Guest Reviews
- Shelley (7/5): Friendly service nice cosy pub delicious food and quite busy. All in all a nice stay. - The hosts were lovely and helpful from the start. The food was delicious and the room
Was just what we needed. The noise. Although when you book a room above a busy pub it’s to be expected. Maybe the room is more suited for one person it was small but we were only there for one night so it did all it should have.
- Nigel (10/5): Staff and accommodation were excellent - Breakfast was excellent.
Location was very good next to the train station
- Robert (9/5): Superb - Hosts friendly and very helpful . Took my case and medical box up the flight of stairs to our room. Traffic noise on A487 passing through.
- Louise (6/5): Pleasant - Location was good.
Thai restaurant next door but never went in. Very noisy traffic outside property and above bar!
Couldn't really open window when hot and stuffy because of the noise.
Also above bar so very rowdy
- Steve_me (8/5): A nice old inn. - A clean, comfortable room in a nice old inn. Good value Thai restaurant for evening meals. Location satisfactory, handy for the station. Steep, narrow stairs (it’s a very old building). No breakfast.
- Miranda (8/5): Very good - Host provided a fan heater for extra warmth
- David (2/5): If it had been more than two nights we would have found alternative accomadation. - The location was good for us as we were visiting our Granddaughter who's University Accommodations was 10 minutes away. No Breakfast, Only Tai food in restaurant, The room floor was uneven so the bed sloped and we were constantly resetting so little sleep.
The room was only accessible via very steep staircase and my wife has mobility problems, The radiator in the bathroom didn't work and the radiator in the bedroom shut down over night despite the room being quite cold.
- Andrew (9/5): Superb - Great location and handy for the train station.
Great pub and restaurant Nothing to dislike
- Joanx (7/5): Pleasant place to stay overnight when visiting people nearby who can't put us up. - Good Thai evening meal, quite soft foam mattress was comfortable enough, good shower & space for toiletries in the shower room and friendly, helpful staff made our stay pleasant. Location is handy for an overnight break, but with no grounds to speak of, and being right on the main road, it wouldn't be so good for a holiday itself. The big Spar shop is a couple of hundred yards or so walk away and the inn has its own parking round the back. They have a restaurant but don't bother to offer any breakfast! Only one bedside unit, sloping floor in very small bedroom. Doors were still locked at 3pm when I wanted to check in, and no-one answered the phone when I then called, but someone did then go & open up at the back to let us in. Steep narrow staircase up to the rooms would be difficult for anyone with limited mobility (we 70+ year olds just managed). Only Thai food in the evenings (carvery on Sundays only).
- Paul (7/5): Good -
- Andrew (9/5): Good value place with friendly staff - Easy to find good parking No remote for tv but I didn’t ask the owner for one which I could have done
- Paul (8/5): Very good - Location great for what I needed (eg near Bow Street station) I stayed Sunday and Monday night, the pub is closed Mon/Tues - no breakfast or drinks available but that is fine if you bring your own.
- Alvaro (1/5): They will scam you - The place is shabby, but during university graduation times it was the only thing there was to reserve. I soon learned why. With the excuse that I have paid through Booking, the owner does not issue you the proper invoice in order to evade taxes.
- Ruth (8/5): Good value for money. - Good price, nice restaurant. Friendly staff.
- Charlotte (10/5): A very comfortable stay. - Great location, relaxed atmosphere, very comfortable room, spotlessly clean. Exactly as I had hoped for, and considerably better than anything of similar price available in nearby Aberystwyth. A restock of coffee sachets and toilet paper would have been nice.
- Wood (5/5): DISAPPOINTING, WITH NO BREAKFAST AVAILABLE AND ONLY THAI FOOD. NOT PARTICULARLY GOOD FOR OLDER POE - CONVENIENT LOCATION. NO BREAKFAST AVAILABLE, WHICH WE WERE NOT AWARE OF WHEN BOOKING.
- Alun (5/5): Passable - Reasonably spacious room with reasonable facilities. Location is OK. Shower room is OK. Convenient for train station to Aberystwyth. Nothing that a bit of interest and effort couldn't cure. Environment round the property is very run down and disheveled. Back of the property could be a reasonably pleasant beer terrace with a bit of effort. Bedding comes across as cheap though it was clean. Room is reasonably spacious, but quite scruffy looking. There's coffee and tea makings but no biscuits. None of these are show stoppers individually. But taken as a whole, whilst price is not high; when compared to other accommodation on this trip (for which I've paid the same or less), like Dunroaming Cabin in Pendine or Manor Hotel, Crickhowell the quality at the Welsh Black does not seem great value for money. The Thai restaurant on the property gets great reviews. Maybe that's the main focus of the owners, which is fair enough but won't attract good reviews on booking sites.
- Bryan (8/5): Very good - Rooms recently decorated.
Thai food very good.
Accomodating and friendly staff
Good parking. Some rooms suffered from traffic noise
The garden and patio area are scruffy.
Breakfast not available.
- Jeanette (8/5): Very good -
- Shirley (9/5): Lovely pub with pleasant rooms - Lovely clean room in an atmospheric, good old fashioned pub. Staff all very friendly, made us feel welcome. Had a tasty carvery on Sunday lunchtime, the rest of the week is Thai food which smelled delicious would have definitely tested out on a longer visit! Room was comfortable with flat screen TV, we had a twin room, extra blankets supplied for colder nights, altho there is central heating, all very nice and clean That we couldn't stay longer!
- Melanie (8/5): Nice visit would stay again. - Clean, good wifi, comfortable beds, hot shower. Tea coffee etc.
Friendly staff. Good food. A little tired in decoration etc
- Ceri (8/5): Lovely traditional pub, great Thai restaurant - Nice friendly pub and lovely Thai restaurant. Rooms basic but comfy with en-suite shower room A little noisy but did not mar our stay and you do have to expect a certain amount of noise when staying over a traditional style pub
- Andrew (9/5): Great value for money and superb Thai food on site. - Great value for money and superb Thai food on site. Big steps forward on the improvements front and more in the pipeline. Easy access to university, Aberystwyth and other beaches as well as fantastic countryside. Buses and train station within walking distance. Not quite the finished article but work progressed a long way already. New owner deserves the success from efforts.
- Tonia (9/5): Superb -
