Guest Reviews
- Raquel (10/5): Excelente - Lucia un amor de persona, nos atendió genial y no nos faltó de nada en nuestra estancia. Fue un placer quedarse en este lugar. Repetiremos seguro!
- María (5/5): -
- Ondrej (9/5): Lucia, was a great and helpful host. She recommended us a great restaurant in the area and showed us that it is possible -
- Francisco (8/5): Very good - The pristine river.
- Youssef (9/5): Superb -
- Antonia (7/5): Good - The breakfast was really good. It was quite loud at night since the other guests were having a party.
- Rick (10/5): Terrific location, birding was fabulous for the one night we stayed. - Everything. Lots of birds (hummingbirds, parrots, toucans & others). Very nice secluded location right near the river. Host took care of us great & breakfast was exceptional. Road getting to the property (about 1/4 mile) would be a bit rough without an SUV.
- Raul (10/5): I will be back. Absolutely. Location and service is wonderful. Thank you! - The human-like quality of service by Lucia and Johana. I would just suggest a new investment on dehumidifier in each room like next one:

The rooms will significantly improve humidity with this dehumidifier, bed clothing will be more protected and guest will be even more confortable. It is my best recommendation to this lodge to hotel service quality controllers.
I would take my personal home dehumidifier if not onsite, next time.
I loved the stay so much!
- Hess (10/5): Exceptional -
- Céline (9/5): Feels like you’re at a costa rica’s home! - The lady is so so so lovely, we stayed one night and everything was clear.
- Antoine (9/5): Superb - Very kind host
Comfortable place Hard to find
- Roberto (7/5): Good -
- Keith (10/5): Lucia was such an amazing host. Very kind and helpful. I loved seeing monkeys and so many beautiful birds. Very peaceful - The nature was amazing. The staff were so kind. Nothing. I wish I could have stayed longer.
- Elias (10/5): A Serene Riverside Escape - We stayed at Horquetas River Lodge for one night on our way to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. It is a secluded gem offering a retreat next to a beautiful river. With only two rooms, the lodge ensures a peaceful and private experience.
The rooms are spacious and equipped with air conditioning, providing a comfortable and relaxing environment. The friendly staff adds to the charm of this place, always ready to prepare food upon request. For those who prefer to cook their own meals, there's a well-equipped kitchen available for guest use.
Overall, Horquetas River Lodge offers a beautiful and serene escape with excellent amenities and a welcoming atmosphere. It's an ideal destination for those seeking peace, privacy, and a touch of nature and a very recommended stop for your road trip! One thing to note is that the road to the property can be challenging for low suspension cars. It's advisable to have a vehicle with some ground clearance, as the walk from the gate to the lodge can be quite a trek.
- Jens (8/5): Very good - A bungalow out in the forest, quiet a bit from the reception. Very dark in the evening but interesting and no problems to sleep. The signs with the name of the place was not easy to see from the road when you arrive after sunset....
- Rishi (10/5): Exceptional - The property is in a quiet place, adjacent to a forest, can spend the day doing nothing.
Only good if you are looking for a quiet place to stay, a bit away from modern amenities.
We stayed here to visit the nearby Braulio Carrillo National Park.
The host is flexible and friendly, complete kitchen available with refrigerator, microwave, stove, utensils etc
- Anastasiia (10/5): Unforgatible stay with many animals on the territory. - The property is very remote, you can’t find it without a car. The lady working there is amazing. You forgive small issues connected to your stay just because of how nice this lady is. She is in love with her country, the nature and the animal around. My 10 points is to her really. As for accommodation it was good, the breakfast (cooked by the same lady) is great. You stay in the jungle and no one around. You wake up to howling monkeys sitting next to your room around 5-6am. So be ready. It was difficult (or impossible) to adjust the temperature of the shower. Very cold or boiling hot. The rest was good.
- Ambuj (10/5): Amazing, best place in Costa Rica - Everything. This is the best property I have ever stayed. The hosts are wonderful. There are only two rooms and the other room was empty when we stayed there, so we had the whole place to ourselves. It was like living in a house in middle of forest. I especially loved the big outdoor kitchen. Amazing thing was that Wi-Fi was also quite good in the middle of forest. They also let us ride their horses for free. Breakfast was also amazing. Will definitely go back to stay here. Loved everything
- Jim (5/5): Passable -
- Dana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amber (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful place with peace and tranquility around. Host was superb and was very kind even when I arrived late at night in the rain. Room was beautiful and breakfast tasted great!
- Emma (9/5): Superb -
- Julie (8/5): It was a cosy respite from a fairly hectic schedule. We just read and waited out the rain. - Lucie made us very welcome and although we speak very little Spanish and she very little English we got by using google translate. I had the best 2 nights sleep of our whole trip dispite the rain thundering down on the roof. Due to the traffic we arrived later than planned and it was dark. We had been told there was no sign but to look out for some red, white and blue gates (which we couldn’t see as it was dark). Turned out there WAS a sign but we thought it was just advertising the place rather than the actual location.
- Cristiane (9/5): Very nice stop if you are going a long way on the road. We used these days to rest and the place brought us that. Lucia - Lucia was an excellent host, the place is quiet and beautiful. Also the hanging out area is very nice.breakfast was also great Rooms are quite simple, tv didn’t really work, but yet we had a great time.
- Mathilde (9/5): It was a great stay ! Surrounded by silence and nature and the host is simply adorable - The location is amazing, the room is very spacious and the lounge/kitchen is beautiful and well equipped The shower is a bit hard to handle
- Carleen (10/5): Excellent value! Exceeded expectations. - Very well maintained property! HUGE yard. Beautiful River. Outdoor Kitchen. Lots of birds to see!!
Host (Lucia) was wonderful! Nothing. It was amazing.
- Peter (10/5): Stay was awesome!!! - Breakfast was super tasty! Location was amazing! Walking along the river and trails was beautiful!!! Nothing, every effort was made for a fantastic stay!!
- Debbi (9/5): This was a lovely stay and Lucia made it excellent. her enthusiasm and loving care put us at ease and made us feel comfo - loved the environment and being very close to nature. loved the very large outdoor patio. LOVED Lucia. Loved being close to the river and being able to swim in it, loved Lucia’s breakfasts!! the hot water was wonky, it’s a bit scary driving there in the dark, and would highly suggest a 4x4 for the long, rocky road from the main road to the accommodation.
- Peterson (10/5): It was wonderful because of the owner. - The owner. She was so amenable. She could not have been any more helpful and pleasant. You can’t go wrong staying here. We stayed here one night on our way to the Caribbean.
- Valentas (10/5): Exceptional - Nice and very clean and big room. Host very kind and caring
- Monica (8/5): Very good -
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional - This place turned out to be a wonderful surprise! The hosts were incredibly sweet and the vibe of the place was perfect.
- Aneta (10/5): Exceptional -
- Quinn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Manuel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gregory (7/5): Good - The place is gorgeous and we love it. It is clean and comfortable. We stayed there a week ago (under Luisa Bueno my wife's name) and we went again because we liked it very much. The hostess was the first time very friendly. This time the hostess was not very friendly. She asked us why we did not take breakfast this time. We said we brought our own breakfast. She was not very amused. We took the same room as a week ago (room 1 for 2 persons) She asked if we slept on two beds. We said yes. She said that is not right you have to sleep on one bed. She was very rude. We said we paid for a room for 2 persons and not for one bed. Definitely not nice. We will not be visiting this nice place again because of her regretfully.
- Anja (10/5): wonderful! - quiet location -
- Bermudez (8/5): Very good -
- Esteban (9/5): Superb -
- Janell (9/5): Really nice - The lady was very nice and welcoming.
Breakfast was okay. Beds were comfortable. Location is very beautiful.
It's clean Nothing
- Itai (9/5): Nice place in the middle of the forest - We were surprised, in a good manner, from the location of the place that was deep in the forest.
Lots of wildlife and a stream nearby – a very pleasant surrounding.
Nice outdoor kitchen with a big place to sit and eat.
The rooms were comfortable and clean.
Lucia, the host, was very friendly and helpful.
We had a really good stay.
- Jacqueline (8/5): Clean, modern bathroom, great breakfast, charming host! - Very clean with properly intact mosquito nets on the windows! Nice modern bathroom. Totally charming greeting, breakfast and care from the lovely owner. She used charm and Google translate to communicate with both us (in English) and the German guests in the next room. Very nice breakfast and lots of good coffee. Nice river. I had a tussle with the shower in it won! I got either too-hot water or cold, nothing in between!
- Jose (9/5): We enjoyed our stay at River Lodge. You can get a real Rain forest experience while being confortable . I totally recomm - It was very clean, quiet and the breakfast was really good! It is a bit far from the entrance.
- Alex (8/5): Beautiful place in secluded location - Beautiful setting on a raunch but in a little jungle oasis. Very peaceful although there was occasional noise from the farm. Lots of birds to see and a little river with swimming hole 2 minutes walk. The host Lucia is a very lovley woman. There was some confusion as I thought I had booked for breakfast however I had not but she provided breakfast any way. Muchos gracias. A small problem, only one burner works on the stove and some of the pans had to be washed before use as they had been stored dirty.
- Rachel (9/5): Great place off the beaten track! - Lucia and her husband were fantastic; we felt incredibly welcomed by them. The breakfast provided by Lucia was also delicious! The whole accommodation was amazing too - the small things had been thought out to provide everything you needed in what is a remote location. As the location is in the middle of nowhere, I would recommend having your own car to fully enjoy this place. Also, maybe bring earplugs because the monkeys can get loud at night!
- John (9/5): Superb - Great location in the wilds and the host, Lucia is lovely.
Great reception and a warm and fun person 👍👍
Lots of wildlife, we heard howler monkeys in the morning and had a river where we could swim very close by.
Very relaxed and close to nature. We would return 👍👍 The drive from the road needs to be taken slowly but is passable with care. The turning isn't obvious or clear from the main road.
- Pierre-louis (9/5): It was fine for the price. The service person was very pleasant and accommodating - The nature setting. The name of the property was not properly marked on the entrance gate. Difficult to know whether you are in the right place.
They need to have a list of nearby activities for people to do…. like the palm tours, the butterfly farm. recommended restaurants.
- Lothar (9/5): Superb - De host was super sweet, she doesn't speak English but that's not a problem! The breakfast that she makes is also very delicious.
- Morten (10/5): Amazing and unique. - The location is superb. You are surrounded by nature. You will likely see and hear the howling monkeys and some nice birds. Also, it is great that you can prepare food on a wood-fired barbecue so make sure to bring some meat. There is also a place where you can make a bonfire in the evening. Throughout the day you have a river for yourself with refreshing water in which you can swim. The hosts were a very friendly couple and made nice breakfast at anytime. If you do not speak Spanish it is no problem, because Google translate can be used. The rooms and bathrooms itself are very clean and up-to-date with new equipment (e.g. Airco, Rain-shower) I would highly recommend to stay here as it is a unique experience in Costa Rica.
It is recommended to bring some cash in advance for the payment, because the ATM in the village nearby did not worked for me.
- Samuel (10/5): The best stay we have had in Costa Rica so far! - Lucia and her husband Jorge were absolutely wonderful hosts. They took us to the market when we needed food, they let us play with their horses and other animals, and they were extremely accommodating and lovely. we made very good friends with them.
As for the location, depending on what you want, it can be very nice for you. The river lodge is located in a rather secluded area away from civilization, so it is perfect for a getaway - idyllic and perfect for a working holiday or for some white space and time to relax. Still, it still has all the modern amenities you need (shower, hot water, kitchen). the environment is lovely, there are lots of birds, squirrels, and insects. Mosquitoes are aplenty though, and if you have a fear (or love) for cockroaches (the forest kind, not the types found in sewers), a cautionary note that you may expect to find some very big wood roaches (4 inches or larger).
You can also take a dip in the river, which is very refreshing.
I think our highlight was really about the natural getaway and the chance to chat with Lucia and Jorge about Costa Rica as well as to play with their animals. There are many insects, but you can always buy a good mosquito or bug spray.
- Carly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amy (9/5): Cute little pitstop - We stayed here as a pitstop between Tortegaro and La Fortuna. It's a cute place which is set back from the main road, by the river and amongst the trees and wildlife. There's a huge area outside the room to have a BBQ, wash up, cook and dine. Lucia is lovely and we communicated fine using Google translate. It's a comfortable stay with a lovely bathroom, safe, parking and outdoor seating. We couldn't get hot water for two people, only enough for one person. It is VERY difficult to find on an evening. We were prepared for this but still took three attempts because you are driving along a main and busy road so can't really drive slowly and before you know it you've passed it. There needs to be clearly signage or lighting as it is pitch black and all you are looking for is a gate along a gravel entrance.
- Edith (7/5): Good - Our host Lucia was great and very service oriented. Location was great from nature perspective, spacious room and very nice outdoor area. The location was further away from Sarapiqui than expected. The bathroom was very nice, but the water temperature was unpredictable and therefore risky, switching from cold to very very hot.
- Mayari (10/5): Wonderful cabin to visit a nice river - The room, we were 4 adults and still we were able to be comfortable. The staff was very kind. The close location to the river Nothing I can complain about
