- Renata (10/5): -
- Andrea (10/5): I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful Veleiro. Perfect for nature lovers and yet so close to city. - The fantastic location, the relaxing atmosphere and the great service. Bob and Richard are wonderful and very kind hosts, very knowledgable about Rio and Brazil in general , with great advice on how to enjoy Rio. Bob is also a tour guide who will take you to places off the beaten tack. My room was very cosy and spotless. Everything was great- a memorable stay in all respects.
- Nesprias (10/5): -

- Le Roux (7/5): A safe stay away from the hustle and bustle of Rio - The location felt safe. Entrance to the property was well-monitored. Walking downhill was interesting and we spotted some birds along the way. The outside lapa was made available for guests but not adequately equipped with cutlery or crockery. The room was somewhat damp, aircon marginal.
- Aleks (9/5): -
- Clare (10/5): A tranquil location with incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and kind hosts - couldn’t recommend enough. - I cannot express how incredibly informative and helpful Rob and Richard were and what a lovely experience we had here as first timers in Rio. Delicious daily breakfast in a calm oasis - exactly what you need in a busy city. We had no problems during our stay here.

- Morgan (10/5): - Absolutely gorgeous. Makes you feel one with both nature and the city. Peaceful, lovely, and romantic.
- Alanis (10/5): -
- Sukh (9/5): Nice last minute find during Carnaval - Rob and Richard were wonderful hosts, great to chat to (Rob has some great travel stories!) and very accommodating/helpful with whatever you needed. The location is safe and quiet up a hill, but it's easy enough to walk down to the main area in Botafogo in just over 10 minutes via a couple of sets of stairs, and taxis/ubers are also easy enough to get back at the end of a long day. The breakfast every day was fresh, plentiful and varied, and the room itself had everything you needed and a comfy bed. Would definitely stay here again!
- Ana Beatriz (10/5): -
- Kristina (10/5): Splendid - The nature , coziness , staff and the cleanliness
- Daniela (9/5): -
- Antonia (9/5): A little getaway in a huge city, a quiet, luxury room to stay in where we could recover from the pulsating energy of sou - A very supportive and friendly owner and a homestay that felt like home.
- Scheder-Bieschin (1/5): Good facilities but the experience was destroyed by the owner. - The location is good, the facilities are fair The owner insisted that we pay cash. He insisted so strongly that I would call it borderline harassment. When we left the rooms for an hour for breakfast only, he complained if we left the Aircon running which is also weird.
- Hadrien (7/5): -
- Thomas (10/5): -
- ANA (8/5): - A pousada é linda e bem cuidada.
- Charlie (6/5): - The place was perfectly clean and the bed very comfortable. It’s a beautiful building in a very nice area of Rio. Quiet, with a lot of plants and tree around. So lovely. Great breakfast as well. We felt underpressure for check in time because the owner wanted to go to a party that day. It’s a shame because we had done everything we can to be there at a convenient time for him. But when we are travelling and obviously dépendant on public transport fluctuations there’s not much you can do. There was a lot of traffic that day so the bus was late; I let him know when I had WiFi and then he was asking to be kept in touch which was very hard because I didn’t have a local SIM card and the bus WiFi was not working. It made us feel very uncomfortable.
We paid what I consider a high price and were expecting impeccable welcome and services. Unfortunately the sink in the room was not possible to use, and there was no WiFi on the second day. He also made us pay for a bottle of water that was left in the room to use which was a bit upsetting - we thought for the price of the room at least one bottle of water was included. It would be a good idea to invest in a water filter for guests to use as Rio is a very hot place and the bed and breakfast is quite far from convenient stores.

- Richard (10/5): A peaceful stay in a tree house on the outskirts, but really the center, of Rio - I loved the location, the breakfasts, Rob, and the general sense of peace and beauty found at this place. It is exactly what I wanted - a quiet retreat that could serve as a base to see Rio, without breaking the bank or making me feel like I was in an unsafe area. Just excellent.
- Friedrich (8/5): A great experience thanks to location, very helpful owner and the atmosphere around - Very nice location and atmosphere, very nice owner and staff. Even the guests! 🤣 Room was smaller than expected and without windows, but there is enough space to sit and relax outside.
- MONIQUE (10/5): For those looking for a haven of peace - Tte property is located in a green area but very close to the centre of Rio by taxi, which is a great advantage. Loved my room and the setting in a beautiful garden with pool. Nothing
Sehr empfehlenswert.
- Shawnette (10/5): The B & B is in a quiet and safe neighborhood which is ideal for single travelers. - Breakfast was freshly made and delicious every day. The whole house and property were kept clean daily. Advice was kindly offered and gratefully accepted. It was obvious to me that the owners have made great efforts to make their home comfortable and lovingly maintained.
- Anne Claire (8/5): -
- Ian (8/5): Very good host. - Great
- Lucas (10/5): Conforto e tranquilidade.
- Simon (9/5): Would highly recommended staying here. - Rob was incredibly helpful. Shared his local knowledge to help plan our visit and nears travel.
- Rik (9/5): - Rustige omgeving.
- Camilla (10/5): A wonderful stay that felt just like home. - We absolutely loved our stay at O Veleiro! It was such a pleasure meeting Rob and Richard – they were incredibly kind and welcoming. Our room, right by the pool, was simple yet very comfortable and private. We truly felt at home and would love to stay with them again someday.
- Isabela (10/5): -
- Claudia (10/5): - We really liked the pousada, it feels like a little oasis, it's perfect to relax, very quiet and a beautiful garden with hammocks and a pool. The two hosts are very kind and welcoming. The breakfast was freshly made and served.
The neighborhood feels safe and we would definitely come back!
- Stefan (7/5): - Es liegt in einer wunderbaren, grünen Oase. Via z.
Niets
- Esme (10/5): A wonderful stay - A wonderful spot in Rio with a lush green garden and lovely surroundings with hammocks. The beds are comfortable and the breakfast is brilliant - hot drinks, fresh juice, cereals, eggs, fruit, different types of bread, jam, cheese, ham - plentiful and no need for lunch!
There are different types of rooms to suit all budgets, which is great as not all accommodation offers this.
You can walk to the nearest restaurants in under 15 minutes or alternatively book an Uber easily and quickly.
An added bonus at the B&B is the dog and two pet tortoises :)
The owners are friendly, informative and very helpful. They can advise about areas of Rio, specific restaurants, and how to book activities. We had to be at the airport early and so they booked an early-morning taxi for us and provided us with a breakfast to go.
Highly recommended!
- Martina (10/5): Exceptional - Everything Breakfast might need to improve a bit
- Ariadna (6/5): Pleasant - Chill neighborhood. Unpleasant owner.
We were forced to pay cash because he said his machine is not working. We did that every if we didn’t have cash with us and weren’t planning to withdraw.
You can’t even speak in this place, at 10:30 he came saying we were singing and bothering people. We were talking.
Even after all our flexibility, at the end we couldn’t even leave the luggages there.
- Ines (10/5): Getting spoiled - Beautiful garden, comfortable room. Rob was very helpful with everything, had good ideas for every day. Breakfast was good and healthy with lots of fruit.
- Gunnar (8/5): A beautiful and unique stay with some important drawbacks - The property is beautiful and feels impressively secluded and safe for Rio. The room was spacious, with a large, comfortable bed. The owner was responsive, though not always accommodating. It's a unique accommodation - from the property to the owners, if you're looking for an experience where you get to know the owner and feel like you're in your own Rio villa, then we would recommend.
The location is great for relaxing, but less ideal for convenience—you likely won’t be popping back and forth easily. For a future trip, I’d choose a place that’s easier to access. Check-in and check-out were inconvenient—arrival was only allowed before noon or after 7 p.m., which didn’t align well with our unpredictable travel schedule. The owner did communicate this to us while we still had cancellation option. We also couldn’t leave our bags past 4:30 p.m. on check-out day, which was earlier than ideal for our evening flight.
Despite the remote setting, noise was an issue: loud cars and trucks driving by on the cobblestone road, barking neighborhood dogs in the morning, and frequent plane traffic overhead.
The bathroom was technically private (standard room) but located outside the room, which felt awkward at night. It wasn't inaccurately advertised, but it was a bit misleading.
- Karolina (10/5): Fantastic stay! - we absolutely loved this place!
Botafogo is safe and unique :) wonderful place among the trees - very quite! Rob and Richard are heartwarming and very supportive with Rio trips also give extra tips for you to have a safe visit. Rooms were very clean and cleaned daily, the rooms were equipped with a fridge, cosmetics and clean towels. breakfast always served with fresh juice with some sides like fruit salad/ fresh bread/ cheese and ham/cereals. A clean space to relax with deckchairs next to the pool :)
1h walk from Pao de Azucar / Uber easy to get :)
- Jo (10/5): A hidden gem - Friendly, knowledgeable hosts, lovely accommodation, a little oasis of calm in a bustling city. We really enjoyed our stay. Rob has a wealth of local knowledge and is happy to give advice about places to visit and local transport options. The walk to the nearest restaurants and shops is only 10 minutes. Breakfast is lovely , the best scrambled eggs!
- Jim (10/5): Small bed and breakfast with tropical plants Owner speaks perfect English and Portuguese - Great breakfast Friendly staff comfortable beds lovely atmosphere Need a Uber to get around walk into to the business district was a little long
- Ian (8/5): A property full of character in an elevated location. - If you looking for accommadation with lots of character then this is the place for you. Breakfast was very good, fresh and cooked as required. The outside 'help yourself' bar was a nice touch. The host, Rob, was very helpful and informative. He also gave us a lovely tour of the attreactions we wanted to visit. His contact skills before arriving were top class. There are several steps to consider at this property if you have issues.
- Johan (6/5): Worse than it seems - Friendly hosts that do their best to make you feel home and provide tips.
Generally good breakfast with eggs, bread and fresh juice every day. While being helpful the host also came across a bit too much when it comes to providing safety tips. I was told several times not to wear my over the shoulder bag (even through the microphone of the camera doorbell on the street while waiting for an uber which felt a bit creepy).
Bugs/ants found their way to my room. At least the room was equipped with an anti-bug spray.
Not every uber knows the location which makes it a drag sometimes to get transport because of canceled rides. Most of the time I made the walk down the hill to start the day.
The room was very hot without AC. I slept better on the rainy days.
With the shower being directly next to the bed the room was also quite humid.
The ceiling fan was dusty, I had to remove dust from my bed several times.
- David (10/5): Rob’s knowledge of Rio and the surrounding areas was very useful. We went on a couple of Robs tours which proved to be a - It was in a very quiet part of a crazy city. It was very clean. A good breakfast and the staff were all very helpful There is a short cut up and down the hill to the local shops. As the weather was so hot we always used a taxi so never got to use the shortcut.
- Nicola (10/5): Excellent hosts, highly recommend - The location was good. Easy access to the tourist spots and local shops. The hosts were fabulous and gave lots of hot tips on how to navigate the city and attractions.
Breakfast had a different juice speciality every morning which was delightful. The hosts make you feel as comfortable as possible to ensure you have a good stay. The place is on a hill which is great for being quiet but is a challenge for walking. It does keep you fit if you're up for it.
- Amanda (10/5): Exceptional - The owner was very helpful and the atmosphere, decor, and views were great. The location was ideal. The room I stayed in was stuffy and dark, requiring the doors to be kept open, and the pool wasn't clean. There was also a lot of noise at night. But overall, the charms, benefits, location, and value of this place outweighed these slight negatives.
- Patrick (10/5): Rob and Richard bring a wealth of Rio history and adventure in every story, meal, and tour! 10/10! - The property was beautiful, the hosts were very warm, helpful, and flexible, and the breakfast was fantastic. Watch your toes around the friendly resident tortoise!
- Sally (8/5): Lovely B&B in a great location. Great breakfast. The owners really helpful. You can get an Uber from the front door - Great location and friendly owners.
- Mikhail (10/5): A fantastic stay with lush greenery, superb breakfast, and relaxing hammocks—a perfect retreat! - Our stay was absolutely fantastic! The independent entrance and lush greenery surrounding the place made it feel like a hidden retreat. The hammocks just outside the room were the ultimate highlight—perfect for relaxing and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Plus, the breakfast was superb, making each morning even more enjoyable. We can’t recommend this place enough!
- Philip (10/5): We were looked after really well - Very friendly
- Franklin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nicholls (8/5): Very good - Excellent location - nice and quiet in the context of the city but close enough to easily get to all the sights. Breakfast was very nice.
- Tracy (10/5): The O veleiro bed and breakfast is a special place. It’s nestled on a hillside amongst beautiful trees, flowers, with t - Our room was relaxing and spacious with a comfortable bed, snacks/drinks (for a small fee) and nice bathroom. I enjoyed waking up to singing birds, the beauty of all the plants & flowers and a healthy home made breakfast.
What I appreciated about my stay at O Valeiro is I was treated like a guest in their house. This place is a bed and breakfast with lots of character and beautifully decorated. Robin and Richard are excellent hosts. They take the time to get to know their guests, share experiences and give great advice on places to visit. I really enjoyed that they both took the time to sit down with their guests and have breakfast with all of us.
Something to consider if you plan on staying here: If you have bad knees or some walking-type disabilities, there are steps you have to climb to get to the B&B and another set of stairs for breakfast…. But for me it was totally worth the experience.
- Stephanie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Luis (8/5): Great stay with great hosts. - Breakfast was excellent! The hosts also are very kind and attentive. Air conditioning and the shower need updating.
- Sarah (8/5): Very good - Great staff, very cute cozy place, lovely breakfast, easy access with Uber The bed was a little hard and the shower kept switching from hot to cold
- Alexandra (10/5): Wonderful place in Rio, perfect hosts - Wonderful peaceful oasis in Rio, yet very close to many attractions. Wonderful hosts! We’ve felt very very fortunate to stay there.
- Pedro (7/5): Good -
- Bryan (10/5): Peaceful oasis in a big city - We thoroughly enjoyed spending a relaxing week at O Veleiro. You do not feel you are in a bustling city in this tropical oasis full of birdsong. One could not ask for better hosts than Rob and Richard. They go out of their way to make their guests comfortable and are always available to give good suggestions for what to do and how to do it. It was easy and surprisingly cheap to book an Uber to get around. Breakfast is always delicious and it was always fun to see and meet other travelers. If you want a memorable experience we highly recommend O Veleiro. No complaints about anything.
- Marta (9/5): Superb - That's a great B&B situated in a safe area in Botafogo. It's very easy to get to Sugarloaf, and you can even walk to the Christ Redeemer. Owners are the treasure box of tips about Rio, and they are always happy to share their advice with their guests. Rooms are simple and clean, the walls are very thin - you can hear your neighbors (owners always intervene if there is any problem). On 3 nights out of 5, there was very loud music in the neighborhood, outside of b&b. I was able to fall asleep with earplugs.
- Joseph (8/5): Botafogo B&B - Great hosts ....very helpful and knowledgeable. Breakfast was OK and comfortable bed.... The property is a lovely home nicely decorated but the room I had could do with some serious updating
1.Plug sockets hanging off the wall and depressed in the wall do hard to use with adapters
2. Shower is either hot hot or cold ...difficult to get the right mix with the mixer
3. Safety box didn't work because no batteries
4. Careful of the mossies outside in evening.
5. Keys and locks all a bit flimsy
6. Flat screen tv is about 12" x 12" and difficult to work....no apps etc bit hopeless
7. Walls are thin so don't talk too loud after 10pm....
- Claudia (9/5): Nice - Spacious room ( master suite), safe area, good breakfast. You need to be aware that the property is on a hill and you have to walk about 15 min. to the next restaurant or supermarket.
- Antonio (10/5): Exceptional - Very friendly and helpful hosts. Quiet evening and amazing view of the city. The location is nice but makes it a tic harder if you're planning on being on the move and heading back to base during the day.
- Sebastiaan (10/5): Amazing stay if you want to escape busy Rio. Very kind owners! - Very nice and beautiful place with a lot of nature. Rob and his partner are very sweet and kind. They know a lot of things to do and have giving me a lot of tips. Their dog is very sweet and they even got a turtle! -
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional - First of all, the hosts were both wonderfully kind, nice and incredibly accommodating. Whenever we went to breakfast, Richard was prepared with freshly cooked eggs, the best pastéis I have ever eaten, or tapicoa. We enjoyed their stories and interactions, and we appreciated the local advice that they provided. We wished that we could have stayed for even longer. (We also wished that we could have spent more time with their beautiful dog Luna and the cute pet turtle!) Absolutely no complaints.
- Sharon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hannah (9/5): Superb - Lovely house, beautiful garden, really helpful hosts, in a nice quiet area
- Josna (10/5): Exceptional - I recently stayed at O Veleiro Bed and Breakfast and had an outstanding experience. The staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating, always going the extra mile to ensure my comfort. The room was immaculate and beautifully furnished, providing a cozy atmosphere. The hotel's amenities, including the pool were well-maintained. Additionally, the location was perfect, offering easy access to nearby attractions. I highly recommend O Veleiro Bed and Breakfast for anyone seeking a delightful and memorable stay.
- Cristiane (9/5): This was a quiet and homey lodging with excellent hosts. - Our hosts were wonderful to talk to and to get tips about what to visit in Rio and life in Rio and Brazil in general. We really enjoyed spending time with them. The breakfast was excellent with various fruits, breads, and proteins. The coffee was also superb, as we expected being in Brazil. The location is tucked away up a steep hill and residential street, so it is pleasantly quiet in a noisy city like Rio. The downside of being on a hilly and quiet residential street is that getting around was most efficiently done by Uber and taxi instead of walking. We knew this going into this place; for us it was trade-off, with the positives being the fantastic hosts and quiet nights for sleeping.
- Jennifer (10/5): Exceptional - A delightful oasis in Rio! Super welcoming, delicious breakfast, and lots of helpful tips on things to do and plans for the day.
- James (9/5): Superb -
- Sylvain (9/5): Great owners in a beautifull and Peacefull place. Love this place! - Great owners in a beautifull and Peacefull place.
Breakfast Time was perfect.
Love this place!
- Rana (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts were super gracious. I will definitely book again. It was so homey and nice. I loved the breakfast, recommendations, and chats.
- Hanna (10/5): Beautiful, clean and well-equipped guesthouse with super nice hosts and lovely tropical. - It’s a wonderful place in a beautiful and safe area of Rio, like a little oasis with hammocks, garden, little pool and wonderful view. The hosts are super friendly and nice people, truly devoted to give the best experience to their guests.
Their breakfast kept me full till the evening! And the breakfast room is very beautiful and inviting.
Charismatic cat and dog round up the experience. Nothing to complain about
- Charles (9/5): Rob made our stay during Carnaval even more special - The proprietors are very focused on giving a good experience. I had a lot of trouble with the heat in Rio in mid-summer, but the air conditioning gave excellent respite. The bathroom facilities were kept very clean. Breakfast was good.
We took two all-day tours with Rob, one of the owners. He took us to the far west of Rio, and we had an opportunity to see natural habitats and cultural amenities and to dine on delicious seafood we would otherwise have missed. Don't miss the chance to taste moqueca de peixe - a wonderful fish stew.
The price was very reasonable, considering that it was Carnaval season. We had absolutely no problem getting to the property via taxis, which are abundant everywhere. When at the property, we mostly used Uber to go down the hill to various neighborhoods such as Lapa, Centro, Copacabana, Ipanema, and Jardim Botanico. On one occasion, we had to walk down. By using the staircases that Rob told us about, it was a much shorter walk than it otherwise would have been.
- Brigita (9/5): Superb - Very nice stay with incredible hosts, who made our explorance of Rio much easier. Highly recommended :)
