- Jerome (9/5): Fantastic, quiet, amazing dog. - Nico is a joy to behold. Faculties are fantastic.
Owner is very accommodating and quick to respond to messages.
Beds are comfortable, the jacuzzi tub in room was phenomenal. had zero complaints. would definitely return. the location is a bit tricky to find but really not much can be done there to make the experience any better for the nightly rate.
- William (10/5): Nice place, very clean and everything worked well. Big, happy, friendly dog. - Good breakfast
Interesting owner
Good dog, seemed thoughtful but he was kind of quiet. Good moose chaser.
Nice facilities - everything top rated. About half kilometer unpaved road and very steep driveway. It didn't bother us, just surprised us.
- Keane (10/5): This place is wonderful and Steve is a great host. To us this is a triple A place to stay - My wife and I loved our stay here. The house was clean and beautiful. We felt so comfortable and our room was wonderful! The view overlooking the lake was amazing. Our host was there to be sure our stay was perfect. He was able to answer any question we had about gross morn including construction slowdowns. He truly helped us enjoy our time at the park and the B&B! He truly wants people to enjoy as much as they can during their stay.
- Anonym999 (10/5): If you are looking for peace and quiet and want to feel at home, then come to Stephen's. - Stephen is a caring host who grew up in the area and enjoys sharing his experiences with his guests. He is incredibly flexible and helpful. Even if you've never felt comfortable around dogs before, Stephen's dog Nico will help you overcome your fear. Nico is a well-balanced dog that everyone will love.
We stayed there for a week and would definitely stay again if we were to vacation in the region. We never got bored during our time there or in the area. The view of Deer Lake is magnificent.
Thanks to Stephen for your hospitality. You have to drive about 2-3 hours a day (there and back) if you want to hike in Gros Morne National Park, but in return you get to experience a unique world when you stay there.
- Ulrike (10/5): -
- Michelle (10/5): - Stephen was an excellent host - he went above and beyond during my stay, and was great company too. The home is beautiful, with bright spacious rooms and in a great location just minutes away from Humber Valley Resort. Highly recommend staying here!
- Juliana (10/5): Must love dogs - The location was perfect jumping off point for us to visit deer lake, corner brook and gros morne. Stephen and his dog, Niko, were more than kind and accommodating. We travelled with our dog who made fast friends with Niko and felt right at home. Stephen's home gives you the laid back feeling of being in your own place. It's relaxing and thoughtfully appointed. You'll have stunning views of deer lake on one side and the most charming wooded areas to lose yourself in a daydream at the back of the property. We loved meeting the other travellers during our stay and Stephen is very knowledgeable and happy to share insights about things to do and places to see in the area. Would definitely recommend and will plan to visit again. Everything was perfect
- Elizabeth (9/5): Lovely place, interesting and engaging host, great dog!! - Steve and Nico gave us a lovely Newfoundland welcome - made us feel right at home. Would definitely stay with him again, and would definitely recommend him to others. There was nothing that I didn't like. The place is a little out of the way - but that was part of its charm. If you are looking for a place where you can walk out the door and shop, this is not for you. If you are looking for a place to relax and recharge, this is the place!
- Diego (10/5): Beautiful house, gorgeous view, welcoming hosts - My room had a gorgeous view of Deer Lake; the owner was very welcoming and friendly. I traveled with my dog and he was very happy to run around with the canine host. Your stay only includes a Continental breakfast; most other B&B's I've stayed at do a full one. It's not terrible, but I did expect better.
- Jensen (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (10/5): Wonderful accommodation and great host. - The host Steve and his dog Nico are great hosts and make the stay that much more enjoyable! The location is very quiet and private. Great proximity to Gros Morne. Recommended. It is a little bit of a drive from any shops or restaurants, but is worth the drive.
- Olivia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steadman (10/5): The best accommodation experience I’ve had in the last 8 years of traveling to the west coast for work 😊 - Very relaxed experience and the host Steve was very welcoming and accommodating. It was my first time there and felt very comfortable and “at home”. Great location, close to main amenities but far enough away to enjoy a little piece of paradise. With the option to cook your own meals was a great option and the amazing balcony and bedroom views were a real bonus and a great way to begin and end a busy work day.
- Kenneth (10/5): Staying at The Thoughtful Dog exceeded our expectations... - The location was phenomenal, from the accommodations, Stephen, a wonderfully kind human(host), who provided insightful suggestions based on the areas we thought about visiting along with some lore and history in the surrounding area. Ironically enough one of the restaurants on our list was in Stephen's home town. We were in awe everywhere we went; the diversity in landscape; THE ROCK certainly earned that name, from barrens, tundra to cliffs, knolls and Dr Suess-like trees! We loved the tranquility we came 'home' to at The Thoughtful Dog each evening and the views to Deer Lake (morning as well) Aaahhhh!! Magical...
- Suzanne (9/5): It was our first time to stay in a B&B and we had a great experience! Steve and Nico were wonderful hosts who made u - It was quiet with a beautiful view and a short drive to anything we wanted. Nothing that I can think of.
- Michel (10/5): Pleasant, relaxing and comfortable 100% - Continental breakfast..fresh fruits, yogourt, choices of toasts, muffins, local jams and jelly. Options to add eggs, bacon and or sausage(wild game) for a modest extra fee.
Host was very kind, helpful, resourceful and flexible. He is knowledgeable as he is native of the area.
He offers a selection of tours in the region…informative.
Relaxing, homelike atmosphere. Guests have access to the kitchen( all appliances), dining room, living room, deck, hot tub, sauna. Free coffee and tea…self serve. It was nice to be able to come back and make our own supper instead of going out to a restaurant at the end of the day.
Our room was very comfortable, spacious and had all the amenities: towels, soap, shampoo…
Thank you so much for your hospitality! Nothing.
- Carol (10/5): Fun! - Steve is a 100% chill guy. We felt so comfortable and at home in his place. Loved Nico the husky dog—as chill as his owner. Nothing
- William (10/5): Great - Location was great, property was neat and clean. View, Well supplied, private.
- Debora (10/5): A peaceful stay in a beautiful setting - A beautiful home set in the woods overlooking Deer Lake. Very comfortable. Each room has an onsite bathroom. The king bed was very comfortable. The host was very helpful.
- Cliff (9/5): Very pleased all around about this stay. The hosting couple were fantastic with a big thank you to Howard. - Beautiful property with awesome views The last 2 kilometres of road into the property was washboards.
- Joyce (10/5): Very peaceful with an amazing view! -
- Michel (10/5): We had a great time. Loved the place along with Linda and Eugene who were taking care of the proper -
- Lori (10/5): Had a great time. - Amazing view. Beautiful home. Improve the road into property.
- Angela (10/5): Exceptional - Gorgeous view. The host had everything you need. Very friendly and helpful. Recommended other tours to adventure to. Loved that. The tours were amazing. Very clean and comfortable. Very highly recommend this place. Will definitely be back. Absolutely nothing
- Janice (9/5): A wonderful stay with beautiful views and extremely accommodating host. - Private- no one there but us. All facilities were available to us. Beds very comfortable and ensuites were spacious and well appointed. Nothing.
- Helen (10/5): Wonderful b&b with awesome views - Gorgeous location with incredible views.
Stephen was super friendly and welcoming and made me feel right at home.
Breakfast just hit the spot.nothing too much trouble
And he helped me find a handmade quilt! Perfect Nothing
- Ben (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kendall (10/5): Exceptional - Great host! Comfortable bed and bath. Breakfast was great! No TV in room
- Roger (10/5): Exceptional -
- Trevor (9/5): Superb - Stephen & Nico looked after me really well, great travel hints, beautiful breakfast, and a beautiful room and location.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Great Spot! - Loved the location and Stephen was an exceptional host! Great stay, great breakfast and very comfortable. My dog loved her stay as well and had an instance friend with Nico! They enjoyed playing together!
- Ted (10/5): More than satisfactory in every way. We highly recommend this property! - Stephen and his thoughtful dog are truly outstanding hosts. An excellent continental breakfast was cheerfully provided to accommodate our early morning departure The location info provided by Booking.com was not accurate. (Not Stephen’s fault!) Fortunately, Google Maps provided much better guidance.
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Kerry (10/5): Great place to stay…..highly recommend!!!! - Stephen was a great host. Catered to all our needs. His dog Nico was a welcoming touch. View was amazing.
- Laurie (9/5): Lovely home, kind owner, and adorable dog! - Lovely, clean home, very kind owner, special breakfast with homemade jams, fresh fruit and orange juice. Simply a cut above in every way!!
- Glenn (10/5): Exceptional - great nothing
- Matthew (10/5): Great views and company - A beautiful, comfortable and clean property in a location with outstanding views. The host went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, joined us for drinks at the golf club in walking distance, and served a great breakfast with interesting conversation. Of course the star of the show is Nico, the thoughtful dog who inspired the accomodation name, a friendly good boy ready to welcome all guests.
- Silvia (10/5): Splendid. Super host and lovely dog. -
- Ginakristan (7/5): Comfortable stay for a night. - We had a large room with a great ensuite. We were on the lower level with a large picture window. There is a sauna and a hot tub. Best part is Nico!! Breakfast was a little underwhelming. The laudry room spilled out dirty linen into the main room, and we felt like the owner should keep his private bedroom door closed. The property could use some landscaping.
- Gloria (10/5): A much welcomed respite from the day's travels. - Exceptional property extending a warm welcome, comfortable room, spotless bath, and breakfast available based on our schedule. Steve was extraordinarily understanding of our need to leave earlier than planned. Nico (dog) a gentle giant.
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dario (10/5): Steve and Nico were great hosts - Set in the mountains with an incredible view of Deer Lake
- Anthony (9/5): All good felt at home. No issues with our stay. Highly recommend this B&B great host and property. -
- Pam (10/5): It was fantastic - Host was fantastic gps doesn't take you to the location but a phone call to the host got us there. He did give us a heads up in an email but I had so many bookings I overlooked it
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Danielle (10/5): A wonderful stay. Treat yourself to this wonderful home and engaging host. - The minute we arrived, we felt so welcomed. The host was very interesting and we had some fascinating conversations.
The home is in a rural area and the views are extrarodinary! Stephen ( the host) was warm and inviting. The king size bed was super comfortable and the pillows, sheets and towels were of very good quality. The bathroom was modern and the kitchen, living room and outside deck were spectacular!
My husband and I will return if the occasion arises. Thank you so much Stephen! We loved everything! We don't have a single complaint.
- Carolyn (10/5): Excellent! - Everything Nothing
- Jill (10/5): Would definitely stay here again! - Spectacular vista!
- Hubertus (10/5): Exceptional - Stephen was a very nice host, we enjoyed our stay and his service. We loved his dog Nikki, just a “thoughtful “ one 👍
- Catherine (9/5): Steve made our stay very enjoyable. - Breakfast very good. Location might be tricky in winter. No TV in room.
- Hua (10/5): Very comfortable staying. - Steven is very awesome and very friendly host, very clean and comfortable place.
- Christina (10/5): Exceptional - Nico & Stephen make you feel right at home at their beautiful property with stunning views and an amazing golf course at their doorstep. Nico has excellent front of house manners and his significant human Stephen is a great host. Thank you very much for a fantastic evening with excellent company and conversations! We felt like visiting a friend.
- Racheleah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dave (10/5): Warm welcome and incredibly comfortable stay. - My wife, dog (Ivy), and I had a great time visiting the Thoughtful Dog. Nico, the resident dog, was so sweet and loved playing with Ivy. We stayed here after taking the ferry from North Sydney. It took us about 2.5 hours to get from the ferry terminal in NL.
Completely worth the stay. The property and views from the rooms are lovely. Steve is a wonderful host and made sure we had everything we needed to be comfortable. The breakfast was delicious and exactly what we needed for another day of busy driving. The beds were clean and especially comfortable. We didn't use the hot tub.
Would 100% stay again. Especially as a base camp for Gros Morne. Nothing. We were happy.
- Terry (10/5): Awesome! - One of the nicest BnBs we have stayed at over many years! Our host Stephen Spencer & Nico are the most engaging hosts. Stephens's knowledge & advice for all things travel "on the Rock" is exceptional and educational. His passion for Newfoundland is admirable. That we had to leave!!!
- Richard (10/5): The owner is thoughtful and welcoming and the rooms are great. - Everything
- Henry (8/5): An enjoyable stay, in a beautiful location, with a friendly host. - Clean comfortable room and bed with fantastic view. Friendly, welcoming host. Common areas could have been cleaner but room was spotless. Challenge of working and trying to run a B&B. Not enough time for everything.
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional -
- Henry (10/5): Exceptional - Just brilliant. Stephen was amazing, the property and the room are fantastic, Nico (the dog) is adorable and breakfast was great. Would have liked to stay much longer.
- Elaine (9/5): Once we were given accurate directions from the host we enjoyed our over night stay. - Steve was the perfect host. He made you feel relaxed and comfortable in his home as well if you were family. The property was beautiful. The location direction on Google Map were completely wrong. Bookings.com needs to correct address and directions. To be wandering dark steep country roads after a long drive is unacceptable. If you can’t give guests an accurate address you need to remove this property.
- Mary (10/5): Excellent location, very comfy and great value for the money. -
- Valerie (9/5): Superb - Steve was a wonderful host. The hot tub was welcomed after a long day of driving. The homemade bread and jams were excellent

- Brian (10/5): Terrifiic - Great location. Right at fantastic golf course, great view, super host, very pet friendly. Nothing. Wonderful stay with Steve
- Sharon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mike (10/5): Exceptional - I was blown away by its location and the views. The room was very clean with King size bed and it's own washroom with soaker Jacuzzi. Neco, a rescue dog, was such a delight to have around. He never barked once, and he gave the property a HOME feel. Have already recommended this to our friends, and will be back.
- Gayleen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Esther (10/5): The best B&B we visited in Newfoundland - stay at The Thoughtful Dog, you won’t regret a moment! - Nico. The house is fabulous - stunning inside and out. The rooms are a great size with plenty of space to spread out, sort your luggage after a week of travelling and just generally relax. Steve has all the little things that make a stay special in hand. And then there’s Nico. The most placid, welcoming, charming puppy I’ve met in some time. And I’m more of a cat person.
We had a great time. If we come back to Newfoundland we’ll go out of our way to stay here again. A little tricky to find. If using Apple Maps enter ‘The Thoughtful Dog Bed & Breakfast’ rather than the street address.
- Linda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lawson (10/5): Exceptional - Phenomenal location and a lovely host. Our dog got along super well with Nico, it was great to have a buddy for her to swim and play with. Nothing!
- Yvonne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lori (10/5): Exceptional -
- Norbert (10/5): A hidden gem,one hour from Gros-Morne - It's a two and a half hour drive from the ferry, that means a perfect location for the first night after arrival in Portes aux basques.
Stephen was a fantastic, attentive host. Nico, the thoughtful dog, is a very friendly creature!
The view from the deck is awesome. A jacuzzi is available. The bed was the best we ever had in Canada.
The breakfast Stephen prepared for us was incredible.
Altogether a hidden gem! We had only one day.
It's a one hour drive to Gros-Morne, so next time, we should consider to stay at "the thoughtful dog" and do the Gros-Morne trips from there.
- Mark (9/5): Superb - Beautiful, quiet spot overlooking Deer Lake. Gorgeous view of the Humber Valley from the golf course restaurant nearby. Easy access to the TCH. Large comfy room and bathroom. Excellent breakfast with local jams and breads, and more. But the star was our host Stephen's dog Nico. What a character.
- Baowen (10/5): Exceptional -
- George (10/5): Very comfortable & lovely. - Breakfast exceptional for a continental breakfast!
- Riley (9/5): Beautiful view - Nico was the sweetest dog, and Stephen was a very attentive and friendly host. Breakfast was fit for the kings! It's a beautiful home and our room was super comfortable, gorgeous views! The road was a bit rough to drive by car but we survived!
- Lisa (10/5): Exceptional - Host offered different jams from Newfoundland. Eager to listen and support any requests. Booking com should have a prepayment option.
- Mike (10/5): Stephen was fun to kid around with! We had a great stay! We miss Nico already! - Nico the greeter!! The place was clean and the view was spectacular!
- Brad (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (10/5): Our stay was short, but very relaxing! - Our host was great, and accomodated us for an early breakfast. The property is in a fantastic private location. Our room was wonderful, and the bed was super comfy. The dog was well-behaved and friendly, but not too much so. We did not get to stay longer, but that was not the host's fault, it was because of our schedule.
- John (8/5): Beautiful B&B - Very pleasant stay , beautiful views
Delicious breakfast
- Jordan (10/5): Excellent stay with the best company! - The Thoughtful Dog felt like a home away from home. The B&B couldn't have been a better experience and the name says it all - Steve is the most thoughtful host and his dog, Nico, is the best companion. We stayed 4 nights at the Thoughtful Dog and Steve provided us with plenty of suggestions on things to do outside of our already planned activities. Steve takes great care of his place and puts a lot of thought into making sure all his guests are comfortable. We drove into Gros Morne National Park everyday and thought the location was great because we didn't mind an hour drive back and forth. We also really appreciate Steve allowing us to use his kitchen and laundry during our stay! Great amenities like hot tub, sauna and even a foosball table! What a great time with good company! There could have been more idiot-proof wine openers ;)
- Robert (10/5): Wonderful stay - Steven was a great host and Niko was the perfect pet.
The view from the house was beautiful. There was nothing to dislike
- Doug (10/5): Would absolutely recommend a stay here. Vivian and Dave - Host was great. Dog was fun. Beautiful clean property with spectacular view. Great value Loved everything.
- Lynn (10/5): Great Stay - Beautiful place , the view, the price was good and Owner was very friendly and accomadating . The breakfast was great. Our room was very nice. Everything was great There was nothing we didn't like
