Guest Reviews
- Kathryn (6/5): we felt that the care factor from the hosts for their guests was low. - Our request for gluten free breakfast for one had been acknowledged by the property but we could not find any GF cereal or bread in the breakfast area.
The toilet seat was dangerously loose.
The property was not well sign-posted, making it more difficult to find.
- Robin (10/5): -
- Tanya (9/5): Beds were comfortable, communication with host was immediate and breakfast was great - The location was perfect for our attendance at a wedding at Mt Lofty. The Bush setting was beautiful to wake up to. It was a short drive to shops and pubs I was disappointed that heating was only available in the bedroom, but understand it will be extended to lounge and dining area
- Stefan Thomas (10/5): - Great thanks
- Carly-Jayne (3/5): -
- Dannielle (8/5): Excellent to rest & relax - It was just a perfect place to rest and recoup from work life and family life. We got to see a Koala in a tree right outside the door. The kookaburras laughing. Seen the dingoes and animals from the wildlife park next door. I think with a tidy up of the rubbish and cut back some bushes it would be even more magical.
- Tony (9/5): Restful and very enjoyable. - The serenity was outstanding, along with close access to the native animals contained in the adjoining fenced area. The continental breakfast was very good. The only downside to the retreat was availability to facilities i.e. shops, restaurants etc. That aside, I would strongly recommend staying at the Stringy Bark Retreat for a quiet and somewhat secluded accommodation.
- Michael (9/5): Peaceful - It was quiet with the only sounds being from nature. Location is excellent, 10 minutes from Hahndorf, 10-20 minutes to Adelaide Hills wineries, 30 to 40 minutes to Mclaren Vale wineries, Just over an hour to the Barossa Valley. Central too many artisan food makers including cheese makers.
- Portia (10/5): Fabulous stay for Tour Down Under - Didn't expect completely breakfast beautiful touch đ wonderful host June
- Marc (7/5): It turned out to be a lovely stay there with good facilities inside the house. - A very bushy country property with a quite steep driveway leading up to a standard shedding and bush paraphernalia surrounding a standard home, however, the inside has been beautifully decorated and setup as a B&B on the inside. It was a little difficult to find in the dark on the first night (our own fault for arriving late). I did book the room based on two single beds but when we arrived the two single beds were connected together and done up as a King size bed with no bedding available for the second bed when they were separated. Again, it was only a problem because we arrived late and then didnât want to disturb the owner, a lovely lady.
- Ken (9/5): We had a delightful stay with our hosts - lovely home in lovely bush setting - All good high standard Signage on main road needs relocation and a preliminary one too - as so easy to go past
- shirley (5/5): Lovely location but below our expectations. - The bush location is lovely and close to the hills attractions. Having a seperate entrance and a bbq was nice. I didnt like the fact the water is not filtered, am used to rain water tanks, but its advertised with a bath, but hey I couldnt get in that as the water is brown. The breakfast was not as described in the room ie fresh fruit -was a fruit processed container. I booked this and paid for breakast and the bath , so both those things disappointing. The rug in the room is dirty and in four nights we had no fresh towels.
- Dermott (10/5): - Everything, lovely host very welcoming and awesome place to stay Loved it all
- Julie (10/5): Beautiful relaxing get-away - Lovely room and facilities in a stunning location There wasn't anything I didn't like
- Peter (8/5): As described. Peaceful, well located forest retreat - Unobtrusively attentive hosts
Spacious rooms
Breakfast - Continental only ,
Koalas on Property, lovely to see
Next to a wildlife sanctuary- but very peaceful
Quaint towns nearby No Natural yoghurt in addition to the flavoured ones(first world problem!!)
Otherwise as described
- Sean (10/5): Picturesque location, perfect - Amazing Location, better than a Hotel, Motel.
Absolutely picturesque serenity.
The host was more than accomadating.
Breakfast was a nice homely gesture. Nothing.
- Kevin (7/5): Comfortable - Nice property in the Adelaide Hills Location
- Travis (6/5): -
- Susanne (10/5): Boutique-style accommodation in the bush - We loved the beautiful bush location and so close to what we wanted to visit in the Adelaide Hills. As is the case with many "boutique" places, there was way too much "decoration" on the surfaces. It looks nice, but we struggled to find room for our stuff.
- Dean H W (9/5): -
- Bj & Erika (7/5): - We lived the serenity. Being close to nature and the animals we were privileged to encounter Not having a nice warm shower.
- Michael (9/5): -
- Peter (8/5): - Nice unit, good bed, nice bathroom. Very nature driven location, animals, birds dingo's in the reserve next door. Not much not to like.
- M Marlene (10/5): Excelent short stay and would certainly return for a longer stay to enjoy Adelaide - Lovely location with really nice hosts which made our rushed stay feel relaxed.
We also had the freedom to move around at our leisure, and enjoy the location.
A lot of personal amenity we did not have time to use, so definatley going to return to this great location. Struggling to think of anything negative?
The home was clean, the hosts were professional and welcoming.
Our stay was toooo short! 2 days but i felt we could stay a week and feel right at home every day.
its not a hotel but a home.
- Lisa (10/5): Cute little stay.. - Room was comfortable and cute.. easily accessible. Private.
Being next to wildlife was nice.
Didn't use the bath/spa, but looked very tempting Really steep driveway was interesting..
- Jenkin (10/5): - Amazing property with beautiful views and kind hosts! Will be staying again
- Penelope (10/5): A nature lovers perfect retreat - Location and accommodation was ideal. Nothing
- Deyan (10/5): Very restful - Unique, quiet and spa bath Nothing
- Helen (9/5): Superb -
- Larraine (9/5): A comfortable stay with a relaxing outlook - The room was so pretty! The beds were comfy and we really liked having a pair of comfy lounge chairs as well as a table setting. It gave us options when it was gin & cheese time. Loved the bathroom with the sofa - I had a gastro bug & it gave me somewhere to relax a bit when I was up frequently in the night & not wake my travelling buddy. Loved the breakfast table & lounge and a good range of breakfast options. Though comfy, as twin beds they were quite narrow - we had a bit of fear of falling out when turning in the night.
If showering at night, it was very dark, as no light near the shower.
- Irena (1/5): Unhygienic and unapologetic - Good location. Continental breakfast included. 2 days before arrival, I'm advised I would not have use of the spa due to a drought, so the total cost was reduced by $30. I was upset. I don't like conflict.
I booked 2 nights in the spa room.
I left the next morning and sent a text message to the host, June.
I informed June I found hair left on the shower floor and provided pictures. You can see for yourself below. It was obvious the bathroom was not cleaned prior to my arrival. I also stated there was a thick layer of dust on tile edges. Soap scum visible on the tiles at the base of the shampoo bottles.
The bathroom mirror not clean. Spider webs on the ceiling. A bug in the spa. I'm not concerned about the bug. The body hair is proof enough to me the shower was not cleaned and therefore unhygienic. The room is fairly dim so I only noticed these signs once I put lights and heat lamps on that highlighted the neglect. In addition the debris on the edges of the flooring which showed no vacuum or mopping had taken place.
I asked for a partial refund for the first night and full refund for the second.
The host responded via text that I should have said something. Sorry that I felt that way. They live in the bush re the bug. Strongly denied the mirror was not clean. That's it.
Be aware it is not a unit. It is a room with ensuite at the rear of the host's home. The view from the bedroom window shows the outdoor garage with adjacent junk pile. Lots of scattered unloved pot plants.
A costly lesson learned. Read negative reviews first. I later learned others had also made similar comments on lack of cleanliness. It's expected. Should not have to be requested. I recall
on arrival the host informed me that a couple left without paying. In addition they had the audacity to comment they received no chocolates as was stated on the booking site. As the host said they have never offered chocolate. (see screenshot below)
Lack of clean drinking water. Water is derived from rainwater tanks that is tainted from tanin from surrounding foliage.
Hence why I was promptly asked for payment after an quick tour and obligatory chat.
- Shelton (9/5): We really enjoyed and relaxed whilst staying...the sounds of the nature was wonderful - Breakfast was self serve, but plenty to choose from Nothing
- Barry (8/5): A very quiet natural retreat - Exceptionally quiet with double glazing doors and windows. The view out onto the rustic bush garden was very calming. (See photo)
It borders the Worrowong Animal Sanctuary. We sited the dingoes, the Koalas were on our side in the garden trees.
The lounge dining room provides for quiet reading as well as a very welcome massage chair. You can eat in your own room or in the communal kitchen. Plenty of continental breakfast provisions, a good range of things.
It was good to meet June the Host and then left alone to have run of the place.
There was only two accommodation rooms so sharing the kitchen was very easy. Some old surplus to requirement equipment could be placed away from one view of the garden to make it aesthetically pleasing in all directions. Our side glass door and windows provided a very pleasing rustic landscape.
- Mike (10/5): Warm welcoming to jane and annes home in a perfect bush setting. Resident koala. - Very good Leaving this bush setting
- Helen (7/5): Comfortable - Very comfortable and much better inside than outside appearance When you drive in the actual property is very messy old caravan and rubbish we thought we had the wrong iplace
- Jeanette (9/5): Superb - Host helpfulness. Fridge needed to be cleaned.
- Robert (7/5): Very pleasant owner - Backed into the animal sanctuary outside needs a lot of work
Bed was very uncomfortable
- Jeff (10/5): Wild - Koalas in the garden. We had a lovely time in the Hills. Outside the house it's quite wild. Some may find it unkempt, but that's nature for yoy
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional - Quality home. Will appeal to nature lovers. Very peaceful.
- Preshena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mark (9/5): Will be going back. - The vibe was great and the room size was much bigger then expected I will be going back It was all a good time I dont have anything bad to say.
- Rob (10/5): Local cellar doors, platters for a late lunch, just perfect. - All we needed as far as the breakfast was concerned. More than we needed in fact.
Loved the koalas.
Loved the decor in the living area. Loved the massage chair.
The flat was roomy and power points appropriately positioned.
Shower and spa bath were fine.
Bed and sofa and table/chairs all good. I enjoyed the small verandah and glad we brought mozzie coils.
Host was very helpful regarding roads open/closed during the Tour Down Under bike race. We adjusted our planned local trips accordingly. Is there a better solution for cooling down in extreme heat? We were just comfortable, but hotter days would have been more difficult.
I put my mozzie coil on a brick but when I moved it realised that it was actually an ash tray and that many discarded butts fell through.
I would have liked to have had a manual for the massage chair controls.
- Natalie (6/5): More of an Ensuited Guest-room than a Queen Suite. - Large and comfortable bed. Well decorated and relatively clean room.
Tranquil location.
Host provided helpful advice regarding parking in nearby Hahndorf. I feel that there was some very creative advertising at play here. From the online description I had been expecting a more 'private' unit/suite with the listed amenities. What I got was a well decorated, ensuited (B&B style) guest room with half of the listed inclusions jammed in, and the other half in a communal living area. I had really been looking forward to the spa bath, but I could only get cold brown-tinted water out of the faucet (opted for a more water-efficient hot shower instead).
I had hoped to do some laundry during my stay, but no such facilities were available.
Didn't really feel I got value for money on this occasion.
- Alexandra (10/5): A wonderful secluded place to spend a quiet Christmas. - A wonderful place to spend a nice quiet Christmas. All the facilities great, shower and room was great and so wonderful to see dingoes emu and koalas. Highly recommend.
- Mali (9/5): Superb -
- Sean (7/5): Good -
- Peter (6/5): Wonderful wildlife, room for improvement at property. - Very quiet and peaceful location. Great opportunities to spot wildlife: koalas, wallabies, emu, dingoes etc Host(s) werenât there when we arrived. Luckily, other guests let us in and gave us an âinductionââŠ
Room quite cluttered with little space to unpack luggage.
The spa bath could have been a ânice touchâ but because the property seems to use rain water, the brown water in the tub wasnât overly attractiveâŠ
The outside area could do with some sorting out: lots of discarded items such as timber or pipesâŠ
- Niño (10/5): Amazing nature retreat to slow down from your busy life - I love how quiet it is that you really get a chance to commune with nature. It is also next to a wildlife sanctuary, our husky loved seeing the dingoes. It was perfect, June was so lovely and accommodating
- Trevor (8/5): Very good -
- Malcolm (9/5): Loved it and we will return - Excellent---both nothing
- Jason (6/5): Pleasant - Location was fantastic đ Bathroom was not clean and had to request it be cleaned before we could use it. Whole room was very dusty, my partner wrote on the mirror in the room, Please clean me, the dust was that thick. No granulated coffee, my partner found a small jar in the dining area, but noted it was set solid in the jar. So had to go to local cafes for morning coffee fix.
- Scarlett (10/5): Exceptional - Great host! Superb location and room. Quiet and secluded. Own entrance. Breakfast included.
- Jose (9/5): Superb -
- Damian (8/5): Very good -
- Deyan (10/5): Well rested, well fed and relaxed. - Great location, well appointed. Unique placement adjacent to sanctuary. Hostess was welcoming and made it clear she could be contacted if I needed anything.
- Lorraine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kerri (9/5): Superb -
- Matt (10/5): Great peaceful location, located very close to Between the Vines winery where I attended a wedding. -
- Ellie (9/5): Superb - Very welcoming host nice atmosphere
- Joanne (9/5): Great relaxing place to stay especially if you like the bush , wildlife and bird watching - The location was amazing. Lovely old world charm in the house . Very quiet and relaxing . Bathroom very spacious and modern. The outside area was a bit unkept. The shed opposite spoil the view but these things were not too concerning as it was a lovely stay
- Helen (8/5): Quiet location with very large room. Very private and comfortable. Close drive to Stirling for meals - Good size room and very comfy bed. Quiet location. Beware of the drive exiting onto road. Is on a bend and need to take caution.
- Greg (8/5): The Serenity - LOVED the peaceful surrounds and waking up to the sounds of dingoes howling and kookaburras laughing.
- Clint (9/5): Superb - Beautiful spot and facilities That weekend was very hot....would have enjoyed a ceiling fan
But unusually hot for the hills
- Kay (8/5): Very good - Lovely room, decent breakfast, friendly and helpful owners.
- Paul (8/5): Very nice and quiet - Peaceful
- Haynes (6/5): Pleasant -
- Law (9/5): Take the time to connect with nature. Stop and breathe in. - There were three koalas hanging out in the treetops of the driveway. The dingos next door did a little singing a couple times a day but it was peaceful and the hosts gave me space to be me and enjoy the solitude. The spa was a treat too. -
- Annette (10/5): Exceptional -
- Evan (10/5): Exceptional - We loved our time here. June greeted us warmly and showed us to our large and comfortable rooms. Being able to see gum trees outside our window was beautiful and seeing 3 koalas lazing in those gum trees was even better. It was so fantastic to have real milk for our caffeine hits and to eat the provided cereal/fruit/yoghurt and toast sitting on the deck, watching the birds. Highly recommended base for a wedding or exploring the area. The bed was a little hard for our taste - and everybody's taste is different.
- Udo (10/5): Exceptional - Very spacious accommodation, quiet bush setting. Breakfast provisions were varied and perfectly suitable.
- Virginia (8/5): A very gracious host, delightfully quiet with the opportunity to see wildlife. But you must have a car! - Quiet space, very large room with soaking tub bathroom. The Stringybark is adjacent to a wildlife sanctuary. Every morning kangaroos and emus came by. A koala lives in the trees on the property. Guests who plan to stay here MUST have a car! June offers breakfast but lunch/dinner are on your own. You cannot walk to town from here and there are no regular buses. June was gracious to drive me to a grocery store to pick up some provisions so we could have dinner in our room.
- Mrs (2/5): Unexpected as I use booking.com so many times , I should really be refunded my money - It's falsely advertised on booking.com, as the house is nexts to a animals sanctuary which any one could visit at any time , the rooms are part of their own house we wasn't informed when booking though booking.com it also included breakfast, and on arrival we was informed its continental breakfast which we normally very much enjoy , we where also informed wash your own dishes as they do not do it for us ,she got her money ASAP before we where told these details, breakfast was toast cereal and yougut portioned controled one for each guest , so when gone it was gone
My husband just wanted to go ,and book somewhere else but we just stayed out of the way in our room, our room had 2 towels , so as a woman I like to wash my hair so we had to buy extra towels, we had only one toilet roll so we are not going begging toilet paper so to the shop again,
my husband went to get some stuff from the car but couldn't get out so he went to the owners and they showed him how the key worked we realised then there was no fire doors
No risk assessment in place no fire signs no information on anything in the room my husband just wanted to leave we where there 4 days no clean towels no room cleaned no coffee or tea replaced in the room
I feel if you are advertising on booking.com, they should send in people in to check the property is up to standard as if this house goes up in fire who would be to blame
I am in the industry my self so I notice things very quickly, this was apparent I've got your money so get on with it ,it was a terrible stay I'm also disabled and lucky I have good and bad days and my husband was able to look after me , we will never stay in a place like that again I blame only ourselves we should have not payed until we saw what it was like Dirty unfit for travelers
Maybe drop the price and go for the back pack committee
But they still need risk assessment in place
- Andy (10/5): Nature lovers paradise - Absolute must for any nature lover
Accommodation is excellent, owners are great and friendly koalas, kangaroos, emuâs, potarooâs and a wild goose pay a visit every morning
A family of Koalas live in the front garden All good
- Nerellee (7/5): Nice room - Good facilities available in the room, nice and spacious. Liked that there was private door entrance other than through the house.
Beautiful nature right at your doorstep. Quiet a few spiderwebs through out the room, and felt the shower wasn't very clean.
- Madonna (8/5): This place is generally good value for money. The hosts are friendly and not invasive - Food supplied was fresh and varied. The shower had hair from previous customers, the toilet seat was broken
- Marion (7/5): Good -
- Paula (10/5): Exceptional - The breakfast supplied were plentiful, the beds were comfortable, room was spacious and clean, we were lucky enough to see koalas, hear kookaburras, heard the dingos howling next door, and beautiful bird life everywhere, fantastic place to stay. There was nothing that we didnt like
- Schiller (7/5): Good -
- Van (10/5): Would cone again. - Good selection for breakfast. Gorgeous location. Friendly host. Privacy. Lovely decor.
Exceeded expectations.
- Deirdre (9/5): peaceful, homely and friendly...very relaxing - Loved the atmosphere in the living area...old china, antique furniture etc. Hosts were very friendly and made us feel welcome but didn't intrude (they occupy rear part of house). Breakfast was DIY toast, cereals, yoghurt and fruit pots, juice and was fine. Room and bed comfortable. Very peaceful setting in natural bushland. If you're into manicured lawns, and orderly surroundings you might not appreciate so much. We found it beautiful. all good
- Jennifer (10/5): Exceptional -
- Allen (9/5): Very peaceful. - Breakfast ok location great wild life very cute and unexpected. Extremely pleasant hosts. Nothing.
- Nicole (10/5): Great location close to Mylor and Aldgate. Beautiful setting and home very comfortable. - Lovey stay! Thanks June Nothing, all lovely
- John (9/5): Great place to stay for work or holiday - Location and facilities were all of an excellent standard No negatives
- Dale (7/5): Very quiet relaxing location amongst the trees. - Very peaceful location very quiet. Very comfortable room and facilitates Breakfast very basic and supplies not topped up for the entire duration of stay. Missed out of desired breakfast on last 2 days. Dining area very cluttered. Over charged for stay. When checking original booking fee $707.85 charged $747.45???
I would not like to stay there during high fire danger period due to the extreme fire risk.
- Jamie (9/5): Superb -
- Mihai (10/5): Exceptional -
- Indranil (8/5): Enjoyable break away from the city noise - Quiet, tranquil surrounds. The room was large and well furnished.
- Anne (5/5): June was very welcoming. Breakfast was very well supplied, in another room and plenty of food and drink choices. - Beautiful surroundings, quiet place and peaceful inside Unfortunately I found the bed too hard but that is definitely personal preference.
Shower screen fell down and was of great concern to my husband.
Was not aware the breakfast time might be with other people. There were other guests but we did not see them.
- Claude (9/5): Fabulous will definitely be back again - Beautiful rural location Breakfast was lovely and included use of the lovely lounge area
Lovely location close to other beautiful towns Little difficult at night as long driveway and quite dark to find late at night
- Peter (8/5): Very good - Awesome location, backs up onto a wildlife reserve so can see the dingos from out the front. Spa bath was awesome, water pressure was abit low but was pretty good considering its all run off water tanks. Massage chair was amazing, owners were very polite, would definitely recommend visiting if going on holidays in the Adelaide Hills. Towels could've been swapped out after a few days, breakfast area was quite nice but abit too much put into that area.
- Bronwyn (9/5): Superb -
- Toby (8/5): a cosy couple of nights, a great base to explore the region. - well thought out rooms, great nature filled location!
- Kathryn (7/5): Good - Value for money. Comfortable and very clean
- Dean (7/5): Quite good and relaxing. - Good To have a clean shower and spar.
- Lisa (9/5): Superb - Great location, friendly hosts, loved the fireplace and comfy furniture in the lounge room!
- Robert (10/5): quiet relaxation - the quietness and bush setting nothing
- Michelle (9/5): it was a great stay - quiet. aust bush setting on tank water. I also like a hot breakfast
- Craig (8/5): we had a peaceful sleep and enjoyed the homely feel - The property was decorated nicely. The host had warmed our room before arrival which made the room feel cosy. The decor in the room was very traditional and added character to the space. we would have liked more butter on the table.
- Yvette (4/5): missed some low hanging fruit. simple things that should have worked didnât and I thought the host could have been more - aesthetically not really my style but a quaint cottage style which worked well with the rest of the property many of the âfacilitiesâ had issues. the coffee pod machine in the room did not work. The heater, kettle and fridge were all connected to a PowerPoint which stopped working on a cold evening. I only discovered on exiting the following morning that the fridge Yass ceased and it had medication in it requiring refrigeration. the coffee machine in the dining room also didnât work and the fresh fruit and natural yogurt for breakfast turned out to be a plastic fruit tub with a yoplait. I think there were some low hanging fruit that missed the mark. a general tidy up of the entrance drive way and parking area would serve them well. you currently look into an open shed storage area with yard rubbish and collateral.
I didnât find the host responsive at all despite enquiring and requesting assistance to the issues. if this was an air bnb where I wished to stay tucked away, maybe, but I suppose the host at it was presented online didnât translate to me experience in n the ground.
