Guest Reviews
- Tara (3/5): Unfortunate experience - Very clean, beautiful view of the sunset, big comfortable bed -Parking was terrible, no spots reserved for guests of the lodge had to compete with pub goers.
-No microwave or kettle in room
-Stained pillows, very outdated decor and old carpet. -Tiniest bathroom ever with request not to use showers unless quickly or run much hot water.
-Broken lock on door, couldn't lock deadbolt just handle of door.
- Told I could not get takeout from the restaurant but were somehow able to accommodate us sitting in, where the waitress made a mistake then charged me full price for her mistake. 2pc fish and chips with a beer cost $48 before tip. Didn't even refill our waters or check in once. Couldn't accommodate takeout because was too busy but restaurant was not busy and they made our eat in meal quickly.
-Nobody there to check us in, had to seek out worker from the restaurant who was confused.
- Allan (10/5): - That there was no TV; that made my stay more relaxing than it would have been. My plan was to flake out & glue myself to the screen. The food was amazing & the view from the restaurant is spectacular.
- Pat (7/5): Good place to stay, and it's close to the water. - The food is OK at their restaurant - nothing amazing (basic bar food). We could hear the bass from the bar in our room at night. Otherwise is was pretty quiet. The staff are super friendly and helpful. The location is great. We could hear the bass from the bar in our room at night.
- mathieu (10/5): -
- Ross (9/5): - The Thursday night jam session in the pub is not to be missed. Great artists and great fun.
- M (9/5): -
- Loreen (9/5): -
- Mariana (8/5): - Staff was very friendly and the restaurant is great! We enjoyed the convenience of staying in a restaurant/pub. The bedsheets appeared unwashed and gave the impression they had not been changed after the previous guest. The toilet was visibly dirty, with a bit of poo. Additionally, the floors had not been swept and were covered in a fine layer of dust. Overall, the level of cleanliness fell below basic expectations for a hotel stay.
- Beth (9/5): -
- Bree (10/5): -
- Dave (7/5): - The location is perfect for watching the sunset
The food was good in both the Pub and restaurant The roon didn't have a tub, just a shower, Im sure I could have asked before booking about having a tub, although the ocean is close by if I needed to go for a swim
- Tom (4/5): The only thing good about it was the food - Breakfast and all the food was grea 1) no heat in the room.
2) stairs were a death trap.
3) no soap in the bathroom.
4) poor locking system on the room door.
5) lousy mattress.
- Paul (10/5): -
- Chan (7/5): -
- Trevor (10/5): -
- Annie (7/5): I will definitely come back again - Closed to the ocean and the pub and restaurant Not lot of Parking.
- yu jing (7/5): -
- Vilma (10/5): -
- Kurt (7/5): - Room was basic and adequate but comfortable. Used room only for sleeping as trip was for fishing. View of water and quiet.
Did not have opportunity to eat at restaurant but based on the number of people enjoying their meals it must be good. Shower could use a pressure balance valve.
- Paul (6/5): We enjoyed the property but a comfortable and uninterrupted sleep is a primary concern for us. - the staff were excellent and really made the difference. We were greeted and the room was ready early so Diane (may have that wrong) called to let me know we could access our room. The service staff were always accommodating and friendly. The restaurant has a wonderful view and atmosphere, something I would recommend. Brunch was good. The regular food menu was pub food which suited the bar but not so much the dining room atmosphere; I suggest having a few items tailored for the dining room only; eg fresh vegetables from local producers, braised or roast chicken, local seafood. The wine list didn't match the pub food; I was reluctant to spend money on a better wine.
The room- the bed was fine and comfortable; more hooks or places to hang clothes would have been useful. Hot water in bathroom sink was great but didn't seem to transfer to the shower; luke warm at best. Tried to keep the window open at night to cool the room but the generator/motor on the adjacent roof kept turning on and would wake us up. Sound from the adjacent room, 3 I think, was like having the occupants sitting in our room. We could hear everything, even when they were talking at a normal level. As a result we did not sleep well at all.

- Jeremy (10/5): Cool, fun retro vibe with an incredible location. - Fun retro vibe with an amazing location. N/A
- nikolas (10/5): -
- Carlin (8/5): -
- Jamie (7/5): - The location is beautiful The sink drain in room 2 needs to be cleaned out.
- Jenn (8/5): -
- Lynda (6/5): Beautiful area but cabin definitely needed upgrading - Did not eat there had kitchen in cabin. Wouldn’t use bath, very old and dirty looking. Iron on patches on the sofa. Really needs upgrading. Floors are not good. Light switches don’t work main light in living room ceiling is turned on by plugging it in and off by unplugging.
- Sandee (7/5): - I liked the staff, the quaintness of the place I was visited by a rat in my room. I get that it’s the tome of year that they find their way in and it’s so close to the ocean.
- Imelda (7/5): -
- Kennedy (9/5): So charming. - Friendly welcome, clean room and good WiFi . Nice coffee and coffee maker. Excellent view. Ran out of water briefly in the middle of a shower. But a minor thing.
- rogal (7/5): We loved the rustic little cabin and the outstanding bartender Browyn at the pub ! - I felt a little mislead about private beach and ocean front! Only with two toddlers the cabin in a parking lot was not ideal. But was informed by staff lots of out of norm events were happening! make cabin 19 less the ideal
- Randy (8/5): -
- Hall (10/5): -
- Sharon (5/5): A little too rustic and dated for the $300 a night. - Didn’t have meals there. The price exceeded the experience. Bathrooms need updating.

- brae (9/5): -
- Jonathan (8/5): -
- Pamela (6/5): - Loved the restaurant! Excellent meal, lovely waitress, rustic charm ambience and view. Room was odorous, humid and hot. We had to sleep with the patio door open despite mosquitoes.
- Snave (6/5): Over priced - Fridge on tge floor, is way to low. If I was a senior it would be terrible to use. Should always be placed on a table for easy use.
Shower faucet was working in opposite direction.
- Russian (10/5): Ten of Ten. - Location, Location and location None at all. Everything was perfect 👌
- lauren (1/5): The pub in the hotel is open until 1am and they had blasting loud (club loud) music all night. My partner went down at 1 - Great location. But not good enough. We left a day early. Old and uncomfortable beds. More importantly, not a proper hotel. Small island, anything goes vibe.
- Angie (10/5): -
- Zachary (9/5): - Magnificent! Property was great. A cool historic hotel on the coast. Hotel run on a somewhat skeleton crew, but friendly and clean. Loved having the pub and restaurant there
- Nenita (9/5): Happy and for sure coming back here in the future - Near the beach.
Food is perfect.
Having good times at the pub at night ( lunch too). Garbage disposal is nowhere to be found.
- Leisha (7/5): -
- yaron (9/5): -
- Dave (7/5): - Great location by the sea.
- Karen (8/5): pleasant room, quiet - beautiful water view It was confusing how to check in. I wasn't told where to find the keys and had to ask at the pub and then the restaurant
- Françoise (8/5): - La localisation, directe sur la plage. L'espace dans les chambres, mais la salle de bain était un peu limite pour 3 personnes. La taille de la salle de bain (petite) et elle aurait eu besoin d'un coup de rafraîchissement.
- Terri (7/5): -
- Liam (8/5): -
- Steve (9/5): Great old heritage place with tremendous view - Fantastic view, wonderful log building, great food and service Nothing
- alison (8/5): Cozy place in a beautiful spot that families of 5 will appreciate, but a little on the rustic side. - The location is truly spectacular. Beautiful views, lovely walk on the rocks of the beach. Classic gulf island vistas. The restaurant was great for dinner and super accommodating to our big group. Cute cabin. Comfortable beds. Very quiet. The sound of the rain on the metal roof was lovely. Even with a pub and restaurant next door, we hardly heard any traffic. Big enough for a family of 5 to sleep comfortably with a small kitchenette for self-catering. It is across the street from the water, but the road is very quiet. Beautiful sandstone formations, arbutus trees, blackberry bushes to pick in the rain. Cozy living room area in the lodge when the restaurant is closed. My eldest child played creepy songs in a minor key on the out of tune piano, and it was beautifully atmospheric. Great for our family for a short stay to connect with other family members camping near by. There's nothing else there, so if you didn't bring breakfast or coffee, it's a drive away. Come prepared. No breakfast options available and no tea or coffee available in the morning in the main lodge. The bathroom door did not close completely. There was also no large pot -- we had planned to cook pasta for dinner as a quick way to feed teens. It rained for the entire time we were there (about 20 hours) and there wasn't really anywhere to hang coats, put wet boots and just a small mat for wet shoes, so our room got a little soggy. I don't mind the rain, but usually in this area places are better set up for it with hangers and mats.
- White-Hill (10/5): -
- Jeffrey (5/5): Great location great pub - Great location. Pub has a million dollar view. Pub servers were excellent Slow kitchen both in pub and restaurant. No air conditioning no tv.
- Sean (8/5): -
- Lisa (9/5): - Good price for accomodations and location
- Dana (8/5): Overall it was an excellent family vacation - Liked the self contained cabin - but there was no orientation when we checked in - we were just given the keys and told where the parking was.
Beds were comfortable and wifi was good. No Extra toilet paper or extra towels in the cabin - there were six of us. There is no toaster in the kitchen or drying rack for the dishes.
There should be wasp traps we couldn't sit outside with food or wine.
The driveway has way too many pot holes - it might be an idea to have extra gravel to fill those holes especially after heavy rains.
- Victor Svenningson (9/5): I hope to come back - The staff were great at all times. We ate dinner there... the food was good. Dinner took almost 40 minutes to come to the table.
- Brian (6/5): Small rustic lodge with restaurant management issues - This is a small rustic lodge with a few rooms over the main dining room.
The room had two comfortable beds and an adequate bathroom,
The room decor was also rustic making a change from a modern hotel/motel.
The location was fine,, by the ocean a short drive from the ferry terminal.
OK for one night to explore Gabriola island by vehicle.
Access by ferry was easy (every 35 mins) but we to wait a sailing on our return due to busy holiday traffice. The Keurig coffee maker didn't work and it was hard to find any staff to help.
Also needed to use the two fans provided to cool the south-facing room.
The focus was mainly on the restaurant and pub, so there a self check in (keys in an envelope).
The restaurant ran out of a number of food items so the selection was limited.
It was also short staffed and one staff member ran the pub single-handedly (she never stopped running)!
It was a holiday weekend and there is little other choices for staying and dining on Gabriola.
Narrow staircase to rooms, so not suitable for mobility challenged.
- Keith (7/5): Beautiful location but lacked support staff. - Great location with beautiful walks. Accomadation clean & tidy. Very quiet surroundings with great views of the shipping lanes. As the only remaining pub on the island, the place was busy especially at meal times. The experience was spoiled though as due to no shows in the staff, the people that had turned up were run off their feet. When we arrived we waited 25 mins before anyone came to our table.
- Colette (5/5): - The location is very picturesque and the restaurant servers were friendly. The restaurant has very limited hours apparently because they can't keep staff. For the time we were there, they were closed until noon. Without having a vehicle, and nowhere nearby to eat breakfast it was very disappointing that they didn't at least offer self-service options with quick breakfast to-go foods like other hotels do.
- Petronella (10/5): Awesome - Friendly staff and excellent location
- gracen (5/5): Not a luxurious place to stay but adequate for what we needed. The pub was absolutely awful! - Generally had the bare necessities but could have used some small things like a bread knife and parer.
- Stephanie (10/5): It gives small island dirty dancing vibes. - It was exactly what we wanted; great ocean views, comfortable place to sleep, quaint dog-friendly cabin, and friendly staff Parking was a little rough but that's it. Place is great
- Berta (10/5): Magnifico - La ubicación excelente y el personal muy amable. Me deje el neceser en la habitación y amablemente me lo trajeron con el coche al ferry .
Detalle muy estupendo
- Edgar (10/5): -
- D (7/5): -
- Sharon (9/5): - Great location. Good restaurant and excellent service.
No air conditioning but we were comfortable with fans
A very laid back atmosphere!! Thank you!
- Ryan (9/5): -
- Arnold (7/5): - Location is great. The restaurant and bar very convenient with a spectacular view of the ocean straight. Staff are very friendly and helpful. A bit old and dated, but that adds to the charm.
- Tara (7/5): Location is great, room suited our needs for one night. Sunset dinner, great food. -
- Shirley (10/5): Gabriola is our favourite island to visit. -
- Geoff (8/5): Great family run establishment in a stunning location. - A great location, and wonderful to stay at a family run pub with character and history, so much nicer than a generic impersonal hotel chain. The place is dated but that is half the charm. We lucked out in that we happened to be there for an open mike music jam session which attracted some local island talent - a wonderful way to spend a summer's evening.
- Summer (10/5): -
- Taina (9/5): - Location and laid back, friendly vibe
- Sophie (10/5): A memorable stay - We absolutely loved our stay at the Surf Lodge! The location is stunning—right across from the beach where we actually got engaged.
What made our stay even more memorable was the kindness of the staff. When they found out we had just gotten engaged, they surprised us with complimentary dessert and drinks to celebrate—it was such a thoughtful and heartwarming gesture. The lodge has such a cozy, welcoming feel, and everyone made us feel so at home.
We’re so grateful to have shared such a meaningful moment in such a beautiful place. We’ll definitely be back! Nothing
- Armstrong (1/5): My husband says that "this is the biggest disappointment ever". - The view was good. Everything else was deplorable. We had a coffee maker in the room but no cups. On the other hand, we had wine glasses with pretty napkins. The view was lovely. And there were enough outlets for our devices. This was the worst place we have ever stayed: old, creaky stairs, dark and dinghy room, We asked where to check in and the woman replied that we should leave our keys in the jar. Not really an answer to our question.
We had been looking forward to this stay very much. The location is nice. No breakfast.
- Marie (5/5): - The history and the location The walls were thin- the neighbour woke me at 7am with a very audible voice -
Wish there had been a microwave for the room.
Room was very warm, left the door open to the hallway so the ac out there could cool down my room.
- Helena (8/5): -
- jerralynn (10/5): Wonderful stay at the surf Motel on Gabriola Island - I love the self registration and the confidence given in letting us check ourselves in. The smell of the nice clean sheets on the bed and of course the Fresh Ocean Air. Nothing comes to mind.
- Jonathan (10/5): -
- Jennifer (10/5): - We had a celebration of life at the lodge and it was absolutely amazing. The catering and food choices was awesome. NOTHING.
- Kelly (9/5): Charming historic stay - Location, location! The authentic old world room. Loved everything
- Bernice (8/5): - Good view, good foods and quiet.
- Leah LaRocke (10/5): beautiful views, great food and Kind, friendly staff - Great location, fun little pub on the main floor. Staying at this lodge was like going back in time and I am all for it! The staff were all so welcoming and friendly.
- Kathleen (10/5): Wonderful, Romantic lodge on the BC coast. - Our visit was to celebrate our anniversary and from making the booking the wonderful staff here did everything to make it special in a very romantic lodge on the BC coast. The staff reserved the best window seat, overseeing the rugged coastline, along with a perfectly cooked roast beef dinner with the biggest Yorkshire bake and delish lemon cheesecake! Little touches everywhere in our room, including locally made island soaps and fresh cream for coffee! Everything was special, giving us a true sense of the beautiful Gabriola island.
- Kurt (1/5): -
- Yan (9/5): -
- Louise (9/5): - The staff were exceptionally welcoming and friendly even though they were very busy. The bed faces the windows, and the light shone through the curtains in the early morning.
- Trevor (10/5): Enjoyable couple of days! Thank you. - Location was sensational. Staff were friendly and helpful
- Mathieu (10/5): -
- Cameron (8/5): - Meals were well prepared and price seemed fair
- Barb (8/5): - Beautiful location, fantastic food & very friendly staff, would definitely stay again.
- Marnie (8/5): Gorgeous view from our deck, rustic, comfortable and well worth the 2-ferry journey from eastern Was - Amazing oceanfront view!
Prime quiet location
Comfortable yet rustic room
Great staff Room was dated but comfortable. We were there at the end of April so the noise from the festive restaurant/pub (Friday kereoke) onsite was not a big deal. It might be if you had your windows and doors open.
- Leanne (8/5): Great location! - The location is fabulous, right on the ocean. I also loved how historical the rok felt. It's like stepping back in time.
- Silvana (10/5): - There wasn't any breakfast
