Guest Reviews
- Lana (6/5): - Ok room for a night/transit. Rundown old fashioned room that could use a lick of paint. Shared bathrooms were dirty. You get what you pay for.
- Belle (6/5): - While the bar is beautiful, the food good but pricey the service lacked during early dinner service. The room was half full and I was never approached for ordering a drink or being assisted in any way. I finally caught a male staff members eye who seemed initially inconvenienced by coming to my single table in a corner out of direct eyeline. I do credit he was quick with my drink and pleasant on delivery. However, the room "host" did not come near me once, even when she served drinks and bread to the table I faced.
Bar staff were great! Be mindful, it is a wonderful local pub and gets loud til close. Be especially aware that the pub does do private functions upstairs near the guest rooms in a beautiful room with balcony, however the rooms are clearly seperated It also holds community events including Oktoberfest and the Celtic Festival so parking can be difficult if the rear area is being used for such events.
The bathrooms are lovely and very clean however the hot water is limited and tepid showers with only the hot water on is not fun! Bring toiletries as none are provided. Towel and foot mat only.
My room was clean and comfortable with a bed, side table. sink and small half table with a stool. The bed was very comfortable and the bedding provided great.
A one night stop worked fine but I would not stay longer.
- Lyn (10/5): - Probably stay again
- Emily (10/5): - I stayed for one night. Was warned that it would be noisy with music and bar guests. It was perfect for me.
Right in the heart of Beechworth. Morning walk was amazing. Everyone one friendly and accommodating.
Shared bathrooms which I didn’t mind at all and was clean.
- Mike (8/5): - Old world charm 👍
- Joe (6/5): - Everything was close by
Rooms could be upgraded
- Tara (8/5): - Great location and good value for money
- STEVEN (8/5): - a comfortable stay in an old hotel with shared bathroom facilities
- Isix (4/5): - This property is very noise to the point I couldn't sleep. I don't think I will come back to stay in the hotel. Room and toilets are okay. Food was good. Staffs are very helpful and polite.
- Mal (6/5): - This is a beautiful classic old hotel. Very helpful staff and good meals. The twin room was clean, but very basic, no tv and a shared bathroom with good showers.
- Scott (6/5): - Great location and you get what you pay for. It’s cheap & cheerful but with live music on all 3 nights, it was challenging.
- Karen (10/5): - What a fantastic place to stay in Beechworth!! A lovely old hotel with very friendly and helpful staff, this place was incredible value. I only stayed one night but will definitely stay here again next time I visit Beechworth. The room was small but comfortable and it's very quiet despite being upstairs at a big pub. The bathrooms are outside the rooms and very clean. Highly recommend!
- John (6/5): - this hotel should not be listed in the Wangarratta area.
It is old-fashioned and quant, and nothing else.
Shared bathroom is the 19th century.
No TV or Internet facility anywhere.
- Sally (8/5): - Unlike many motels, this old hotel offers charm and quirkiness.
- Paul (6/5): - No fan or air conditioner, room was very warm all night.
Separate bathroom was very modern & very clean.
- Sonniah (10/5): - A vibe
- david (2/5): - I have been staying at the commercial hotel since mid 90s
However during my last visit I was confronted by a very angry person cleaning the carpark who was very aggressive and angry
I had to leave as I felt unsafe
I immediately rang the hotel that same evening to report this issue but they said unfortunately nothing to do with us since the car park is shared with the next door Beechworth brewery
This is not the right approach as they sounded totally uninterested in finding out that one of their paying guests had been harassed
At least I would of expected them to follow up with the brewery next door
Won’t be staying again
- Semira (4/5): - Room and property was super cute. Sheets were not changed. I could see stains on them. If you stay in the first couple of rooms they’re located right next to the staircase coming up from bar area and are loud and smelly when they smoke down there. Bathrooms were ok considering they’re shared. I didn’t see any security cameras on the hallway where the rooms are but didn’t experience any safety issue over 1 night staying there.
- Stuart (4/5): - Cold showers no pressure, intermittent internet
- Chuck (4/5): - Great food, lovely looking venue, and staff were mostly very pleasant, but it was clear that they simply didn't have sufficient (or trained) staff to run the hotel; for example, there never seemed to be any staff specifically assigned to the dining room, and we had to actually seek staff from the adjacent bar to get service during dinner. The shared bathrooms (some of which were not in full working order) were left for at least 1-2 days without being tidied or having loo paper refilled. And when we checked out, the staff member who was drifting around seemed confused as to why we felt we needed to hand our key to anyone. We probably won't stay here again on our next visit.
- Michael (6/5): - Some issues with water pressure and temperature in the showers. Otherwise, staff were wonderful and extremely helpful
- Laura (6/5): - I liked the area it's very pretty the hotel was spacious and the mirror and sink came in use. The area was open and people used the toilet that was shared and forgot to close the toilet door would of being okay except had my daughter who is 11 with me. The hotel was big. It had a portable heater and air conditioner.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Twin room. Bed along the window which blocked the sink and mirror. Had to hop onto the bed to wash etc. Main light was not working. Kettle but no cups or even much of anything for what you pay for. Communal toilet and bathroom. Was clean but could do with a makeover.
- Jason (8/5): - Comfortable accommodation, warm rooms and the band was EXCELLENT!!
- Natalie (6/5): - It’s an old historical hotel which is lovely. Everything if clean and the staff are helpful. But I wish I’d known they play live music downstairs before I booked. More importantly, I wish that I had known that the bathroom facilities were shared.
- Larry (4/5): - We didn’t stay as they were closed for cleaning and told we would be given a refund. We had to get other accommodation. This was either the venue’s fault or Wotif there needs to be a full refund given ASAP
- Greg (8/5): - It was suitable for me for one night stopover
- John (8/5): - Tanswell is a good hotel!
- Peter (8/5): - Loves this pub and accommodation. Great atmosphere and feel. Accommodates basic but no complaints about that, except that I didn’t have a hot water shower in three days. Unless you shower early you’ll miss out on a hot one
- Petrina (10/5): - It was quirky with loads of character and history.
- Anne (10/5): - This was a lovely stay. Great food & atmosphere. Had a cool band playing & fireplaces all going in each area in the pub. A great stay.
- James Hamilton (6/5): - Staff were thoughtful and helpful.
- Colin (6/5): - Friendly staff
Clean room
Whole place needs a but of upgrading
- Mike (8/5): - Very noisy band
- Mike (8/5): - It was okay
- Ashlea (6/5): - The transwell was a good place to stay it was a bit noisy and the bed wasn't very comfortable
- William (8/5): - The appearance and age of the hotel was very pleasing to us. It would be great if the rooms received an uplift. The music could be turned down a notch after 9/ 10 p.m.
- Geoff (10/5): - Lovely old building.
The window in my room wouldn't stay open. Cold showers.
- Leah (6/5): - A beautiful old historic building which could do with a little TLC but very welcoming staff and great location being positioned right in the centre of town.
- Keven (2/5): - Don’t bother with this one. No air conditioning no ceiling fan. Only a small pedestal fan. 35° temp during the day made the room like a sauna. Did not cool down overnight even though a cool change came through and outside temperatures dropped to 18°. This place continued to cook me all night. Massive holes in fly screen mesh allowed bugs to come in all night. Window opening mechanism was broken and window held open with an old piece of timber wedged under the sill. Definitely one of the worst places I have ever stayed. Staff are friendly. Location is good. Sure it’s cheap but suggest you pay a few more dollars so you can actually get some sleep.
- Andrew (8/5): - The accommodation was fine clean sheets and comfortable bed however the meal we had a charcuterie board was just meat and capers maybe google it.
- Jo (8/5): - It is an old pub that still has its character. The furnishings are to my taste. The bedroom for one was sufficient and having my own basin and mirror was helpful. Do not be put off by the communal bathroom, it is quite modern and clean. Friday night was loud outside until about 1am but that really is to be expected by young revellers. The pillows were thin and difficult to induce sleep. Overall a pleasant stay. Next time I'd take my own pillow.
- Kerrie (10/5): - Clean and comfortable and reasonably priced with friendly and accomodating staff. Thank you.
- Miriam (8/5): - It’s a very basic hotel. It’s conveniently located in the Main Street. The live music was good. It’s a lively pub, so quite noisy until about 1am.
- Melissa (8/5): - Great with friendly, welcoming and helpful staff. Clean room and comfy bed. Good food and local wine.
- LANXUAN (8/5): - The owner was such a lovely vibe and a good bloke and made us feel at home even it’s not a perfect place. Might wanna fill up the shower gel in the 3 bathrooms as there were none. Might wanna slightly improve the WiFi reception, too. I was really confused about the size of the bed as I booked a “twin” bed for 2 ppls and it turned out to fit only 1. We were so tired and had quite an awkward time trying to fit and half of my body was stuck in between the wall and the side of the bed, and no I pretty much didn’t sleep at all but still have to fake a smiling face to my bf. Turned out to be my bad- a twin bed IS a single bed. LOL. The place was in an absolutely beautiful classical style and was surrounded by lots of scenic Victorian houses which we did not see much in Canberra. Local residents here were so friendly and always greeted us with a smile. The steak curry pie opposite the hotel was amazing. Will definitely come back to Beechworth again in the future~
- Fergus (10/5): - Great friendly staff at Tanswell's! After a mixup with Expedia booking a single room instead of a double, the staff at Tanswell's were very accommodating in finding another room for us at extremely short notice. Lovely atmosphere and excellent food and music. The staff really go above and beyond to give you a great experience, will definitely returning again.
- Mr Roderick I (8/5): - Excellent base to ride great bike trails. Hotel is quite old Australia style but rooms were clean. Bathroom facilities not in room but very convenient and very clean. Excellent value and exactly as we expected. Highly recommended for one night stay. Beechworth is the most beautiful town. Worth a visit
- Diego (6/5): Messy and noisy - We chose this place because it was the cheapest available in Beechworth. We knew we would not expect much, but really the place disappointed us. Of the two communal showers available, one was leaking and the floor was a mess. Being on a Saturday evening we expected some noise, but it was much worse than expected, our room was just above the place they were playing hard rock live music. The music was not bad, but well, we wanted to rest, not dance. After the music, was over (about midnight), there were noises until about 1:30am.
- Alan (6/5): - I had a great stay, the staff were very friendly. I booked a single room with shared bathrooms for a two night stopover. A very basic room, but if all you need is a bed and shower in the morning, it was sufficient. Also restaurant was open Monday night were many others were closed
- Bryan (8/5): - Great value
- Stephen (4/5): - The property is very rundown very noisy in the room till 2 am
