- Anne (10/5): - We had a wonderfull stay at Trastienda Guesthouse! We felt just like home, with a warm atmosphere and good vibes. Juan is adorable. The house is cosy, the kitchen has everything, and the room is very nice. And a lot of original and thoughtfull design and decoration details. Great location a few minutes from the main street. We couldn’t hope for more for the beggining of our trip! Thanks again Juan!
Abbadate riscaldamento in camera! :D
- Ashleigh (8/5): - Friendly and helpful staff. Great location. Good for a short stay to see the glacier.
- Mariano gabriel (10/5): Excelente. - El ambiente, totalmente ameno, como en casa. Nada.
- Tal (9/5): - Good house, the owner was very kind and helpful

- Ariella (10/5): - Super cute, clean, and comfortable apartment! Would have liked to stay longer! There was a slight mildew smell in the bathroom, but otherwise great
- Yuval (10/5): A hidden gem - Above all (and there where many!) - the super-kind manager.
- Marije (7/5): Oké hostel - Loved the location, really easy to go into town. But far from the busstation tho.
There’s one bathroom and an extra toilet for the whole hostel - it was kind of hard to get in line for it. We had a really nice check-in when we got invited for a diner in hostel, we thought it was free - as there was no mentioned of any cost, just be welcome and join. We got a bill afterwards of 70.000 pesos for the dinner.
When we asked owner Juan about this, he gave us 50.000 back. See above
- Fernando (9/5): Muito boa!

- Siu Cheung (8/5): - everything is good! Adequate space for kitchen. host is very nice guy. my first date stay there is full. 14 people to use 1 shower is so hard.
- Maria (10/5): Cosy house and great host - This is a very cozy house, we really enjoyed our stay there. Juan is a great person, very welcoming and a great chef!
The private room is upstairs in a building next to the main house, allowing good privacy. There is a small kitchenette in the room but we preferred to use the one in the main house which had everything you need.
Location is pretty ideal
- nicholas (8/5): Not recommended only a few nights if you want to get sleep - Location Did not get room I booked was to be queen bed room was twin bed room can hear noise from downstairs no lockers for valuables
- Carlos (10/5): -

- Lopez calvo (10/5): -
- Harriet (7/5): Good - Not much sound proofing.
- Thomas (6/5): Pleasant -
- Jonathan (8/5): On balance a lovely place to stay; and would recommend to future guests - Juan was incredibly welcoming and made us feel very comfortable in his home which had a homely feel and board games for us to play. The location was excellent for reaching the main town. Overall, a lovely stay and excellent value for money. Could have been slightly cleaner. Cat was disruptive in the kitchen, jumping on the counter whilst trying to cook
- Karolina (8/5): Cozy guest house for a fair price - It was a nice and cozy guest house, run a kind host. We had some miscommunication at first with the check-in, but it’s because we arrived very late. The kitchen equipment could be a bit cleaner and refreshed, but it was very nice to have access to fully-equipped kitchen to prepare your own meals, because eating out is very expensive. The rooms were fine, but when we came, it seemed that some beds were used and not cleaned after previous guests. The bathroom was very spacious and comfortable but a little bit dirty. Overall, it’s a very cozy place, centrally-located, with very cozy vibes, which needs a bit more care to be better organized and clean.
- Alexandra (10/5): Exceptional -
- Georgie (9/5): Pleasant for a short stay in El calafate - Enjoyed our 2 night stay here. Nice kitchen to use with a very cute cat. Quiet location, but very close to the centre of town. Juan very friendly and kind.
- Christopher (9/5): Comfortable, clean and homely stay in the heart of Calafate - Super friendly staff, the place really felt like a home more than a hostel. Comfortable common area and nice, spacious, equipped kitchen. Bathroom was huge, shower was nice and rooms are spacious. The cat is super cute too! Although I love the cat, there are no doors to the kitchen so when you’re preparing food, the cat persistently jumps up onto the work surfaces and pesters you. There is also quite a bit of noise from the floorboards coming from the upstairs rooms if you are in the downstairs dormitory. Unfortunately when we were there, the guests upstairs were packing and dropping items until 2am which was loud enough to wake you up, and I’m not a light sleeper. Some signs in the upstairs dormitories to warn people to be mindfully quiet should remedy this!
- Samuel (10/5): Exceptional - A great place with generous common areas to cook and relax. Host and volunteer were super helpful. Would definitely stay here again!!
- Benil (10/5): Exceptional - Sweetest owner and volunteer. Very homey!
- Faure (10/5): Exceptional - Nice and warm place, a lot of space and to eat, you can also take advantage of the living room to chill with the cat or play the guitar !! The man's hosting us was very kind to us, highly recommend ! Just a little lack of noise isolation but okay
- Michael (4/5): Disappointing - Good location Not clean. Maybe they'd forgotten to clean the room. Had to sleep in our clothes as it was too late to find another hotel
- Agata (6/5): Pleasant - Cool people (fellow guests) and nice vibe
Nice common area
Nice design Rather dirty.
Very difficult check-in. (We wasted 2 hours waiting for the owner. When contacted the number indicated, a lady answered us that the owner had an issue with his phone and she didn't know when he would show up in the hostel. Luckily, later she allowed us to get into our room without the check-in.)
- Tereza (10/5): Exceptional - The owner was super friendly and welcoming! We booked a private room upstairs with shared bathroom and it met our expectations.
- Orla (9/5): Nice room and shower but very cold - We booked very last minute as our bus was cancelled and we needed somewhere to stay the night. The room was nice and lovely shower. But it was very cold. My husband left his kindle behind and I messaged the property to check if they found it but they never responded.
- Delfina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sophia (3/5): Poor - Cat is cute. Location also goof Unfortunately, our double room was extremely dirty and clearly not cleaned. I hope this was a one-time issue, as the location and the owner are very nice. However, a dirty toilet and dust and grime everywhere are simply unacceptable.
- Saya (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chui (7/5): Good -
- Jessica (7/5): Good - Good location and Juan the owner was very friendly and helpful. Shared spaces were nice with a nice garden and well stocked kitchen. Our room and bathroom fell quite new with a good amount of space. Felt very safe. The bathroom in our private room smelt awful (drain/sewage smell) which did not fade over time. Overall the place was not that clean eg. dead bugs on the floor, towels smelt bad etc. Would be a really excellent place to stay if these things were sorted as these are easy fixes. Otherwise we enjoyed staying here.
- Jennifer (9/5): Great host in a stylish comfortable home! - Juan is an amazing host! Made us feel right at home and was incredibly helpful. He has great style so the house is comfortable and welcoming
- Charlotte (10/5): Lovely and comfortable home base in El Calafate - Amazing host, beautiful space that feels like home, great kitchen, convenient location near downtown A lot of dust under the bed, needed a good sweep/vacuum
- Leahgg (7/5): Good - Provided towel, cute cat, nice house Had to make the bed myself on arrival, was not very clean in the bedroom or bathroom
- Megan (10/5): Exceptional - Great kitchen space. Very easy going host. If you mind sharing 1 shower room then this will not be for you. We had no problems (also it is not a huge guest house so not lots of people sharing).
- Jessica (10/5): Recommend to all! Great option - Great vibe! Lovely shared spaces and really good kitchen facilities. Felt more like a backpacker hostel. Ideal location. Very kind host. No locks on the double bedroom door but felt very safe at the hostel on a quite street!
- Treephob (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bates (10/5): Friendly people of all ages and nationalities, super conscientious host, and thoughtful design. - Great friendly people of all ages and nationalities super conscientious host, and thoughtful artistic design. Nice music and a friendly vibe. This place was truly set up for a lovely guest experience. All bunk beds in my shared room even had a double outlet (top and bottom bunk), a minor detail but one that really makes things easier for backpackers in a shared room. Blackout shades were also great. Nothing to say, it was a great experience.
- Vivian (10/5): Exceptional - Cozy hostel that felt like home. Nice living room area with couch and lots of board games and books to read.
- Mauricio (9/5): Superb - Juan is one of the most Friendliest, Supportive, Kind hosts we met in our 2-week trip to Argentina, we were impressed by how he cares about every single detail of the visitors.
Trastienda is super well located, 1 block away from the main Street of El Calafate.
Trastienda has a super nice/comfortable common space.
- Michelle (8/5): Very convivial place to stay 😃 - Very nice atmosphere at the guest house. Nice music. Nice host. We felt at home. Nothing. According to the concept (Guest house) it was very nice. A extra light in the room and a carpet in the bathroom would be nice.
- Martin (9/5): Superb -
- Dempsey (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dora (9/5): Superb - It's a very cute house in the centre of the town with amazing interior designs, which I really loved. The rooms are spacious and the kitchen and communal are is really good. The host Juan is so welcoming and an amazing cook! Only one bathroom
- Nichol (9/5): Lovely, cosy, calm place to stay. Very central. - This small guest house is so cosy, really felt like home for a few days. Such a lovely host and chill vibe. Very central but on a quite street. There is only 1 shower (two toilets) for all the guests which for some people is a problem. I am used to share living and only ever had to wait a couple of minutes so it wasn’t a problem for me.
- Jelena (10/5): See you again :) - Perfecz! Juan is very nice! All good :)
- Aleksandar (9/5): Superb -
- Aleksandar (9/5): Superb -
- Xavier (6/5): Cute enough but with potential to do so much better! - very cute house with lovely areas in a very convenient location, a short walk from the main road. the main issue for us was that there was no hot water in the morning. also the place is super cute but feels like the owner hasn’t really tried to live there, otherwise he would discover all minor annoyances that could be easily solved. for example there’s no keys to the rooms or to the entire house even though it is left unattended all day, there’s no soap given to the guests when arriving and there’s no soap available in the bathroom. the amount of toilet paper left for a whole house of three dorms is not enough for everyone and there’s also not enough crockery for everybody.
- Alexander (9/5): Superb - Cozy Hostel with great atmosphere. Spacious kitchen and nice bathroom with super hot shower. The location is good- quite central in el Calafate so you can reach everything by foot. The walls are quite thin so we could hear people arriving during the night. But nothing a pair of earplugs could not fix ;)
- Mark (3/5): Terrible Experience - Very dirty and noisy - Location We had a terrible experience at this place. It was extremely dirty, with 14 sleeping spots crammed into the main house, which had only one bathroom cleaned once a day. The evening scenes were unpleasant, as hair was everywhere in the bathroom, used toilet paper piled up, emitting a foul odor throughout the house.
Despite booking a private room, it was oddly situated above the living room, with creaky floorboards and gaps allowing us to see and hear everything below. The non-locking door had sizable openings, about 3 centimeters wide.
After one night, we expressed our desire to leave and requested a partial refund for the remaining three nights. The owner reacted defensively and seemed irritated, leaving us with an overall unpleasant feeling.
- Maria (9/5): Superb -
- Charles (10/5): Exceptional - We had the pleasure of staying over Christmas and the host, Juan, put on an amazing traditional Argentinian BBQ for the guests. Cannot say anything bad about this place. Juan and his Trastienda Guest House made our Christmas away from home one we will never forget! Cannot recommend highly enough!
- Katie (10/5): Exceptional - Juan was amazing, really friendly and attentive! He gave us a lot of recommendations in el calafate as well. The guest house was clean, spacious, and felt very communal. The kitchen was fully equipped and there was a coffee machine as well. Garden was a nice outdoor space and Juan also hosted an amazing Asado! The location was great as well.
- Renee (10/5): Felt Like Home - Staying at this hostel was like staying at a friends house. It was exactly as pictured, beautifully designed & full of friendly people, especially our host Juan! The beds are comfortable, rooms are warm & it’s continuously cleaned. We loved our stay here & would definitely stay again.
The large community kitchen was great for cooking & meeting people. There are plenty of places to hang out, have a cup of coffee, chat with other guest, etc. It truly felt like staying at a friends house & is one of our favorite hostels we’ve ever stayed in. If you’re a couple (we are too), don’t be detoured by the dormitory style rooms. They’re clean, comfortable & honestly it was the best dormitory style room we’ve stayed in. There are lockable drawers under the bed to store valuable items (you’ll need to bring a lock). It’s walkable to everything in town! With restaurants, bars & grocery stores all nearby. There’s a shared refrigerator for groceries as well.
In the previous reviews some guests are frustrated by the one bathroom which is understandable but we stayed here for 4 days and never had an issue. You may need to wait 5 minutes or so to shower but there is a second toilet if you just need to go to the bathroom.
One of our favorite nights here, the host Juan made asado & everyone in the hostel watched the football game together, enjoyed the asado & had some beers.
- Chris (9/5): For location & what I wanted to see while I was here perfect location and the advice by host was the best when come - Juan The host was so helpful in so many ways nothing was no bother with plenty of tips to get around & see the sights .central to all the town a very short walk would recommend
- Patrick (7/5): Good -
- José (8/5): Very good -
- Antonella (8/5): Very nice guesthouse in perfect location! - The location is perfect and the host very friendly! Not that I didn’t like. Simply, one toilet/bathroom for the people we were (8) didn’t seem enough.
- Süheda (9/5): Highly recommend because it’s super cozy - It’s a really cozy hostel. The kitchen was very well equipped. It was warm and super comfortable. The owner is nice and we felt good there. It could be cleaner. One toilet in the hostel and it wasn’t cleaned very often. There were some dust balls.
- Emma (10/5): Would definitely recommend - Super friendly and helpful host, comfortable and a great location next to the main town area. Felt like being at home for a few days!
- Silja (7/5): Good -
- Seongmin (10/5): Exceptional - The best thing was juan was soso kind and he made me really comfortable during my stay in this hostel Nothing!!
- Bethany (10/5): Cosy and comfortable stay! - Juan made us feel right at home, the place is cosy and welcoming. The location is perfect. Would stay again. Nothing.
- Haruto (10/5): Highly recommend - Juan was super nice and made sure that I was comfortable during the stay. The location is good and I felt at home at the place. The room is clean and there is a wide kitchen. Nothing, it was perfect.
- Rie (5/5): Cat friendly but not card friendly, * overcharges - Lovely interior. Cute cat :D We met some really nice guests here. Wifi worked well entire time. kitchen well stocked and very comfy rooms. The owner charged us the 21% VAT that booking says foreigners are exempt from ('important details' section in booking). We experienced this also in a few other places throughout our trip in Argentina (not all just to be clear :D ). As this was a nonrefundable booking we had few options last minute. There are pretty big charges the owner adds if you pay with card (both credit and debit) that are not mentioned in the booking terms. If you plan to use card I don't recommend this hostel. We found others in the area that did not take advantage of tourists here.
*not fair to other hostels/ accommodations in area who charge price listed on Booking.com
- Aleksandra (8/5): Very good - The place is fine, nice livingroom downstairs, kitchen and dining room for guests. The room was cold( no heaters in the room). We couldn’t lock the room doors so need to take valuable stuff with us all the time we left the place. Our last night there was a loud party downstairs till 4:00 am, I didn’t sleep the whole night, not so nice especially when you need to work the next day.
- Militaru (10/5): Exceptional -
