Guest Reviews
- Huimin (9/5): A stunning perch above Minca with incredible views and easy trail access - The location is unbeatable — the terrace and private balcony views over the valley are breathtaking, and I was up at 5:30am every morning to sit in the hammock and watch the birds. The hidden waterfall is 2 minutes on foot, Pozo Azul is 5 minutes away, and El Edén Minca across the way is a must for sunset drinks. The host is attentive and cooks simple, comforting meals at great prices — the fresh fruit smoothies are amazing. Pre-stay communication was slow compared to other hosts we used — expect up to a day for replies, so plan logistics early. The room initially assigned didn't match what was shown online, though the host resolved it quickly and fairly.
- Antje (8/5): - Vogelbeobachtung, Essen, Wasserfälle, sympathische, authentische Gastfamilie
- Liz (7/5): Great balcony for watching birds - Amazing balcony overlooking trees which was great for looking at birds. Staff were friendly and was around 20 min walk down into town (25 back up!) or you can get a moto taxi! The place is a bit dated and the room was stuffy despite the fan.
- Samantha (9/5): - The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable. The terrace is absolutely stunning. Excellent value for money + supporting a local family owned business.
- Manuela (10/5): Perfect stay! - The place is a paradise hidden in the middle of the mountains with incredible views, great bird spotting and beautiful quiet and private river spot. Thank you so much, we had an amazing time!
- Noah (7/5): Good for people who love nature and are not too exact with cleanliness - Exceptional personnel but no warm water/shower and not for someone who needs it clean.
The view was amazing No warm shower
- Lund (10/5): Perfect setting - The setting was beautiful; perfect. It was peaceful with birdfeeders attracting all kinds of birds - lots of hummingbirds and even saw a toucan.
Staff were attentive and friendly and my room was extremely clean. Nothing.
- Sofia (10/5): Fantastic views! - Great service, tidy rooms..
Fantastic views to the mountains!
- Lourdes (6/5): -
- Lindsey (10/5): Views, friendly staff/owner, food, bird watching, proximity to town and nature. - Firstly, it’s a perfect location. As I had hoped, it was just enough out of town and up the hill to see the views, but still walkable from town. It’s also walking distance to a waterfall a bit further up the road. We also enjoyed a variety of birds right from the terrace. However, the owner and staff really made the difference. They are friendly and helpful. The food (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) were amazing. They have a large menu selection. The owner, Julio Cesar, really cares about his hotel and the experience of the guests. I would definitely stay here again.
- Clementine (6/5): The terrace ! - The terrace is nice with a fantastic view on the forest. Good breakfast. Even if you are far away from the center you can hear the noise from the street (motorbikes). Fridge didn’t work to keep our water fresh while it’s super hot outside. Room not super clean. 30minutes walk from the center if you want to have dinner or need moto taxi.
- Jorge (10/5): INCREIBLE ... Lo recomiendo al 1000% Tv in the rooms is necessary. Tv en las habitaciones son necesarias.
- Christer (10/5): Exceptional - The best things about this place is the view and the staff. The valley below is gorgeous, especially in the morning. José was a great host and helped us out with various questions throughout our stay. The Hostal has a very friendly vibe. I also recommend visiting the waterfalls in the area, especially Cascada Perdida and Oido del Mundo which are less crowded. Nothing
- Silvan (8/5): Very good - The breakfast was simple but tasty.
The terrace open to the valley side, a nice place to bird-watch and eat your meals is the best feature of this place.
It cools of at night nicely!
Your a bit above the town of Minca, so it is quiet at night. Bring insect repellent, even a light pair of long pants for the evening..!
- Ava (9/5): Superb - An amazing place to stay and at a reasonable price. The family who run it are so welcoming and helpful and really do everything they can to make your stay as good as possible. The location and view from the terrace are idyllic.
- Daniel (4/5): Disappointing - The view. The rooms, leaking roof, grumpy staff
- Doriane (10/5): Exceptional - The family that run the place is amazing and really friendly, they were the highlight of our stay. Thank you for everything!
Enjoying breakfast while looking at the birds was a plus ❤️ Cold showers
- Jessica (7/5): Overall this is place has a great location and is very affordable! - The property had a great location and the view from the patio was breathtaking! The food service was a bit slow and the rooms could have been kept up better
- Krithika (10/5): Beautiful mountain retreat - Beautiful common deck overlooking the mountains. Friendly staff, clean rooms and showers and comfortable beds. Lovely 15 minute walk from Minca.
- Caroline (9/5): Superb - We had such a great stay at Hostal Alto de la Montana. the view from the terrace is unbelievable, and the hoste are super nice, they even showed us some toucans with the binoculars!
- Martine (10/5): Fantastic hostal with wonderful view - The family that runs this hostal makes you feel so welcome. The fantastic view from the communal terrasse. The hammocks The nice and not expensive food. The beautiful, modern rooms with great decoration. The care of everything. Nothing. I loved to stay there
- Ričardas (9/5): Superb - The view from the terrace is outstanding! There are binoculars you can use to spot birds. The owner helped to spot some toucans, and there are feeders for hummingbirds so you can constantly see them. Very noisy family was staying at the hotel at the same time. Kinda ruined all the tranquillity of the place.
- Amy (10/5): Exceptional - The staff is fantastic! So attentive. It feels like staying at someone's home.
- Louis (9/5): Superb -
- Domenic (8/5): Wonderful view but a long uphill walk from town. - The view from the terrace was really amazing and once we saw a rainbow/sunset combo that was unlike anything I’ve seen. Free coffee and breakfast was good and the staff seemed nice. I also really liked the decoration of the rooms. The hotel had a private trail to a very gorgeous spot on the river, and was convenient to Pozo Azul. The location is a blessing and a curse, it is nice and quiet and out in nature, but it is a LONG half hour from town, completely uphill. The restaurant was closed, as was everything nearby, so it was a lot of walking up and down the hill to and from town. Also, the staff was very nice, but it felt like we were interrupting every time we asked for something. Finally, the showers were very cold.
- Tobin (9/5): Lovely stay with mountain views - We loved relaxing on the balcony of this comfortable stay. The view of the mountains was stunning. The staff were super kind and helped us a lot. We liked using their private path to the river to swim. All of the food we ate here was delicious! The location was close to Pozo Azul and other waterfalls we didn't visit. We found the walk to Minca town took about 25 minutes with our kids, but on the way we spotted howler monkeys one day. We booked a room for 5 and found it was too crowded. Once we split up into two rooms we were much more comfortable. The double, triple, and quad rooms are much nicer than the one for five. Our expectations for bird sighting was too high and we only spotted a few varieties. We did see toucans with the help of Senor Julio.
- Jeremy (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing staff. Incredibly helpful. Wonderful view.
- Ali (9/5): Grwat value for money, beautiful surroundings. Great place to stay - Lovely little property about 1km away from town.
The family are absolutely lovely and very welcoming.
Breakfast was simple but did the job.
the views are incredible and you can sit for hours watching the birds, and trying to spot toucans.
The room was clean and spacious. The shower was either boiling hot or freezing cold, and when we told them they were straight away to try and fix it but we’re unable to.
the bed was comfy enough but very noisy when you turned over.
- Lukas (10/5): Exceptional - Really nice quiet place 10 min outside of Minca, great view from their terrace and really friendly staff.
- Janessa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Eliza (4/5): Way over priced - View and river access are great. And not too far from town. At first the owner pointed out we has accidentally booked as Colombian (a problem with the app) and this caused tax to be applied unnecessarily. I thought he was going to help correct the booking, but no... we paid more than required. AND it was way too expensive in any case. We chose a triple room because it was advertised as having a balcony. What it actually had was a window to a shared balcony. So you could wake up to the sound of visitors having breakfast.
- Kathleeen (8/5): Very good - Friendly accommodating staff
fantastic bird viewing
good location Hot water in shower wasn’t working
- Audrey (9/5): Superb -
- Caroline (5/5): not a great place, please change the bed linen and get a/c! - lovely view from balcony for bird watching Very small hot room with fan no air conditioning, fan simply stirred around the hot air. we couldn’t have the windows open due to mosquitoes-there was no mesh. The bed was awful, really hard it gave us both backaches and the ghastly orange polyester sheets! so if it wasn’t hot enough already, nylon sheets!!!
there were also plastic covers on the pillows (removed straight away!).
The breakfast was minimalist- 2 SLICES OF BANANA! on the tiniest bowl of granola a bit of scrambled egg, a scrape of margarine and a slice of bread, one small coffee.
Also be aware this place is at the top of the hill ( name gives it away!) it’s not in the village but a good 30 minutes hot slog uphill
- Daniela (8/5): We had an amazing stay - Waking up to the view and the many bird species was priceless! We had toucans, aracaris, tanagers and much more super near by every morning. The hosts were super helpful and accommodating and overall really sweet. The place is not in the midst of the hustle bustle of Minca, but still very near by/walking distance. The shower pressure was super low, basically a trickle. The food was not great, but also not the worst. This again was all worth it.
- Lalage (8/5): Amazing views - The view from the balcony is amazing. The room was comfortable. It is truly a family run hostel. There was no mosquito-screen on the window in the room, and it gets quite hot, but if you open the window there is a lot of mosquito's so take bug spray.
- David (5/5): Passable - Stunning location and views. At times It felt like the managers private space and we were encroaching upon it.
- Lauren (6/5): Nice views on a budget - The view from the patio is really nice, probably the best in the area. The manager offered to help us spot Toucans one afternoon which we appreciated. The listing said that the Hostel had a kitchenette for guests to use, but when we arrived we were told it was only for the restaurant. This was particularly annoying because we had travelled from Santa Marta with a lot of food shopping planning to cook our own meals which we then had to throw away. The restaurant was quite overpriced and the food wasn’t great. The room was fine, but the bed had a plastic cover over the mattress which wasn’t particularly comfortable. During our 3 nights stay, we only managed to use the Wi-Fi for around 1 hour as the rest of the time it wasn’t working.
- Zdravko (7/5): Good -
- Mduk (8/5): Very good - A large terrace overlooking the jungle canopy, great for birdwatching no food after 7
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional - There is a very good balcony for birding and even a lobby copy of Birds of Minca. Julius Caesar knows the birds and is a good spotter. We IDed 20 birds there in a couple days. (And saw but not well enough to ID a few more). And he brought us coffee at dawn on the balcony! It is a quiet location but close enough to walk into town. Very near Pozo Azul. Definitely recommend strongly. No bathmat. No big deal but something that would be an improvement given the shower design.
- Anonymous (9/5): Such scenery from a hammock I have never beheld, it now rests in my neurons for my dreams to behold. - Beautiful views of Cerro Kennedy from the balcony restaurant. Comfortable and spacious accommodation. Staff were very friendly, engaging and helpful throughout. Roadside room can experience noise from passing traffic, particularly early in the morning.
- David (7/5): decent place close to Pozo Azul falls - nice location about a mile uphill from Minca. Shower head hot water heater temperamental. Wi-Fi went down occasionally. Traffic a little loud.
- Lena (8/5): Relaxed place - Amazing view and very attentive staff. They handed us binoculars to watch birds from the terrace. The hostel has a very relaxed vibe. The bed was not so comfortable and made us sleep not so well.
- Peter (10/5): Beautiful place with friendly people - Friendly and kind family that own the place. The father got up at 5am one morning to make us a take away breakfast for our early morning bird watching trip. The women who work in the restaurant are really nice too :-)
Beautiful view from the restaurant area. Plenty of birds around the place to watch and photograph. Comfortable hammocks to relax in.
Hot water in the room and a much more comfortable bed than the one we had in Tayrona.
It's a relaxing a peaceful place in the jungle. But also has good WiFi. Local dogs woke me up at 3am with loud barking. Not too many eating options close to the accommodation, but it's not too far to walk into town.
- Michael (9/5): Great view, peaceful surroundings! - The staff were friendly and arranged a shuttle for us to Cartagena at short notice, the breakfast was good and view from the breakfast area was great as it overlooked the hills! The shower was cold but that's a thing in most hostels in Colombia! It's a 20 minute walk downhill into town but you can get a motorbike taxi back up for 5,000 peso/$1.5
- Gareth (10/5): 10/10 Stay - Everything about our stay was great, room was comfortable, food was great, views from the balcony were exceptional and the couple who ran the place were so incredibly friendly and welcoming. Initially I thought the distance from the centre would be an issue but the public transport in Minca, and the views, makes this not an issue at all.
- Searching (7/5): Good -
- Díaz (10/5): Quiet place, the staff is friendly and always available to help you. - well located, close to the Minca town but far enough to avoid the noise at night
