- Dustin (10/5): -
- Rebecca (10/5): Staying here gave us the time we needed to switch off and relax after days of travelling. I’ve never felt as peaceful as - This property was so unique, so much effort has been put into the layout and decor. It felt safe and homely, we wish we’d stayed longer.
- Jane (10/5): - Beautiful quaint dug out that has been modernised and is truly unique. Very comfortable to stay in, the beds were nice and fitted with electric blankets which we didn't need as being underground it was a very comfortable temperature. The only issue we had was we couldn't shut the bathroom door. It just didn't give us privacy while using these facilities. And it was a small issue
- Myriam (10/5): Exceptional, the best dugout we’ve seen! - Amazing dugout with everything you might need and more. Big accommodation, done to very tastefully and to high standard. We felt very welcome. Highly recommended!!
- Bonnee (9/5): An unforgettable stay—unique, beautifully styled, incredibly comfortable. - Staying in this underground dugout in White Cliffs was an incredible and truly unique experience.
From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by how beautifully presented and thoughtfully designed the space was. The dugout was not only immaculately clean but also styled with care, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made it feel like a home rather than just accommodation.
The views were absolutely spectacular—something you simply can’t replicate anywhere else. Waking up and taking in the surrounding landscape was a highlight of our stay.
Everything we needed was provided, and more. The space was comfortable, well-equipped, and clearly set up with attention to detail to ensure guests have an easy and enjoyable stay.
If you’re looking for something different, memorable, and genuinely special, this is it. We would absolutely stay again.
- Grant (8/5): - A very unique experience glad we done it Nothing
- Jason (10/5): Our stay was excellent. The host could not do more for us, from providing transport to providing advice & direction - Location & how unique it was. Nothing negative to report.
- Yiwen (10/5): Super cool stay, would book again! - Huge water filter provided in the kitchen was full when we arrived, the mini tourist info centre at the front of the house (many pamphlets on things to do and see in the area), very unique property, the photos that showed the house before renovation, the decor, many utensils provided in the kitchen
- Aaron (10/5): Absolutely worth every cent - Location was absolutely amazing!
Such a beautiful stay & so peaceful and cosy I loved everything
- Verrall (10/5): Great change of scenery loved staying in the dugout. - Everything it was a lovely experience. Sonia met us & showed us around. We went on her tour the following morning. Nothing
- Anne (10/5): Blown away by the view, the beautiful bohemian abode and the helpfulness of Ad, our host. - Adequate basic supplies, but the real bonus was the hi-tech inclusions in this remote, quirky, artful underground home. Another bonus was being able to meet the owner, and see some of his other creative work. The bugs. They like to follow you in! Be prepared to evict a few beetles, crickets and flies because they also like caves. The host had done a great job with screens but little critters are very sneaky.
- Leone (3/5): - The decor was appealing, the Outlook was nice There was little or no ventilation. I found only one ventilation shaft which was lower than almost all of the ceiling space and was barely functioning , there were fans available, but they didn't get the temperature down.and were rather noisy.
The heat was really bad...it was the middle of summer but dugouts are supposed to be cool, this one was almost unbearable, it was a lot cooler outside than in. The only door needed to be closed to keep animals insects and snakes out
- Diane (9/5): Correspondence to where you could dine was not up to date. - Very relaxing and comfortable Detail to eye dusting wasn’t done thoroughly. Floor seem to be a little gritty. Entrance allowed rain to come under door.
- Greg (10/5): Just do it! Amazing place and excellent host comms. - Amazing all round experience! We were a little concerned about a weather warning that the BOM put out for flooding in the area. On arrival to town, we noticed a small creek crossing was starting to flow over the road. Then just after we checked in the rain came in heavier, a little concerned about being cut off from the pub (or being at the Pub and not able to get back) haha might not have been bad thing either way! I contacted the owner who was surprised about the rain ... He reasured us if there was an issue, it would be ok. All was fine overnight but on the drive out some of the local roads (minor local rds not required to get to to or from the accomodation were a bit sloppy) they were prob no good for a 2wd) but we were fine. After we left we learnt that around 60mm of rain fell and now the main road from and to Willcania is closed. My biggest mistake .... Not staying another night so that I had an excuse not to turn up at work the next day! 5 star would stay again:) Smoke alarms have a tendency to cheer you on whilst cooking... No biggy but be mindful if cooking a steak or something like that.

- Barbara (8/5): Fantastisch verblijf op een mooie rustige locatie! - Prachtig uitzicht, smaakvol ingericht, goede bedden, zeer volledig, leuke boeken, schoon en informatie aanwezig. -

- Greig (10/5): Absolutely fabulous place to stay. The best on our trip so far. Thank you. - What an amazing place to stay. Unique location and quirky building, exquisitely decorated. Around every corner was another delight. The bed was very comfortable and the view from the kitchen was great. We couldnt have asked for more. Leaving.
- Andrew (10/5): - This place was exceptional, well looked after and decorated. Such a nice treat to experience a dugout house. Nothing really.
- Patricia (10/5): The best experience ever!!! - The property is absolutely lovely and one of the best stays we have ever experienced. It is an underground cave house built from an old mine, offering a truly unique experience. While it gives you the authentic feeling of staying in a cave, it also has all the modern comforts that make you feel completely at home. Bring your food supply as there is nothing less than 3 hours away to buy groceries and food. I recommend can watch the stars directly from the backyard. It is truly out of this world. If you are lucky, you may even see a shooting star, just as we did.
Sonya, the manager, was exceptional. She was incredibly supportive from beginning to end, always helpful, kind, and attentive. We highly recommend booking a short tour with her. She will show you hidden local gems! This feedback is not about the property, but about missing and incorrect information on Booking.com.
The town is extremely remote, with no phone or 4G reception, no grocery store, and no restaurants. The nearest supermarkets are in Cobar or Broken Hill, which makes bringing your own food supplies essential. None of this is mentioned on the listing. Luckily I checked on Google maps before-head.
Additionally, the address provided on the website is incorrect. The navigation led us to the wrong location, and with no reception to check possible emails and a child in the car, we had to knock on the locals' door and ask for help and it was very stressful as people are not out and about. Thankfully, the manager was contacted and guided us to the property.
Booking.com should improve the accuracy of the information to help future guests have a smooth stay.
- Annette (10/5): Experience White Cliffs like a local! Stay in a dugout and have dinner at the pub! - Just loved staying in this dugout. It is so well appointed-very spacious and comfortable in a truly intriguing part of Australia Nothing it was all just great
- Wendy (10/5): Our family rates it a 100/10 experience! Will definitely recommend it to family and friends! - The cave like experience, the modern decor and a great host! It was quite remote and a long drive to get there! But it was so worth it!
- Cross (9/5): - Great atmosphere and plenty of room. Trying to find the place. A sign at street level would have helped.
Not having access to the laundry.
- Rebecca (10/5): -
- Dave (9/5): Loved it and would like to come again for a longer period. - Well kept and comfortable. It was in a very peaceful quiet location that was easy to relax looking at the sunset, sunrise and stars at night. Very easy to book in with no contact access. Nothing
- Carmel (10/5): Luxury in original authentic dugout in White Cliffs. - Location, stunning view over the plains particularly at sunrise, impeccably well-appointed decor, comfort, amenities and facilities. Good communication with Host. A memorable stunning stay, thank you.
- Ian (10/5): - It was indeed a unique experience to find excellent facilities in a cave 😃
- Leigh (10/5): - Wow Wow Wow. Could not fault the joint. Not just Accom, an experience in itself. I rarely write reviews but could bang on about this place all day.
- Clay (10/5): Outstanding unique underground stay in White Cliffs - An absolutely outstanding place to stay. The refurbished dugout is superb. This isn't a case of finding somewhere to stay in White Cliffs, it's a case of going to White Cliffs so you can stay at the Daybreak Dugout! There was nothing to dislike.
- SCOTT (10/5): - Everything. Amazing place, amazing view and will book again
- Andrin (10/5): Great experience and stay at Daybreak Dugout - Daybreak Dugout captured the experience nicely, with some photos of its heritage and with generous spaces and amenities. Everything was uniquely presented and the outside provided an equally tranquil area to wind down from the day. -
- Devendra (9/5): Great place to visit - Clean , spacious 2 br house with a view , not claustrophobic, unique dug out house. Not much facilities in town. Super tour of the opal mine and dug out house , must do trip None
- Michael (8/5): Great place to relax and get away from the world for a day or longer - It was a tick the box experience to spend a night beneath the surface. Nice quiet location with great sunrise. Walking distance to motel / food
- Scott (10/5): Great stay at White Cliffs. - Quirky peaceful spotless accommodation with a great view. We couldn’t stay longer .
- Maurice (10/5): - Everything was amazing, decor, beds, layout, kitchen, facilities and the quiet. Hard to fault, Aircon was a bit noisy and it was difficultto find the place. .
- Matt (10/5): -
- Michelle (10/5): Great experience staying in a dugout that was styled to perfection. - It was quite unique, modern & clean. It was obvious a lot of thought went into the styling of decorations & furniture which were excellent, right down to the front door feature. Loved staying in a dugout - great experience. Loved everything.
- Anne (10/5): A magnificent dugout experience - Magnificently renovated dugout - stylish, comfortable and very well equipped. A great location, with a lovely outback outlook and beautiful sunrise views. Host AD was very friendly, communicative and helpful.
- steven (10/5): Perfect - Just lived it because it was sooooo different staying under the ground Nothing
- Sin Yin (9/5): Great and surprisingly modern - Surprisingly modern, clean and well furnished for a location as remote and dusty as this. Even the bathroom was very well appointed and comfortable. We enjoyed our stay. Not much. Sofa could be more modern and comfortable, but that may be too much to ask for.
- Marney (10/5): -
- Colleen (9/5): Great underground experience with ensuite - Had everything you could need except for laundry facilities but just did offer to arrange it is you needed.
- Smith (10/5): Amazing Amazing Amazing - Daybreak Dugout was the most amazing experience. Every feature was carefully designed to make the accommodation experience wonderful.
From the view of approaching storm clouds to the beautifully presented bedrooms, all aspects were a delight to share with your travel companions. Absolutely nothing 👍
- melinda (10/5): -
- Anna (10/5): - Great location and beautiful house. Very comfy and had everything we needed.
- Patrick (9/5): Very comfortable accommodation. Nicely furnished and well equipped. ⁹ - Some form of natural light (such as a skylight) in the innermost room would be nice but I can see the difficulty.
- Gopal (10/5): Unforgettable stay - Amazing location, concept and interior. Tastefully furnished, imaginatively equipped as generously provisioned. Beautiful sunrise and clear night sky. One of the most memorable places I have stayed Absolutely NOTHING
- Catherine (9/5): -
- Colin (10/5): There are not enough superlatives to describe Daybreak Dugout nor the experience of living underground it offered. - Everything - interior design, beautifully decorated, facilities, the experience it offered to name just a few There wasn’t anything at all not to like
- Melinda (10/5): We loved our stay. Beautiful outlook and so quiet. - Everything. Very unique. Nothing
- lancashirelass (10/5): A unique accommodation experience that was the highlight of my outback trip! - This unique accommodation experience was the highlight of my work trip. The hosts gave great instructions about what to expect in this outback accommodation, how to access the accommodation.
I loved the fact they offered an early check in which was helpful in preparing for the work I was undertaking that day. To be honest, the bed was comfy, the kitchen amazing, loungeroom great. The only downside was the water pressure in the shower - the bathroom was amazing though. I understand water is at a premium in outback towns so it was understandable, and a minor inconvenience.
- Steve (10/5): Fantastic, totally different to anything we've done before. - This place has a great wow factor when entering. It is spotless and well decorated. If you want to experience living in a dug out try this place. Don't be put off by the expression " dug out" you'll be pleasantly surprised. It is close to everything pub shop etc, there's not much else in white cliffs but locals are friendly. If try noodling for opal you may get the bug like many others and extend your stay. Put it on your bucket list. If you like emus they are wandering down the main St.
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Taylor (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional - It is a once in a lifetime experience. Only I’ll do it again and again…

- Faulconer (9/5): One of a kind accommodation with stunning sunrises. - What an amazing property! Never stayed somewhere like this before. The kids were giddy with excitement. It was very comfortable for a family of 4 and well set up. The sunrises were next level. Minor snafu with the lockbox door code, I never got the email with the code and took a few minutes to get onto the host but was in within 10 minutes. Given how gorgeous the sunrises are, it would have been nice to have a comfortable sitting area to go out and enjoy them.
- Jane (10/5): Surprisingly fabulous accommodation - This was a wonderful surprise on our trip. It is hard to tell from the humble facade that there’s a gorgeous, spacious and well appointed house inside the rock. We were all amazed when we walked through the front door and explored the inside. Would definitely recommend staying here.
- Sabnam (9/5): Best kept secret - The place was immaculate. Kitchen and bathroom was fully equipped. The view from the kitchen window was breathtaking. The dug-out was like a home away from home. Close to town centre. Thank you to the host. The host provided us with everything. Millions times better than most hotels you would find in Sydney.
- Kay (10/5): Fantastic opportunity to experience living underground. The stars on a night was spectacular. - A table and chair in the kitchen area would be nice. Can’t relax on stools
- Victoria (10/5): A must do experience! - The unique experience this property provided. Th owner has done an excellent job to make your experience a wonderful one. Nothing
- William (10/5): A bucket list experience 😊 - Fabulous place we loved it
- Wayne (10/5): For something very different, completely worth the price. - Bigger than we thought, enough to get the real feel of an underground home as corridors meandered into the hillside. So quiet, comfortable beds and seating. Included Wifi worked very well. Sunset over the desert viewed from the other side of the hill, a short walk from the home. An entire family of Emus pecking around the front yard while we ate breakfast watching through the sizeable kitchen window.
- Wendy (8/5): It was great to experience underground living. The property was very clean and well appointed communication with the ho - Unique
- Marianne (7/5): Good -
- Katarina (9/5): Would have been perfect excepting the heat in accommodation. - Beautifully decorated. Very clean. Has everything you need. Accommodation was was very hot. Had no reprieve from heat.
Property needs air conditioning & better ventilation. Had fans suppled but they were noisy. Sleep was difficult, especially on the front room.
- Susan (9/5): Superb -
- Matt (10/5): Exceptional -
- Philip (8/5): Very good -
- Janis (8/5): A comfy and well appointed base for exploring the area. Great sunrise views! - Amazing location in a beautifully appointed home.
Hosts had the fans on so the home was cool when we arrived (late in day).
A fascinating area to explore. Water pressure wasn't great but I think that is to be expected in this area and in this type of home.
- Kay (10/5): Amazing place. - My bucket list includes a stay in a dugout, and this one did not disappoint. It was an amazing place, beautifully furnished, with a modern kitchen and bathroom. We did appreciate all the fans, as it was 45 degrees that day, but much cooler inside.
- Hayley (10/5): Exceptional - We had a wonderful 2 night stay at the Daybreak Dugout. Such a unique property in an absolutely stunning location. Beautifully furnished and very clean and comfortable. We loved sitting outside watching the emus and kangaroos just across the road from us! Nil
- Hanabeth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional - Super unique place to stay. Beautiful views. Easy to find once you read instructions.
- Elena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Josh (10/5): A quiet and relaxing time, in an awesome and unique accomodation to experience an opal town - Clean, comfortable and modernly furnished accomodation to come back to after a day of fossicking N/a
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cathy (10/5): A night underground - A unique experience with a great design inside. We arrived to a welcoming home with the lights and fans set ready for us.
- Samantha (10/5): Exceptional -
- Butler (10/5): Magical - Would stay again, absolutely amazing, plan to stay a few days overnite was not long enough. Not a single thing
- Lee (8/5): A great experience to stay underground in this beautifully renovated dugout house - Loved the view from kitchen window - also great kitchen facilities where we were able to enjoy a home cooked meal. Also loved the quirky decor. Inspiring space for a paint dabble while escaping the heat.
- Graham (10/5): Dugout bucket list ticked. - The uniqueness. The peace and quiet and the view was spectacular.
It was an experience we won't forget. 😀 That we were there on a weekend. A stay during the week would have shown more town activities.
The mattress on the bed was too soft for us.
Laundry facilities would have been brilliant.
- Rod (10/5): poor speed....unfortunately couldn't watch a football match on my laptop 😢 - unique spectacular everything was perfection 👌 Internet
- Melissa (8/5): Excellent find! Great to experience underground sleeping - Location great, new house, updated, cool to stay underground, something different Please get some Scissors for the kitchen to open packaging please :)
Pots and pan drawer took a minute to find, maybe some labels?
House didn't seem to breathe/ventilate too well, bit stuffy, maybe more fans? Or aircon in the kitchen room?
- Jenny (9/5): A cool and comfortable place to stay. Would highly recommend. - The place was much larger than I expected. All the spaces were quirky and comfortable and decorated with interesting furniture and objects. Loved the view from the picture window in the kitchen. Good information provided on the local area and attractions and responsive host.
- Anne (9/5): Modern and comfortable accommodation underground - Impressive location: dug inside the hill ! The host is very sweet and understanding. It is decorated with taste and quite comfortable. The whole place is clean and welcoming. It is well equipped with everything to cook and spend good time in White Cliffs. We had initially planned for 2 guests only, and ended up with 4, which the host nicely agreed, although it was a bit expensive.
