Guest Reviews

- Jesse (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing people comfortable beds
- Calvert (7/5): Good - Free breakfast is nice My shower had mould around it o floor 4, the rooftop bar isn't a bar as there are never staff up there and the downstairs seating is far from a social space.
- Darcy (5/5): Passable -
- Designs (10/5): Exceptional - Everything!!
- Emma (6/5): Nice enough for a place to sleep, good location and great staff. Lots of mosquitos in the dorm. - It was in a perfect location to lots of things in Hanoi. The rooms were nice enough, the staff was lovely and you can check in at any time I got bitten by lots of mosquitoes while in bed, I didn't mind but for solo travellers to know it was not very social - my dorm was no one speaking. The dorm was smelly but obviously that's due to the people in the dorm not the place. It's a good place just to sleep. Also the hostel rooftop bar was never open in the evening
- Madalina (7/5): Good -
- Vivian (10/5): Best hostel ever! - All time favorite hostel from all my travels! Perfect location in the heart of Old Quarter. Incredible staff who are helpful, kind, and funny. Amazing breakfast! Booked Ha Giang Loop through the hostel—highly recommend. Ideal for all travelers, but especially great for solo female travelers. I’ll be back!
- Wesley (9/5): Really good hostel and stay! Good breakfast as well which you can enjoy at the rooftop! Only thing is that curtains are - Really good hostel and stay! Good breakfast as well which you can enjoy at the rooftop! Only thing is that curtains are not present. Location is excellent.

- Petr (8/5): Great value - Location, staff, rooftop, price. Maybe the courtains in the bed could be black or more thick to protect better from the light.

- Mansour (7/5): Good - Overall, I had a good stay at Downtown Hostel! If you’re into socializing and meeting fellow travelers, this is definitely the place to be. I made so many new friends during my stay. One of the best things was booking the Ha Giang Loop with Sunflower directly through them it was an absolutely amazing experience! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, always making sure everything ran smoothly. I do hope they improve a few things in the future. The rooms were extremely humid, which was quite uncomfortable. My clothes were constantly damp, my journal got damaged from the moisture, and even breathing felt a bit heavy at times. This is something that really needs to be fixed. Cleanliness also needs improvement, the toilets weren’t properly cleaned, and my bed sheets and pillow had visible hair and dust on them.
- James (8/5): Cheap and cheerful, and a great rooftop bar. - I didn’t eat breakfast, but another guest told me it was good. The location was great, right in the middle of the old quarter. I had to look around a bit to find the place, cos it’s down an alley. I didn’t like the room much. It was very cramped, and hot. There was people’s stuff everywhere. But that’s not the hostels fault.
- Luciano (8/5): Good value and excellent location - Good breakfast with fresh fruits and eggs on the terrace. Elevator to get to the last floor. The staff remained available and helpful. Location in the old quarter and close to good food and beer street. Big lockers (bring your lock). No rules regarding noise after certain hours. If you get a bed in the 6th floor, you will hear everyone going up/down the ladder to the rooftop and when they move chairs or walk there. The shared bathroom is always wet there are no tools to clean it. Many wall sockets had visible cables. Not all beds had somewhere to hang the towels. The place is in a small street and outside the street, depending on the hour, you can be offered lots of things you probably don't want.
- Archie (10/5): The best - The staff was so friendly it was an amazing day. The hospitality was so good. The beds were comfy. Thiet was absolutely amazing so friendly and a great bloke. I’d recommend coming here if you can. Nothing
- Jesper-frederic (9/5): Let's hope there's no fire - The staff were super helpful and responsive when I required assistance due to sudden onset fever/illness. They provided me with beverages and food. Very kind.
Nice rooftop. Decent breakfast. Good location. Quiet. Seems like a deathtrap in case of fire? You can't even escape thru the balcony because it's completely barred.
Rooms are a bit stuffy. I didn't like the constant droning of the ceiling fan.
- Laura (7/5): Good -
- Alice (10/5): Booked Ha Giang Loop through the hostel—great choice! Breakfast great! Personell and service amazing! - It was an amazing experience to stay at the Downtown Hostel in Hanoi. Location is great, right in the heart of the city, and everything is at a walking distance. We booked the Ha Giang Loop through the hostel and it was a superb choice, as we got to do the loop with a smaller group and have a more authentic (also cheaper!) experience compared to the bigger hostels, and we got to stay one night for free. Included breakfast is great.
If you have the chance, talk with the hostel personnel Dee and Tee—they were incredibly kind, funny and helpful throughout the stay.
- Shawlyn (8/5): Very good -
- Bridget (8/5): Very good - Good price, great location, comfy beds. A little cramped but otherwise nice.
- Zhu (10/5): Exceptional - great breakfast and helpful staff, clean bathroom only shared with room not whole hostel, very high value for money. Also not a party hostel would recommend buying bus tickets elsewhere as it will be cheaper
- Ruben (10/5): Exceptional - Location and services are great
- Jolie (7/5): Good - I found that the room smelled badly and i saw a cockroach on my bed
- Alden (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nate (8/5): Very good -
- Andre (8/5): Very good - Breakfast was great, the atmosphere was great (maybe I got lucky with the vibe of the other guests who stayed there).
Staff let me hook my phone up to the AUX cord and play my own music.
- Isabella (10/5): Exceptional - Good breakie and great location. The 24/7 reception helped a lot with the crazy buses that I was catching around Vietnam (always late). I'd stay again Can be a little bit messy in the room cause it's pretty small and we're all caring a lot of big backpacks.
- Noa (9/5): Superb -
- Felipe (10/5): Exceptional -
- Théo (7/5): Good -
- Ruth (7/5): Good - Very precarious stairs up to the rooftop for breakfast
- Talilah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elsie (10/5): Exceptional - The staff is very friendly, bed are comfortable and the location amazing.
- Matthew (7/5): Good - The receptionist was very helpful Rooms were quite small
- Elefant (10/5): Exceptional -
- Takashi (10/5): If you go for nightlife... - Friendly staffs and compact but cozy facilities. What I recommend here is the breakfast. It was in the continental style but the fruits are so fresh. The location is just next to the club street, so you can use here to have a good nightlife I didn't find anything wrong but the stairs up to the breakfast venue (their rooftop) was so steep that I felt a bit sceary
- Oliver (10/5): Exceptional -
- Danielle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tiago (8/5): Very good - Breakfast is quite great. Especially for the price practiced around. The laundry service is very expensive, 40k per kg. Could have done it 100m from the hostel for 25k per kg, but I wanted the convenience of having clean clothes in the morning, but in the end I overspent and it was ready 2 hours after the agreed schedule
- Bruce (9/5): Superb -

- Austen (10/5): I'm glad I stayed here, I'll come again when I'm in Hanoi. - The location is very central, right in the middle of the backpackers' area. You can walk to most places without needing a taxi.
I stayed in a mixed dorm room. The bed was comfy and had it's own light. The dorm has a sliding door to the outside to let in fresh air. I had a large locker, on which you can use your own padlock, although I felt very safe here, I hardly needed it.
A hot shower is available 24h/day. There is a lift all the way to the top dorm on floor 6, then steps up to the rooftop.
I felt very foolish when I lost my locker padlock key, but the staff were so friendly and relaxed and cut off my padlock for me . I soon bought a new padlock in town at minimal cost.
The rooftop is open to guests and has fascinating views across the roofs of the city. I often go up there to write my diary. In the mornings they serve breakfast on the roof - omelette, toast, fruit, veg and tea/coffee. I love starting the day that way, nursing my coffee, gazing across the rooftops. In the evenings your can buy alcohol on the roof.
- Leander (9/5): Superb - When I was suddenly sick by food poisoning the personnel was extremly eager to help, overall very nice and brought me everything I needed.
Breakfast on the rooftop is definitely something.
- Juliette (7/5): Good - Decent breakfast included in the price. The location is good but we could here the noise coming from the pubs. Nice staff. The rooms didn’t have natural light and the noise from the pubs. They put us in different rooms. Also not enough space in the dorm for our bags
- Bangar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lucien (10/5): Exceptional - The bedroom is super cosy, and breakfast amazing
- K (8/5): Very good - Everything is approachable There is only 1 restroom for the 8 people, so we have to prepare for the timings of restroom availablity
- Magdygaber (8/5): Very good - Top roof so beautiful I like it
- Jivan (8/5): Very good -
- Dar (7/5): Small but nice - The staff are lovely, good location and clean Very very small dorm rooms
- Naman (10/5): Exceptional -
- Archie (3/5): Don't book a private room - Decent location. We booked a private room and instead of staying in the hostel we were put in the staff's homestay 2 doors down which was a dusty room with rock hard mattresses. The bathroom hadn't been cleaned and there was no way to turn the dusty fan off. There weren't any windows either.
- Noemie (9/5): Good staff and good location - The staff was really helpful, you can have breakfast every morning, the location is perfect Maybe the fact that the breakfast is the same every morning
- Naumann (8/5): Great value for money and location - Great location right in the middle of beer street There was t enough space for our bags in the dorm
- Nicholas (10/5): Exceptional - Great location and the staff were so nice and helpful with local information and booking everything I needed too. Super nice and friendly :)) Free breakfast too! 🍳
- Kateřina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thérèse (10/5): Exceptional - The rooftop is really nice and the staff so helpful :)
- Sundeep (1/5): Disappointing and Discriminatory Experience - My experience at Downtown Hostel was terrible. I had informed them well in advance about my late arrival and shared my flight details, and they confirmed everything was fine. However, when I arrived, a man and a woman at reception spoke in a regional language, telling me I had to cancel my reservation because they were fully booked. This was very confusing, as I had already confirmed my reservation with them.
While the man was somewhat understanding, the woman was extremely rude and unwelcoming. To make matters worse, I felt discriminated against. They asked for my passport, took a photograph, and then denied me a bed. Moments later, a white traveler arrived, and they immediately welcomed him, finding him a room on the spot. When I asked to speak to a manager, they insisted that this was the final decision, claiming I had to cancel my booking as they were "full."
This was my first interaction with locals in Vietnam, and it left a very negative impression. I chose this hostel based on its positive reviews, but my experience was quite the opposite. Imagine arriving in a new country and facing such treatment on your first day. A business representing Vietnamese hospitality should treat all customers equally and with respect.
I felt very disappointed and honestly frustrated with this unprofessional treatment. I’ve traveled to more than 15 countries, and this is the first time I’ve experienced something like this. I would not recommend this hostel to anyone—travelers deserve respectful and fair treatment, and unfortunately, that was not my experience here.
- Diwen (10/5): Very happy - I really love this place, I stay near the beer street which is pretty crowded at the weekend but it will be fine if you stay in the room
The staff is always ready to help you out with information and recommendations, they are local Vietnamese.
Breakfast is served at the rooftop Sometimes crowded at the weekend
- Diwen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mylinh (10/5): Great location, friendly staff, chilled vibe - Very convenient location, right near to beer street. Lots of food and entertainment options nearby with shopping a few minutes walk away. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The hostel has a nice chilled vibe with a rooftop. Although near to the busy area, you cannot hear any noise from outside so a plus! Nothing
- Freddie (3/5): Poor - I arrived at 3AM (ish) and was told that they had been overbooked and therefore the bed I booked was not available for me and was advised to visit the “sister hostel” no more than a two minute walk away, the reluctancy to guide me to the sister hostel as if it was a normal and the unsurprised reaction of the “sister hostel” suggested that this is a normality. I received a message from the manager the following morning profusely apologising - whilst i’m sure the hostel itself was amazing if you’re arriving during the night shift period I would advise you message and confirm your bed is available prior to arriving
- Megan (7/5): Good - The beds were very comfy and had privacy curtains, a light, and plug socket which was great!
The AC worked well and the curtains in the room blocked the morning light well. The room was too small for 8 people, with no under bed storage for big bags so there was luggage everywhere.
The bathroom was unclean and the toilet paper also ran out both days.
- Anushka (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kateřina (8/5): Very good -
- Camila (9/5): Superb - The staff was very nice and friendly. Good well balanced breakfast. Always the same breakfast every day. It was good but maybe it could change after two days. The ac was really strong.
- Ben (7/5): Good - Beds are the metal framed ones, so expect some noise and movement. Rooms are a bit small but otherwise perfectly fine in a great location for cheap.
- Luc (7/5): Good - Nice staff
Excellent value for money
Excellent rooftop bar
- Katarzyna (4/5): Disappointing - Located in the center of Old Quarter, decent breakfast. Very difficult to find because it’s in the tiny alley. They should put some sign on the main street or at least provide the guest with some directions in the message before check in. I messaged them when I couldn’t find the hostel and they texted me back three days later. If I hadn’t met a nice local man who accidentally knew where it is, I don’t think I would find it.
Also my room (8 beds) was very very tiny and there was no window. I mean, it looked like there is a window, but for some weird reason there was literally no light during the day. At 10 am it was as dark as 10 pm.
Also not very social. There is a rooftop place and a small table with a few chairs next to the reception, but in general it doesn’t have this welcoming vibe.
It wasn’t terrible, but I think from my backpacking experience, that was one of the least pleasant stays
- Thomas (5/5): Functional but would only recommend to those on a tight budget! - Good location, cheap, staff were very helpful with booking buses + Ha Giang Loop. Breakfast included Rooms and beds didn’t feel very clean. Limited communal/social space. Roof “bar” was unstaffed other than breakfast. Fairly grim bathroom, but some of that can be attributed to other guests not cleaning up after themselves
- Anton (7/5): Good - Everything is fine, breakfast, shower, clean, beds, a little noisy because the toilet and shower are behind a thin door. One unpleasant moment happened when I was checking out. The guy at the counter said that I did not pay for one night when I extended and did not want to return the deposit, I had to show proof, and where would I get it from. Then he returned the deposit, but did not apologize, as if I was to blame for something. Therefore, I rate it lower.
- Lauren (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yazmyrat (10/5): Exceptional -
- Suri (5/5): Passable - The rooms were clean, staff was good had all the basic eminities It is too congested, to go to the roof top you literally have to pass through a very narrow staircase, even the rooms are quite small, I was in a room for 8 but actually it should have been just for 4 according to the size.
- Lidia (6/5): Pleasant - Clean bed. The room was small. No lights beside the bed. No space for backpacks.
The staff was asleep at midnight when we arrived.
They asked for 100k vdn deposit for the keys, we paid 3% because we paid by card and then they refunded in cash.
- India (7/5): Good -
- Dina (7/5): Good - Great location, Chill vibe and good breakfast Air conditioning and fan needs cleaning
- Silence (4/5): very bad! tourist need to beware ! - I can not go up to 2 floor of bed in room, hostel did not help me! I must to got out! hostel did not help gest, is cardiac patient could not go up to 2 floor of bed in room!
- Gagaev (10/5): Exceptional - The staff is very friendly and helpful. The location is quite good
- Mukherjee (8/5): Very good -
- Alam (10/5): Exceptional - Nice
