Guest Reviews
- Gevindu (8/5): - Hotel location was very nice. staff friendly. Food was nice but bit expensive. Bathroom was well designed. Room didnt have a view. Room design needs improvement. Less furniture and less comfortable furniture. insufficient room amenities.
- suchitra (9/5): Comfortable - Natural and serene surroundings No phone in room and no wifi
- suchitra (8/5): For any needs no phone in room to call and ask.Need to walk up to reception to request for room needs - Natural No phone and wifi in room

- Alia (10/5): We loved the Deer Park and would definitely come again. - We absolutely loved our stay at Deer park. It is a beautiful hotel in a lovely location near the lake where you can watch the sunset in the evenings. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Most days we had the pool to ourselves (the pool itself is like a lovely oasis situated in the jungle - and the pool attendant was so helpful and friendly). The rooms were spacious, super comfortable beds and by far the best feature was the outdoor bathroom and shower - where you can hear all of the jungle noises. Fantastic place to stay. I think the food was a bit over priced in the restaurant, especially the buffet, but the food was good quality and tasty.
- Shanaka (1/5): -
- Shane (10/5): Magical -
- Seneviratne (1/5): Bad - like ghost town, we didn't stay in this hotel. Due to theses conditions, we immediately realize we couldn't stay .Thankfully, after calling around to other in the area, we were able to quick secure Hotel Aliya THANKYOU. no power, this hotel good for a horror film ,i don't wont to explant really scary.
- Keshinee (9/5): Beautiful place - Beautiful location over a lake. Great food and helpful staff. Outdoor bathroom and clean room. Beautiful pool among the trees. The bed was upstairs and with a toddler it was little bit hard.
- Gunawardane (1/5): Bad -
- Martin (10/5): Tropical oasis - Colonial feel hotel ...lots of local wildlife birds and macaques! Like a tropical oasis. Was very quiet when we were there so bonus👍🏼Staff very kind and helpful. Tuk Tuk to Polonnaruwa Dont hesitate its great
- Essex (10/5): It was ten out of ten. - We loved everything. Lovely staff, great food and facilities.
- Moganaraju (7/5): Will stay for the location. - Facilities and location was good. Nice view of the lake. Pleasant and polite staff. Restaurant staff inexperienced and not trained to handle large groups.
- Ramona (10/5): Really nice place to stay at while in Sri Lanka - Location looks amazing, you feel like being in the jungle, room was nice, great view. From time to time there was an issue with the water in our room, bit was fixed in 2-3 minutes. Would be great to have phones in the room to call reception. SPA facilities should be improved, but overall services nice.
- Esther (10/5): Nature and relax - The room was beautiful, with a very nice view of the lake and the bathroom was amazing, the experience of having shower in the middle of the nature is so great! We also enjoy having drinks at night in the beautiful garden in front of the lake. The breakfast and the dinner is delicious. We took a massage and it was so relaxing… a perfect place to enjoy the nature (safaris are quite near) and relax Everything was perfect
- Domenico (10/5): Luxurious stay - The property is one of the best ones I have ever stayed in Sri Lanka. You feel luxurious as soon as you enter in, where the staff welcomes you to light up the oil to feel at home.
The hotel has also kept the nature around, building houses around trees and including them in the design. It looks like a town village where you can go around and discover new and beautiful corners at every step. There is even a bathtub facing the lake of Giritale and you can enjoy a bath with an incredible view.
The staff is super helpful and the food was delicious! We had buffet dinner there and we enjoyed every plate. The breakfast was also really delicious! The property offers a small spa which is open until 9pm. Unfortunately, the sauna and the Turkish bath were not functioning when we arrived so we had to wait a bit (but the Turkish bath did not work) to use them. This could be avoided by having them always on, even though it’s not eco friendly.
- Laura (5/5): Dinner took 1.5 hours to be delivered and staff complained they were busy. - Good location and setting Very dangerous stairs in the small guest houses and lack of warm water in shower
- Arne (9/5): Great resort in the jungle with exceptional staff and buffet - Great clean hotel on a huge property in the middle of the jungle. Rooms are big and quiet. At night you hear jungle noises of all the animals. Great experience! The bathroom is outdoors, which is fantastic. The staff is exceptional and always at your service. The guy responsible for the pool is really friendly and there to help. Our first night the hotel didn't have a lot of guests so we had to order dinner a la carte. The dinner was good. The second night there were more people in the hotel and we could take the buffet dinner and breakfast. The buffet is exceptional. Both the dinner and breakfast. I don't think I have ever in my life had such a nice tasting buffet. Compliments to the cooks and staff. Our driver Rajith was also a great companion during our stay in Sri Lanka. He's a really friendly and knowledgeable guy. He does everything he can to guide you around and speaks French and English. We can recommend him (rajithvishantha@yahoo.com, Tel:
+94772633337) We didn't have enough hot water to fill the hot tub. There is not much to do outside of the hotel but the hotel is so big you don't have to leave.
- Deepak (8/5): Kitchen mgmt - no care attitude - View from lobby great… not the same from room. No balcony for rooms! No care attitude from kitchen mgmt - asked for local food hopper for breakfast ( never happened the 3 nights we stayed)!
- Indira (4/5): I will still go but that manager is not customer oriented. He is not trained. - Location and garden The staff are confused. The manager is chaotic
- Gail (6/5): Beautiful views and amazing staff - The staff were incredibly attentive, polite and kind. The room was beautiful including the outdoor bathroom and view of the lake which we loved! Beautiful setting and such lovely staff. The food was not the best we have had in sri lanka but the setting and staff made up for this.
- Patricia (8/5): Beautiful location - Location, facilities
- Monty (7/5): Beautiful hotel and location. We absolutely loved the concept of feeling you were in the jungle and the views over the l - Location was great - the views from the front deck/jacuzzi were stunning looking over the lake. The hotel and the rooms were very pretty, and you felt like you were in the jungle (very peaceful and relaxing being in nature!) We also loved the outdoor rain shower and bath. We visited the hotel in off season and were two of only a few guests at the hotel, therefore this seemed to impact the level of service provided. The full food & beverage menu was not available and a lot of items we asked for they didn’t have. We were only offered a limited dinner menu also. There were many staff present at the hotel, but they were not very attentive, which is surprising as most of the time it was only us there. For example, on the first night, we spent a full hour in the hot tub without being given towels or being offered any drinks/food, and 8 staff members were present. The staff were friendly, however, and were lovely to speak to.
- Amit (9/5): Wonderful hotel immersed in nature - The staff were wonderful & they accommodated our family very well. Notably we wanted Sri Lankan dishes not offered on the menu and they gladly catered for this.
We stayed with two young kids and they loved the wildlife that is available at the property.
- Jill (8/5): Peaceful retreat - The swimming pool was wonderful and the outdoor showers were lovely. Loved that there was a pool table and such a selection of mocktails. Staff super polite, but so reserved that we didn't feel like we were with friends, like you do at a smaller hotel. The fish ponds are divine. I didn't like that the rooms were not set up to our requirements. We had selected four beds across two rooms, even paid extra for an additional bed. But both rooms were just doubles when we turned up. It got sorted, but we were hot and tired from the journey, so would have liked this correct when we arrived. We loved the buffet breakfast, but it wasn't on every morning. Didn't feel the need for the air con on all the time, so would have liked to have grills on the doors and windows - so we could have them open but keep the monkeys out.
- Richard (7/5): Good - The location and view overlooking the lake along with the hot tub. Rooms were very comfortable. The Hotel held a private party in the function room above the restaurant. The loud music could be heard throughout the complex unil 11.30pm and you could not hear each other talk in the bar area due to the loud music.
The management took no notice or responsibility of the request to turn the music down slightly so we could hear ourselves talk.
Disappointing as this was a supposed 5* hotel.
- Giulia (8/5): Very good -
- Anura (9/5): Superb -
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lakshika (9/5): Excellent - Nature blending
- Sharon (8/5): Comfortable Charming and amazing location to use as accommodation to visit the cultural triangle - Staff, location. Surrounds of the property are wonderful allowing a variety of wildlife to visit the space and delight. The Wifi was poor. There were no bedside lamps only powerful overhead light in the room, which made it difficult for my husband to sleep whilst I read. And vice versa
- Cecilia (8/5): Lovely setting but a bit worn out - The hotel setting was amazing. With a lot of spaces to sit and relax and wonderful view to the lake.
The outdoor shower was a very nice and modern feature. Bed was comfortable
The pool was lovely and it was always attended by the poolman guarding us from the monkeys It seems. they didn’t pay that much attention to the cleaning in the bathroom
The hotel is a bit dated. All the door knobs were too deteriorated. Not a nice feeling to touch.
The staff didn’t speak very well English
The spa experience was not so pleasant. We had to wait for ages for the staff to arrive. And they were not too competent. The spa area may have been nice at one point but now it is too worn out
- Daniel (8/5): both very statisfactory and dissapointing at the same time. - Because we arrived a day earlier than booked, we did not get our orriginal requested room (cottage) with lake-view... but got a room (cottage) with no view at all.
The room itself was nice. Duplex with semi-outdoor bathroom including spacious bathtub. The roof of the bathroom as open (protected with a net to prevent animals or insects coming in)
Very good bed.
The hotel is very nice with a beautifull view on the lake (there is a road in between but you almost not notice this)
A very spacious and nice swimming pool.
Breakfast and diner was buffet with plenty of choice. The only airco in the duplex-room was right in front of the bed. So you had the choice of switching on and getting ice-cold air directly (no option to control temperature, fan, ..) in your face whole night or switching off and enjoy the heat as no fan avaliable. A bit strange place to put the aico given the size of the room.
And then there were the monkeys... Very funny in the evening... not so funny in the early morning (around 5.30) when they were playing on the roof.
Very strange that a hotel this size.... was so empty. Two times we had diner (between 20.00 and 20.30) and we were the only guests. Nobody touched the food yet, nobody was there, only us.
Some of the food was cold although kept in very modern warm-keeping equipment.
The pool was the same ... nobody but us. Strange for such a big place where all rooms where fully booked (according to the reception when we asked why we could not get the lake-view)
some of the staff was friendly, others were not so.
We got to pay the price of the booked lake-view because ' it was booked via booking' even dough we got a room with no view... 32 euro difference in price/night. no negotiation was possible.
- Lisa (10/5): Lovely room and view - Spectacular views over the lake. The room was very spacious and having monkeys on the roof just added to the fun. Only being there one night. We did not get to sample everything on offer
- Tracy (1/5): Absolutely awful - The best part about the hotel was leaving.
This is first hotel review ever where I rated a hotel
so low. The room had zero view, my view was a concrete wall where the pool was. The room was dark and dungeon like.
Absolutely basic.
The bath had more bugs in it then I could count, was I going to clean it… no
Could I have called reception and asked someone to clean it no… no phones in room.
Also no room service
The beds were 2 singles pushed together and the sheet didn’t even fit properly
I was sent a waiter to my room so I could order food as I’ve a torn knee ligaments and struggle walking far. I ordered 5 drinks so I had drinks overnight etc.
When delivered they asked if I wanted bottles open I said no I would do it. However they removed all lids. Meaning all were open and flat by the time I drank them.
The next issue was guest noise
I had a group of tourists doing TikTok videos outside my room at 5:30 am
Could I have complained no… remember no phone and I’m struggling with walking.
Check out, the rooms are up and down slopes, I can’t call reception so how do I get my case to reception.
The huge issue is lack of English speaking staff. From management down to waiters.
It’s not a hotel suitable for western guests.
Certainly not breakfast catering to vegetarians
I could go on, but you get the gist.
- Tom (6/5): Lovely place and setting but could be made much better - The pool was nice, the pool table was a fun addition and the setting was lovely The staff seemed slightly unnattentive at times compared with other hotels on our trip. Food was expensive for what it was. The hotel was also very quiet at the time so not much atmosphere at dinner
- Suhasini (4/5): Run down hotel - Good location Service. We booked a twin room. On checking was told the hotel did not have twin rooms. Their idea of twin room is two single beds together. No space in the room to take it apart. Very disappointed
- David (10/5): Great value for money, hope to be back! Would highly recommend ! - Superb location , fabulous staff, great food Bathroom very large, but needed a grab bar and somewhere to put your soap etc
- Harkamal (10/5): Exceptional -
- Debbie (8/5): A beautiful place to stay for a few days while visiting local attractions. visiting local attractions - The style and cleanliness were good. The inside/outside bathroom was novel. Comfortable bed. The reception area and gardens are stunning. A combination of the polished wood floor and rug caused a slip and injured head. Staff were quick to respond, removing the rug and providing first aid. The dining area is open-plan and therefore noisy when
Busy. WiFi is limited to reception area. There’s no other facilities within walking distance but good base for reaching Polonnawurra and other historical landmarks - we had a driver with us and his accommodation was free. Insufficient sunloungers - but many without cushions. Jacuzzi needs more regular cleaning and instructions on use. Not many
Veggie options on the menu compared to other places.
- Denise (9/5): Superb -
- Ruvina (7/5): Good -
- Karan (7/5): It was a good experience but a lot of things can be improved. - It is a Lake Front property with 2 small pools.
45-50mins away from Sigiriya by Tuk tuk or car. The hotel was kind enough to arrange a trust worthy tuk tuk from their partners and it was economical yet good service. They have jacuzzi in the bathrooms.
Breakfast buffet and dinner buffet is value for money but the food options on the whole are very limited. They did pack up a hearty breakfast as we had to leave for Colombo early morning. There is no wifi or cellular reception in any part of the hotel apart from the main lobby! So you see all the guests thronging the lobby for wifi and cellular connection.
The rooms do not have phones to call the reception got service and the cell phones don’t work. So you technically have to walk to the lobby every time or find someone to get you what you want.
They give 2 bottles of 500ml water per day per room and anything beyond is chargeable for guests.
The staff is usually over worked as there is a lot of check-ins and check-outs.
The rooms are not lake facing… you can’t really see the lake from any room.
The room we were in had an open washroom style basically like a studio washroom in the backyard of the room and it was raining and the whole area was continuously wet. We dont like our WC area to be always wet so that was a big turn off for us.
- Liviu (1/5): Beware of thieves - Nothing Lack of professionalism. First, they tried to steal my card details by sending a trojan link, asking me to fill again the details of my card (message sent through Booking.com messaging system, so no external communication to blame, message came straight from the hotel). Booking.com has assured me that they communicated with the hotel and I will have no problem with the reservation, no need for preauthorizations. Much to my unpleasant surprise, on the day of arrival, when our local driver called to verify directions, the informed us that they cancelled the reservation “because they could not preauthorize the card” (this is because of hotel POS limitations). So I was left with two small children, aged 4 and 6 in the middle of Sri Lanka, on 23rd of December, to seek on my own a solution, as both numbers (local and UK) indicated for Customer Service of Booking.com were not working.
- Sheena (9/5): Would be happy to stay again. Fantastic senior management aim to make this place even better - Highly recommend the rooms with the indoor / outdoor bathroom. This makes this hotel unique and something you will remember a long time as being unusual and gigantic. We chose this hotel as a excellent best option whilst visiting the nearby Polunnaruwa Ancient Ruins sites. Staff are undergoing English lessons and management are aware of this so is part of their training. However, years ago that was part of the magic of travelling overseas and communicating with locals. The Sri Lankan culture especially in the more remote country areas provides a softer and more kinder staff person. This is not the hotels fault but unfortunately we got caught with the hacking scam on the Booking.com website by responding to a message on the website platform asking for authorization of our credit card even when we correctly logged on to the site using our password and the correct website. I do not know why Booking.com are not warning customers this has been happening for 5 months when they could simply install a pop up message advising users not to provide details via the message interface.
- Pia (8/5): Very good -
- Hridesh (7/5): Good -
- Márta (10/5): Exceptional - The hotel manager was really helpful. The hotel is wonderful and unique.
- Peter (10/5): Fabulous location- close to Kadulla National Park. - The location was fabulous infront of the lake.
All the staff were exceptional- particularly the young man at reception who welcomed us and looked after us really well…. and he was still in training. What a star!
The food, swimming pool and service was excellent! Thank you to all the staff for your hospitality and kindness. None
- Markus (10/5): Exceptional - The hotel has an amazing pool surrounded by nature and a very good view of the Lake.
We had two times the dinner and breakfast, which was very tasty.
The staff was also very friendly and did a good job.
The best thing at our visit was the „monkey menace“ in the evening and in the morning. You should find out by yourself:) -
- Oriol (5/5): Nice setting, but lots to improve. - The setting of the hotel is beautiful. The views on the lake were the best part. The staff were very friendly and kind-hearted. Both the pool and the jacuzzi were unusable. They were green and dirty, and most definitely not 5 star standard. Outdoor areas like tables and windows unkept.
Although staff were very friendly, it was clear to us that they lack hospitality training. They were unable to provide information regarding the area and activities.
We found it difficult to locate staff when we needed them.
For a 5 star hotel, we would expect wifi in the room, and not only the public areas.
- Beatrice (10/5): Exceptional - This hotel is amazing! Very big and comfortable room. Food also very good! We really enjoyed our stay
- Merlin (7/5): Good -
- Or (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kalana (8/5): Very good -
- Ana (10/5): Exceptional - friendly staff, amazing facilities nothing
- Chandrasiri (5/5): Passable -
- Irene (5/5): Not good for value-money - The surrounding, facilities. Breakfast, customer service, some of the areas of the rooms are not well looked after.
- Dalibor (8/5): Very good - Rooms with lake view are beautiful. Staff is very nice and helpful. They are also able to prepare gluten free diet meals for you. Be aware that only management is able to speak English and always confirm with them.
- Rebecca (7/5): Good -
- Jeremy (9/5): Beautiful location, stunning grounds, great pool, helpful staff - now is the time to go! - location is wonderful by lake - plenty of places to sit around pool and in beautiful garden leading to lake views and on terrace by restaurant (choice of sun or shade everywhere) - staff super helpful and friendly especially pool attendant and restaurant manager - great for us, but sad for hotel, we were one of only two couples on second night in this 80 room hotel - bungalow room was very elegant with delightful open air bathroom (although nowhere to sit outside) - this would be a great time to visit!!!!!! towels at pool were a bit old and tatty - slightly strange design sun loungers - monkeys that stole a tile from our game and were very bold at stealing drinks - but we are in their territory - so that’s just something to be aware of!
- Prashantha (8/5): Very good -
- David (10/5): This is an underrated gem of a hotel! Would highly recommend this. - This is a gem! it’s architecturally interesting, beautifully designed with glorious views. The chalets were comfortable, had marvellous inside/outside bathrooms and were tastefully furnished. The staff were attentive and welcoming and food was delicious. it seemed such a shame this place isn’t fully booked - as it deserves to be
