They let us leave our bags after checkout as our flight was in the evening. Well, where to start?
Mainly that the Booking.com description had a lot of incorrect details such as:
The address was wrong! It had a completely different address to the actual one. They were in different districts!
The name of the hotel is Posada El Alcatraz not as listed as Casa/Hotel El Alcatraz.
It did not state that they would only accept cash.
Due to the incorrect details our taxi driver spent quite a bit of time trying to be sure we were going to the right place. At one point he rang the number on Booking.com, and, yes you guessed it, the number was wrong!
Also when we did finally get there, there is no name for the hotel. Again the taxi driver had to ask locally for the hotel.
On arrival there seemed to be some confusion about our booking. It turned out we were to stay in an apartment a block away. This was certainly not clear when booking. It was a very basic room but for the price was Ok. However it was on a busy road and therefore noisy with traffic.
It was clean but the bin in the toilet had paper in it (in Colombia it is normal that toilet paper is not flushed down the toilet). I would have expected an empty bin if the room had been properly cleaned!
We booked this room mainly based on the ratings. After staying there I am astonished by some of the high ratings. On delving deeper into them have found others who have had a similar experience with very poor ratings.
On booking we received a lot of correspondence from ‘Max’. I am not sure who he is. He was at pains to say that taxi drivers would tell you that this is not a safe area, but that they are only working on commission and want to take you to other more expensive hotels. He then gave the number of the police ‘in case we needed to contact them’. Not very reassuring! It clearly is an area with problems as every property -shops,houses, restaurants etc are all behind security grilles. Indeed El Alcatraz is permanently locked and you have to be let in or out.
- Nataly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Moriam (10/5): Comfort in Cartagena - I really liked the way the bedding was laid out, a small detail but it was nice to see. You get A/C and a Tv to watch all your favourite shows. The room was simple but nice.
The hammock on the balcony was icing on the cake.
Lovely and caring hosts. Even with the language barrier they still made efforts to communicate and make me feel welcome. Really appreciate the owner allowing me to stay in the lounge after I had checked out.
Thank you for my stay
