Guest Reviews
- Crosby (10/5): -
- Stephen (7/5): Lovely host, shame about the bathroom. - Claire was very friendly and made us feel welcome. Room was decent size, comfortable bed and clean. The bathroom - definitely needs an update. Tiny and made me feel claustrophobic. The toilet made loud noises when using water, dodgy cheap shower and couldn't fill kettle properly in tiny bathroom sink. Not well laid out and lots of hairs.
- DinkyDaisy (9/5): Lovely pub stay! - The pub was fun, easy to find and very comfortable. The staff were lovely and reassured us that they'd shut at 11 so no noise after that! Reasonably priced drinks and just overall a lovely stay! The plumbing does make noises but it's really not that big a deal! Also, currently no food is being served but they have some great recommendations.
- Eric (8/5): A quiet nights rest. - A comfortable night's stay, reasonably close to Alnwick. Pub was closed due to it being early season so we were the only people there. More of a walk into town than anticipated.
- Karen (9/5): - Bed lovely and comfortable staff very friendly and informative ,excellent Sunday lunch There was no offer of breakfast on for our stay, its based at the top of a steep hill so not good for people with mobility issues
- Phil (10/5): Great pub stay. Friendly atmosphere. Staff were very welcoming. Room was nice - Great pub atmosphere. Staff and patrons were very welcoming and friendly. Room was very good. Nothing

- Marie (5/5): OK - Staff were really friendly and helpful No mention the fact that they weren't serving food which was really disappointing, I wouldn't have booked if I'd known that there was no food being served, including breakfast!
- Andrea (8/5): - Cosy country Pub with rooms, friendly staff and locals, good location
- Erica (8/5): Friendly host, clean apartment and cute. The main bed wasn't very comfortable but.the pullout was. - Staff were friendly and accommodated our bag storage for the day. They also linked us with a local cab company. The location is a little bit out of town. There was no food services in place the day we arrived which we were not aware of.
- Mark (8/5): Good value - Everything Nowt
- Andrea (8/5): -
- Donald (8/5): Alnwick is a lovely place for a visit. This place was quiet and had good parking close to town. - Staff were really friendly.
- Florian (7/5): -
- David (8/5): - Friendly staff
- Calum (8/5): Great - Staff were excellent and locals in the pub were great. Good place to stay
- Malcolm (6/5): - Private parking and very quiet slightly away from Alnwick centre. Breakfast was advertised and the google page suggested that food was served at the bar but neither was available when I stayed.
- Derek Rodgerson (9/5): Shepherd's rest - The owner Susan was great and very friendly Unfortunately the place was a bit far out and top of a steep hill,Breakfast was really nice The place was at the top of a steep hill and quiet tiered, There wasn't heating (no radiator) in the en-suite and the room was very tiered and they had an indoor aerial, Never had an indoor aerial since 60s, All these negatives wouldn't stop us from going back cause Sue was a very nice person,Pictures on booking. com showed heating in en-suite but we must of had the one that wasn't shown on the pictures
- Lorett (8/5): Good location, lovely view, helpful staff - The staff were friendly. Check in and out was easy. The water in the shower was very hot and we couldn’t get the cold tap on.
- Rose (9/5): Shepherds Rest - Susan was obliging and helpful.Village atmosphere. Country charm was great. Nothing to complain about.
- Veronica (5/5): - Va bene per soggiorno di 1 notte, non di più. Pulizia fatta in modo approssimativo.
Da migliorare.
- Karen (8/5): -
- Daggett (8/5): My Shepherd Rest stay - This is a lovely old building that must be difficult to maintain. The room was very clean. The staff were brilliant Again, the history of the building meant that the facilities in the room (shower area) were not up to standard.
There was no evening or breakfast food service
- helen (8/5): -
- Andrew (6/5): - no breakfast
- John Paul (5/5): -
- George V (8/5): - The room was clean and nicely decorated. Beds very comfy. Basic facilities, but good value for money. The room felt secure and there was plenty of parking. It is a 15min walk from Alnwick town centre, but it is uphill on the way. Our only suggestion would have been to leave some washing up facilities in the room, and a few extra tea bags or hot chocolates or biscuits in the room would have been a nice touch.
- Rob (10/5): - Warm greeting on arrival. Shown to our room by our host. Were told to just ask if we needed anything. The room was spacious with a good sized en suite. Drank in the bar both nights and had a great time mixing with the locals. All staff were friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay again if we are ever up that way again.
- Matteo Angelo (9/5): - Strutta accogliente, pulita ed in ordine.
- Margaret (9/5): Great walks into town and nice country view, friendly people - Country View
- Rozmin (1/5): I would not recommend a short or a long stay there - Staff were friendly Booking.com stated toiletries would be included which they were not. however, the were very friendly and extremely helpful specially when I showed you that the booking.com states there would be toiletries available.
I have to state that I had requested a quiet room which I repeated when I was shown to the room. I was told it was front facing room but there was minimal traffic and I could shut the window to cut our the noise. Well, the traffic noise did not subside till 1am and started again at around 5.45am. I could not shut the window. The toilet holder was broken the shower hose kept falling down, the bed sheets were rough, I am assuming flannelette or some such. The TV had indoor aerial which meant, the reception was poor. The picture was disrupted every time a car passed. It was impossible to watch anything on the TV.
The room was not worth £81. I came late for me to get a good night’s rest which was impossible.
- Gail (6/5): Pleasant -
- Bailey (8/5): Comfortable with a great atmosphere. - Quite an experience. A very comfortable bed and a huge breakfast. What’s not to like! The Macerator in the toilet was a bit noisy.
- Laura-jane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kay (10/5): Exceptional - Claire was an excellent host. So friendly
The locals made you feel very welcome The hill
- Elaine (6/5): Pleasant - Maybe a refresh would improve the accommodation
- Ian (9/5): Comfortable stay in a conveniently located and cosy pub. - Comfortable stay in a convenient location. Friendly and helpful staff. Satisfying freshly cooked breakfast. Nothing
- Jimmyndee (7/5): Good - Room was lovely. Bathroom bit small but clean . No meals at the inn
- Wayne (6/5): Pleasant -
- Stuart (6/5): Comfortable - Staff very helpful. Nice spot for visiting alnwick and surrounding area
Bed comfortable. Noise from swinging pub sign, needs some wd40.
Bathroom small for us larger people but ok.
Room Slightly dated.
- Pj (8/5): Cheap and cheerful. - Friendly staff , short walk from carpark to room . Pub in ground floor with jovial local folk .Nice room . Noisy plumbing in en suite bathroom .
- Jack (6/5): Pretty basic accommodations and a noisy pub. - Amazingly friendly and kind pub staff. Room right on top of noisy pub. Far away from charming Alnwick. No food available (at all, not even pub snacks) the night I was there. I would not have booked if I had known that. Very basic accommodations, although clean and tidy. All that being said, not cheap either.
- Keith (5/5): Expensive - I was charged a fee of £99 that I wasn’t aware of
- Clare (6/5): Pleasant -
- Golebiewski (9/5): Superb -
- Katrina (1/5): Not worth the money - The staff were friendly and helpful with the window we couldn't shut in the bedroom. The room looked shabby. The room had been "cleaned" could smell bleach, but nothing was really clean. The bathroom was terrible, smelt of sewage, lots of hair everywhere and made a horrible sound everytime you flushed, put the tap on or used the shower. It states breakfast is available, but no one asked if we wanted it. When we checked out it was all locked up and didn't look like breakfast was an option. We wasn't even sure if we were going to stay the night (but we had stuff on in the area)
- Les (10/5): Wonderfully quaint Shepherds Rest - We loved our host Clair, she went above and beyond to make our short stay comfortable. We would absolutely recommend this little pub to anyone wanting a friendly relaxed stay. We weren't notified that meals are not served during the week but our host Claire helped us out enormously 👍
- Warne (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was brilliant. We enjoyed everything
- Jennifer (1/5): Extremely noisy and no way of locking the door. - Nothing The room was the noisiest we have ever stayed in. You could hear absolutely everything. Music, voices, doors slamming every minute or so. It was unbearable. On top of that, the toilet had a macerator which ran every single time the toilet was flushed, every time the tap or shower was run and even when urinating in the toilet! We told the staff that the macerator is broken and the staff said it's always been like that. Clearly the owner is not maintaining their facilities.
The room was directly over the bar and I cannot emphasise how loud it was. Luckily we had a speaker with us - we had to play music loudly until after 11pm to drown it out, when we just wanted to rest as we were really ill.
This was advertised as a B&B - they said they weren't doing dinner and there was no mention of breakfast so I don't think it is a B&B.
We messaged the owner about the noise and they said we should have expected it as it's a pub - but it does not state this in the listing. If they were honest and listed the room for half the price that would have been fair enough, but no.
I had serious safety concerns about the room and would absolutely not have stayed here as a female solo traveller. The room door did not have a key and there was no way of locking it from the inside.
Do not stay here.
- Lynn (7/5): It was adequate - Location and price Kettle needed cleaning and quite noisy
- Michelle (8/5): Very good - Lovely location and very helpful staff. Just the lock on the bathroom door needs fixing, as we couldn't close the door. Everything else was great!
- Hall (6/5): Pleasant - Friendlieness of the staff. The room was cold
- Westwood (8/5): Ambling in Alnwick - Loved the friendly staff and locals and the location was ideal for our stay in the North East. A great genuine old fashioned pub!The bed was comfortable and all the room facilities were fine. There wasn't a rubber safety mat in the bath which made having a shower a bit tricky!
- Vicky (7/5): Good - Friendly host and made us feel very welcome. Food was great. Just a 10 minute walk to the town centre. Good price and room had what we needed for the two nights. When running the taps or flushing the toilet, there was a loud noise which was recurring, not quite sure what it was but it was loud! Couldn't seem to shut the window but not a major issue at all.
- Laura (8/5): Lovely stay - Nice location, easy to find, friendly welcome. Everything was perfect
- Harry (7/5): More a pub than a B&B. Nice location. - Great location on the edge of Alnwick Moor with Morrisons down the road. Landlady very helpful in providing a table, microwave and extra bits of cutlery etc. Nice big room, good views. Comfy bed. Good properly cold fridge. It's just 3 rooms above the pub. Poorly insulated so you get the pub noise, though it stops before 11pm. Not enough hot water sometimes.
- Laura (8/5): Defo re visiting when the weather is better - lovely little pub and b&b - Really enjoyed this stay and the staff was so lovely couldn’t have made me and my friends more welcomed
They cooked a spread for nye and we had a party and they let myself family and friends with children all stay in a little section of the pub and it was lovely for our duration of the stay
My room was cold the first night cos the window wasn’t shut properly but there was heaters and extra covers for us to use and any thing I wanted I’m sure Susan and Claire would have got it for me The rooms are slightly dated but it didn’t stop me enjoying our stay - the building is old so I didn’t expect the ritz
- Laura (8/5): Lovely would defo come and re visit even just the bar as it’s so friendly - The staff first of all were so lovely and it felt like just staying at family home - very accommodating and trusting , they put a spread on for NYE and fireworks and it was lovely, they let us as a group keep the children in till late and also they let us bring our own food in to nibble on as they weren’t serving food so it was perfect for our group of friends to be in a warm bar with room for the kids to be all together and alcohol and soft drinks were served for the adults -
The bed was comfortable we were in the family room and amenities were in for us to be self catering
It wasn’t loud considering bar underneath
Claire the bar staff was so helpful and lovely as well as the other lady but I got on with Claire straight away
Susan had another bar and gave free shots to my boyfriend and his friends while they visited there
I’m looking forward to the summer as I will be back.
Such a friendly pub and b&b will hope the on in the summer but I think if I asked Susan to make me something she would go out the way to do that
Hospitality was lovely I would have loved to have been able to bring my dog but understand it’s a cleaning thing after dogs been in room it can cause allergies and need to get deep cleaned
The room could have had a mini cooker or an airfryer in of some sort
Also I think it could have been a little cleaner but I got used to it been like home from home feel and not so much a clean hotel room
The first night was freezing but I think the cold had got through a window and it wasn’t getting warmer but there was two heaters in the cupboards so I used them and it was fine the next few days - hence why I’m still lying in bed writing
This cos it’s so cosy
I think room is slightly dated but it’s an old building but it is what it is and It wouldn’t stop me from coming back here.
- Marcus (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (5/5): Could of been better - The staff extremely friendly.
Good drinks.
Parking fab.
Nice location. Room was outdated
The pictures of the room weren't like it was. Felt catfished.
Smelt damp in the room.
The sign squeaked all night right outside the window
The person staying opposite was up and down the stairs all night making a racked and smoking directly under our window.
Bathroom absolutely tiny! The shower head kept falling out it's holder. Very noisy macerator loo.
- Erica (7/5): Good - The room was up a short flight of stairs above the bar. It was small but perfectly well appointed. The shower room was small, and while was fine for a short stay would not have been for a longer stay. Everything else was good. The en-suite was very small.
- Ryan (8/5): Very good -
- Harry (3/5): Poor - not a lot over priced
oveu stated
under performed
- Kc (9/5): Superb -
- Kim (8/5): good - staff excellent could do more for us nothing
- Janet (4/5): Disappointing - Not a lot No breakfast, wedding on the Saturday with loud music till 11ish. After a day of sightseeing just wanted a quiet evening which we didn't get. Stayed in our room. If we had known about the wedding we wouldn't have booked.
- Darran (8/5): Very good -
- Rosa (6/5): Pleasant - the room was basic but clean and comfortable. staff were lovely not enough tea/coffee in the room, so we had to keep asking for top up. not really a big gripe!
- Suny (7/5): Good - Staff memeber was amazing, so freindly and accomodating, and made us feel very welcome. Amazing sunset view, great food with lovley seating area. Its abit noisy during the night, the bath tub jet didnt work, the toaster made the electrics of the pub trip in the morning, could have just done with some basic work in the family room. The double room was lovley.
- Michael (5/5): Passable -
- Carole (7/5): A very handy location for a one night stay and convenient for central Alnwick - Evening meal excellent
- Colin (8/5): Very good -
- Edward (9/5): Superb -
- Kara (9/5): Superb -
- Natasha (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely location just on the outskirts of the village, not far to walk either! Nice and easy to check in, beautiful little room and incredibly comfy. Would definitely visit again!
- Surtees (8/5): Very good -
- Nicolas (6/5): Pleasant - Very close to Alnwick Castle Very expensive for what it was
Small room, complicated to have food
Breakfast price was higher than announced on Booking site
- Katie (4/5): It was okay the bedroom looked clean apart from - Breakfast was delicious and location was brilliant for where we wanted to visit. Staff were friendly. The bathroom was extremely disappointing - there was black mould on the wall and all around the shower door. There was a hole in the wall filled with loo roll. It had had a basic clean the skirting boards and dado rail were all dusty. The bathroom door had dirty finger prints on it. I did actually take some photos of these problems as I feel they need to be addressed. The silicone used around the tiles was all messy like it had been quickly done with no care. The shower base looked disgusting on the outside. Most of these things could be rectified easily with some mould remover spray and some one who will take their time and care. It needs bringing into the 21st century however, I do understand that times are difficult but it wouldn’t take much for a quick spruce up. The blind and windowsill were dirty in the bedroom also. Just some care and attention needed like I said.
- Sara (5/5): Terrible - Looked really rough from the outside It looked scruffy it wasnt clean there was stains in the toilet hairs on the sink in the bathroom and a big hole in the bath room wall
- Lynne (8/5): Very good -
- Kostadin (7/5): Good -
- Anita (9/5): Superb - Great location near to Alnwick. Nice welcome after a long drive - nice to have food available on site and somewhere to relax and have a drink. Staff were very helpful and accommodating.
- Yemima (3/5): Poor -
- Steven (4/5): Not good - No breakfast Breakfast
- Ken (4/5): The bed was comfortable. - Location No heat in the room as the radiator was turned off. The main problem was the noise from the bar. The shouting and screaming was very loud in the room and this raucousness stopped me from even considering having the bar meal I had hoped for.
- Christine (4/5): what we were looking for was just a good bed where we could sleep and rest. This was not the case. Paying £122 for this - Clean sheets and towels.
Easy to find.
Calm. Mattresses were so old you’d sink in them…not comfortable at all.
The bed bases were also old they’d creaked badly each time you moved… impossible to sleep.
The flooring was also creaky.
No soap or shampoo in the bathroom except for a near empty hand soap bottle.
It was a bad night. We never experienced anything like that before.
- Claxton (7/5): Good - Staff where great Bathroom was not great
- Kirsty (7/5): Good -
- Ken (6/5): Overall, no complaints. - Some would say it was shabby, but the bed was comfy and the breakfast was good.
Staff were friendly and helpful. As I.say, the rooms were in need of a spruce up.
- Kirsten (7/5): okay but quite a trek too the town -
- Brian (8/5): Very good -
- Fiona (10/5): Exceptional -
- Atkins (7/5): Good -
- Andrew (7/5): Good - A nice room but it was far out of town up a steep hill! There seemed to be little life to the pub and it was deserted in the morning. It was expensive for what you got and I only stayed there because there was nothing available cheaper or closer to town on a Saturday.
- Kevin (10/5): Perfect location for a quick visit, helpful and friendly staff and everything we needed. - Really friendly place. The staff were helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Only a short walk into the town and the facilities were prefect for us. I can’t say that there was anything we didn’t like, but you get what you pay for. This place is great value, but don’t expect the Ritz
- Chris (7/5): Pleasant stay. - There was plenty of space. Nice staff. Good location. My parents who had twin beds felt that the mattress wasn’t very comfortable due to springs. The breakfast was a bit over done. Showers hot water wasn’t consistent.
