Guest Reviews
- Anna (1/5): - The property is falling apart. We had ants and 2 bees in our room. The gourmet dinner valued at $100 pp consisted of 3 small dishes (cold chewy fish) and a desert. Do not recommend. In general a very creepy place
- Tim (10/5): Foody heaven with great accommodation. - The accommodation was great. Our room was large, tastefully decorated, very clean and quiet. The bed was comfortable. The facilities were good.. a breakfast room, a media/lounge room, an evening bar and common dining area. Breakfast was provided (coffee, tea, fruit, yogurt and a range of cereals. Dinner was outstanding, most nights a 4 course dinner. The food was fine dining and equally as good as any city fine dining restaurant. Fully licensed with a good wine list. I look forward to staying here again. A big thanks to the owners. Tim and Kathleen.
- Stephen (10/5): Highly recommended to chill out in one of Tasmania’s greatest regions - Everything, the owners were great.
Lovely community
- Jerah (7/5): Yummy Dinner and lovely staff, updated facilities and building may improve it - It had personality that suited the age of the building. The shower pressure wasn’t great and the trucks zooming past early hours of the morning disturbed sleep. Another guest in the next room also kept us up as their water pipes go through our room walls.
- Fiona (9/5): - Amazing food and company.
- Marie-José (9/5): - Accueil chaleureux
Table d hôte très sympa
- Katherine (6/5): Dissatisfied for the price. - It was on the way to Cradle Mt. The price was very high considering how rundown the property is. It was too include breakfast so expected that to make it worth the value but after booking, we are told breakfast is some fruit, yogurt and muesli. Have never eaten it but thought we would try but the milk was frozen.
There was a party downstairs and someone played the drums right under us.
- Judith (8/5): Great hosts and dinner , a great atmosphere. - Character, peaceful
- Wayne (9/5): Enjoyed the food, wine and company with dinner and the room had character and was comfortable - Character and company Hear Footsteps and clean up at night
- Elizabeth (8/5): -
- Guy (10/5): -
- Angus (10/5): -
- linda (10/5): Stay with a wonderful meal - Beautiful stay which included dinner and breakfast. The meal was splendid and was a host table, providing opportunity to meet lovely people. I would suggest doing the nearby Westmoreland Falls and Alum lookout. Nil
- Jess B (5/5): Don’t. - Muesli for breakfast with a banana to share, 2 dodgy strawberries to share and a mini saucer of blueberries. Pushy emails to dine at a shared table eating an expensive meal that the chef chooses.
Being left alone in the large building from 6pm with no other guests or contact from condescending host. Realising we should have stayed elsewhere.
- Klaus (9/5): - Historisches Hotel mit entsprechender Ausstattung. Hervorragendes Restaurant. Nichts.
- Malcolm (9/5): Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. - The staff were amazing, and the property was very nice. The meal was amazing. However it was advertised as a 6 course meal, but we were served a 4 course meal. But still amazing.
- Maira (8/5): “Must” stay in this neighbourhood - Very good place to stay for a night and have an exceptional dinner.
- Venetta (8/5): A quirky place comfy warm and great food and music. - Location was good and the bedrooms were comfy and warm . The area is beautiful, we did a fabulous walk up to Alum Ciffs reserve not difficult. The food was excellent though we were the only ones there. I would have enjoyed a communal dinner . Justin was very friendly, food excellent and music interesting .
- Vanessa (8/5): Very good -
- Phoebe (10/5): Had a lovely stay at the Wandering Trout. The staff were wonderful and the rooms super comfortable. -
- Simon (9/5): Superb - Cute old building. Nice rooms with good space and with little ensuite. Good value for the price.
But the real reason to stay is the food, if you’re a foodie. We had the 6 course degustation at 7pm sitting and it was beautiful. One of the best meals we’ve had for sometime. Justin did brilliantly, we loved it. And some good drinks to match.
- Williams (9/5): Superb -
- Tuan (9/5): We loved the quiet countryside and Justin’s delicious Asian-inspired anniversary dinner. - The location is quiet and rural — perfect for a peaceful getaway.
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maria (8/5): Very good -
- Sarah (10/5): Cosy, conscious, convenient, highly recommended - conscious ammenities, cosy warm rooms, luxury linen, thoughtful breakfast provided, friendly host, convenient, highly recommend! as above
- Laegis (6/5): Pleasant - Bed was good. Had a lounge room for the gests. Right on the main road and a lot of trucks went by. Place needs some serious renovations. No wifi or TVs in room.
- Andy (8/5): Good location for tasting Tasmania - Spacious accommodation, albeit a bit spartan. Very limited breakfast.
- Lucy (8/5): Degustación dinner was delicious. - Loved the building especially the pressed metal walls and ceiling. The expectation that we wash up breakfast dishes and clean the kitchen surfaces. It would be good if they displayed check in times on the front door.
- Kimbal (9/5): Superb -
- Bo (10/5): Food, beer, bed 👌 - Old charm vibe. Exactly what is advertised - Food, beer, bed.
The bedroom/ensuite was clean and comfortable.
Super cute vanity and had beautiful original features.
The pub downstairs has a vinyl collection you are able to pick out of to play. Have live music every second Friday.
We also had the chefs menu which a the major highlight - delicious and great value for money for the quality of food.
Staff were friendly and grew up locally, so had excellent knowledge of area. Didn’t really have and dislikes… good value for money.
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hall (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marie-luisa (3/5): Very little value for money. - Good location, easy parking The house and rooms have clearly been converted from a house into a hotel with minimal investment. Bathroom very cheaply done, separated from the rest of the room by a thin, rickety sliding door, washbasin very low, though (or maybe because) an antique piece of furniture.
The TV has been removed from the wall (apparently to foster a communal spirit among guests, in the common lounge room with big screen) and the cable is still sticking out the wall!
The room wasn’t made on the second day, nor was any staff visible anywhere.
Coffee and tea making facilities are available in the communal breakfast room, and guests are asked to wash up their cups after use! This would be ok in a hostel, but not in a hotel that charges more than 200 A$ a night!
- De (7/5): Good -
- Jane (8/5): Very good - The steak meal was delicious. No platypus to be seen
- David (10/5): Great stay at the Wandering Trout. - Hosts Susie and Justin are fantastic. Made us feel very welcome and relaxed. They were super friendly with us during our stay. The room we stayed in was very comfortable, clean, and spacious. The bed was very comfortable. The upstairs dining area was clean (basics supplied), and the guest lounge was comfortable.
We had the 'Hosts Table' dinner, which was delicious. Susie and Justin were great hosts. I'll be recommending the Wandering Trout to friends and family when they travel to Tasmania. Nothing.
- Ervin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kerry (9/5): Superb -
- Adrian (9/5): Superb -
- Naralle (9/5): Superb -
- Sallybc (8/5): Very good - I couldn't get the DVD to play, and there was no one there to ask.
- Garry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Waters (8/5): Very good -
- Csuzy (10/5): Exceptional - Huge room. Great common area. Ground coffee available with breakfast.
- Ian (10/5): I’m looking forward to coming back soon. - I’ve stayed here before and wanted to return. It’s my favourite guesthouse and restaurant in Tassie. I didn’t like leaving.
- Allister (10/5): A diamond of a place. The perfect spot to relax, enjoy great food and company - Wonderful friendly staff. Incredible food and entertainment Entertainment a little noisy while food was being served.
- Susan (7/5): Good -
- Liz (8/5): Very good -
- Brenden (10/5): Nice place - Clean n tidy Dinner was expensive so we went to the pub
- Greg (8/5): Very good -
- Chrisi (10/5): A gourmet stay - Lovely spacious rooms and wonderfully comfortable bed. Light breakfast included. The highlight was the delicious 6 course dinner - every mouthful a taste sensation! Huge elevation of the usual pub fare! Service was excellent. Definitely treat yourself and stay here on the way to or from Cradle Mountain. Nothing- all good.
- Anthony (9/5): good -
- Leanne (10/5): Best spot, food was foodie heaven! Do yourself a favour. - Food was unreal, amazing, fine dining at its best in the middle of nowhere! Highly recommended, staff were amazing 🤩
- Karen (8/5): Overall a really nice place to stay. - Lovely old building. Nice large, clean room with a comfy bed. Friendly staff in the tap room, full of knowledge on the local ales/cider. Lovely outdoor patio area to sit and have a few drinks and chat with fellow travellers.
Shared tv/lounge room was nice with a very comfy couch to spread out on.
Breakfast was nice and easy. Bathroom a little small. Key to room and back door needed to be marked as to which was which as struggled a little in the dark to find the right key for the back door. Good to have a tv/lounge room to chill out in although we struggled a little to get a DVD playing. Some written instructions on how to use the media player would help for those of us technologically disadvantaged
- Nicolas (9/5): Superb -
- Philippa (10/5): Great food, beer and accommodation - Great location with lovely views. Beautifully restored old property, tastefully and thoughtfully appointed rooms. No tv in rooms to encourage socialising in the guest lounge and bar. Fabulous dinner shared with other guests for a wonderful evening. Great beer! Proprietors warm and welcoming. Nothing
- Pamela (10/5): Lovely accommodation with a great restaurant. - The room was very comfortable and had a lovely bathroom. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Very close to the caves and National Park.
- Stuart (7/5): Good -
- Shaun (10/5): Exceptional -
- S&l (4/5): Not what l expected. - Bed was comfy and nice continental breakfast. Place was old & overgrown. Hadn't had any outdoor maintenance done in a long time. Courtyard was dirty. Overpriced for what it was.
- Trevor (7/5): Overpriced - Dinner good Dined with 70 and 80 year olds and seating was bar stools with no backs - not comfortable
Breakfast poor - some muesli but BYO bread to toast and nothing else
- Stephen (8/5): Good but pricey. - Platypus in the backyard made my wife's holiday. Staff very helpful with local attractions. Two rooms is always good Found it really expensive.
- Paula (9/5): Superb - Location convenient for our trip. Close to Mole Creek caves
Liked large lounge and dining rooms
Breakkfast was simple but good.
- Beth (7/5): Good -
- Emma (9/5): Superb -
- Ester (9/5): Superb -
- Ian (9/5): Excellent - Quiet and freindly
- Kerry (7/5): Loved the extra living areas available for uses. - Great staff Stairs to the first floor
Noise from trucks passing by at night.
- Janette (8/5): Very good -
- Libby (8/5): Very good -
- Karen (8/5): Great location, easy to find and pleasant staff. I will come again for a longer stay next time. - Very clean - especially for an older building. The bedroom was large and had an excellent firm mattress. I loved the great big fluffy bath towels. I'm sorry I wasn't able to have dinner because the menu looked great. Plenty of parking as well. A coffee machine would have made it perfect I think. Also maybe some kind of snacks available at check in. It was a little bit noisy at night with the bar noise but not enough to keep me from falling asleep rather quickly.
- Leah (1/5): Disappointing. Overpriced and whole experience uncomfortable. - Not a lot No tv in room. Continental breakfast only muesli. Coffee and tea only available in common room.
- Karen (9/5): Great little stay with personal touches including breakfast - Clean, warm and personal touches were nice , staying on a night when the bar wasn’t open to the public they opened up just for us . Initial check in was a little bit confusing
Need signing for parking
- Stacey (7/5): Good - Excellent food, great entertainment, good location. Music or TV whilst nothing happening in bar. Rooms basic for price.
- Matthew (10/5): We both had a wonderful time - Awesome food cooked by Justin and just such a lovely place.
- Marie (8/5): Very good -
- Daniel (8/5): Very good -
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kym-marie (8/5): Lovely location to stay. Clean and quiet - great for spending time at Trowunna and Mole Creek Caves - lovely basic selection for breakfast with homemade muesli, local milk and yogurt
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rhonda (4/5): wouldn’t stay again and wouldn’t recommend food we may have only ones to eat there that night we should have gone to the - room comfortable and spacious food almost inedible, lamb undercooked fatty tough , very small serve and only accompanied by a stuffed tomato and few green olives
- Danial (10/5): welcoming staff, delicious food and clean and comfy room! - We really enjoyed just stay here, the room was very clean and the bed was comfy. Staff were super friendly and welcoming. The restaurant downstairs had a varied menu and the food was delicious. The included breakfast was also a lovely touch. Thanks for a great stay!
- So (9/5): overall quite satisfied, the common Tv room is big and well decorated - well decorated room with comfortable beds, breakfast was good no private parking space, need to park on street
- Craig (8/5): Well presented stylish room offering a comfortable stay. - Great room with good comfort and included breakfast was a nice touch. On a main road so quite a bit of road noise
- Murray (8/5): A nice little hidden gem. - Room was huge with lounge, bedroom and large bathroom. Whole accommodation area was really nice. Breakfast was good and a large tv lounge/common room. Food at the restaurant was great though a little expensive. Access was a little tricky. Parking on street.
- Gee (4/5): adequate - pleased to see that the platypus were still in the creek the restaurant was expensive and average
- David (6/5): Pleasant enough but disappointing. we had stayed here before and recommended it to our friends - Clean and tastefully decorated. friendly staff with easy check in Poor breakfast options. Bread for toast should have been an option
large screen provided didn’t work in a very cold lounge room. No televisions anywhere
Evening meal was nice enough but very overpriced for what we had
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Danica (9/5): Superb -
- Sharon (7/5): Good -
- John (9/5): What a great find this place was - What a great find this place was. Close to Cradle Mountain, set in a small town, whilst easy to find.
Check in was easy and quick. Room was large with a separate sitting area/eating area. There was also a shared large lounge area with a selection of movies to view.
Bed was large and comfortable.
Breakfast was served and was cereal with fresh milk, tea/coffee.
In the main bar area they had a selection of local beers to try and happily set up a tasting board.
There are meals available which are good value.
- Ronan (8/5): Comfortable with nice food and bed -
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional -
- Craig (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb - Great find on my travels. Great location, very comfortable and homey. Having the pub downstairs for dinner and a drink in the evening was very handy. Would highly recommend if you are travelling that area.
- Rod (7/5): nice stay, nice staff and looks to be a community establishment. needs and serves more tourists - great local feel and comfortable facilities and surroundings . restricted menu but understandable considering post covid tourism build back.
- Catherine (8/5): wonderful rural location. hotel restired really well. nice overnight stay. - character though there would be more emphasis on tap house beers. food was a bit light on.
- Jeanette (6/5): Ok for a nights stay if you are visiting the caves - Bed was comfortable. Its an old pub so bare that in mind when you are booking. No tv in the room or quest lounge which was disappointing.
- Jenny (9/5): Superb - A lovely old building with leafy garden. Room big and comfortable. Toiletries natural and best quality. Breakfast was a bonus. Taphouse downstairs was enjoyable with good drinks, food and live entertainment (Friday night).
