Guest Reviews
- gordon (6/5): - No staff on site for check in. Email is sent out with access code for front door. Many confused. charger hook ups not working so difficult to recharge your phone and devices
- Marco (2/5): - Mold, broken facilities, and filthy bathrooms. Avoid this place at all costs!
We stayed here recently and I strongly advise other travelers not to book this hostel.
The sleeping capsules themselves were okay small but expected for the price. The light worked fine, but the power outlet inside the capsule didn’t, so we couldn’t charge our phones.
The main issue, however, was the state of the shared bathrooms, which was absolutely unacceptable.
• The shower silicone joints were yellow and black, while the ones around the rest of the bathroom were completely black with mold.
• The windows couldn’t be opened, so all the steam and moisture just stayed inside, making everything damp and musty.
• The bathroom floor was constantly wet, with visible dirt and hair that clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a long time.
• There was even a slug crawling on the ceiling, which was extremely unpleasant to see.
• The toilet seat was broken, and the white tiles had turned brownish from layers of grime.
I didn’t personally check the other bathrooms, but judging from what we saw, it’s hard to imagine they were in better condition.
When we went to the reception in the morning, no staff were present. On the desk there was a small empty plastic bag that looked suspiciously like it had contained illegal substances, which didn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Additionally, there were empty alcohol bottles left in the hallway, adding to the overall feeling of neglect.
We contacted Expedia for a refund and
- Manuel (4/5): - It was very loud. In the whole House und around. The cleaness in the bathrooms were nit good.
- Elston (4/5): - Cheap, bed was okay, bathrooms need attention, other guests were off-putting
- Tessa (10/5): - The space pods are AWESOME!!
The bedsheets and pillows are clean, beds comfy and (visuallly) private!
The rooms and grooves around the bed could use a vacuuming typical of hostels, and our booking for two sadly only equipped us with one towel to share, so that was less than ideal. Kitchen is not too equipped, there were espresso pods but no cups.
Also, important to note there is NO parking available. There are two nearby Qpark lots but check the hours as the nearer, and cheaper one, is locked so if you need after hours arrival or departure, you will have to use the Christchurch Qpark which is fairly pricey (overnight was 51€....could be a bit cheaper if you are able to pre-book) and a 10 minute walk to Astra.
Note: the rooms are up 20 steps per floor, and the bathrooms are in the basement - counting the three steps into the top pod it was about 50 stairs down from our 2nd floor bunk room to the bathrooms...
- Ryan (2/5): - Booked this as the pods seemed like a cool idea vs a typical bunk situation. Unfortunately the air flow in the pods is so poor that it’s difficult to sleep without the door open. The room was so hot and humid that my partner and I were soaked in sweat all night as well.
I booked a locker to keep our valuables in for a supposedly refundable €20. When we left in the morning the property manager was not there. I hung the locker key in the locker, sent a photo to the owner asking for the €20. It’s been about a month and I still haven’t received a response.
Bathrooms were disgusting and my 5’2” partner barely had enough room to sit on the toilet because the room is so narrow. Someone smeared sh*t all over the toilet paper roll and it was still like that when we left.
I’m not one to complain typically. I’m aware that hostels are affordable for a reason and don’t expect much. But this was a terrible stay.
- Cher (6/5): - Not a lot of privacy but ok for a hostel
- Gar (8/5): - Decent, clean, liked the self contained pod capsules
- MARK (8/5): 2 nights in a Pod! - We had a great 2 day stay, was meet on arrival. Obviously this is a place to sleep only so we paid a deposit for lockers to keep our kit safe. Problem, no receptionist on a Sunday and cleaner could only refund for one locker. Contacted hostel on the Monday through WA and problem solved, bank transfer. Thankyou for that!!
Pods were clean, bathroom clean!
Only negative was the USB points in the Pods didn't work and they were extremely warm, door had to remain open. Overall a positive experience!
- Claire (8/5): - We had a great time, we were attending a concert at Croke Park so it was perfect for putting our head down without paying a fortune. Amenities were all as described. I definitely would return.
- louise (6/5): Check in needs improving - The hostel was as expected and for what we paid it was good. It was clean, fresh bedding and towels provided and in the pods felt quite spacious and safe. The location was also good.
The thing that let this down was the no communication prior to check in advising how to check in. We tried to make contact with the hostel and the phone number did not exist leaving us worrying that we were having to find somewhere else to stay and the cheapest available accommodation in Dublin was over £500. After lots of Google searches we found a number you could WhatsApp and luckily we got our details to check in and access the building. I would say this is something that needs improving.
Also the phone charging points in the pods didn’t work and there are not many power outlets.
Overall, you get what you pay for and wasn’t a bad experience
- Geraldine (6/5): - Pod was comfy but very open. Linen clean small towel provided and shower clean. No cups to makr hot drink though. Thomas the night man was a good laugh and helpful.
- Juan (10/5): Perfect stay - We loved this place , there was minor issues that can easily get fixed, like putting a lock on the pods that way the traveler can comfortably leave things there without having to worry about things getting stolen, also if you oversized person restroom is not big enough , installing small fans inside pods would help massively because the air coming from mirror is not enough , other than that restaurants across the river temple bar is 8min walk
- Hanah (4/5): - Pod layout means you they are very hard to climb in and out of and makes uncomfortably close with other guests doors. Showers and toilets located in same room, toilets so close to the wall you have to sit on the side to use them. Arrived and we hadn't been booked in - took some time to find the email with our booking.
- Louis (8/5): - Cheap, easy and central enough to make it worth it low key
- Erin (6/5): - USB ports didn't work. Only one towel provided despite us being a group of two. Friendly staff.
- Destinee Nicole (10/5): - Pods were perfect! Fit 2 people. Bathrooms were clean, even soap was available! Just ask for extra towel if needed! Recommend for small traveling and a few days! Definitely would stay again. Staff is nice and accommodating. Location was awesome very close to Temple Bar!
- Tony (8/5): - Electrical outlets don’t work in the pods.
- Robin (6/5): - For one night it was ok, but not more.
The pods were too hot during the night.
They should put a better AC into them.
- Amanda (4/5): - The staff at Astra Hostel were kind and helpful. The location of the hostel is ideal/close to the city center. It was very convenient to be able to leave our stuff before check-in.
The staff arrived only at 10am for checking out - not a problem for us, but for anyone with an early flight, be sure to mention this to the staff.
The pods did not lock, nor was there anywhere in the pods to lock personal belongings. Moreover, the bathrooms are wet on the ground and were only cleaned once during our 3 day stay.
- Dafydd (4/5): - This hostel has as many toilets as my 3 bed house. Much of the construction is poor - front door hits a metal box loudly as you go in, bathroom layouts mean if you're slightly above average height or weight you might struggle to actually use the toilet. Charging in our pod worked for the first night but not for the second, which messed us up for the day after. Safety deposits do not work, key for lockers were not offered/I could find no instructions to access them, so you cannot put your clothes anywhere but your pod. Having to sleep in the pod with our wet clothes on the bed from the rain was a pain. If you are 6ft+ you will probably struggle to extend fully in the pod. The advantages were location wise it was good, cheaper than most others in the area. It's only about a 10-15 minute walk to the temple bar area/O'Connell street etc. But you will have to walk past a fair few crackheads on the way, they were harmless during our visit but I can imagine they could cause trouble.
The owners should take a couple of pods out from each room and put a bathroom there for each floor, it would be much improved, I very much doubt they would do that though
- minesh (8/5): - No
- Ellen (2/5): - We thought the pod idea might be fun but with parking way too far away we didnt stay. Wasted our money.
- Yemisi (8/5): - I liked the pod!
- Neil (2/5): - Phone chargers in the pods don't work. Only toilet is on the ground floor. No lockers. Pretty poor to be honest.
- joel (10/5): Irlande dodo - Le séjour a été sympathique. Le logement est facile à repérer. Bon système de sécurité. J'ai pu me reposer tranquillement.
- Darren (4/5): - Basic, small, noisy, no facilities
- Keiran (6/5): - As a hostel, you get what you pay for. The sleeping pods are a unique experience and quite comfortable, but they can be noisy when you move. The property should consider adding lockers for guests to store their belongings, even if there's a small fee, as it's better than leaving luggage in unsecured pods or on the floor. The communal room would benefit from a sink for washing dirty dishes instead of having to go to the toilets. We had to do this twice because dirty cups were left out by other guests. Our main issue was the noise from other guests coming back at night, which woke us up at 1:30 AM due to loud talking and banging.
- Khet (2/5): - Not safe, no locks to your dorm,
No place to hand clothes, no chair to sit,
Not like a hostel
- Jess (6/5): - The individual pods were ok - clean etc. But our pod was on the second floor and the shared bathrooms were on the ground which wasn’t very convenient. And appreciate this isn’t necessarily down to the hostel, but the people we shared a room with woke us up multiple times when drunk and returning and talking and laughing. We didn’t sleep on the second night.
- Nicolas (2/5): - The hostel doesn't have a reception nor staff, you get a code to a capsule in a room with 8 capsules. People in the room were occupying all the capsules In the room on arrival ignoring if it was theirs or not. You can't manage a hostel like that.
- Vanessa (10/5): - Staff was very quick with responses when we arrived and needed the code for the door, pod was very cosy and clean, we had a great night. Would definitely stay again :)
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good Hostel, Didn't cost that money. - Booked a double bed for £75 per night, unfortunately it didn't cost that money.
Just a Hostel without any supervisor. The most disappointing thing is that doors in the capsules are impossible to lock, and there's no charging socket inside it, so I had to charge my phone from the socket in the corridor.
Overall its definitely 3/5, clean, not over settled, good placement, but with some issues.
- Joshua (10/5): Great for the price - Best price for being in the city center. Nice and quiet, not really a hostel, no staff really present, but good if you're not looking for the party scene and want to be close to the best parts of Dublin. The pods give great privacy and are actually cozy.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We enjoyed our stay!
- Christian (8/5): - Esperienza positiva, ostello pulito e in rinnovamento, buona posizione.
- hayden (2/5): - Terrible accommodation. When we arrived we were very disappointed to find out there was no signage on the building or any indication of where it is. When we got to the room we were extremely disappointed with the lack of security, there’s no lockers in the rooms and the doors in the pods don’t lock. There’s no staff on property so no sense of security of who’s coming and going. We ended up booking a hotel due to how unsafe this accommodation felt. Definitely would not recommend staying here
- Jade (4/5): Bad experience - The concept as a great potential, but it is not well administrated. There was no hot water to shower on our last day, there was no heat during the whole stay. They also changed the front door code to access the hostel on our last night so we got stuck outside freezing one hour for them to give us a new code. They were also not answering our email and text message and we kindly ask a refund since the place was not excepting right standards.
- colette (6/5): Not very welcoming, just a place to sleep. - The pods are OK, and the location near Smithfield not that bad, but altogether the place was rather desolate, I only met the manager? by chance (and few other residents, well, winter, and a weekend...).
Only three bathrooms/toilets, can be a real problem in high season, especially if they are situated three flights of stairs down... Above all, the whole place was absolutely FRIGID in december, and light in the staircase missing.
- Joseph (4/5): - This is a room with three stacks of pods, a few tiny bathrooms, and WiFi. Its WYSIWYG. Don’t expect much and you won’t be disappointed. The location is ideal and getting in is a breeze.
NO VAYAIS!
- Whitney (4/5): - We were not given the check in code or any directions for how to enter the building and emailed and called with no answer for a couple hours until we were finally let in. There is no staff at all in the building so if you need any help you’re out of luck. The pods are literally flimsy plastic boxes and there is no heating in the entire building so it’s very cold all day. The bathrooms started out ok but cleaning staff must come very irregularly because by the end of our two day stay there were trashed and out of toilet paper. I have stayed in regular and pod hostels before and haven’t had issues but this one was not worth the price.
- Jc (8/5): - Thank you so much will keep visiting again
- Hugh (10/5): - Nice central and private
- Elianq (8/5): - Lovely stay, fun little space pods. But no games / towels provided so bring your own! Over all very comfortable and easy stay. They let us go in earlier than check in as we had an early flight, that was v good.
- Nadia (8/5): Nice stay - Cozy stay in a “space capsule”. No towels even though it said in the description when booking. Nice central to everything
- Kathleen (6/5): Better communication needed - The place didn’t have towels as listed. The check-in message had two contact numbers listed in addition to the app, which was confusing. When I asked the hosts through all three contact methods if I could leave luggage at the hostel while exploring the city, I didn’t receive a response. Most hostels offer a secure place to store luggage, and it would’ve been nice to see this option. That being said, the place was easy to find, the pod was clean (and a cool way to get privacy in a hostel), and we were thankful for a last-minute booking at such a reasonable price. I understand they just recently opened, so hopefully all kinks will be worked out soon.
- Samuel (6/5): Overnight Stay. - Accommodation was clean & well maintained. Pod was spacious & comfortable. No chairs/stools were provided in the room. Nothing provided on which to hang your clothes or wet towels. The toilets are two flights of stairs down which is far from ideal. Two toilets/showers combined are available with another under construction. A shower being used rules out the availability of toilet, again not ideal. Overall more thought needs to be put in to make a stay more user friendly.
- Oleg (10/5): good hotel for a few nights stay - We were looking for a hotel to stay for one night and walk around the city. We just needed a place to sleep. This is a great place for that. It's like a hostel but you have a separate capsule in room. It fits two people. You can sleep closed well inside and no one bothers you. They just opened business. Everything is new and clean. They new in business and have some issues with service but have good communication, trying help, and they are trying to make the service better. This good for one or couple who travel with limited budget. I Recommend.
- Lea (2/5): - Buona posizione. Centro raggiungibile a piedi in 15 minuti.
- Emiliano (10/5): - Great located, clean and silent, excellent price and place
