Guest Reviews
- Julie (9/5): Very peaceful. - The property in nature is extremely beautiful with its lake, swimming pool, birds and horses. We felt at peace in this environnement. And the cabins are amazing : a lot of space, clean, comfortable beds and a terrasse. The staff was very very nice and helpful. Thank you! We extended our stay cause we didn't want to leave!
- Dominique (6/5): Pleasant - Alone as single guests in the property. Wifi only in the restaurant / bat. No mobile network. Not well maintain. Recrption not very friendly.
- Laurent (7/5): Good -
- Michelle (10/5): A gorgeous escape - Beautiful place fell in love with it
- Eliana (10/5): Exceptional - This hidden gem in nature was amazing.
We loved absolutely everything.
Kene, the recepcionist, was amazing. His kindness and love for his job were noticeable. Him and all the staff made our stay unforgettable.
The food was so tasty and great service.
The cabins are very clean and well looked after.
The location is awesome, with a lot of open space in nature, a lot of birds to see.
Not far from the accommodation (less than 10 minutes drive) were activities for canoying, ziplining, and excursions to the Leona waterfall.
A million thanks for everything 🙏 Nothing
- Samuel (9/5): Superb - Nice and quiet place. Amazing garden. Good food.
- Vincent (7/5): Great Location, But Needs Some Love - The Rincón de la Vieja Lodge is perfectly located just five minutes from the main entrance of the national park, making it an ideal base for exploring the area. The lodge has a unique charm, with a vintage aesthetic that feels like stepping into 1960s Africa. Our room was spacious and featured beautiful old wooden furniture that added character. There's also a small pool—perfect for a refreshing swim after a day of hiking. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Overall, I would describe it as a charming 3-star motel with a lovely garden and an unbeatable location. While the lodge has potential, it’s clear that the property would benefit from significant investment and modernization. Some cabins and rooms appear abandoned, which gives a slightly neglected feel. The staff often play loud Latin pop music, seemingly assuming that all guests enjoy it, while many of us are actually seeking peace and quiet in such a natural setting. Breakfast was quite basic and unremarkable. There’s also a lack of comfortable seating around the property—the wooden outdoor chairs are particularly uncomfortable, and the bar area isn’t very inviting due to the high volume of music. The lodge also seems understaffed, which affects the overall experience. Finally, the forest trail on the property is poorly maintained and looked like it hadn’t been used or cleared in some time.
- Paul (10/5): A hidden gem just down the road from the Nat'l Park entrance. - Beautiful grounds with a pond, lovely birds and iguanas, and a sweet hiking trail right from the property into the forest where we saw monkeys and a small waterfall. Could use a chair or two inside the room.
- Chenier (8/5): Very good -
- Larisa (10/5): Exceptional - A very nice resort with everything you need, conveniently located near Rincón de la Vieja National Park. We stayed in a comfortable cottage—it was spacious, with a veranda and wooden furniture on the porch. Everything was wonderful. There are hiking trails right from the property, leading to hot springs. Just five minutes away from the resort, there are additional hot springs with multiple thermal pools. Everything is very convenient. The only suggestion I would make is to have small refrigerators in the rooms. A delicious breakfast is included in the price WiFi is available only in common areas.
- Jean-charles (9/5): Superb - Excellent location and beautiful place, very nice breakfast
- Tal (9/5): Superb -
- Cheryl (10/5): We'll be back - Breakfast OK. Location stunning Restaurant terrible. Go to pueblo soda close by for dinner
- Baxter (8/5): Amazing location - Beautiful setting, quirky grounds with 'tea garden' vibe. Access to forest walk. It was quite windy but I gather that was exceptional!
- Mark (9/5): Superb -
- Lerman (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful hidden spot! Convenient location, amazing breakfast and friendly service.
- Marla (9/5): We’ll be back! - Included breakfast was excellent. Other meals also excellent, but pricey. Huge portions, though: the snacks on the snack menu were as large as full entrees. Pricey meals
- Aisha (10/5): Authentic and beautiful - The environment and the way it all looked so natural and authentic. From the cabins to the common areas, it was truly a great way to start my trip. I loved the staff they were so sweet, and kind. I really enjoyed the costa rican dishes at the restaurant. I cant truly express how beautiful and peaceful this place is. Definitely recommend! NA
- Michael (8/5): Very good - nice location Packed lunch poor
- Jana (9/5): Superb - Beautiful garden. There is not chairs and table in the cottage.
- Cohen (9/5): A serene, paradise-like retreat with comfortable cabins, beautiful views, and easy access to activities—an unforgettable - It’s a piece of paradise in the middle of the national park, It was like time traveling, birds singing ץ, calm property
Behind the cabin, there was a small stream flowing, and its sound could be heard inside the room, creating a feeling of tranquility and zen. Friendly staff and restaurant for breakfast and dinner was nice.
The cabins are big size and the linen is 100% cotton, the mattes was firm and comfortable the towels smelled great, the little swimming pool was just about right for extra add on, and the sunset was breathtaking.
We came for two night since we booked activities in the national park and kept extending our stay since we couldn’t leave, we fell in love with the energy of the place, its close to waterfalls and hot spring few minutes drive,
Tubing and horseback riding etc…
Will absolutely come back there and highly recommend it!!! The water in the shower was cold making it unpleasant to take a shower, they could have a cloth rack for more comfortable stay.
- Barbara (10/5): Definitely would come back again - Pretty much everything The biting bugs
- Cohen (9/5): Little piece of heaven!!! - The property is in a fantastic location, perfect for visiting the national park, and just an hour from the airport. The gardens and facilities are beautiful, and the zen-like atmosphere is incredibly calming. The rooms were spotless, with sheets and towels that smelled amazing—100% cotton. The pool may not be large, but it was exactly what we needed to cool off in the crazy heat. The sunset was breathtaking. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the value for the money is excellent. Breakfast and dinner were good, though not exceptional. A truly wonderful experience overall One small thing to note is that the shower water wasn’t hot, and low stream, and it would have been convenient to have a shelf or rack for clothes. It would also have been helpful to have a place in the shower for toiletries like shampoo, soap, or toothpaste and toothbrush.
- Jasmina (9/5): Superb -
- Rebecca (9/5): Natural beauty and relaxation in a comfortable setting - The location was spectacular. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. The pool was spotless and a great place to cool off. The patio bar was a great place to relax. The meals were nothing special…staff was exceptional.
Hiking was a bit confusing, but the birds, flora and fauna were exceptional.
- Wilder (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (8/5): Very good - Located just outside the Pailas entrance to Rincon was very convenient. Check-in was quick and easy. The room was very nice with a view over the lovely grounds. The food was good. From the property was an easy 2+ mile walk to a lovely hot springs. Directions to it were very unclear when we got near it. Typical to most hotels hooks in the room we're lacking, but we did have adequate outlets. Wifi was very weak in the room. Lighting was very dim in the room.
- Brielle (8/5): Totally worthwhile spot to be close to Rincon de la Vieja - Breakfast was awesome! Also the scenery was tremendous- birds and horses all over. It was gorgeous! Beautiful hike down to a waterfall and hot springs too! Just know that it’s a bit rustic. A literal cabin! No AC but you don’t need it as it’s cool at night in the mountains
- Carmen (8/5): Nice place with lots of green areas to chill, convenient location to visit Rincon de la vieja - Location was convenient
- David (8/5): Pleasant and very handy to the park. - Cute rustic cabins, adequate and clean, well maintained gardens.
- Chiara (8/5): Very good -
- Shaylee (8/5): Very good - Beautiful grounds. Nice hike to a waterfall and free natural hot springs from the property (10km round trip, mostly shaded and saw monkeys!). Restaurant was reasonably priced with good food and big portions. Very convenient for hiking at rincon de la vieja. No wifi in rooms. Rooms are rustic. Some bugs in room but no mosquitos and nothing too bothersome. As described.
- Hazar (10/5): perfect ı will miss this place - very delicious food, beautiful nature and garden, lovely staff
- Nguyen (10/5): Exceptional - Loved the beautiful scenery and hiking trails around Everything was great!!
- Karen (9/5): Superb - Location and trails The white wine
- Maxim (8/5): Very good -
- & (8/5): Very good -
- Irina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Larisa (10/5): Exceptional - This hotel exceeded our expectations. It was amazing!
I believe we got an upgrade on the room. This was very nice! Our bungalow was amazing, very spacious and clean.
The breakfast was excellent, continental and hot, everything was included. Beautiful garden, pool, huge property . And it’s very close to Rio Negro hot springs and waterfalls. Btw, you can go there straight from hotel and check in right on the entrance!
We will come back and go to the national park next time!
- Murray (9/5): Adrian looked after us amazingly! - Breakfast was to order, and coffee was delicious.
Grounds are beautiful. National Park close by. Would have liked to have gluten free bread available.
- Andreas (3/5): Just one step off camping. - Breakfast was good. The staff tried hard but the place needs a lot of work. Close to the park. Restaurant food was good, but limited menu No hot water. The beds were very uncomfortable. The black flies ate us up so couldn’t really relax outside. The wi fi is only available at the common areas and is an open network so you can’t book the parks because the bank won’t verify a card on an open network. When they had a big crowd they were not able to handle everyone for breakfast and ran out of coffee! Lighting at night is poor so many tripping hazards. Even a toll on the rough road to get there.
- Bill (8/5): We had a pleasant stay in the rustic surroundings of the lodge. - We only stayed a short time but we enjoyed viewing the birds and wildlife from our cabin. The breakfast was delicious. We liked the layout and rustic appearance of the lodge. The employee at reception was also very helpful to us. Some of the facilities (cabins, showers etc.) are outdated. Even though we liked the rustic appearance of the lodge, it would benefit from an upgrade to improve comfort and appearance.
- Debi (8/5): Very good - Adrian was exceptional in his customer service and knowledge of this area. We appreciated him greatly as a host/manager.
Food was good at breakfast but fair for lunch/dinner. Prices for room very inexpensive but very hot during day. Fan did not cool off during daytime. Lots of bugs in cabins. Area was beautiful and maintained w/small lakes and nice waterfall hike.
Would go back if in area and would know what to expect. Restaurant fair food and ran out of alcohols except beer and tequila.
Rooms hot during day with fan. Lots of bugs in room.
- Carly (9/5): Beautiful property, great trails, yummy food, rustic lodging - Beautiful property and the perfect spot to stay if you like to hike. You can use it as a home base or hike into the park from the trail on sight. The waterfall hike/swim is great …. And we saw and heard lots of monkeys. We ordered more típico plates (rice and seafood) and had an amazing dinner. The cabins are rustic. We loved it, but this is not the spot if you like things being fancy. Also, just a warning, the woods in the area have tons of ticks so check yourself after hiking.
- Tony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Martina (7/5): Good - very friendly staff, nice park, wonderful flowers and trees, very remote 😇
- Sandra (8/5): Very good - The staff were excellent, and thought the property was beautiful. Perfect location for folks hiking at the national park and going to Rio Negro Hot Springs.
- Evita (9/5): Beautiful and nice stay near the national park - Beautiful surroundings, private, clean and comfortable cabin. Moreover, the food at the restaurant was delicious and at good prices. The waiter at the restaurant was also very kind, professional, and friendly. The WiFi doesn’t reach the cabins
- Carmen (7/5): Gorgeous property, welcoming staff - beautiful property, exceptional staff, excellent free breakfast, excellent food for fair price at lundh/dinner restaurant no A/C. rooms not supplied or furnished well
- Wilder (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nicola (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly Staff.
Close to Natuonal Park and Hot Springs.
Good trail from Lodge.
Organised a taxi for us to and from Liberia
- Chenera (7/5): We enjoyed our stay at the facility - The staff was very helpful The rooms were not clean. Bath room needs a bit of renovation.
- Karel (9/5): Very good! - Very helpful staff, nice location, very good services, comfortable cottage, very good breakfast. Too much mosquitos, because the Windows was off out orders.
- Mark (10/5): Lovely place for our first couple of nights in Costa Rica. Very chill. Easy drive from Liberia. - The area around the property is beautiful. Flowers, trees, meadows, horses. The grounds are very well kept. The lodge itself is rustic, but very well maintained, and super clean. The staff were very helpful. It is a super location for visiting Rincon de la Vieja National Park and the Rio Negro hot springs, each under ten minutes away. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The hot water in the shower was long coming, but it didn’t really matter as it was so hot that a cold shower was the only way to go. Wi-if was great in the common areas, but weak further out. They could have more vegetarian entrees.
- Masha (6/5): Outdated hotel, but beautiful property and helpful staff - The property was beautiful with an amazing pool and landscape. The staff were absolutely great, helping us check in early as well as making us food when we accidentally missed breakfast time. The rooms themselves are very outdated and beds are not comfortable. The bathroom looked very old and in bad shape. There's also a pond right by our room and we got bitten my mosquitos and bugs at night. The restaurant was quite expensive for the food it provided, its not anything special however the prices are very steep.
- Laura (9/5): Superb - Fantastic location. We arrived by taxi from Liberia ($35) and could walk to the hot springs resort (25 minutes) and park entrance (uphill 1 hour). Nice grounds and pool..
- Margaret (7/5): Convenient short stay accommodation while visiting Rincón national park. - As noted by others, the lodge is 1-2 k from the national park. Convenient to return to lodge after day of hiking and relax in pool . Staff friendly. Facilities are worn. Basic, functional. Meals adequate. Beer cold. Needs some TLC.
Grounds are looked after with gardening staff.
- Alexander (8/5): Very good - The location Not enough wallsockets to charge the phone etc.
- Achimkuttler (8/5): Very good -
- Yann (10/5): Exceptional - Loved the staff and the lodge environment. Very pretty , felt right where we wanted to be. Will come back for sure Bed could be a bit comfier
- Michael (9/5): Perfect place for people who love nature - Huge garden with amazing nature.
Very nice rustic style huts made out of wood. Could have been cleaner
- Julian (10/5): Exceptional - Very serene and beautiful environment surrounded by nature. This is the place if you want to relax. Perfect location for exploring the national park and a day trip to the nearby adventure park. The lodge is well maintained and very spacious. There's good food options at the restaurant. Staff are nice.
- Tracie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hillary (7/5): Good - Pablo was very welcoming and helpful. the room/beds and pool were nice. no A/C. but it’s in the mountains!!:)
- Lucile (10/5): Exceptional - It is very nice and very calm
- Stephen (8/5): Very good -
- Belén (8/5): Pretty, good & affordable place to stay close to Rincon de la Vieja! - The location close to the national park, trails close to the park, the natural beauty and tranquility of the property are amazing! The breakfast was delicious and staff friendly :) The casitas are a little outdated and might need some maintenance/upgrade (the walls, hard old beds, etc.). The atmosphere at night is somewhat dull for what it could be. This property has amazing potential!
- Kaiowas08 (10/5): Exceptional - The breakfast was great! I liked it all!
- Jan (7/5): Good -
- Mélanie (9/5): Little paradise - The site is wonderfull, the host are really nice, the food was good, the pool was clean. Everything perfect! Nothing..
There was no AC, but no need because the night wasn't so hot and there was a fan.
There was some ants in the room but hey, you are in the middle of the jungle 🤷♀️
- Inna (7/5): Good - pretty unique location. unfortunately pretty dirty
- Sebastián (10/5): Exceptional -
- Inga (6/5): Pleasant -
- Reyes (8/5): Very good -
- Angie (8/5): Very good -
- Lynne (10/5): WIll return - Wonderful location and helpful staff.
- Maria (7/5): Good - Beautiful gardens, great location for the national park, private trail and hot springs, big portions, decent food, cute lodges Lodges are old and are uncomfortable in windy conditions, staff were not friendly
- Michael (6/5): Great property but need to pay attention to details. - Great location to Rincon de la Vieja. The food in restaurant was great. Property is beautiful. Toilet was disgusting. Hadn’t been cleaned on a long time.
- Cynthia (5/5): I might stay here again - Location and access to the park. Very reasonable price. Biggest issue was the web site over sold this facility by using photos not if this facility. Best to be honest that folks are going to to a budget value location . The food was good but limited options.
- Nicholas (8/5): Very good - Cabins are well-space and the gardens are charming. We particularly liked the private walks through the forest (2-4 hours round trip) which we had to ourselves. Helpful staff. Wifi does not reach the cabins but is fine within the main building.
- Tracy (6/5): Beautiful property, has some issues to address - The grounds of the hotel are lovely and the location for visiting the park was excellent. Unfortunately, I got food poisoning from the burger I ordered at the restaurant for dinner. We also didn't sleep well as the room was noisy due to strong winds.
- Mario (2/5): Very poor - No furniture on vilas... Only beds and old table. Everything very used. WiFi only in restaurant, no signal, toilet leaking.
At front of the small pool only 4 beds - for all area..
There is a private road, where is necessary to paid.aprox 2 dollar/person. Everytime...
- Michael (8/5): Rustic, quiet, inviting, charming, and almost comfortable enough to stay more than two nights. - Really special remote feel, like you're somewhere special. Very close to Rio Negro hot springs experience, and only 5 mins back to the big nearby resort with all the other activities. This place is much quieter, and seems to attract experienced travelers without kids. I loved the setting with the pond and horses. Had dinner there two nights, and the food was excellent and very affordable. There is not one comfortable chair on property. All hard wood "torture" chairs. I could have stayed and read by the pond for three days if they just put Adirondack chairs on the cabin porch. I'm sure their local hand painted furniture is more authentic, but you can't sit for more than 20 mins. I love the rustic look, but a lot of the wood decking is rotting and falling apart, to the point of almost dangerous. Careful where you walk. I stayed in a cabin, which is really cute, but missing some window panes and the wood siding allows for lots (I mean lots) of wind to blow through the cabin all night. It was VERY windy there every night, and it just howls through the cabin all night. No sleep at all. I would return and stay in a motel room instead of the cabins.
- Anne (9/5): Superb - We loved the spacious log cabin feel to our bungalow. Although the hotel room was very basic (no fridge, safe or coffee machine) it was very clean and comfortable. The setting is lovely overlooking a small lagoon and fields with horses. Very short drive to the Rincon de Vieja entrance and minutes away from Rio Negro hot springs. Wifi available in restaurant area but not in bungalow. Some written info on highlights of the area and the trail on hotel property would have been helpful. For example, you cannot pay by credit card at the Rio Negro hot springs so have to drive to the Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin.
- Paul (9/5): Superb - Nice location near the park with hiking trail on the property to natural hot springs.
- Ruth (8/5): Very good -
- Eliška (9/5): Superb -
- Paul (9/5): Superb - Great location next to Rincon de la Vieja Pailas Section. My stay was brief but the staff was great and accommodated my late arrival! Two comments for future travelers...
1) Be careful with late arrivals. I barely made it in because coming from Liberia, I needed to pass through the property of Hotel Hacienda, and I got there just as they were shutting down their gates around 6:30 or 7 PM. If I had been 10 minutes later, I would have needed to find another way to the hotel!
2) The property is located on a beautiful mountain slope, where there are often strong katabatic winds throughout the night. If you are a light sleeper, bring ear plugs!
- Golf (2/5): Reminded me of summer camp without the hot showers - Nature Needs updating. Never did get hot water in the shower despite waiting 10 minutes. The bed was like a trampeline
- Mark (10/5): Great place to explore and relax - Peaceful location. Lodges set in lovely garden. Good possibilities for hiking. Restaurant food was enjoyable. The gentleman at Reception was very helpful and patient. All very good.
- Andrea (10/5): Exceptional - The beautiful scenery, good breakfast There was no real option for drying clothes in the rooms
- Isaac (8/5): Very good -
- Henry-paul (9/5): Superb - The site is a haven in the nature, beautiful and peaceful. The hotel equipment is basic but all what you need.
The staff is nice and very accomodating. I would have liked to stay one or two more days to discover more of the nature hiking trails around.
- Jakub (8/5): Very good - Food in the restaurant was good, great breakfast. Cottages could use some work. There were holes in wooden walls.
- Bradley (9/5): Superb -
- Jules (7/5): great place to stay before the park - very nice spot and garden, with well arranged bungalows like a small village around a small lake, very enjoyable the rooms are ver simple and could be a bit more homey, but that’s still fine. the restaurant could have a bit more atmosphere, it’s a bit dark.
- Nick (8/5): Feel at one with nature. - Stayed here without a car, it bck onto the RDLV national park and you can walk literally out of the gate and into the park, to waterfalls, hot springs etc. SO whilst location wise it is quite remote (particularly if no car... can't really walk to anywhere for food etc), it was great for what we wanted. Did 2 long (8 and 11 mile) walks from the lodge. The grounds are decent, very nice chilled atmosphere and very pretty sunsets to watch from your veranda. The pool is small but very inviting and looked nice and clean. Plenty of spots to chill with a cold beer around the grounds. There is a restaurant on site that does breakfast and dinner (maybe lunch? wasn't there during the day). The restaurant is OK, food is OK, don't expect great things. Very helpful and friendly staff, but felt a bit like it's the first time they have ever run a restaurant. Ran out of rum on our first night!!!!!!!! Cabins are BASIC but have a decent warm shower, a cupboard and the bed is fine. Ours had a double and 2 singles (we are just a couple) so actually had loads of space for us. Walls are timber and thin, earplugs useful just because of the frogs/crickets/monkeys/birds making a noise. No aircon in ours, but we had a fan that made a very annoying ticking noise. Nice veranda for chilling on. BRING GOOD INSECT REPELLANT - you are basically in the jungle. As above, but basic rooms and restaurant food just OK.
- Iryna (9/5): Superb -
- Isabel (9/5): Superb -
- Lena (7/5): Special and nice place with simple rooms - Super nice areal, really lovely with a small lake and a pool. The food wasn’t good but really expensive.
