• Maree (10/5): Outstanding place to stay - lovely location, and a delightfully novel apartment. - Beautifully presented space with lovely Japanese aesthetic. I loved the meditation space the most. Lovely place to stay. Many thanks! I have no complaints at all - only thing we had an issue with was parking - couldn't find a space in the designated parking area but managed to find a carpark in Whistler Street and parked there no problem.

• Lesley (5/5): - Overall good, bed was comfortable but VERY hard to get out of as it was so low. STEPS up to the flat, a big no for us as we are older, would never have booked if we had known this. And would be nice to see the view and open a window. Needs a lift. Needs a toaster.

• Traders (9/5): the apartment was picked based on the location which was a 10 out of 10 - the only dislike was the amount of light that comes through the pull down things, definitely made it harder to sleep.
• Lans (9/5): Stunning apartment, perfectly located! - Absolutely stunning apartment right in the heart of Manly over looking the beach. Could not be better located. The design makes for a very pleasurable stay... we found ourselves just sitting by the open window chatting and watching the world go by. So relaxing! We loved our stay and are hoping to return - the noise from the building site across the road did start early Friday and Saturday. But we went in to the booking informed of this. Even the Sunday morning started early with a huge fund-raising ocean race voice over.... we just got up and headed down to the beach. It's Manly. If you can't beat them!

• Charmaine (8/5): Place for R&R - Liked the aesthetic of the apartment, especially the meditation room. It’s peaceful when you can hear the waves in the distance. Clear easy self-check in. It was quite pleasant coming to a welcome package. ^^ Conveniently near Coles and the beach. At no fault of the owner, the construction across the road was distressing. Parking is horrible, so better off coming by other means. Place was generally clean, but realised the floor was in fact a bit dirty/dusty.

It is just across the street from the beach, easily accessible to main shopping area. The decor is beautiful and thoughtfully furnished, yet practical for a beach stay! I was worried about the construction across the street, but apt was quiet.

Unique decor gives the appartment a memorable.l look and everything in the appartment is good quality and feels new. Two things to note and both out of the owner'scontrol. It's on the third floor without a lift. Fine for us but worth people knowing. Secondly... unfortunately the appartment is next to a major building site (and will be for at least another year). A steady stream of lorries starts in the early hours and work continues all day.

• Alison (10/5): I didn’t stop smiling - The Ryokan - Zen, is truly a tranquil haven with an interior that just calms and soothes the mind and soul. It is a very special space with superb design and an incredible view. Dan and Chi are wonderful hosts and will go out of their way to assist you and make your stay the best it can be. You will be close to all the shops you will need and the Wharf is just a nice stroll away down the Corso. The bed is so comfy, the sweet seating area off the bedroom is wonderful with a stunning view to never tire of. The sunrises are spectacular. Zen is so close to the beach you can go in bare feet. Manly is a beautiful place where life gets going at 5.30am and running, yoga, boxercise and volleyball on the beach is all part of the norm. It’s such a relaxed, laid back, friendly place with cool vibes, trendy coffee houses, yummy breakfast bars and beautiful restaurants. There are so many costal walks and sea pools to swim in too. Try out the surf school too, Thomas was an amazing instructor. Round the corner is a fab healthy food cafe, I absolutely recommend the Macro Bowl. Don’t hesitate to book, even with the construction work going on nearby, you will love your stay here! Nothing to not like.
• Liane (8/5): A beautifully presented apartment with a fantastic location. Must be fit to get up the stairs. - Location was directly across from the beach and once we raised the Shoji screens the view was spectacular. The beds were extremely comfortable and the apartment decoration was lovely. Having a parking permit was fantastic and we managed to get a park only one block away. We were met at the organised time, and our bags were carried up to the room. The apartment was very clean and some snacks and a few drinks were complimentary. The trek up the stairs was off putting as we are in our sixties and not the fittest specimens. Our younger visiting children didn't find them too bad. There was no comfortable seating in the lounge area, just a window seat with uncomfortable cushions and 3 wooden chairs. The crockery provided was beautiful but there wasn't enough. 3 of us staying but only 2 "dinner" plates which were not big enough to hold a meal. No toaster supplied because of previous problems with it setting off the smoke alarm, which meant we were too nervous to cook the steaks we were planning on. The bathtub/shower was difficult to enter and exit for us, but was fine for our daughter.

• Greg (10/5): Beautifull Japanese inspired stay on the beach at Manly - This property was in an excellent location right on South Steyne beach. The apartment was Japanese inspired with interesting features throughout, from the elevated bedroom nook to the secret sitting room with beautiful views of the beach. The kitchen and bathroom were well stocked for a short stay, and the hosts left snacks and drinks. This was a perfect couple's stay in Manly. Thanks to the hosts Chi and Dan for making our stay seamless. Just be aware that the apartment is on the 3rd floor and it is a walkup. However, our kind host, Dan met us and helped with our luggage. Brilliant hosts.

• Leoni (10/5): Relaxing Japanese retreat right on Manly Beach - One of the owners met us outside of the property to hand over the keys and explained how everything worked. They even had a gift basket full of edible goodies ready for us upon arrival. (thank you) The location of the apartment was perfect, right across Manly beach and the views from the apartment was fantastic. Every morning I'd sit at the window seat and watch the sun come up with a cup of tea. The apartment was within easy walking distance to Coles (450 m walk) and other amenities. Don't bother hiring a car for your stay, yes there is a parking permit for you to use, but Manly beach is so busy and with construction going on you will be hard pressed to find a parking spot. Manly Ferry is only a 7 min stroll from the apartment and at $1 pp very economical and budget friendly if you want to travel into the city, if you want to explore more you can then hop onto a train in the city, which again is only $1 pp. The apartment is spotless and beautifully decorated and exactly as per the photos. There is a kitchen for you to cook small, easy meals for 2-3 people, but don't expect to cook up a storm for a big crowd. Think quick salad, easy pasta dish or some omelets. There is a small bar fridge (big enough for us) and a microwave. The bathroom was clean and had everything you'd need; we shared it between 4 females (plenty of mirrors around the apartment to do your makeup). Beds were super comfortable and spotless (linen smelled beautiful and clean). The overall feel of the apartment is sophisticated modern, meets Japanese health retreat spa. The apartment is almost perfect and I'd highly recommend staying here, so this is not really a "what I didn't like" column, more a "this may be helpful to other travelers" paragraph. I booked the apartment despite knowing the below things in advance, because I felt the apartment suited the needs of our family of 4 and it did. I would definitely book this place again. The noise, as mentioned in the adverts there's construction going on right next to the apartment. Although I was up early every morning before the noise started (so didn't worry me too much) the street cleaning truck started to do my head in by day two. He swept the road every 5-10 minutes in a continues loop from 7am till 5 pm. So bring your earplugs (the owners kindly supplied some). The construction site itself was not that noisy and on the weekend noise was minimal to almost nonexistent (and that pesky street cleaner doesn't work on the weekend). The stairs deserve a mention, the apartment is on level 3 (as mentioned in the adverts) and although I am fit, by day two the novelty of running downstairs to open the door multiple times for two teenager's throughput the day wore off. We tried to work the intercom system, but it wouldn't open the door downstairs, plus I figured I needed the exercise to run up the stairs so I didn't ask the owner to fix it. Lastly not so much a didn't like but a suggestion, the apartment has a washing machine we used daily, but no way of drying the clothes once washed. I fixed this by popping the items on the drying rack provided and sticking the floor fan on high fan, the clothes would be dry by the morning, however beach towels are difficult to dry and with three people going to the beach every day a dryer/washer combo would be appreciated.

As a middle aged couple we realized that we were not nearly flexible enough to get in and out of that low bed, but that’s on us!

Ryokan - Zen absolutely made a great weekend unexpectedly amazing The key situation! Very difficult to open the top lock. My fiend stood outside for 15 mins trying to get in. I messaged Chi to ask Dan to come back as I couldn't get in either after initial check in. Dan just thought I'd locked the keys inside but I actually had them on me, just couldn't open the door. This was the only minor irritant and feedback that we could provide...maybe change the locks or WD40 it!

• Christopher (10/5): Beautiful, relaxing, and innovative holiday flat in the BEST LOCATION in Manly! - Chi's 'Ryokan' is a wonderful little flat in the PERFECT location in Manly. Clearly, a lot of care was taken to design this place and it was a treat for us to stay here. Chi was great with communication and Dan helped us during check-in and check-out. I had no worries during this stay and would recommend it to anyone. It was fine for us, but the 3rd floor location without disabled access (stairs only) might need to be clearly indicated for some guests with mobility needs. There was a lot of construction in the area, but it did not disturb our night's rest.

The suppled snacks, drinks and personal care products are way above anything we expected. Able bodied people can negotiate the various levels. However the multiple levels e.g. the platform as you enter the lounge area could pose a falls risk. Shower in the bath was very slippery and extreme caution needed to be taken especially getting out of the shower/bath.

• Leanne (7/5): Great location, comfy,clean, great hosts - Location , cleanliness , communication with hosts. Noisy due to construction across the road and unfortunately during the stay our privacy was disturbed by workmen outside our windows meaning we were unable to use the bathroom sometimes
• Dave (7/5): Great area but beware the major development outside and the lack of a lift to the 3rd floor - The property is in a great location However there is major development across the road so very noisy. No air conditioning as said in description, there was some electric heaters to plug in when cold.There is no lift and the property is on the 3rd floor so older people will struggle with luggage. The apartment has been refurbished however the quality of the finish is poor. The organising of the pick up for the key was also not good we had to wait for the husband to arrive back from central Sydney to let us in. They also said we didn’t book a 2bedroom apartment and after showing them the details they opened up the 2nd bedroom. On the whole not the sort of stay we are used too.
• Sonya (5/5): Passable - Great position in Manly. Requested an extra bed - was advised this would cost an extra $80. We were provided with an airbed that deflated. For a $490/night room + $80 for airbed - expected extra bed to be at least a fold out. We felt like we were camping. The airbed was so uncomfortable, it could not be used. Additionally, there were no lounge chairs to sit in - just cushions on the floor. Rooms were not very practical. One bathroom was OK but in order to get a hot shower, they had to be taken 30 minutes apart to allow the hot water system to refill - as per sign near the bathroom. This was very impractical. Also, be aware that the room is on the third floor with no elevator and one key. We found ourselves walking up and down the stairs to let each other in. Additionally, requested a flat pillow - was not able to oblige. Spent the final night in Manly at the Sebel. We had plenty of hot water, a comfy bed, a flat pillow, was located on the waterfront - and it was cheaper!

Excellent amenities. Close to the beaches. Easy walk to restaurants. Convenient location. Noisy location (but would be the same anywhere in this location) lots of construction work nearby. Early morning noise so need earplugs for a lie in!
• Miranda (9/5): Superb - The location of this room was truly something special. Walking distance to the beach and market and at night you can hear the waves on the beach . The hosts could not do more , helping with our bags up and down the steps, a welcome gift for the hubbies birthday and mini bar provided complimentary ( they also had a gift for the kids) it was a lovely room to stay in. Thank you I would suggest that in the advertising for the room it needs to be clear there is NO lift and that you are 3 flights of steps up to the room. This made it a challenge with the small children. I would also suggest on the window in the second room have some kind of lock. Due to the pipe that runs out that large window, it does not lock, and it slides up extremely easy. It made me quite anxious as the kids loved looking out to the beach through that winow, but they could easily get out of it, and you are 3 stories up. ( I would hate for something terrible to happen)
• J.m. (9/5): Superb - Staying at the Ryokan was such a treat. We loved the location just across the street from Manly beach -- it's easily walkable to everything you might want to do, the living area has a great view of the beach, and opening the windows fills the apartment with the sound of the surf. The interior design is every bit as beautiful as it looks in the photos, and the futon bed was extremely comfortable. It's a 3rd floor apartment, so it did get a little warm, but the portable A/C helped immensely to keep the bedroom and meditation room cool. Wifi was excellent for working remotely. The hosts Chi and Dan were so kind and accommodating, providing snacks, beverages, and local recommendations. Chi even left a handwritten welcome note! If I had to nitpick: The kitchen table chairs and living room floor cushions weren't super comfortable for ~8 hours of computer work. We would really have appreciated a couple of more supportive chairs or extra cushions. We were also a little surprised that there were no chopsticks in the kitchen!

• Petr (9/5): Great place right on the beach - The location is fantastic, just across the road from Manly Beach. The communication with the host was prompt, checking in and out was very easy, we were allowed to check in an hour earlier which was great. The apartment is very clean and has a nice view, we were checking the surf at Manly Beach from the window every morning as we were having breakfast. The parking permit is an absolute life saver in Manly if one gets there by a car. The supermarket is about 100 m down the street, cafes and restaurants very close by. All in all a nice clean place right on Manly Beach. It's not a criticism as the apartment is obviously advertised as a Japanese style apartment so we knew what to expect. However this means that there are split levels and steps which can be a problem for elderly people. My mother had a heavy fall at night as she missed the step down in the living room, luckily she ended up with just some bruises. Therefore I wouldn't recommend this place for elderly people who might also find the 3 flights of stairs challenging.

• Katia (10/5): Great short stay in central Manly - The apartment was in immaculate condition, beautifully designed and the little touches like the hand written note, complimentary snacks and drinks and high quality amenities made for a great short break. The communication with the owner was very responsive and they offered additional information for our stay. Location for the apartment is very central, across from the beach and close to restaurants and supermarkets. Apartment is located on the 3rd, there are no lifts, it wasn't an issue for our family but good to know.

• Jo (8/5): Was a beautiful space, well maintained and clean with a lot of thought and effort put into the desig - So clean and well designed, so close to shops, restaurants and the beach! The bathroom was a touch small and I personally do not like a shower over the bath. The futon lounge was too low and not easy, hard to put your legs anywhere,
