Guest Reviews
- Adam (5/5): Quiet but unhygienic - Probably the most quiet place you can get in Airlie Cleaners are non existent, I have a friend who stays there and my bed has been left unchanged as it hasn’t been booked. The reception is a phone call with poor English a bit annoying to get in.

- Nataya (8/5): Amazing will be my no.1 accomodation stay in airlie Beach from now on 😊 - For a backpackers honestly was the best value and place to stay !! Amazing location and amazing price, they had a cleaner daily. I stayed in a 6bed girl dorm the girls were so lovely and respectful if either one was asleep. The staff were so helpful and lovely! Will definitely stay there again!! Honestly better then Magnums and I always stayed at Magnums when up in airlie but can assure you KCs accommodation will be my first choice from now on!! Absolutely amazing !! Thankyou If I had to say anything would be just more kitchen facilities but that's being picky!! I really can't fault it

- Lewis (7/5): Very central, pretty cheap, the whole payment and key system sucked but once figured it out it was better - Price, very central Everyday starting at 6:45, the delivery zone right behind the building has trucks coming and going, beeping, yelling, etc. brutal.
Check in was weird and difficult. But doable for sure
- Erika (1/5): - Not clean at all Cleanness
- Zara (4/5): - I’ve been traveling across New Zealand and Australia for two years, staying in a variety of hostels, and this was one of the most disappointing experiences due to the lack of management, extreme unhygienic conditions, and absence of clear rules.
It’s unfortunate because this property has good potential. The beds are comfortable, and the location is central, making it convenient for travelers. However, these positives are completely overshadowed by the lack of oversight and a mindset that doesn’t prioritize cleanliness and order.
The conditions here entirely depend on the civility and behavior of the guests. In my room, three long-term residents (ironically they are Airbnb cleaners) kept the space in a horrifying state, showed no respect for basic cleanliness or consideration for others. Clothes and shoes were scattered across the floor, the dining table was piled high with their belongings, and the refrigerator, kitchen cupboards, and wardrobes were so full that there was no space for anyone else. The bathroom was even worse, with personal items and open razor blades dangerously scattered everywhere, making it unsafe and unsanitary.
One occupant vaped constantly in the room, creating a foul odor reminiscent of rotting fish. She was loudly talking to her family on the phone inside the room, creating an unpleasant and antisocial environment. Shockingly, the smoke detectors failed to detect the vaping, raising serious safety concerns.
While the cleaner on-site tried his best to manage the property, it was clear he had no support or authority to enforce rules. I felt sorry for him, as he worked tirelessly but couldn’t keep up with the overwhelming lack of cleanliness and order.
It is not the guests’ duty to remind others of basic rules like cleaning up or not smoking indoors. This is the manager’s responsibility to enforce and monitor (oversight) for the benefit of all guests. The tensions escalated when I attempted to clean the area. The clutter and mess were unbearable, and when I tried to organize the space, it led to a heated argument with other guests. This created significant tension in the room, which made the situation even more uncomfortable.
I raised these concerns with the property manager and requested a room change.
Their response to my concerns was dismissive, as they stated:
"You might be a tidy, clean person, so I think sharing a room with backpackers will not suit you. I totally understand everyone has to respect each other, and we already have a rule of strictly no smoking. I will remind them, but other than that, sorry, it is out of our control as we cannot control 24/7."
This response placed the blame on me and dismissed the severity of the situation. While I appreciate that the property manager refunded my remaining nights without hesitation, they need to rethink their approach to managing a hostel. Living in a hostel does not mean living without consideration for others, nor does staying temporarily mean leaving the space in chaos.
Hostels that work well have clear rules, such as no smoking or vaping in rooms, quiet hours after 10 PM, and cleaning up after yourself in shared spaces. These rules need to be strictly enforced to ensure a comfortable environment for all guests. Without them, the experience is entirely reliant on luck – if the guests are responsible, things might work out, but if not, no one steps in to protect other guests’ rights.
The property’s lack of management and oversight is the core issue. Even though one staff member went out of their way to improve the atmosphere by buying a scented candle and room air spray, it shouldn’t fall on a single individual to address such systemic problems.
If this property wants to reach its potential, it needs an on-site manager, additional cleaning staff, and strict enforcement of rules.
