly private. You can hear the cars on the streets which can be a little annoying unless you have earplugs / soundproof headphones.
- Broussard (2/5): Not sure why this place has good reviews. - Generally, the house and garden are pretty and charming. The water shut off twice. We booked a room with (1) Twin Bed and (1) Full bed and when we got there were presented with a room with just one bed. The owner fixed right away however it was annoying to say the least. We accidentally left the A/C on one day while we left and the owner turned off the power and scolded us for it when we got back. Felt like my mother punishing me. Also, got locked out the last night. We had to ask for the wifi and details of our stay. The owner and her daughter argued in front of us as soon as we got there. Overall, I did not like the vibe of the owner or the place, and would not stay again.
- Joseph (9/5): Delightful spot in the hills of Santa Teresa. - Incredible location perched atop the hills of Santa Teresa overlooking Christ the Redeemer. The villa feels very safe, secured by walls on all sides, and boasts a beautiful garden with a small lap pool. The hosts are a delight and the complimentary breakfast is something to look forward to every morning, along with the company! The bathroom is across the hall from the room so not for someone who would require complete privacy.
- Eva (10/5): Great stay! - Amazing stay! Breakfast was fresh prepared every dat and served in a beautiful breakfast room with a VIEW! We felt at home from the first moment! We can highly recommend this amazing place.
- Ailsa (10/5): Truly wonderful and authentic stay in artistic neighbourhood of Rio - Maria Tereza is the most welcoming host I think I have ever stayed with. She is so generous with her time and I loved conversing with her in the morning over breakfast, as well as with the other guests. The house itself is beautiful, a true gem in a fascinating part of the city. Santa Tereza is a more cultural and artistic area, and as two females travelling alone, we felt very safe walking around. Maria Tereza also invited us out with her to a jazz music performance nearby, which was very generous of her and a truly unique experience (we would never have found this place on our own, it was full of locals from the area). Overall I strongly recommend staying at Casa Vermelha to anyone who wants to experience an authentic side to life in Rio de Janeiro and enjoys socialising and meeting new people. Nothing! Bear in mind that you might be sharing a bathroom with other guests. That's not a negative (and was not a problem at all during our stay).
- Anonymous (4/5): Well the breakfast was nice but it is full in the Favelas! - The breakfast was nice and also the view. One Bed was fully in the light from outside! The whole room was full of light of outside it waked me up at 3am and you couldnt shut it down.
- Cecilia (9/5): Beautiful house, great location and very kind host! - The house has an incredible charm with a beautiful garden that Maria (the host) has a lot of pleasure to introduce. We loved spending time with her, to know more about her country, the brazilian habits and life in general :) The room was a bit noisy as it is right on the street and cars pass by. Just think about taking some earplugs and it’ll be just perfect!
- Juliano (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful house managed by Maria Teresa, a very lively host that participates in many cultural and social projects in the neighborhood of Santa Teresa. She knows a lot about the Bairro and its historical buildings. Her mum prepares a delicious breakfast, served in a beautiful dining room decorated with Portuguese tiles.
- Tamsin (9/5): Wonderful host in a charming house, a unique place to stay - The host Maria-Teresa is a wonderful and welcoming person and is the reason you should stay here. You will meet someone who is welcoming travellers into her home and sharing her wisdom and hospitality with you, making this a unique place to stay. It is really like staying at a friend’s house so if you want a typical hotel then look elsewhere, but if you want a truly wonderful experience of Rio then book! As an extra the views and breakfast are amazing.
You will be in the bohemian Santa Teresa area away from the main drag but close to Lapa (for samba/bars) and can get ubers into town (even if they take a little longer to come pick you up!)
There are also two cute and friendly cats 🐱 If you are a light sleeper then i recommend to bring earplugs for cars going by!
- Philipp (10/5): Exceptional - The house, breakfast and location is great. But the owner really made the stay exceptional. She cares about her guests, is interesting to talk to (perfect English) and she has a lot of useful information for you. Thank you a lot and hope to see again one day.
- Suzanne (9/5): Superb - The location in Santa Teresa is superb and the house is exuding old-time but charms - a home away from home. And did I mention it has a view to Corcovado? But the best part is Tereza, the host. I can recommend Casa Vermelha to anyone!
- Elze (10/5): A green oasis with warm hosts - Our stay was perfect! It felt like at home. Maria Teresa is a charming lady and we felt like visiting a friend. They helped us with everything and gave superb reccomendations. The breakfasts in the kitchen with a view to the hills made it very special. The location is lovely, with scenic views and lovely bars. It is a well kept unique oasis in the middle of Rio, where you can rest before or after visiting a noisy city. I would definitely stay there again! Everything was great
- Vivienne (4/5): Disappointing -
- Solenn (10/5): Exceptional - Teresa welcome you as a part of her own family. She is really nice, helpful, kind, funny, passionate and her house looks like her. comfortable, well decorated, beautiful view from the terrace. You feel like home at her place
- Kevin (8/5): Nice House and Host, but have good Earplugs with you :) - nice host, nice view, nice garden, nice house if you have a light sleep it can be hard, because the rooms are close to narrow street and windows are not really isolated
- Jane (10/5): One of the best guest houses and hosts I’ve experienced! - This was one of the best guest houses I’ve ever stayed in! The host was amazing — super friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were delicious, the view is incredible, the location is great. I will definitely stay here again if I go back to Rio!
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
