- Jeanette (9/5): Great experience - beautifully styled, very clean, great host just needed a fan
- Norton (10/5): Excellent location, great host and super comfy - Clean and had everything we could need Hot hot hot -outside but that’s nature not the property
- paul (10/5): Best place I’ve ever stayed - Everything Nothing
- Ali (10/5): -
- Brett (8/5): Vety enjoyable - Quiet, comfortable, beautiful view.
- Lambertus (9/5): Great location to explore White Cliffs - Great underground house, very bright and white, very quiet A bit warm inside the bedrooms, not much Airflow
- Ivana (10/5): Highly recommend Desert Hideway. Host was amazing - Property was fantastic. Great location and staying in a dugout was amazing
- Hoang Ngoc Hanh (10/5): - Amazing host with lots of details and warm welcome; awesome and exotic place to stay; wonderful experience in the outback Nothing
- Momen (8/5): A unique once in a lifetime experience where you live underground in a cave! - Unique style accommodation inside a cave Lack of fans in single beds adjoining kitchen, slow internet
- Sue (10/5): Unique stay in underground accommodation and a perfect host and guide - We self-catered and the cooking utensils and appliances were certainly enough for our need considering we were in the Australian outback. Cold water in the fridge and a very welcome greeting from Sonia,. Nothing to not like - it was perfect. This was our second visit to Sonia's place and she is an excellent guide to the opal fields and beyond White Cliffs. A very exciting two days spent with our French friends who loved very minute of the stay in White Cliff, including the fact that Sonia helped us with extra petrol when the only service station was closed unexpectedly. High recommend a stay at Desert Hideaway.
- Sue (8/5): Fab - We spoke directly to the host beforehand and she was very obliging in accommodating our special requests, which were all about catering, and which is difficult to do in such a remote location. Shade in the outdoor area.
- Susan (10/5): A wonderful experience in a fantastic setting. - We had a bit of trouble meeting the host because Telstra was down and this made communication difficult. But it was all fine in the end. That's the only reason for the sad face review. Same reason for the wifi question. We loved the unique underground setting, and felt really relaxed. It was great fun. The pump for the water was rather noisy for the person in the front bedroom. Not a huge issue, just a comment.
- Lyn (9/5): -
- Ben (10/5): - Amazing place, in an amazing location.
- Andrew (8/5): - The underground experience as amazing No Aircon
- Melissa (9/5): -
- Trisha (10/5): - We really enjoyed staying in the dugout. It was clean, tidy, comfortable and well thought out for guests. I would highly recommend to others.
- Peter (10/5): Wonderful property & wonderful host - a unique experience. - Absolute one of a kind - a real “wow” experience. Despite the remoteness it had everything one would expect from an upmarket city property.
- Judy (9/5): A hidden gem that perfectly reflected our expectations of living in a remote opal mining town. - The experience was wonderful. Communications with the owner of the property were good and instructions to locate the property were excellent, including a video sent to us to let us know the way. This was important as the property is dug into the ground and not visible from the road. Access was easy and the place was bright, welcoming and very comfortable, despite it being hot outside. The wi-fi was good, beds (a few to choose from) comfy and we had no problems with anything.
- Nicole (10/5): Awesome place! So glad I booked it, hubby and son were pleasantly surprised! Thank you Sonia! - Sonia was amazing! Communication was above and beyond. I will be recommending this property to anyone wishing to see a different side of Australia! The underground dugout was clean and comfortable. The bed was comfier than our bed at home. Decorated beautifully and like a home away from home (only underground). Exactly as pictured. Not staying longer!
- Angela (10/5): Highly recommend! - Such a cool experience, very nicely detailed.
- Scott (10/5): - Amazing and unique property Nothing.
- Michael (9/5): Fabulous - A beautiful home. Very clean.
- Warren (10/5): - Sonia was a wonderful host and the view was spectacular, as were the eclectic living quarters.
- Marianne (10/5): A magical place to stay in an incredibly interesting location - We absolutely loved staying here at the Desert Hideaway, and we experienced what we think may well be the best of White Cliffs!!
The dugout was beautiful, spacious, clean and very comfortable. It had everything we needed and more (including a speaker to play music). Designed to allow some natural light in, the dugout has a cosy ambience, even while you are mostly underground. After a week of rallying (for a Cancer Council fundraiser), we also appreciated the washing machine.
Sunrise from the back door and the sunsets from the other side of the hill were spectacular.
The communication from our host, Sonia was comprehensive, giving clear advice on staying locally (such as bringing your own groceries as supplies are very limited in the one general store). She also suggested things to do and gave interesting insights about life in White Cliffs.
Sonia was incredibly warm, welcoming and helpful.
We're so very glad we stayed at the Desert Hideaway. Sonia warned about this, however we were surprised that we had no phone reception at all in White Cliffs, despite using the Telstra network (with another company).
The public phone in front of the heath service (and opposite the primary school) was a welcome way to reach Sonya once we arrived in "town" so she could escort us to her Desert Hideaway and show us around the property.
The internet at the Desert Hideaway worked really well though once we had checked in, making up for the telecommunication challenges we initially experienced.
- Tracy (10/5): -
- Brian (8/5): Awesome dugout! - Great location, looking east to the night sky. Clean and comfortable. Will definitely stay again soon.
- Pauline (10/5): Very comfortable. Home away from home. A wonderful experience to stay in an underground house. - Everything was perfect with the accommodation
- Anita (7/5): Unique experience - Beautiful little house. Unique We couldn't take our heavy vehicle to the door. Had to walk up and down steps from hill behind the house.
There was little airflow Inside. Especially at night
- Linda (10/5): Outstanding dugout experience - Super cool dugout that used to be an old mine. Beautifully decorated. Super comfortable pillow top beds. Fully functional kitchen. Super large bathroom with hot water. Magnificent views in a nice quiet, private location. Sonia was a wonderful host, extremely helpful and went above and beyond to make sure our stay was exceptional. Thank you! Loved everything!
- Allan (10/5): -
- Graeme (10/5): Exceptional -
- Melinda (10/5): Such a fantastic experience, wonderful property and great host - We really loved staying in the dugout, it was clean and comfortable and unique. Sonja was a lovely host. The desert hideaway was brilliant - everything we hoped it would be Just be aware that if you don’t have a 4WD you will be fine to park at the bottom of the driveway if it doesn’t rain but if rain is forecast leave your car at the bottom
- Kafil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dean (10/5): Wonderful - Such a unique experience if you are in Whitecliffs would definitely recommend this, such a cozy house to stay in. Sonia was such a wonderful host. Nil
- Ian (10/5): Amazing - Being welcomed and shown around the premises by the owner N/A
- Martin (9/5): Superb - Upon arrival we were meet at the property by host/owner “Sonja” ….what a delightful young lady. This property is unique, spacious, true to its photos and very welcoming. We throughly enjoyed our stay, it had everything one would want in this house/ location. Would highly recommend. Whilst staying ,Sonja took us out on a tour of the local area and Opal fields, she was very knowledgeable and the tour was well worth doing. Thanks for everything Sonja…. Follow your dreams.
- Gemma (10/5): Exceptional - Great dugout loved it so beautiful and great location and view
- Ashley (10/5): Exceptional - Sonia was very helpful and the dugout was warm and welcoming. Interesting tour of the area .
- Jannaa2 (10/5): A special experience - Have stayed here before and was wowed by Sonia's genuine desire for her guests to fully enjoy White Cliffs, and in the stylish way she has decorated and furnished the dug out. Was wowed again. This time we made sure to stay two nights, to soak up the special ambience. The tin opener was missing -- given the selection at the General Store, a tin opener is pretty important!
- Lindell (10/5): Fantastic! - Loved the views from above the hideaway, such a unique experience
- Simone (10/5): Exceptional -
- Angela (10/5): Unique White Cliffs Dugout - Such a unique property. The underground dugout was really comfy for the two of us and offered plenty of space to relax and cook. The sunset and sunrise were amazing!
Sonia was a great host and gave us lots of tips as well as a ‘noodling’ experience and tour around the fields. Would definitely stay again. The property is faithful to the life of White Cliffs (and we loved that), so the kitchen and bathroom are functional but not fancy. Not necessarily a negative though.
- Andrew (10/5): Your very own hobbit home away from home and the chance to find Opal - Everything. Amazing dugout house with functional internet and lots of room. Amazing location. Sonia the owner was lovely and insightful about the area. Nothing
- Fabien (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gloria (10/5): A unique and interesting experience - Unique experience sleeping in an old mine
Kitchen facilities good
Sonias welcome and tour great
- Christine (10/5): Unique - Sonia (host) was great at communication and showing all that her accommodation offered.

- Murray (8/5): Very good -
- David (9/5): Superb -
- Bettina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carolyn (5/5): I had no idea how creepy and eerie it would be staying underground. It was super hot and only a fan for cooling kitchen - It was clean and the host lovely. Gorgeous sunrise. Locals were very friendly. It was super creepy but that’s just my opinion. The milk supplied went out of date 9 months ago and was lumpy. We noticed the back up supplies stored in a shed where the average temp was 40 degrees.
- Helena (9/5): Superb -
- Allison (9/5): Superb -
- Katrina (8/5): We had a stay that was great fun, mostly thanks to Sonia. Had a great tour around and saw lots of in - Atmospheric accommodation in a dugout mostly underground. Sonia was an amazing host and nothing was too much trouble. Took us around in her own car Not enough drinking water
- Nicholas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Keane (10/5): Excellent we'll be back, loved everything . - The host Sonia was excellent met us and introduced herself and showed us around, explained everything. N/A
- Jerre (10/5): This was a great experience and I would highly recommend it to others! - Everything!
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional - These dwellings created from disused opal mines are unique and very special. Desert Hideaway is comfortable and well equipped, and is a short walk from the basic shop and decent pub. White Cliffs is unlike any place I've ever been, you really have to see this place. Owner was very responsive when we had a small problem. Nothing, it was a unique experience.
- Lesley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sanjai (10/5): Such a rare gem! - The underground house is incredible. By far the most unique and interesting accommodation we have ever stayed in. The surrounding desert landscape is magical. The host Sonia was fantastic, she was so responsive and helpful. There is nothing not to like about the property.
- Michelle (10/5): Perfect spot. - Sonias Dessert Hideaway was the perfect spot for a weekend getaway at Whitecliffs. It had everything we needed, was very clean and is so nice and homely. Sonia met us personally to give us the keys, show us around and tell us about the town. Sitting outside talking in the view was so lovely. Nothing, we were happy with everything
- Saju (10/5): Will do another trip again to stay at the same property - Excellent, clean and host very friendly and supportive.

- Hannah (10/5): Unique. Stunning interia. Exceptional host. - It was a wow! Truely a unique experience to be remembered and retold. The host is an impressive lady who turned a rough cave into an upmarket home. Her tour and stories were fascinating and admirable. Can’t give enough praise for this property and will recommend to everyone. We loved everything.
- Claire (10/5): Great underground house! Beautiful views and the host is wonderful - Absolutely stunning property, very comfortable and spacious.
- Jonathon (10/5): Great experience living under ground, fantastic host. - It was a great experience, the house was beautifully presented and our host was very friendly and helpful. We had everything we needed and living underground was great, good constant temperature and very unique. The pub was spot on, good meals and cold beer, very friendly publican. Nothing at all, we thoroughly recommend this home.
- Shane (10/5): Great place and experiences! And the views were amazing - The place was amazing, Sonya was amazing, I was a pain and booked the room super late (was very lucky it wasn't booked already) and came and found me at the pub.
Was an awesome place even tho we only stayed one night! Would have stayed longer if I could have!! We will be back!
- Greg (10/5): Fabulous experience living in a dug out. - Unique and very comfortable
- Lorelle (10/5): Amazing view and comfortable, unique place to stay. - This home was amazing!! A once in a lifetime experience of being in a dug out home with an amazing view. Very comfortable with everything you could need. The host was friendly and more than helpful. In a remote area this was a beautiful place. More than enough room for our family of 4. Miss 12yo loved her own 'cave room' and Mr 10 loved his open cave bedroom. The main bed was more comfortable than our bed at home! The whole place was styled beautifully. Totally worth spending a little more to stay here.

After letting us in, she showed us around and explained how various things worked in the house. Sonia was very interesting and told us a lot about the town as well as where to find things. She recommended the underground mine tour which was fabulous as well as the white house tour and where to eat. The fact that we only stayed 1 night, it wasn't long enough.
