Guest Reviews
- Mark_Yeo (8/5): - Loved the cosy cabin in the isolated location, in the midst of nature, love the fresh air, the great views in the morning and the wildlife all around. Would be nice to have knobs to hang coats but I'm nitpicking now..
- Ellen (10/5): - Loved the views and solitude. Enjoyed spotting the wildlife throughout the night and the torch provided. Sunset from the cabin was incredible. Had a tasting at the distillery before checking in which was great and informative. Nil however as others have noted the road up is gravel and up a hill, this was not an issue for us.

- Joanne (10/5): Sensational! A must stay location while in Port Arthur. - Our stay was exceptional. The Devil’s Lair cabin is perched atop a mountain, with breathtaking, uninterrupted views that make it feel truly special. We lit the wood fire and the cabin quickly became warm and inviting—perfect for a cozy night in. The bed was incredibly comfortable.
The fresh croissants for breakfast were a thoughtful and delicious touch. Before heading up to the cabin, Sam guided us through a gin and whisky tasting—he really stood out with his knowledge and genuine passion for the craft. We also had the pleasure of chatting with Bill McHenry, which made the experience even more memorable.
We’ll definitely be returning!
- Valerie (10/5): - The stunning outlook, the comfortable bed, the privacy
- Rachel (9/5): -
- christian (9/5): - The view was exceptional, the bed was very comfortable. The cabin was clean and well presented.
- Maddison (10/5): Amazing - Stunning location, well equipped, comfortable. Lots of wildlife which I loved, will definitely be back!
- Stacey (10/5): - Beautiful views and house. Complimentary freshly baked croissants for breakfast were delicious. Friendly owners at the property.
- Andrew (10/5): Thanks to the owners for making this the perfect retreat. - We genuinely relaxed feeling like we were away from the busyness of life. The view from mt. Wellington (kunyani) all the way down to hartz mountains and the south coast was spectacular. The stars were so visible without any light pollution.
The bed was so comfortable that we have begun to see if we can change our mattress and pillows at home to see if we can replicate the comfort level. Nothing to dislike
- Rifat (10/5): - Beautiful views of Tasmania and Port Arthur while less than 10mins drive from the main historic site. Small touches added to the overall feel and gave a romantic touch to our honeymoon. Fireplace was beautiful and rooms were new with an abundance of towels.
- Tina (9/5): A one of the favourite stays of our 3 week trip - We loved our brief but peaceful stay at Devils Lair surrounded by wallabies in the evening. It was spacious and comfortable with everything we needed including a lovely shower, very comfy bed and great fire if it had only got cool enough. We were looking forward to our croissants for breakfast but unfortunately didn’t read the instructions for baking until the morning as they were in the fridge and then discovered they required proving overnight. Also there were some gorgeous coffee table books but some general information on sights, walks etc in the area etc would have been appreciated and perhaps some tips on how best to spot wildlife in the area.
- Carla (9/5): -
- Debra (10/5): Relaxed and chilled, peaceful and quiet with outstanding views - Lovely modern, fully equipped property with magnificent views
- Paul (10/5): Stunning cabin and location - Large, new cabins in an isolated spot on the mountain. No light pollution for stargazing and plenty of local wildlife. Cabin comprehensively equipped and spotlessly clean Large patio area for watching the sunset. Comfortable beds where you can wake with a view There's a steep, rutted track from distillery to the cabin which a regular car wouldn't appreciate. I understand this is due to be fixed soon though.
- Julie (10/5): -
- Lisa (9/5): Great views in remote area in cosy cabin. - Super remote and beautiful views. Big comfy bed. Croissants to bake in the morning and fire was ready to go.
- PAUL (10/5): Amazing location - Great property Clean good instructions - croissants in the morning
- kirsty (10/5): Should have stayed for longer. - Spectacular location, delightful staff
- laurence (10/5): - un cottage très très bien équipé, au milieu de la nature. Tranquillité assurée. rien
- Robin (10/5): -
- Vivianne (9/5): Lovely stay - A very comfortable and clean cabin with a patio on which I managed to take star trail pictures. Lots of animals around at night as I heard rustling noises, although we only saw a pademelon. Very excited to see the telescope but didnt know how to use it hahaha!
Despite being offgrid, we managed to get signs on our phones and watched Australian Open on the TV. The dirt road leading up can feel challenging for inexperienced drivers but is actually manageable. As an urban dweller I do understand why one reviewer felt unsafe because it could feel isolated. Then again it’s a trade off for dark sky and being in the same hood as wildlife.
- Norman (10/5): A lovely place, although not the cheapest, definitely value for money. - Location, views, and property contents Nothing
- Joanne (10/5): Perfect piece of paradise - Everything, it’s the most peaceful location with wonderful views, the property is spacious and clean with everything you need including the croissant oven😁 we met Bill in the distillery who was so friendly and took the time to explain about the local wildlife and astronomy us😃 we didn’t want to leave ..Thank you Bill, we hope we get to come back one day 🩷 Having to leave 😕
- Jo (10/5): Perfection. Would love to come - Perfectly private, tranquil spot to stay. Views are amazing and facilities are spot on. Croissants for breakfast were a lovely spot.
Hosts were amazing, even thinking of showing us the Tassie devil they trapped that night. This isn’t a dislike but a tip for future guests. Don’t be put off by the driveway to the house - our rental Corolla managed it fine.
- Brittany (10/5): -
- fei (9/5): -
- Bill (9/5): Stunning - Secluded comfortable amazing views. Host is friendly and knowledgeable Nothing
- Lucas (10/5): If there’s one spot in Tassie you need to stay, this place is it - Everything! Attention to comfort details inside the lodge. Beautiful scenery and privacy outside. Perfection.
Like being the only person in the world it’s so quiet and secluded Nothing
- Sarah (10/5): Stunning view, cosy and comfortable. - We loved the location and the view! The deck was perfect for soaking up the view and sun. At night we loved the cosy fire. We didn't want to leave.
- Sarah (9/5): - View, wombats, fire, quiet No wifi
- Denise (10/5): - The location was amazing. Everyone we met on the property were lovely and so helpful.
Bill & Ali we very easy to communicate with.
Would highly recommend and we hope to return in the future.
- Kirsten (10/5): A little slice of paradise. So remote and quiet with amazing wildlife. - Inc re edible location with views for miles. Surrounded by a pristine wilderness but with an amazing distillery just down the drive - what’s not to love? We saw wombats, wallabies, pademelons (including babies in pouches) and a variety of birds. The stargazing was world class. Even though the weather was rainy and grey, at around 11pm the clouds parted and we saw the most incredible sky with a faint aurora glow.
- HEW (9/5): Romantic Seclusion. - Dark sky viewing. Great scenery at top of a hill. Exclusive and secluded. Loads of wallabies hopping around at dusk. And the skylight above the bed is great for viewing the stars. Sufficient firewood on hand. Friendly and unintrusive staff who pretty much left us alone, but was ready with advice. Better if cabin has more than a fireplace for heating. It was freezing in the bedroom.
- Cameron (10/5): -
- Alan (10/5): Perfect. - Excellent hideaway for peace and quiet. The views are incredible. Could take the bed home, it was so comfy. Will recommend to everyone. Scott was an excellent host at the cellar door. Nothing
- Jourdan (10/5): Cosy and warm with some great views - Fireplace is always a hit
- sandra (10/5): Absolutely Loved My Stay - Must Book! - Everything about this accommodation is perfect. The cabin itself, the ambience, the environment, the wombat & wallabies that come to visit at night & the hosts. It’s position for exploring the Peninsula. Perfection. Nothing
- Jaylene (10/5): -
- Graham (9/5): A unique getaway - Location was amazing and the croissants for breakfast were sensational, along with the log fire.
- Andrew (10/5): fantastic location with excellent accommodation facilities -
- Nanthini (10/5): -
- Daniel (10/5): -
- Jane (10/5): Loved our stay comfy and welcoming with the bonus of local wildlife - Beautiful location amazing views
Comfortable bed loved the breakfast provisions well appointed Bill and Ali wonderful hosts thought of everything Nothing
- Tanya (10/5): Magic - The isolation and the view N/A
- Carole (10/5): Exceptional experience with very responsive hosts and staff. - Views, wildlife around us and especially the dark sky astronomy experience. Staff were friendly and responsive. Lounge was a little low for us but shorter people wouldn’t be impacted.
- Colin (8/5): -
- Anna (9/5): -
- Anna (9/5): Cannot wait to come back!! - The views are spectacular and the night sky was amazing with the meteor shower. The croissants were a delight. Just being picky - the tea towels
- Simon (10/5): - Excellent accommodation and reasonably priced
- Jakki (10/5): Lovely retreat on top of the mountain. - The Devil's Eco Lair was up the top of a mountain with a lovely view. The cabin was generously sized with comfortable bed and good sized lounge area. Wood fire kept the cabin warm and the croissants for breakfast were delish. We were mindful its solar so you cant have too many kitchen appliances on at one, coffee machine and airfryer.
- Tegan (10/5): Exceptional - Gorgeous cabin. Gorgeous location.
The local croissants with jam and cream were a lovely touch!
- Simone (10/5): The jewel in Port Arthur’s crown - To share everything about our stay at Devil’s Lair would only spoil the surprises for future guests. The property is beautiful, the views are absolutely amazing and the hosts are second-to-none. It’s an absolute must-stay in Port Arthur.
The ‘Lair’ is large, well fitted, comfortable and stocked with everything you may need for a few nights stay.
You won’t regret adding a couple of nights to the itinerary to spend more time here.
- Clinton (10/5): Excellent! - Breakfast was fresh croissants, the view was great to sit back and have a relaxing drink while taking it in. And the king bed was one of the best I have slept in.
- Jane (9/5): Superb -
- David (10/5): We will be back. Marvellous - Absolutely sensational view, even better sunset with cute pademelons everywhere at night. We will be back. Nothing.
- Hollie (9/5): Excellent Views, Very Comfortable Bed! Great location for visiting Port Arthur Historical Site - Incredible view from balcony, VERY comfortable bed, croissants were a nice treat. Saw a wild Tassie devil which was also a treat! Great location for visiting Port Arthur Historical Site No Wifi, Balcony Furniture was falling apart and not comfortable, driveway could be difficult without a 4x4 or decent car but we managed. Would still stay again though, we enjoyed our stay
- Nick (10/5): Unbelievable, stuff of dreams. - Everything. From the complimentary fresh croissants to the stunning view. The comfort of a good fireplace heating the entire cabin to the star gazing through the bedroom sky light.
Everything was terrific, we can’t wait to come back.
- Darren (10/5): Great location, and a very cosy cabin. - The remoteness and quiet of this cabin are fantastic. It is cosy with the open fire. The distillery is great too for an afternoon drink, with a very informative barman. Overall a great place to stay when visiting this area of Tasmania. There is a skylight in the bedroom with no curtain. Fine for us in winter but you might be up early in the summer.
- Phillipa (10/5): Amazing, highly recommend! - Amazing views, both during the day and stargazing at night. It was a little chilly when we stayed, so we soon drew on our inner cavemen and lit the fire (which is the sole source of heating the cabin) but there are easy to follow instructions. Plenty of hot water and lovely big and comfy bed - with a skylight above (think stargazing at night in your bed) Handy location, just 10 mins from the historic Port Arthur site and less thsn 10 mins to the local IGA & bottle shop. Would stay again!
- Nathan (9/5): Superb - Excellent location with spectacular view. Property was great, nice wood fire, kitchen was great with fresh coffee, croissants to bake in the morning. Loved the stay. The deck could use some more comfortable furniture to enjoy the beautiful view. The current stuff is old and not very stable. Communication was a little difficult.
- Jessica (10/5): A slice of heaven that you won’t want to leave - Devils Lair is a beautiful cozy cabin; the perfect place to relax by the fire or on the deck, stargaze and even catch a glimpse of the southern aurora.
The croissants in the fridge that were ready to be baked fresh each morning were such a lovely touch. It was a little slice of heaven and I could have stayed for much longer than 2 nights.
Short distance from Port Arthur historic site. Nothing.
- Stuart (9/5): Superb -
- Neale (10/5): Scenic and peaceful - Serenity Washing machine would have been nice.
- Lachlan (10/5): Loved the stay, great location, cabin was appointed wonderfully. - Fantastic location, great facilities Nothing at all
- Chris (7/5): A lovely secluded eco cabin with great views, just in need of some TLC. - Lovely, peaceful, rural location with a fantastic view (of the hills rather than the sea, as indicated in the description). Very comfortable bed. Wood burner fireplace with plenty of wood. (This was the only heating in the cabin which actually proved insufficient on our first, rather cold evening. However the hosts provided an electric heater the following day which helped a lot.) The kitchen could do with a restock of crockery etc. Some things are missing. There is a deck out front but only one (very uncomfortable) chair. Some better outdoor furniture would be welcome. These are relatively minor points but for the rate charged guests would expect these improvements.
- Wiwt (9/5): Superb -
- Callum (10/5): Exceptional - Most amazing off grid cabin on top of a mountain with huge panoramic views stretching over lakes and mountains. Beautifully fitted out to make it feel so homely as well! Nothing
- Deneille (10/5): We loved our stay. Beautiful cabin in a amazing location - Amazing cabin in a beautiful location
- Sharp (8/5): Very good -
- Minerva (10/5): Fabulous - Gorgeous location and view. Beautiful cabin. So peaceful. Easy to find The cabin had tea and coffee but I would have liked a few other things (snacks, drinks etc)
- Zach (9/5): Superb -
- Sharron (10/5): Excellent. Would highly recommend this property. - The cabin was gorgeous, well fitted out, super comfy and had exceptional views and privacy. Lots of very thoughtful touches like extra blankets and slippers. And awesome gin tastings at the distillery to boot We just loved it.
- Michelle (10/5): Lovely, peaceful - Isolated and quiet
- Katie (10/5): Amazing stay in an amazing location! - Brilliant property in an amazing location. We are so glad we stayed here! We had been travelling for hours before checking in and we were so pleased to have somewhere so wonderful to stay and rest. Comfortable, beautiful amenities, stunning location, easy to get to, and lots of peace and privacy. What more could you want?
- Kirra (8/5): Beautiful views, loads of privacy and very comfortable, modern, clean accomodation. Would stay again. - The views were amazing and the cabin was beautiful. Nothing
- Jessica (10/5): Views for days - Absolutely incredible spot, purched up on top of the hill will amazing views all the way to the mountain. Bed very comfy, beautiful little fire more that warmed the entire house.
- Andrew (10/5): Stunning views and very peaceful. Secluded - Beautiful and quiet. Owners left us to our peace and quiet. Super relaxing location. Highly recommended I had no problems
- Mike (9/5): Wish we had stayed longer. - Great location.
Great views.
Cosy cabin with everything we needed. Nothing
- Laurent (10/5): Like a dream ! - Amazing emplacement and the view !
- Suzanne (10/5): Dream stay ☺️ - You literally felt like you were on top of the world as you are so high up. The views are spectacular. You can see for miles, rivers, mountains & even the ocean.
We loved watching a storm, come & go while in the warmth of the log fire. The stars in the skylight above the bed was an unbelievable experience. I think the bed was the best bed that I have ever slept in. It literally felt like you were sleeping on a cloud.
We loved the guided tour of the distillery that the owner Bill took us on. It was very informative & we appreciated the time he took to show us around.
We would definitely love to come back & stay longer next time. Nothing
- Rebekah (10/5): Was a hard goodbye. - Incredible environment, host was amazing, house was clean, cosy, practical and beautiful.
- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional Value & Comfort - The best place to stay for a peaceful getaway. We had a perfect view from our hut with plenty of comfort. Our hosts were very kind and having the hut located next to the distillery was easy access for some nice drinks!
- Paddy (10/5): A short but delightful stay - we felt on top of the world and 'with nature' as it were. Loved it. - Extraordinarily beautiful location with the most magnificent views - simply stunning. The eco-cabin was delightful, equipped with all the necessary modern essentials without detriment to that 'get away from it all' stay. We loved the freedom from connection with the rest of the world, albeit for one night. We were met on arrival by Phil and taken straight up to the cabin - very simple and friendly. Nothing comes to mind.
