Guest Reviews
- Aleta (8/5): Retro Retreat was great! - Quirky little old retro apartment right in heart of Darlinghurst. Very comfortable and perfect for those who love something a little.'old school' and great value for money. Some nice touches like wine and snacks left for us. Very easy to get to everything and great communication with Rob & Flavia. Mould in bathroom shower tiles but that's easily fixed
- Juan (5/5): I hope they can fix those things and it could be a great experience and with a veryyy good location. Few min from everyt - I didn’t like anything in the beginning but later in the evening night it became nice and comfortable. It has everything you need. Good water pressure and hot shower. They gave me some complementary food. It was very kind. The entrance could be more presentable. The humidity is not good. I didn’t like the smell inside. Too many mosquitoes, they bites me all night on my first night and I had to use a repellent on my 2nd day and it was ok. They should work more on that apartment and entrance and it could be a beautiful place. If I removed the humidity, and mosquitoes, I could stay there again. It’s an amazing value for the size of the apartment. I had some friends coming and they had the same opinion. They like the apartment except the smell of humidity. It’s strong.
And they could fix the base of the bed. I hit the bricks infer it a couple of times.
- luke (1/5): Horrible stay, cannot recommend - Good location being the only good thing about this property Bed was broken, not possible to sleep in, hosts did not try to rectify the issue and no refund given.
Smelled terribly moldy.
Dusty apartment.
- Carli (5/5): It’s was a good stay for what it was. For Mardi Gras. But there were heaps of mozzies in the verandah area probably due - The proximity to Oxford street was absolutely brilliant. You really can’t get closer. That was amazing and allowed us to spend much needed time out of the apartment The smell, the lack of air flow, the fact that there was no laundering facilities ( turns out the washer was on the top floor but the dryer was broken) and the taps in the kitchen. The pipes are super super old and I kept waking my partner whenever I used the tap.
- Brianna (10/5): - Great location, lovely place. Great value for money and hosts are very nice too!
- Tingting (9/5): -
- Archana (7/5): Easy to commute.. - Location is too good It needs renovation
Specifically bathroom is too old
- Christine (3/5): Very disappointing. Would not book this apartment again. - The location was good enough . Easy walking distance to everything First thing you see as you approach the building it looked derelict with broken windows on top floors. Then when you open small entrance door (difficult to get in with suitcase!), and proceed down dark, dingy stairs to the basement to get into apartment, the terrible smell hits you. It made us feel sick. The neighbour apologised and gave us a can of spray but it didn’t help. Smell remained throughout our 5 day stay. I see now from previous reviews that this had been reported and not dealt with.
- Jason (10/5): Very much enjoyed the vibe of this place staying in central Sydney. - Great communication regarding lock box check in. Nice touch walking in with music playing and some festive decor. Complimentary snacks appreciated after a long delayed flight 😊 Nothing I didn't like.
- Nicola (9/5): -
- Jodyann (8/5): Good price for the location and space. - Great location for where i needed to be in Sydney.. Hosts were easy to communicate with. Nice touches with a bottle of bubbly and some snacks.
A good budget option for staying in the heart of Sydney. I read the reviews in advance of booking it and was prepared for it to be a little musty. The staircase was definitely so. The apartment aired out fine with the purifier on. Sydney just is humid and musty. If you're after 5 stars then it's not for you but I really liked it and had a good stay.
- Kim (10/5): - The bed was very comfortable, and a great location, will book again next year. Nothing
- Saurabh (8/5): -
- Adkin (8/5): Great stay, would recommend, highly basement flat so there are stairs. Bathroom outdated but other than that very comfor - Close to transport and shops Small entrance door to premises
- Agnes (7/5): - Location absolutely good, you can walk to the sights. It is spacious, had everything we needed. We got some complimentary snacks, that was nice. Water gets hot enough. Communication was very good. It was clean despite of the old house. It is very old and in the basement, smells like the walls are mouldy. But location is so good, it s ok for some days. Would be nice to have a removable Showerhead.
- Federico (8/5): - Excellent location, friendly staff. The humidity in the place was too much, plus the smell made the apartment a bit tough to stay in.
- Matthew (7/5): -
- Michael Brian (8/5): -
- Jessica (10/5): Great location, wonderful decor, helpful hosts - Great location, cute apartment with a decent amount of space and everything you need for a stay away from home. The hosts provided all the info to get into the apartment in a timely manner and very clear instructions. Would stay there again. Nothing I didn't like. The entry and stairs are narrow, so it would be tricky to access if someone had accessibility issues. But I was very happy with the stay and nothing I didn't like.
- claude (6/5): - Très bon emplacement dans Sydney
Réaction rapide des propriétaires suite à quelques soucis Description du lieu ne correspondant pas tout à fait à celle sur Booking.
Prix ( en janvier 2025) élevé pour le bien
- Shannon (7/5): Perfect price for a well-resourced lovely New York-style apartment. - It was very charming and had all of the appliances and utilities you need. Great location. Very friendly hosts who were easy to contact. Provided some snacks and drink free of charge. Lots of games provided too. It had a slightly musty smell but there was a humidifier and lots of air fresheners about. I think it’s because there’s not much air flow as it’s underground. You got used to it pretty quick though and it’s not the hosts fault.
The window to the bathroom which is accessed via the kitchen was mostly see-through and could do with a small curtain or material placed over it for more privacy. You couldn’t use the toilet which is next to the window while someone was in the kitchen.
- Matthew (9/5): Superb -
- Rian (3/5): Great location - Sad advertising for unit. - Given code to the lockbox which was all good. One set of keys for "upto 4 people" with no intercom at the front door, presented the first problem that either we all went out together or someone had to have the key, so we compromised and kept the key in the lockbox, so that we could access it, but this didn't help when one of us where in the appartment with the keys, they'd then have to come up to open the front door to let the others in. The advertising for the unit, was very misleading.
Firstly - Should've stated that this unit is below road level, meaning that it is downstairs with no actual ventilation or view to the outside world. Don't advertised a Courtyard. A 1.5m by 5m spot is not a courtyard, it's a drain for the water from above.
To sleep more than one person, you actually have to fold up the sofabed, in the lounge to make room to be able to walk around the unit. It seem to contain a lot of dust, you'd wipe the bench and 20 minutes later it'd be dusty again. And the over excessive use of "Damp Aid and odour neturalisers" was beyond a joke, we thought the overpowering lemon smell when we first entered would leave quickly, but alas it was present the entire stay. The fans didn't do anything to cut down the smell.
The roof top terrace, would've been lovely, if it didn't have every other appartments, washing hanging all over it, when we arrived, we ventured up the stairs, found the laundry at the roof, then navigated the "pallet" to access the rooftop, to be greeted with clothing racks all over the place (Photo added taken after the weekend when someone decided to remove their laundry from the terrace, but still had washing in the laundry)
I get that it is an old building and prone to mould and moiuster, but come one now..
- Claire (8/5): Great location, lovely apartment - The property was in a great location, near the metro and bus stops. The apartment was really nice, and there were amazing views from the rooftop. Great facilities. Only negative, it was very hard to contact the owners re queries and the whole building looks like it really needs some work doing to it, very rough looking, but we must say, the apartment was really lovely inside. There was also a lovely welcome pack when we arrived which was a lovely touch.
- Michael (5/5): Great location but overpriced - Great location for Oxford Street and handy for public transport. Nicely decorated with some period features. Good layout. Good view from roof terrace. We were able to drop off our luggage early. Shabby chic (emphasis on the shabby), wee bit dingy basement flat with a lingering musty smell. Inhospitable hallway, basement staircase smells really badly. Kitchen inadequate. Bathroom barely fit for purpose. Roof terrace is communal, 5 floors up. Would've been ok if it had been priced accordingly but was by far our most expensive rental of the holiday. Overpriced - wouldn't recommend.
- Angelo (7/5): Good -
- Jenny (4/5): Unfortunately mould issues. Helpful and accommodating host that refunded our stay. - Easy access to CBD, shops and communications. Easy to communicate with host and they were very helpful when we had issues with the accommodation. Apartment is in the basement of the building. Building as such was very run down and there were clear issues/smell of mould. There was an error in the description of the apartment as there is no washing maschine in the acctual building (but a pay per use maching on the 3rd floor of the building). Terrace is not acctually a terrace but more a little enclosed space accessed from the bedroom. Run down roof top terrace, although with great views of the city. Sofabed extremly squeaky when moving even a little.
This is an aparatment for a few nights in the city if your not going to spend much time in the appartment. Not for longterm stay. Not for family.
- Helen (8/5): My hosts Rob and Flavia were great to deal with and the apartment was in a great location and was perfect for my require - Great location and very cute apartment which was surprisingly spacious. Rob and Flavia were very happy to help with all my queries. They left a range of complimentary food and beverage which was much appreciated!
- Roslyn (7/5): Good - I liked upon arrival a nice complimentary package. Rooftop Terrace had lovely view. Needed some essentials like tea and coffee with sugar. Towels need updating. Other than that was nice.
- Danielle (10/5): Exceptional -
