Guest Reviews
- Nikola (10/5): We cannot recommend Sue & Tony’s magnificent retreat highly enough!! - Three girlfriends and I road-tripped to Cooktown for a weekend of sightseeing.
Our hosts, Sue and Tony, were absolutely superb and the retreat is stunning!
We swam, we drank champagne, we ate Sue’s delicious home made pizzas and banana cake, we enjoy laughs and stories around the fire pit (with Sue and Tony). We didn’t like leaving to come home.
- Cecilia (10/5): Very relaxing and comfortable - The hosts, Sue and Tony, were so welcoming and friendly, also ready with very helpful advice on what to see and do in the area. The breakfasts were excellent and the surroundings were really beautiful - a real tropical paradise. Absolutely nothing comes to mind. This beautiful piece of paradise is about 10km outside of Cooktown, so you'll need a car, if you are flying in, in order to explore
- Eric (10/5): Fantastic stay in lovely Cooktown - Loved this place! It’s like staying with family, although you have never met them before. The property is beautiful, the swimming pool in particular. Tree frogs, the most spectacular butterflies & tropical birds visit the garden and Sue’s food is delicious. Tony is keen to share his knowledge about local flora & fauna, we loved that. Rooms are on the small side, but comfortable. And there is heaps of extra space on the veranda! The AC temperature cannot be controlled from the room (only the fan). But that was only a very small thing in an otherwise fantastic stay. Don’t hesitate to book!

- John (10/5): A little bit of Paradise - Wow! what a little piece of paradise. The owners Tony and Sue were fantastic hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. They were very happy to engage with guests, and there were lots of communal spaces if you wanted privacy. We would highly recommend this place and would not even look elsewhere if we were in the area again. There was very little not to like, we would normally prefer a firmer bed, but this would not deter us from staying here again.
- Jane (10/5): The moment you arrive you are made to feel welcome - just book it. - The location was beautiful, set in acres of garden. Everything in the rooms and outside is thought out and attractive. Sue and Tony couldn’t have been more hospitable. They made us very welcome and Sue went the extra mile baking muffins and cookies for guests and lighting a camp fire in the evenings, even providing a cheese platter for our evening drinks. Tony took us for a walk to the river explaining about the trees in the forest. Nothing
- Anne (10/5): We couldn't have asked for a more delightfully quiet, relaxing and comfortable place to stay. - Our hosts Tony and Sue were very friendly and hospitable. Their well designed and appointed lodge was surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens including a refreshing pool. There was nothing we didn't like.

It is quiet, tranquil and set in the most beautiful lush tropical gardens and with a beautiful pool. We enjoyed tropical rain which is a treat. - Juergen (10/5): Exceptional - We loved the beautiful tropical garden and sitting on the veranda in the evening. It is very quiet, you hear only nature. The breakfast is very good and Tony's coffee as well and you have to try Sue's fish pastry. Fishing with Tony was a great experience for us and even you are 10 km outside of Cooktown you have a lot of beautiful places to go. We stayed 5 days and enjoyed it very much and had a great time with our hosts. If we were back in the area we would definitely stay there again. But be aware that the toilet can be outside of your room. For us it was not a problem.
- Iwona (10/5): Cooktown holiday. - Our stay at Paperbark Retreat was unforgettable.
Tony and Sue made us very welcome and we felt like a part of the family. They gave us the advice regarding places of interests and prepared very tasty breakfasts and dinners.

Also only 3 km from the airport to make Cape York trip. Nothing not to like
- Melaney (10/5): Exceptional -
- Fred (9/5): Cooktown is a little oasis in far north Queenstown - Although the resort was 15Km out of Cooktown, one would need a vehicle to visit Cooktown anyway. The surroundings were exceptional and we were greeted with coffee and cake on arrival. On one night we took the availability of dinner at the resort. It was nice to be with the hosts Sue and Tony to hear about local events in Cooktown. Nothing
- Cheryl (10/5): Exceptional -
- Noelene (9/5): Very enjoyable and relaxing - Breakfast was excellent and varied. Tony and Sue were excellent hosts and went out of their way to ensure our stay was enjoyable. Nightly home cooked meals were great. Nothing
- Angela (6/5): - Sue & Tony were very hospitable and helpful in letting us know about things to see in the area. It is obvious they have put a lot of time and effort in getting the property to the standard it is. Breakfast was excellent. Having access to streaming services was an advantage. We had our own shower but were not aware we would be sharing a toilet with another room until we arrived. Other accommodation properties stipulate if an ensuite is included. Had I known at the time of booking we would have to share a toilet I wouldn't have booked. I assumed our room would have basic tea and coffee making facilities and a small bar fridge to keep our water cold but it didn't. There was a communal fridge (I recall) located on the other side of the homestead where we could put things in but we would have preferred a bar fridge in our room. This wasn't mentioned on the list of amenities so obviously was my fault for not noticing at the time of booking. Now we are aware of what retreats offer we will be more careful to book.
- Helen (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely property, clean and comfortable room, good breakfast 🥞 friendly and welcoming hosts.
- Robert (10/5): Brilliant. - Lovely setting. Very comfortable room. Great hosts with local knowledge and advice. Nothing.
- Keith (10/5): Exceptional - Tony and Sue were excellent hosts who made you feel at home. Very caring people that went out of their way to make sure you enjoyed your stay.
- Roger (10/5): You arrive as guests and leave as friends. - Everything about Paperbark Retreat is pristine - the gardens, the pool area, the broad-verandah lodge and the stylish finishings throughout. But what sets this retreat apart is the hospitality. It's a perfect setting for a tranquil getaway and hosts Sue and Tony's local knowledge is invaluable. This touch of FNQ paradise is highly recommended.
- Timothy (10/5): - The beautifully developed property. Lovely owners, nothing was to much for them to help you enjoy their little piece of paradise
- Joanne (10/5): Wonderful, didn’t want to leave but would love to stay again - Absolutely beautiful setting, peaceful. Tony and Sue are lovely and warm and welcoming, a wealth of local knowledge. The big tables made it easy for everyone to sit together and share information/ stories
