- Aaron (1/5): Toilet malfunction, no response from owner, city will not enforce standards. - We liked the location and the easy entry process. They sent us a code and it worked without issues. The room was clean. The TV worked. The fridge was adequate, the microwave was adequate. The owner initially responded quickly. The title said entire 2 bedroom apartment. This is false, there is only one bedroom and one living room with a sofa. Neither the sofa nor the bed are comfortable to sleep in. We stayed 1 night and it didn't matter to us as we were a couple, if you are a family and expect space for more than 2 to sleep it will not work.
At check in we noticed the fridge handle came off when pulled. We notified the host, they said they would have maintenance fix it.
There was an odd smell in the washroom, we presumed the previous user had not left the air ventilator on long enough (there are no other ways to remove air from the washroom.) We left it on and went out for dinner, there was no smell after. In the morning, when we flushed the toilet it didn't drain, moreover it made gurgling sounds while filling the washroom and living room with sewer gas. We flushed multiple times and tried the plunger without luck. We notified the owner and got the same message: they will have maintenance look after it. We took a video and photos.
We asked them to reduce the price for this horrible surprise. They did not respond, we live within 20km of the location and contacted the City of Kitchener bylaw enforcement, they informed us that it is a matter for the region of Waterloo.
The region of Waterloo informed us that they actually only issue licenses for short term rentals, but do not enforce any standards! They do collect a 400$ licensing fee for issuing licenses and owners must reside at the site to have a valid license. So, if you obtain a short term rental in the region of Waterloo, you have no recourse but small claims court. We will never use this location again, as it reeks and the owner would not compensate for it and has not communicated with us about it for four days now!
The biggest joke is that they sent us a form email asking for a good review because they are a small business. They should be ashamed of how they treat their customers and nobody should use their location.
