Guest Reviews

- Péter (8/5): Very good - The location is perfect! Unfortunately there were no glasses and coffee maker.
- Quentin (7/5): Good - Nice room, a little out of the villageby the sea. No real facilities
- Job (7/5): Good - Gilbert and his wife were amazing hosts. They did everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The location is very silent and right next to nature with spider monkeys and macaws in the trees. There is no ACs, and so it can get quite hot in the rooms. The fan provides relief, but it's good to be aware.
- Luís (6/5): Pleasant -
- Christine (5/5): Passable - The rooms were damp and cramped and the bathroom smelt. Well tended garden area with hammocks. Location by the sea and near the main village.
- Emily (8/5): Very good - Perfect beach front location, lovely staff. Green macaws and monkeys visit the garden and other birds. When they drop the fruit stones on the roof it's Very loud!
- Catherine (2/5): Nice location but the rude staff member ruined it for me - I wouldn't stay there again. - The location was the other side of the island to where the boat arrived. The hotel was supposed to have someone there to meet us and guide us to the hotel but they didn't bother. The boat company drew me a map and I worked out my own way to get there. The actual location is quite nice - surrounded by forest and next to the beach so you can hear the surf quite loudly. The naturalist guide they employ - Byron - was great. Very friendly and knowledgable about the wildlife of the area; I enjoyed the walks I did with him. They leave the outside lights on all night - for security apparently - but this makes the rooms very bright. I changed rooms to one at the back which was better. The main staff member was very rude and dismissive to me from the start and everything that I asked for from toilet paper to tea instead of coffee was met with sighs, eye rolling and a very insolent attitude. She was outright rude to me when I asked for drinking water and insisted that I walk 15 mins to the nearest shop and buy my own. The hotel also only takes cash as they cannot be bothered to get their card machine fixed and wanted USD not CRC - which you have to bring to the country with you as you can't get that locally.
- Anne (6/5): Overall okay but did not meet my needs - being able to cook, having. A place to sit outside my room. - Lovely setting. Rooms facing the beach looked great with a balcony or verandah in front to hang out, complete with table and chairs and hammocks. The rooms at the back not so good. Beds comfortable. Rooms spacious. No kitchen for guests to use. There was a fridge, but it was kept locked so was not very useful. A freezer would have been useful too. No hot water in shower. When I tried to adjust it, I got an electric shot - be careful.
- Valdas (6/5): Could do with some improvements - The hotel is located literally 20 meters away from the beach and surrounded by plants, trees and wildlife. Nice sitting area. Host was friendly and helpful although does not speak any english. Good value for money. Cameras everywhere, owner seems to be observing all the time. The humidity in the room was high and no protection from mosquitos unless you run the fan constantly. The beds are made from wood which combined with constant humidity makes musty smell in the room.
- Meurice (10/5): Exceptional - The best thing about our stay was the way we were welcomed and cared for. Many thanks to Dalila and Don Antonio (I believe its his name).
And the bowl of fruit for breakfast was delicious and just what I expected
- Donna (6/5): Pleasant - It was a quiet location. The management is not present at the location. They communicate through Whatsapp. Their attempt to be helpful with travel and guide connections ended up being more confusing than helpful. I decided to leave Tortuguero a different way and when William sent me a text with a time to leave and I responded by saying I had made other arrangements he sent me a barrage of texts reflecting his annoyance with me. Good luck managing a hotel on Whatsapp William.
- Gerhard (8/5): Very good -
- Tadeas (7/5): Good - Good acommodation, very nice staff. The rooms are not the nicests, but for the price they are very much ok. Feels rather private and secluded, but safe. Macaws in the garden (nearly?) daily. Be sure to insist on a mosquito net.
The contact number is for the owner, who is not based in Tortuguero. Does not have (up to date?) info about much, such as park payments or public transport schedule. I did not reflect this in my points evaluation though, not being relevant to acommodation, but take what he shares with you with many grains of salt. It would be better if the contact person were someone based in the area.
- Dmytro (10/5): I am sure that this a great value for the money, and a really underrated place. Very much recommend - The location is stunning, you are right on the beach, where the little turtles hatch during the season. It is a lush garden, with hammocks and small interior tropical decor details. The stuff is friendly. The breakfast is very rich.
- Nick (7/5): Good - Friendly staff. Nice location close to the beach. The room was very dark.
- Sandra (10/5): Exceptional - I loved my stay in this accommodation, for me it was perfect...close to the beach, the ocean was hearable, the monkey in the garden and the national park just attached. I was alone and Roberto took really good care...it was very clean and if there was anything i missed he helped me out! Thank!! It has nothing to do woth the accommodation!! but guys, tourists, people, visitors...PLEASE!!!! IF YOU LOVE TURTLES, JUST STAY AWAY FROM THE BEACH IN THE HOURS OF THEIR NESTING...RESPECT THE CLOSING HOURS! AND DON'T WALK CLOSE TO FRESH NESTS, OLD NESTS WITH READY EGGS ARE JUST NEXT TO IT...PLEASE, KEEP THIS PLACE UNIQUE AND THE TURTLE ALIVE!! LEAVE NOTHING THAN YOUR FOOT PRINTS, TAKE ONLY WHAT BELONGED TO HUMANS BEFORE (TRASH)...THANKS!!
- Mathias (5/5): Passable - Having stayed in other hostels, this one was very damp, I had several animals in my room and the hot water didn't work.
- Steuerrad (8/5): Very good - Hotel at the beach. Very friendly and helpful staff. They make a really good breakfast.
- Luca (7/5): Good - The position, the kindness of the staff and the breakfast The room
- William (8/5): Very good -
- Céspedes (8/5): Very good -
- Schmidt (9/5): Superb - Super friendly people, nice and calm area, cozy chill out area and free coffee :)
- Sasha (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful beachfront property. The view was amazing, the rooms were clean and comfortable and the staff was amazing.
- Marian (10/5): I liked it so much I stayed 2 extra days - spotlessly clean, helpful and friendly staff.Great hot shower Good breakfast Well equipped and clean kitchen nothing
- Tamara (6/5): Pleasant - - friendly staff
- good location
- very good breakfast
- boardgames for free
- nice view and few animals in the garden - staff doesn't even speak basic english so you have to communicate everything via whatsapp (administration, owner or guide)
- pipes/shower was leaking in the room
- actually no place to store the luggage
-booked transfer (via the hotel) was changed with very short notice so we didn't get the chance to search for alternativ
- toilet bins not emptied (stayed 3 nights)
- very bright light outside, was uncomfortable in the evening due to massive amount of insects
- staff uses interesting currancy exchange rate so doublecheck (got money back after complaining)
- Brian (3/5): Poor -
- Hazel (8/5): lovely, friendly relaxed place 😊 amazing hammocks for siestas - clean, modern. free coffee available most of the day, guide books, games, cards, dominos, but very quiet.
very close to the beach & literally at the end of the jaguar trail.
host does not speak a word of English, but is very smiley and helpful.
came back a little late from the early morning canoe tour and the host was still happy to serve breakfast (which was much appreciated after being up at 5:30) a little quiet, not many other guest at the time I visited (maybe I was just unlucky because the place is gorgeous)
- Iain (10/5): My Gecko stay - Location, food and staff The hotel is 30 yards from the beach. The staff were so helpful and friendly. The breakfast was superb. Great value for money 🏴💙
- Sara (9/5): Superb -
- Lisa (9/5): Superb - I loved the location. steps away from beach and the very start of the Jaguar trail that runs just along the beach. The property was diligently maintained through out the day by the never stopping staff. The price was great. They do serve breakfast for extra however I am on budget so opted for the use of stocked kitchen. The first day, I couldn’t use kitchen because someone had left half full pots on the stove. signs might be in order. The bathroom looked like it needed love but if you take a walk through the charming village you will notice and concur that compared to most other places, this place is 5star. The shower did not drain properly, which isn’t a big deal as long as you don’t pee in the shower :-@ and I just used one of their laminated menus to squeegee it to the drain.
- Jess (5/5): Passable -
- Clare (9/5): Superb - Quiet calm and away from the main street
On the beach
Hammocks were nice
Helpful staff
- Lucie (7/5): Great hotel, just the room was so dark and crowded, and mattress had plastic cover on it. - Breakfast was delicious! And location amazing. Close to the beach and National park. Cockroaches in the room.
- Luna (7/5): good for what we paid - the hotel was very close to the beach and far from the town’s noise. the hotel area was spacious with plenty of sitting spots. they allowed us to use the kitchen although it was being used by staff in the mornings and evenings. we met the hotel’s guide who was really nice and offered us some interesting tours. they also accommodated to a -very- early checkin without notice. since we arrived early, the room wasn’t completely ready for us. we were missing towels and toilet paper. we also found a solid hand soap which was probably left by previous guests.
the room was spacious enough and with lots of light, but some of the windows didn’t have a glass, only mosquito net, so you could hear the noise from outside. our room was by the common area, so we could hear the staff sitting outside as if they were in the room.
the kitchen’s state was quite poor and dirty, and the shower didn’t drain properly.
- Neltzer (10/5): Exceptional - Todo en general excelente
- Rebecca (10/5): Exceptional - I really enjoyed my stay here. staff was suuuper friendly even tho they don’t really speak english unfortunately. room was super nice ans clean. location is mice because its right at the beach and in a really quiet area. but its also a bit of a walk and at night I felt really uncomfortable with all the guys catcalling me on the way to the hostel. monkeys and parrots in the garden of the hostel. turtle tour was good too. enjoyed it that much that I ended up extending my stay. unfortunately the kitchen was super dirty but I‘m not sure if you are supposed to cook there anyway
- Juancarlos (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kathleen (8/5): Wildlife and breakfast! - Very helpful and friendly staff, no English but the use of a translating app. Worked well. Martha makes an amazung breakfast. Location right next to jaguar trail, but out of the town making it peaceful and quiet, sloth and monkeys in the garden of hotel. Great communication pre arrival. Big plastic cover over mattress, noisy and sweaty. Oversized furniture for size of the room, making it difficult to move around. No daily housekeeping so no clean towels or emptying of toilet bin.
