Guest Reviews
- Kirsten (1/5): Don't be fooled by the photos-Terrible location - Don't be fooled. It looks like a cute winery that makes vinegar but it's a warehouse. Toilet is in the middle of your room no doors so you are doing your business all together..Maybe the famous architect could have designed a wall and door. No one was at the property other than 2 people rolling around on the floor in a room next to the patio. Location is very sketchy to say the least. We had been in downtown Vienna felt completely safe this was not that, we would NOT have gone out at night. No cool wine barrels or vats of vinegar as pictured. The photos make it look so cool. But the reality is very different. Yes there are homemade beds and vanities and brick walls, and doors have numbers drawn on in pencil. It was dark and creepy we felt completely isolated. We left and got a different place to stay.
- Tobias (10/5): - Tolles Ambiente!
- Leszek (8/5): -
- NICOLAS (8/5): très bon sejour - Endroit atypique
- Sergi (10/5): Una estància diferent i molt agradable. - L’ambient en general
- Kerstin (10/5): -
- Claudia (9/5): Wir kommen immer gerne wieder!
- Thomas (9/5): - The most unique hotel in which I have ever stayed. Both modern and rustic at the same time. Charming and helpful hosts. Felt more like staying in a bed and breakfast than in a hotel. The breakast itself was delicious and a lot of fun to chat with the other guests as it was served in a communal setting. If you are in a hurry, though, it might be a challenge. Perhaps the hosts can ask if their guests are in a rush to avoid any awkward situations.

- Laia (10/5): - Esmorzar molt bo i les instal.lacions i el tracte humà.

Rien
- Giacomo (10/5): - Posto stupendo, personale super cordiale

- Esa1978 (10/5): - Exceptional, unique place, very pleasant owners. Extremely delicious breakfast! Can't squeeze in so small text area all the little details which made this place unforgettable.
- Alison (10/5): - It's a unique and comfortable place to stay - very different than an average hotel. I enjoyed the uniqueness of the space because they obviously thought about the details of the design. The hosts are also friendly and helpful. I was very comfortable in a single room. The mattress was firm and and I slept well each night. There was air conditioning, but I didn't need it.
The bathroom is definitely different and probably isn't for everyone. But once I read the instructions and experimented with the water temperature, it worked perfectly for me.
The breakfasts were a highlight for me. I decided to skip the morning sessions of a conference so I could relax and enjoy each morning I was there. The food was delicious - fresh eggs from the chickens on the premises, a selection of yummy cheeses, fresh homemade bread, fresh fruit, homemade granola, fresh grape juices, freshly brewed coffee, etc.
I wish I'd had time to enjoy the outdoor terrace and other amenities. I hope to return again.
- Tomaž (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amina (10/5): A peaceful, inspiring, and refreshing experience. - The design and concept of the place are truly unique and thoughtful. The bed was large and extremely comfortable, and everything was spotless and well-maintained. Breakfast was simple yet absolutely delicious—just right. The hosts were incredibly warm and welcoming. Honestly, I loved the overall concept and the story behind it. The charm lies in its simplicity and authenticity. It’s a deeply inspiring place where sustainability isn’t just a feature—it’s clearly a heartfelt mission.
- Luca (10/5): 5 stars - We had a wonderful stay here. We booked one double room and one single, both were beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was delightful, with many homemade products. Daniela was such a lovely host and truly took the experience to another level.
- Sandra (9/5): Superb -
- Michal (10/5): It's a nonstandard hotel, which works for me - Breakfast is amazing (yet simple, mind you; which is a good thing). For me it's all good, but it makes sense to realize it's not your regular chain hotel. You spend a lot of time and water to adjust the temperature of the shower, so this may be a bit counterproductive. You have to read the descriptions carefully, not everyone likes to stomp on a rough grid when showering etc.
- Sophia (9/5): Superb -
- Aurelia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Agathe (10/5): Exceptional - extraordinary good homemade bread for example
- Alina (10/5): Exceptional -
- William (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nikita (10/5): Exceptional - It is an enjoyable experience with the soul in place. Some might find it lacks convenience in facilities (just a few, usual for big hotels and not needed here), but it is functional, and hospitality characterizes this place.
And breakfast is certainly worth mentioning, as it is made from fresh products that owners use in their product business.
I recommend trying for people who like places with their own unique vibe.
- Tania (10/5): Wonderful - From walking in the door and being greeted by Danielle and Herman we knew that we had made the right choice . If you want something a bit different this is the place for you. Nothing corporate here ! You have the personal touch from Daniella and Maria who went out of their way to make you feel comfortable and rwlaxed .Enjoyed the food and drink on offer most of which was home made 🙂.The room was a one off.Different ,quirky and comfy. The bed is the best I've ever slept in ! The room was obviously designed with love . No TV but that added to the atmosphere . We felt so relaxed and slept very well. 10 -15 mun walk from the main station and 5 mins walk to a main tram station which took us everywhere we needed to be.Couple of bars and lots of shops near the tram station. We had a wonderful time and didn't want to leave .We would definitely stay again if back in Vienna Nothing
- Monika (9/5): Superb - Very nice owners, tasty breakfast and coffe, original design and unique place Ok
- Deepti (10/5): Cottage Core meets Industrial Chic - The hotel is easily accessible through public transport and is located at central location. The establishment has a very cosy and welcoming energy. The owners - Erwin and Daniela were very helpful and pleasent. The breakfast is not a grand bouquet of varied cuisines, but everyday a specially curated dish is served. Freshly baked rye bread, butter from the alps, home-grown honey, fruit jam, seasonal fruits, cherry tomatoes, grape juice, and a curated collection of green tea & coffee is available everyday. It was lovely to interact with other guests on the breakfast table. Daniela was exceptionally helpful in suggesting some authentic Viennese activities to make my trip even more memorable.
- Iveta (10/5): Exceptional -
(9/5): Out of the box accommodation with super kind hosts - The hosts were extremely nice. There was a family vibe at breakfast. It is not the usual hotel but it is very creative and we had a good time.
- James (10/5): We enjoyed an interesting and comfortable stay at the Wiener Gäste Zimmer in Vienna. The space was originally a brewery, - Excellent quality and hospitality.
- Serena (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts are wonderful. The rooms are quirky and the beds are comfortable. This hotel isn't for everyone! Have a look at the pictures before you book.
- Helen (10/5): Wow ! Fun and exceptional - Very quirky and fun design in the room. Lovely terrace and pool, suna area. Saw the chickens and had fresh eggs for breakfast. All the breakfast foods were made by the hotel owners and all wholesome and very delicious. The owner and her staff were very friendly and caring and made my stay and breakfast very special. Thank you for the suprise champagne too! Not applicable everything was wonderful
- Karl (8/5): Overall, I really enjoyed my stay and would recommend this property. - The property was quirky and the staff were very friendly and helpful. It was noisy one morning because of a delivery.
- Emma (8/5): Hard bed so didn’t sleep. Great host and building. - Nearly everything was incredible. Super host, incredible building, really interesting history. The bed was so hard we didn’t sleep.
- Jürgen (8/5): Very good -
- Tamara (10/5): Exceptional - Daniella and Edwin were perfect hosts. The vinegar factory/beer/coffee roasting tour was fantastic They have great coffee and homemade breakfast. Daniella gave great directions and recommendations for things to do locally. Definitely an experience you will remember! Advise using slippers in the shower
- Carmenza (10/5): The owners, the breakfast and the strategic location and the tour would be reasons for us to return - Its quirkiness, cleanliness, quietness Glass bottles in the shower. Should not advertise a pool if it is not available to guests.
- Patrik (5/5): Passable - Special building Breakfast only from 8. No drain from basin. Toilet couldn't be flushed.
- Moraru (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lisa (9/5): If you like accomodations that feel like an "experience", this place is for you. - This is a unique place with an incredibly kind and helpful host. I really appreciated her tip about using Tram D to get around the city... it was a direct connection to the Hauptbanhoff and the Belvedere, it went approximately halfway around the ring, and was much more pleasant and scenic than taking the metro. I'm not very tall or agile, so I found the bed in my single room uncomfortable to get in and out of. But this small detail wouldn't discourage me from staying here again. :)
- Andreea (7/5): Good - It’s unique design was out of the extraordinary. The host was very kind and gifts received were appreciated. Thank you! The noise that was heard from the other rooms and the hall was disturbing. Also the toilet window and position in the room can create discomfort.
- Graham (9/5): Absolutely wonderful - It’s quite unique and a fascinating place to stay. Daniela is the perfect host ably assisted by the wonderful Maria. The breakfasts are superb as is the service. Can’t think of anything
- Thomas (10/5): Our host is amazing!!! - Daniella is a great host and makes a wonderful breakfast! The bed was little hard
- Michelle (8/5): Very good -
- Herbert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Collyer (10/5): Exceptional - Unique experience. Great hosts. Great breakfast. Nothing
- Neil (10/5): Relaxing stay in a great place - Breakfast was good. Freshly made for us. The staff member was so helpful and welcoming. I liked the whole experience
- Diana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daniel (10/5): For those who value creativity - The rooms were super creative. It’s a place for those who want to have a different experience. The hosts were also super nice and friendly :) Close to the train and subway stations.
- Zil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lee (9/5): The hospitality of the owners and staff make this place extra special, strongly recommend - Very unusual property in a working vinegar factory - the rooms are spacious and comfortable and carefully designed. The shared breakfast area is cosy and welcoming. The tour of the vinegar factory is a highlight, as are the big fluffy chickens and home cooked breakfast. The hosts are committed to making your stay as enjoyable able as possible. -
- Soma (7/5): Good - the hosts, esp. Daniella is really nice and warm.
The property looks very design forward The rooms and facilities could be more user friendly. Even minor tweaks like having a shower head, a better feet placement for the shower, the bed height so it protects the knees from the wooden beams, etc. can go a long way
- Yasushi (5/5): Passable -
- Patricia (9/5): Perfect hostess and very pleasant experience. Would definitely revisit - Very good choice of breakfast. There was a lot of character at the property. If you want something different this is the place to visit. I was not sure initially when we arrived that we were at the correct place as it did not look like a hotel at all but it ended up being a fantastic venue. N/A
- Alexandra (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jacob (10/5): Unique hotel, in a great location and with a wonderful staff. - Wonderful hotel, close to the hauptbahnhof, metro, and tram stops, with interesting rooms, lovely staff, and a nice pool. The shop is fascinating too, with all sorts of unique oils and vinegars. Our room was spotless, very quiet, and well air-conditioned despite the 36° weather! The team were friendly, put on a lovely breakfast, offered useful advice, and were very accommodating of our late arrival. One of the nicest stays we've had, and somewhere we look forward to staying again. Nothing, our stay was as close to perfect as humanly possible.
- Qian (1/5): A nightmare - The swimming pool Concrete hard bed; terrible homemade breakfast; the shower is a torture;
The place is not for people who like to have a comfort bed, a nice shower, or a taste breakfast. The bed is a 8cm hard mattress on solid wood, it would not change any shape with your body, but your body needs to adjust to it, it’s like sleep on concrete.
When you shower, you will stand on a piece of construction metal frame, it hurts your feet so badly. The shower has no shower head, which means the water will fall hard on you, and you are surrounded by shower curtain. It is not over, when you finished the shower, the whole entrance/toilet/shower area is totally wet and really slippery due to the polished floor, so you can fall down, and by any bad luck you fall on the 1.4X2.4meter mirror, which is not fixed on the wall, you will end up in hospital. And you probably still need to pay for repairing that mirror. The breakfast is the poorest you can image, see the photo, 2 slice of bread, 2 type of cheese, 1 type of jam. That’s it! Oh I forgot you can add an egg. The staff is so horrible, one morning the bread is burned, we asked the staff to change it. She said it was only a bit burned and it was included in the room fee.
Oh I forgot, it is not possible to sleep one night in this place without banging on your leg or your head, the bed is surrounded by wooden beam, after banging your leg about 2-3 times you will remember to climb on the bed with both your hand and feet. If you haven’t banged your leg on the bed frame, don’t worry, there are wooden frame sticking out everywhere in the room, you will trap on one of them. Your head will probably get hurt either by the metal chain hanging in the space, or by the water pipe of shower when you are standing in front of the mirror.
You will not find anything you can sit on in the whole room, I mean sitting comfortably, of course you can sit anywhere on those wooden beams.
- Ag (9/5): excellent if you need to stay in this area - super original, small, excellent service too hard bed, not clean under the bed
- Anca (9/5): Superb -
- Elaine (8/5): Very good -
- Carol (10/5): You will never have stayed in a place like this - highly recommend you do! - From the outside, you wouldn’t guess how interesting and creative a place this is. If you are looking for unique, natural, reasonably priced but high quality accommodation in Vienna, look no further. It’s walking distance from the central railway station and there’s a metro stop nearby. Public transport in Vienna is so cheap & easy to get around.
The architect designed rooms are rustic and industrial but luxurious at the same time - from the super comfortable bed, double sink / dressing area & gowns to the multi-function toilet with heated seat! We didn’t use the pool or sauna but it was a great space. We did enjoy the hammocks though with a beer or two, surrounded by plants and vegetables, hens, beehives and vinegar barrels and just soaked up the unique atmosphere.
The breakfast, cooked by Steffi, was simple and high quality with the best ingredients, including home-made bread and delicious crispy bacon omelette made with eggs from the resident hens.
Do a web search for the Gegenbauer origins, in particular Erwin - from pickle factory inheritor to master of vinegar and much much more. It’s a fascinating story. You will see him busying about in the production area and shop as well as his lovely wife Daniela, who is equally talented and so kind, accommodating and keen to give you all the information you need to make your stay a memorable one. They both speak excellent English and other languages.
We have just returned from travelling round Europe for 3 months and this was the most unusual, relaxed, friendly and memorable place we stayed in. Only that we didn’t stay longer!
- Michelle (8/5): Very good -
- Marius (10/5): Exceptional - An experience to be remembered. I can only confirm all the positive things already stated about this accommodation. Many thanks and appreciation to our host.
- Sascha (10/5): amazing location in a very cool building - very interesting rooms, amazing breakfast, amazing staff the shower was a bit hard to get right. and sometimes the water temperature would suddenly spike or drop, without us having changed anything.
- Andreas (10/5): A really unique and special stay with hosts who love what they do with a burning passion! - This is such a unique place! Everything was done with so much thought, creativity and passion. It's a family-run hotel where you'll get exactly the kind of treatment you'd expect from a family run place - the hosts are unbelievably nice, accommodating and generous. We got what we needed and much more! If you're someone interested in architecture and interior design this place is really fun to check out - they even have a booklet from the architects' about the design of the interiors. The pool/sauna area is 60s interior dream! Everything was perfect!
- Laine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Angelika (10/5): What an adventure! I am so glad I found this gem as I don't like boring chain hotels ever! - The breakfast was delicious, mainly of organic, local and environmental friendly ingredients; the bread is homemade and fresh. It is a very unusual, well thought through sustainable family business in a factory. As a guest you are actually invited to be part of the family if you care to engage. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and the friendliness and I felt very much at home.
Chickens live in the roof garden which is created with recycled barrels from the factory; the industrial look of the rooms combined with organic and industrial materials, the rough, ecologically, forward thinking architecture are magnificent. Living in this place felt like connecting with your essential needs; natural food, a small sauna and pool, a kitchen with a big table shared with the guests and interesting conversations. Passing bye I would have never expected a magic place like this behind an ordinary façade of a refurbished canning factory.
Also interesting is that the space has become an organically organised living and working space as there is still an active vinegar production and a shop integrated in a property which goes back generations. It shows a way forward how to live sustainably in an urban environment.
Apart from being a fascinating place it is also good for sightseeing - it is a 10 minutes walk to the Underground - which takes you to the city centre in 10 minutes and allows to connect with architecture new and old, art and music and cultural events. If you love nature - Vienna Woods are only 30 minutes away from the centre and many other possibilities available - just ask the owners how to avoid the tourist trap! Only little things - and I am sure the owners are interested in that as well! In my room (single) I missed a small table and a comfy chair to read in. Also, being a 72 year old I found the self switching off lights on the stairs good but the intervals too short to get to the top, especially when I was not familiar with the place when arrived. But that's about it really. If you are in need of a lift you ought to contact the owners in advance.
- Jan (9/5): Highly recommend - I would highly recommend: we had a superb stay. It is located a bit outside the city center, but is easily accessible by the great public transport in Vienna. The rooms are unique and pleasantly designed. Breakfast is superb and consist of homemade artisanal products. Hosts deserve a thumbs up for being great help during our stay. So if you want a quality experience instead of just another hotel, this place should be on the top your list. Nothing.
- Vladimir (10/5): Exceptional -
- Annemarie (10/5): Great place with amazing hosts. - The hosts, the place, the breakfast
- Markus (10/5): Incredibe!!! One of the best places we stayed at ever!! The sauna is amazing rooms are lovely. We even got a private tou - amazing rooms, the family running the place is really lovely as well amazing sauna nothing this place was 10/10
- Lisa (10/5): Amazing hotel, friendly hosts and delicious breakfast! - Great location within walking distance of the tube station. We stayed in the hay room which was so cozy and quirky. The hosts were lovely, very friendly and gave us lots of tips and recommendations about the best places to visit/eat etc. The breakfast was delicious, especially their own roasted coffee, home baked Sourdough and the homemade granola. It was lovely to meet the other guests too at the shared table. Also loved seeing the chickens on the terrace! We will definitely be back and highly recommend this hotel. nothing
- Cezary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Linda (10/5): Exceptional - We loved everything about the place!!! The bed was incredible comfy, pool room spectacular, spacious, green groving around and chickens and the rooster! Lovely interior design and touch of beautiful art and history! Little cottage in the middle of the town.
Strew smells amazing!
Good vibes, fun, cool stuff super helpful! Just the shower head
- Roseanne (10/5): stay here for a unique and memorable experience that is exceptional value - One of the most interesting, different and fun places we have ever stayed (4 couples). We stayed in the straw rooms which are completely unique and cosy. Amongst the rustic and industrial heritage there are super luxuries - bathrobes, gorgeous toiletries and amazing showers and loos! The owners couldn’t do more for us. Breakfast of their own produce was amazing, the brewery fascinating and we were so welcome. We even had a dip in the pool and sauna. Highly recommend - we are used to 4 and 5 star hotels but this was one of our most wonderful and memorable trips. Tiny niggles only. The straw rooms aren’t great soundproofing and showers (which are lovely and hot and powerful) do take some controlling! The guest house is not entirely central but easy access to City Centre by cab or public transport.
