- Stephen (9/5): -
- Anne (10/5): Nothing short of exceptional. Possibly the best hosted accommodation we have ever stayed in. - Exceptionally detailed cottage. ‘Five star’ attention in the centre of Penola’s history. Phenomenal hosts. Humbling experience. Absolutely nothing…
- Katherine (10/5): - Mr Wilsons is a gorgeous cottage in the heart of Penola, very comfortable, great breakfasr provisions.Toileteries provided of good quality. Nothig it was perfect.
- Gino (10/5): -

- Claire (10/5): Staying at Mr Wilson’s felt like a big warm loving hug. - Mr Wilson’s cottage felt incredibly lovely and warm with thoughtful attention to making the stay very comfortable.
The furnishings chosen gave so much warmth and comfort, styling captured the historic past but felt fresh and new, flowers to greet us in the cosy kitchen with the overwhelming choice for what to have for breakfast. An absolutely delightful cottage, we thoroughly loved our stay.
- David (10/5): -
- Christine (9/5): Great location in centre of town close to everything - Fabulous location and lovely to have breakfast provisions None of the windows opened so very stuffy at night. Had to leave doors open which is not safe. Also needed somewhere to hang clothes
- Kane (9/5): -
- Suzanne (10/5): Great location and very welcoming when we entered. - Cleanliness, comfortable bed, plenty of breakfast provisions. The couch was uncomfortable
- Joanne (9/5): Lovely cottage in Penola - Lovely cottage in a great location. Great breakfast supplies. A relaxing stay. Our only criticism was the couch was too uncomfortable to sit on. (as mentioned by others)
- Rosalie (8/5): Quiet location, excellent accommodation if you want something different - Breakfast provisions were very good. Location was quiet and within walking distance of shops and eating houses. Accommodation was very clean and bathroon was great.
- Greg (10/5): -
- Gaye (9/5): - The historic nature of the building. The breakfast treats, wine etc were a lovely touch. Great location. My husband's head could not get used to the low internal doors, no matter how many times I told him to duck!!
- Peter (8/5): Historic cottage. - A wonderful recently renovated original cottage. Learning about the history of the house, added to the experience. Well set up, with great breakfast provisions. Modern bathroom. Great location. For us, the lack of comfortable chairs was a problem.
- Melina (10/5): -
- Christine (8/5): A cosy cottage with some excellent mod cons. - Bathroom, kitchen facilities and location were excellent. Bed was comfortable and wifi was reliable. low doorways were a problem for 183cm person, took some time to adjust and caused a few (literal) headaches to begin with. He did adapt though, and it is an old cottage. Would have appreciated a wardrobe or hanging space for coats.
- Dean (10/5): Wow, the property, location, breakfast was all amazing. -
- Sandra (9/5): - Beautiful old cottage, well set up. and excellent location.
- Lyn (9/5): -
- James (9/5): - Great location , beautifully restored and presented N/a
- Freisler (9/5): Gorgeous little cottage with lots of history & so close to everything. - History, walking distance to the Main Street. The property was perfect & the breakfast provision were excellent. We did however find that the seating in the lounge was very uncomfortable.
- jacinda (10/5): - Great little extra touches and a cute historical place to stay
- Caitlin (10/5): -
- Lia (10/5): Perfect, unique and charming cottage. - Unique, charming, well resourced and clean. Nothing!
- Leonie (9/5): -
- Jeanette (9/5): A Historic House with an Interesting Story in a Great Location !! - This property was beautifully restored with quality inclusions . The kitchen was well equipped, the bed was super comfortable and the bathroom was roomy offering an array of luxurious products. The accommodation was a short walk to many of Penola’s attractions, cafes, pubs and restaurants There was very little we didn’t like. As we chose to stay in Penola in winter, we expected some challenges with the temperature. While the house itself was wonderfully heated, the bathroom was not. Two small blow heaters were available to help warm the room a little which was ample. Our main problem was drying towels . We would have appreciated a small airer that we could have placed in the house to dry our towels. Instead, we hung our towels on the back of the kitchen chairs and placed a blow heater near them so we could reuse towels rather than always using a fresh dry one .
Another suggestion would be to include a can opener in what was a well equipped kitchen
- Lyn (8/5): Very good -
- Michael (9/5): Great value and central to great cellar doors and cafes in a historical site - Location with great bathroom and generous provisions Lounge chairs need updating, not really suitable for tall people or elderly as doorways are low as building was built in 1800’s, maybe this feature should be mentioned on advertising
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mills (9/5): lovely, comfortable cottage in a good location -- I would recommend - this is a lovely cottage, with a great bathroom, comfy beds and excellent breakfast. -- it was comfortable and within walking distance of many attractions the kitchen was small but well equipped, but the limited space sometimes made it hard to navigate
- Denise (9/5): Very quaint cottage in a great location.comfortable bed and good bathroom. Minimal kitchen facility for self catering - Quaint. Good bathroom. Location Kitchenette was a challenge
- Nicola (10/5): The property was so cosy that we had to persuade ourselves to go out for dinner.. loved it! - The quaint pioneer style with a modern day twist, it was simply outstanding. Luxury accommodation that offered everything you need for a short break.
- Christopher (9/5): Superb - The accommodation, amenities and thoughtfulness of the welcome back was good and attention to detail With the property being a national trust house, people thought they could come inside not realising it was occupied a sign needs to be placed on the property to say so. This was annoying at times with people looking through the window and trying to get in.
- Samantha (10/5): Feels like you're stepping into a storybook - Mr Wilson's is charming, historic & full of character! - Exceptional location - Petticoat Lane is a beautifully maintained, historic lane and so close to the heart of Penola. Mr Wilson's cottage is full of character - a charming place to stay!
- Kate (10/5): Just beautiful - Absolutely beautifully renovated 1860s cottage. The finishing touches make it so magical. Right in the heart of Penola. I would not hesitate in staying here again.
- Christine (7/5): Weekend away - Cottage had everything we needed and so close to town We had quite alot of people walking into the cottage and looking through the windows.
A sign outside for when the cottage is occupied would have been a good idea
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Phoebe (10/5): Gorgeous heritage in the heart of Penola - Ideally located, great attention to detail- the addition of the bathroom is so well thought out and executed The doorframes are a little low- it’s clearly true to the origins of the house but tall folks will need to duck
- Beverley (9/5): Superb -
- Judith (10/5): Moving and Memorable - This property is so incredibly charming and well preserved. We thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the community history and the personal story of Mr. Wilson and his contribution to the region. The hosts have thoughtfully curated the furnishings and details throughout the property, including a bottle of local wine, breakfast provisions, high end toiletries and cleaning products and extensive local information.
- Alexander (10/5): To my mate and I, this place was a total winner. Enjoyed the stay and the complimentary supplies were abundant and awes - This place was awesome!! Stacks of food. Actually forgot to take some of the beautiful fruit and bread on out departure. More coffee and cereal than you could possibly eat. Gluten free muesli!!! Beds soooo comfortable. I bought my own pillow for the road trip - but didn’t need it here. The new bathroom disguised as a water tank really does the place justice. Great historical location. No hesitation to return to this property or to recommend it. Hmmmm. Maybe a couple more power sockets? Door arches are low (haha). I know, this is the historical character of the home.
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jenny (9/5): Superb - Lovely historic cottage. Comfy bed. Generous provisions. Close to town. A fun place to stay. Nothing we didn't like
- Tania (9/5): Superb -
- Sonya (9/5): Superb - The cottage was very quaint and well appointed. It was extremely hot on the day of our arrival and the cottage was quite cool inside without air-con. It is in a street full of similar era cottages and within walking distance of cafes, Pubs and shops all of which are fabulous. Perfect base for exploring the history of the town and the famous Coonawarra wine region Penola's water is quite unpalatable(our personal taste) and would recommend bringing bottled water for drinking.
- Andrew (9/5): Wonderful space to be able to stay in - Beautiful little cottage so well set up for guests with everything thought of , obviously a lot of pride is taken with this accommodation. Fabulous options for breakfast & lovely touches with biscuits, chocs & wine .
Bathroom is great Bathroom could get very hot
- Roger (10/5): A gem of a restored historical cottage in a award winning rural town - Perfect location in Penola historical precinct close to all town facilities including the excellent Pipers Restaurant. The cottage is beautifully restored with a great bathroom. All you need and then some with generous special treats for guests. Nothing
- Nicholas (10/5): A Beautiful Place - We have loved Penola and Petticoat Lane for years, so it was a dream to stay at Mr Wilson’s Cottage. The cottage is delightful and though 1850’s, has lots of modern and personal features. Breakfast provisions and other little
Goodies were generous. It’s a charming little place brimming with history of the first settlers to the area. It’s well worth reading about the history and immersing yourself in it to get a full appreciation of how amazing the European settlers were. We will definitely return.
- Campbell-reid (10/5): Out of this world! - Mr Wilson’s cottage is an excellent place to stay. The breakfast is fabulous and the cottage and its history is fascinating. Jes and Meghan have done an incredible job to create this perfect little air bnb. Tourists looking in through the windows. It freaked me out the first time, after that I just opened up the doors and told them all I’d learned about Mr & Mrs Wilson
- Brown (9/5): Great stay at Mr. Wilson's - Beautiful renovated historic property in a great location.
Very well stocked with good produce and provisions. Personally the lounge seats were too low, but that's because of my joints.
- Vanessa (10/5): Romantic and a home away from home with everything you need - Clear communication on how to access the keys
- Glenn (10/5): Relaxing, family catch up, nearby wineries, we’ll set up and catered for - Great use of an awesome piece of history It’s too far away to go back every couple of months🤣
- Marilena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ann (10/5): Exceptional - Supplies provided were lovely.
The place is carefully curated and attention to detail and tonhistory is first clasd N/a
- Nicole (10/5): Great location, comfortable, historic accommodation. - We had a great break at Mr Wilson's. The bed was amazingly comfortable and we had everything that we needed to relax and enjoy the Coonawarra. A great blend of history and modern comfort. Being tall people, the low doorways were interesting. This was not really a negative as it is typical of a building of this age - actually a good reminder of how life has changed over the years.
- Mary (9/5): A delightful and comfortable historic cottage in the middle of the Petticoat Lane historic area - The location is lovely, tucked in amongst other historic cottages and gardens with a charming community accessible herb and vegetable garden nearby. The 2 bedroom (queen beds) cottage accommodates 4 and is bright and airy inside.
The beds were very comfortable with nice linen sheets. Breakfast provisions were generous with a range of cereals, eggs, juice, lovely sourdough and spreads and good quality teabags and pod coffee. The attached modern bathroom shaped like a water tank has a good roomy shower, plentiful hot water and excellent water pressure. Thick towels and cosy robes. Reverse cycle aircon and multi channel TV. Loved the photo of the back paddock llama. A really delightful historic cottage, beautifully presented, in a charming location. Roses in full bloom around the lane when we visited. Highly recommend this cottage. We intend to return. The outdoor bins and gas bottles are tucked behind a screen to hide them from view (good) but it does make it a bit tight to get to the clothesline and around to one of the outdoor seating areas (it can be easily accessed from the front door though)
The kitchen has its limitations due to the nature of the cottage, eg no stove. This isn’t a criticism because we did not expect to be cooking (apart from toast and eggs and we managed that just fine). Why cook when there are restaurants, pubs, cafes and wineries to explore? A thoughtful range of appliances are provided but enjoy being in a piece of history and get take away or eat out.
If you are a tall person don’t forget to duck as the lintels are lower than modern ones. We think it added to the charm.
- Antony (10/5): A special place to stay, lots of character and many thoughtful touches. Highly - Full of character, excellent facilities and great location
- Gabrielle (10/5): Beautiful cottage stay. - Beautiful, well styled cottage with all the amenities you need. It’s well located close to town and has a very cosy feel to it.
- Julie (10/5): Mr Wilson’s was warm, welcoming & wonderful! - The stories of the history of the cottage combined with the modern upgrades made it a wonderful
Place to stay. Close to everything in the town. Not many power points but that is a reflection of its age and history. Easily unplugged one appliance for another.
- Sue (10/5): Exceptional - So many quality inclusions and the property had so much character!
- Greg (10/5): Loved it and will be back soon. - Breakfast provisions were fantastic. Three of us all had different breakfasts with the provisions on hand. Nothing...absolutely perfect
- Rebekah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Woon (9/5): Superb - It's such a special little cottage with lots of history. Although it's more than 100 years old, they made the interior comfortably modern and very easy to kick back and relax. The provisions for breakfast were plenty and everything was of good quality. From booking to check-in, to response time from Jes &Megan was a breeze. The surroundings were beautiful and easy walk to the shops and restaurant. Highly recommended! Nothing
- Ruth (10/5): Exceptional - Generous breakfast, an ambience that created calm and peace, location amidst green gardens and quiet historic precinct, friendly correspondence with hosts as needed. Absolutely perfect for us.
- Christine (10/5): Very comfortable historic cottage - Great touches of welcome and luxury from the hosts. The cottage is furnished with a mix of vintage and modern and was very comfortable. It is within walking distance of all restaurants, cafes , attractions and shops. Highly recommend a stay here and would be very comfortable for two couples. The hosts provided fresh eggs, fruit, milk, bread and a big range of cereal, spreads, teas and a coffee maker.
- Karen (10/5): Absolutely adorable cottage oozing charm! - What a beautiful property full of history and charm in a perfect location. The breakfast inclusions were a lovely touch. Would highly recommend this as the best spot to stay in town. The heating probably needs to be improved for the really cold months. There is air conditioning but it isn't enough to heat the space.
- Shayne (6/5): Pleasant -
- Richard (9/5): Superb - Liked the big modern bathroom, excellent breakfast selection and large very comfortable bed. The heritage cottage had a lot of character and the bathroom extension was well done. Leather lounge not very comfortable, but liked the retro armchairs.
- Kerry (10/5): Beautiful historic cottage - Mr Wilson's is a beautifully restored and decorated cottage in a great location. It is respectful of the history of the cottage but still has all the creature comforts to make for a comfortable stay.
- Jess (10/5): Exceptional - This was a gorgeous little cottage to stay in, and I'm sorry that our stay was so short! This isn't a bad thing, as I'm aware of the era that the cottage was built, but the doorways are very low! This adds to the character of the building and didn't bother me at all, but my partner kept hitting his head
- Maddison (9/5): Superb -
- Robyn (10/5): Highly recommend this beautiful historic property. - The property is absolutely gorgeous, and very close to town. Jess and Megan have retained the historical charm with luxurious touches. Lovely breakfast options, well equipped kitchen, and the bed was incredibly comfortable and very warm. They also responded to our inquiries promptly. The entire town and particularly Petticoat Lane is brimming with history. Very cold Penola nights, some heating in the bathroom might be worth considering. Otherwise managed with the A/C and blankets.
- Karen (9/5): Highly recommend this accommodation. - Great location. The owners provided a wonderful array of breakfast produce and welcome gifts. Beds were comfortable with a luxurious thick doona to keep us warm. Heating was turned on for us before arriving- nice touch. Couldn’t get a tv station to watch the football.
- Adam (9/5): A privileged stay in an historic cottage. - Beautifully restored historic cottage, set up with 5 star furnishings and everything you need in a self contained unit. The kitchen and breakfast provisions just have to make you smile - it is rare to see things set up so nicely. The bedrooms are perfectly appointed and very comfortable, and the setting felt very private. The courtyard in the back was a great spot to relax after a day cycling the rail trail.
The 'water tank' bathroom addition was a real architectural surprise, and a nod to the very tasteful renovation that was done to this old building. The historic Petticoat Lane precinct was a lovely spot to stay - it felt like a real privilege to be able to stay there. We had an extreme cold snap while we visited, and the cottage heating struggled. It would have been nice if the fireplaces were operational, but understand there would be good reasons they are closed off. That said, the extra heaters helped a lot and there were plenty of cosy blankets to cuddle under! The cottage has its inherent old world limitations, but Jess and Megan have gone to great lengths to make the most of it!
- Rebekah (10/5): Absolutely perfect! - Mr Wilson’s is absolutely beautiful. Megan and Jes have thought of everything. The cottage is so lovely. Everything that is supplied is of top quality. The location is perfect. I've already booked a second stay. Absolutely nothing!
