Guest Reviews
- Clara (9/5): - The overall stay is great! Loved the location in nature and so many trails to hike. The breakfast was great! The host is really nice and helpful.
Just remember that it gets colder here at night.
- Carlos (10/5): -
- Lucia (10/5): -
- Thomas (8/5): - Very friendly staff.
The night was not that cold as I expected.
Of course when you come from the beach it is a shock. The breakfast "scrambled eggs and gallo pinto" was cooked with pork oil which gave the food a very unpleasant flavour.
A bit noisy due to the trucks passing on the road.
- Emily (8/5): - Incredibly welcoming host who offered us dinner when we arrived in the evening. Nice walks through the forest nearby. Ideal location as a stop off when crossing the mountain. Bathroom is basic

- Monika (4/5): - The area is beautiful. The trail near the huts is lovely. Unfortunately, the place doesn't have a hostel atmosphere. We felt uncomfortable in the kitchen. It's terribly cold at night. There's no hot water after showering. The price-to-quality ratio is poor. Accommodation is expensive and the quality is poor.
Nada
- Andres (8/5): -
- Maria (9/5): -
- matthew (9/5): Enjoyed it! - I enjoyed the cool weather and beautiful surroundings. It was great
- Nadine (9/5): - Einfache Unterkunft, sehr autentisch.
- Obando (8/5): -
- Wouter (10/5): I absolutely loved the tracks, they were beautifully maintained and full of stunning views. - I had the most wonderful stay at this lodge in Costa Rica! From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with genuine warmth and hospitality. The location is absolutely breathtaking, nestled in nature with incredible views of the rainforest and wildlife right outside your window. Each morning I woke up to the sounds of birds, which made the experience feel magical and truly connected to nature. The food was another highlight. Fresh, flavorful, and made with locally sourced ingredients.
- Trindl (10/5): A genuine slice of Costa Rica with amazing views, loci by with nature and incredibly welcoming hosts. - It felt so removed from civilization. A beautiful setting with a view above the trees while in the amazing forest. It is rustic which might not be for everyone. I loved that a huge beautiful moth came into the lodge for a visit. The road is still close so we could still hear the air breaks of the big trucks every once in a while.
- Jana (9/5): Beautiful premises in the cloud forest - Beautiful decoration, table tenis, paths in the woods. We were almost alone there It would be interesting to see it in the main season and meeting other travellers loving nature and spirituality. Helpful staff. That' s a pity we didnt meet the owner as he has Czech origin. In the rain season it was rather cold ať night. I believe in the hot months it must be great. A bit hard to find without a car because booking shows another location in the map.
- Daniela (10/5): Incredible! - The bed & breakfast is in the cloud forest and there are many well marked hiking trails, color-coded by difficulty, accessible in front of the property. We had arrived early evening when it was cooling down and Bedrich had a warm fire burning in the common living area. This place is very cozy and the beds are comfortable. The breakfast and coffee were delicious. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. This is a great place to get away from it all and immerse yourself in nature.
- Lisa (8/5): Very good -
- Barry (8/5): Very good -
- Luana (10/5): Exceptional - We stayed for one night and it was perfect. Cozy Hostel right by the street but you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. The staff is very friendly and made us some nice dinner and breakfast. Would definitely recommend.
- B. (6/5): Pleasant -
- Martin303 (8/5): Awesome wooden shack in the Costa Rican hills - It's a wooden shack on 2850m. In the evening it can get chilly. There is a fireplace in the main room by the bedrooms, just need to make sure you have the wood. The host is a cool guy, prepares the breakfast in the morning. I only had a quick stay, but the property with the land is big, and there are hiking trails around.
- Matt (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jp (9/5): Superb - It's a super remote cabin in the mountains with not much else around, so perfect for enjoying the phenomenal views. Bedrich and the staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. There are also trails around which we were unfortunately not able to explore due to our time constraints but are surly worth a hike. All in all a great place to stay.
- Melanie (9/5): Superb -
- Lucie (8/5): Very good - Beautiful cosy place near the forest. Nice welcoming hosts and very good food. Cold
- Tamás (7/5): Good - The forest starts literally outside the door. The trails are varied, some of them are challenging (in a positive way). The pancakes for breakfast were delicious. The main building is all made of wood, it had a great ambience. The fireplace really set the mood in the evening. I couldn’t get the water heater to work so I had to shower in ice cold water. The smoke from the fireplace rose to the attic rooms. No card payment option.
- Amy (9/5): Superb -
- Alison (10/5): Amazing Ecolodge, lots of games to keep our boy entertained and walks with authentic charm and great staff. Also catered - Lots of games to keep our boy entertained and walks, great staff. Nothing
- Melanie (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful place in a perfect location for some quiet days. Lovely and helpful staff, delicious breakfast with a view. Hiking trails starting directly in front of the house. Lots of birds around. /
- Cinzia (7/5): Spectacular nature! - The nature around is spectacular.
If you are available to stay in a very basic place it’s fine. Just mind it can be very cold and wet! The noise of trucks from the main road, we didn’t expect it to be so close!
- Bachmann (10/5): Highland Nourishment - Iyok Ami was a lovely spot to be embraced by the highlands. The well marked and cared for trail system revealed some of the most subtle magic and nourishment from the earth I found while in Costa Rica. I received community, conversation, and connection here. Bring warm clothes for this stay. The food was delicious. There was nothing I didn't enjoy.
- Melanie (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful place. Perfect for some quiet and peaceful days in the mountains. Hiking trails with lots of birds starting right in front of the house.
Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. /
- Robert (8/5): Very characterful. - Brilliant location in the cloud forest. Very basic facilities but friendly. No English spoken. Too cold.
- Cathy (10/5): The best place to stay in Costa Rica! - This place is a gem: a wonderful eco-lodge in the midst of primary rainforest. You can trek straight out of the lodge along several trails, or sit with a coffee watching the hummingbirds. A highlight for us was seeing the resplendent quetzal from the lodge. The food is fantastic, freshly cooked and super healthy. The owner Berdich took us on a walk and pointed out the birds and plants; he is super knowledgeable and passionate about the environment. I can't recommend this place highly enough, it's a gem. We arrived by bus; it's 200m walk from the bus stop. Nothing. It gets cold but our room had cosy blankets so all good 😊
- Edwin (7/5): Good -
- Eduardo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maarten (10/5): Exceptional -
- Norene (8/5): We enjoyed the cozy hostel environment and the scenic nature trails. - The staff was friendly. We liked the hiking trails. The fireplace upstairs was cozy. The breakfast was very good. The extra blankets were appreciated. Low flow shower and bathroom faucet.
- Heilig (3/5): Too basic, expansive, extremely poor breakfast, - Half way fro Cartago to Dominican Too basic and should charge half the price. We stayed in a wonderful hotel in Dominican for almost the same price.
Patrick was extremely nice and waited us for a late check in - thank you
- Itay (1/5): Disappointing accommodation - After three wonderful weeks exploring Costa Rica, our family was disappointed by this particular accommodation. We arrived tired after a long drive, hoping for a hot shower, only to find no dry towels available. Additionally, breakfast was not provided as expected, despite us leaving during the stated serving hours. For families seeking a comfortable and enjoyable stay, we would not recommend this place.
- Alberto (10/5): A very nice stay in a cozy little country house with beautiful birds and nature. - The person who was in charge during our stay was very kind and helpful. The place is far away from city, restaurants, markets and things like that, so plates for dinner or breakfast are not varied, but food was very good, They cultivate their own organic vegetables and trout is cultured nearby by neighboring local trout producers. The place is a very cozy little country house, we like to be in cold places, but inside the atmosphere was very comfortable. Birds you can see through the wide windows early in the morning while you are having a delicious coffee with your breakfast are a priceless gift of nature. All was ok.
- Blanca (8/5): Comfy beautiful spot - Beautiful surroundings, they have trails inside the property that are even better that the Quetzales national park.
The place was comfortable and welcoming and we immediately felt at home. It's was a bit too close to the road and there was a lot of noise from the traffic during the day, although at night it was very quiet.
- Christof (7/5): Nice overnight stop at Quezales NP - Nicely located in the woods. Trails directly starting from the house. Main road is noisy at night. Needs some repairs especially in the bathroom.
- Gabriella (9/5): Simple and pleasant accommodation with friendly host, great hiking trails in cloud forest - Simple accommodation with a family who, in addition to their house with rooms, also offer other smaller huts with accommodation. Our accommodation was simple, functional but very pleasant. There are enough blankets for the night when the temperatures drop. The owners offer lunch, dinner and breakfast.
From the accommodation, there are various hiking trails of different lengths and levels of difficulty into the cloud forest. The vegetation in this cloud forest is breathtaking. It is definitely worth making a stopover here. -
- Krista (8/5): Very good - Just incredible. We had dinner there each night, which was always a delicious home-cooked meal, and breakfast was eggs or pancakes depending on the day. Best part is a pair of quetzals in the trees during breakfast, just amazing. The hosts we met on arrival did not speak English, so this may be an issue for some travellers, but luckily my Spanish lessons were good enough, and my husband had no trouble using a translation app if he needed to! The trails were just astounding, and as good (if not better) than the nearby national park. Our main issue was that I booked a room with private bathroom, and the bathroom was down the stairs through a shared living space. This was very awkward for us, but was made up for by the location and staff.
- Jessica (9/5): Lovely escape to mountains and nature - Wonderful! - like living in someone's mountain lodge high in the forest for a while. I loved the house and the cosy little rooms. There was a view of Volcan Poas (erupting!) and it was great to have short trails available leading right out of the garden, The food was good, the people were kind, it is accessible by bus from a stop about 5 minutes walk down the highway, and it is especially great if you have a car because you can access the different parks nearby. I'll definitely come back. Yes it is cold at night!
- Nadège (8/5): Perfect to chill out and enjoy nature - The location is just amazing. Being able to observe wildlife from Iyok Ami is such a bonus (no need to go to the national park). You can take a walk (they have various paths) or just do it from inside. The nature there is breathtaking.
Flori and Lucrecia are very sweet and prepare healthy meals for those who don't want to live the place.
Good wifi and hot water are available.
And a fireplace if the place turns too cold :) Travelling by bus can be a bit tricky to access Iyok Ami (but that's part of its charm)
- Jessica (10/5): A Perfect Mountain Retreat - This is a lovely chance to be in the forest high in the hills - in a charming wooden house with some beautiful views: I could see right to Turrialba and Poas vocanos from my room. I liked the wooden lodge architecture and the common area for working and chatting, with good wifi, and great homemade food from Shirley for dinner. The land is great offering a chance to do short but interesting hikes into the raw forest from the house. Yes it gets cold, but heaters are provided. And - travelling by bus - it's not hard to get the buses to drop off and pick up nearby. Perfect!
- Marek (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steve (9/5): Very nice quaint/rustic place. - Quaint, rustic lodging with their own large pretexts area. They have a system of trails for fit hikers. Very eco-conscious. Very nice staff/owners.
- Marcela (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mary (9/5): Excellent stay - The trails on the property were excellent, offering good views and enjoyable hikes. Lots of birds around the property, we heard the quetzals but unfortunately we did not see them. The owner was incredibly friendly and engaging, making our experience even more delightful. Additionally, the food served was good. The shower was hard to open and the head is positioned quite high, the water pressure was also low. The weather was cold that night, which made for a rather uncomfortable showering experience. We used the shower for the other room the next morning and it was much better.
- Elodie (9/5): Superb - The view is incredible , the trails really nice to hike For people who don't have a car: bring your food and enough cash to pay the bill (a casado is 6000c).
- Kathryn (7/5): Good - The view was excellent, the food good. The shower didn't work
- Martin (10/5): Exceptional - After over a month in Costa Rica, Iyok Ami is definetely the nicest place I've been to. Everyone is extremely lovely and caring. Food is really great. The hostel has a trail systems that is worth exploring, and Quetzals can be seen from the living room.
It can get cold at night, but with such human warmth and a few blankets, nothing to worry about.
I couldn't recommend more staying here !!
- Eduardo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Qma (7/5): Good location - The location is perfect for visiting Paraiso Lodge and the NP Quetzales. It has resident quetzal. The cook/ housekeeper was very nice. The room with private bath is the best to Stat. The steep stairs that lead to the bedroom upstairs. The shared bathroom is located downstairs.
- Ling (9/5): Superb -
- Nanette (8/5): Breathtaking beauty and super staff - The location is breathtaking and the staff could not have been nicer. We were surrounded by nature at its best and the walking trails surrounding the property gave us the opportunity view and photograph the local flora and fauna. The evening meal and breakfast were both delicious and this place offers tremendous value for money. It was an unforgettable experience and one we will treasure. Struggled to sleep under the weight of the blankets needed to keep the cold out. I had to visit the bathroom a couple of times in the night and although I knew it wasn't en suite, I hadn't considered that it might be downstairs.
- Amy (9/5): Really really unique and interesting. - Shirley is a rock star. The food was delicious. This is a creative persons dream. Loved it. It’s a wonderfully creative and interesting place. I loved it.
- Walasek (9/5): Rustic beauty - Hiking and rustic with a hot shower and ping pong!! Shirley was incredible - kind and helpful in every way! Dining area was too cold
- Julia (10/5): Would come back - Beautiful seeing. Amazing forst trails Beside the main hwy, a bit of trucking noise but it not ongoing
- Anthony (10/5): A peaceful bubble lost in the Quetzal’s forest - We planned to visit the Quetzal National Park but instead we booked 2 nights in Iyok Ami, like a friend of us recommend it too us. And the least I can say is that we weren’t disappointed !
The place is situated close to the road, 10 mins away (by car) from the Quetzal National Park entrance. The first thing we noticed when we arrived is the silence. It’s so quiet and peaceful ! The hostel is mainly made in wood. Because it’s fresh outside (don’t forget you are in altitude in a cloudy forest) on evening Bedrich make fire. The rooms are super cosy and very confortable. But the main thing about this place is the fact that you have access to more than 5km of trail which is why we came and stayed there instead going in the National Park. Several trails are available from debutant to difficult level (when I say difficult that mean you have strong steps going through hills sometime and you have to walk through roots). You have the feeling you are walking in a Jurassic forest. We managed to see Quetzal in the tree just in front of the living room.
Except that, Bedrich is super friendly, and the food is super good. Also this place is really affordable: breakfast included (gallo pinto or the best pancakes of Costa Rica ! 🥞).
I strongly recommend it 👍🏻 ! None
- Walasek (9/5): A rustic getaway - The hiking trails were great. The woman you worked there, Shirley, was amazing! She was so kind and attentive, made us great meals and helped anytime we had a problem. We also loved the pingpong table and hot shower. The main dining area gets quite cold - a fireplace would help. But it's meant to be rustic - we liked it.
- Ethan (9/5): Superb -
- Michael (10/5): One of our favorite places to stay during our 2 week holiday - Host was exceptional. Very welcoming. Trails were very well marked and birding excellent Nothing
- Rathore (9/5): Beautiful place & wonderful people. Highly recommended! - Amazing welcome & service / communication from all the staff. It felt like being a guest with the family. We weren't prepared for the cold at night. There were plenty of blankets, but it was a little difficult with small children.
- Craig (9/5): Superb -
- Kent (9/5): Superb -
- Douglas (8/5): Very good -
- Natalie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Corinne (10/5): This is a gem of a stay, I would definitely recommend this lovely place - Lots of natural space, wilderness, out of the tourist track. Very comfortable and hospitable and friendly. Amazing views from the deck We liked everything
