Guest Reviews
- Mike (6/5): Good value pub accommodation. - The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The food was very good, the restaurant was busy with locals in the evening. The room was tired, it was located above the bar and on the road through the village - hence there was a limited amount of noise, but not enough to keep us awake. The shower was very small.
- Antoon (8/5): -
- David (7/5): - Comfortable room and good food and drink.
- ben (10/5): - Really great place for an overnight stay for my dad and myself whilst cycling on the ridgeway. Staff went above and beyond to accommodate us. Great food and great staff, including George the dog!
- Susan (8/5): Enjoyable stay - Good location in the village appreciated by the locals. Various dining areas including a large beer garden behind. Good decor throughout. The bedroom was roomy, well presented and the bed comfortable. A good night sleep after a long day walking.
The pub was busy in the evening with plenty of people enjoying the food. A good menu and friendly staff. Lack of breakfast menu. The only thing on offer was Full English.
- Ciera (10/5): -
- susan (10/5): Relaxing and evening meal was excellent - Very clean and hosts really accommodating with any requests will definitely stay again
- Roger (8/5): First class overnight stay in a lovely and convenient location - I was pleased to be able to book somewhere in the area with food and ale on offer on a Sunday night (not least when other places around had failed to do so in the past), and The Swan delivered both very well indeed! Good food, good ale, and smashing cheerful staff. Those compliments extend to the next morning too, when I enjoyed a 'work morning' online there. It's most definitely on my list of "good places to stay in in future"! I hope to do so I'm struggling to find things to criticise! Perhaps the breakfast could have had a 'help yourself' buffet-style offering for supplementary basics (fruit juice, a cereal bowl?) as well as the cooked food menu (which was grand!) ... maybe they did and I missed them!
- Mark (8/5): Nice room, superb food and wonderful staff - Nice room . Superb food and great staff Bit noisy until 12.30am from bar below
- Maria (8/5): -
- Helen (8/5): Very comfortable stay in stylish surroundings - Very comfortable room, especially the bed. Stylishly furnished throughout the property and lovely atmosphere. Breakfast was very good. They forgot to put towels in the room apart from just the one bath towel, but it wasn't a disaster.

- Helen (8/5): Comfortable stay in lovely location. - Room was stylishly well furnished and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was very good. Great location. The breakfast was advertised at £10 on both the hotel website and Booking.com but the landlord said it had gone up to £15, a 50% increase?
- Deborah (8/5): Lovely country location - very pleasant owner and staff. Would recommend and stay again. - We didn’t have any food as it was just an overnight stay. We were offered a free coffee on arrival, which was a nice touch, and much appreciated after a long day of visiting and travel. Room was pleasant, and the bed extremely comfortable. Bathroom was cold and we didn’t see where we could adjust the heating on the towel rail.

- Micah (8/5): - Nice location in the countryside, the room was clean and comfortable. The staff was super friendly! Shower was on the small side
- Guest (10/5): -
- Simon (8/5): Great value, food was excellent, friendly and helpful staff. - Great value room, excellent food (we had fillet steak, which was perfectly cooked), great value wine - I recommend the Primitivo) and Ken looked after us in the morning. What a star he was. Plus George the dog. Nothing
- Mark (5/5): Room ok and great food but ruined by people voices and loud music from the bar until 1am! - Room ok very spacious and great food Noise from the bar downstairs peoples voices and loud music until 1 am! . Ok I know it is a pub and expert noise until about 11 but not until 1am on a Tuesday night!. Expect to be able to get to sleep before this time in the week . It sure ruined the stay and would not recommend staying there for this reason but great food.
- Pete (9/5): Amazing value for money - The staff were fantastic, welcoming, friendly and very helpful. The room was clean and comfortable and the meals were great tasting and good value.Highly recommend the hotel.
- Tom (9/5): - Very comfy bed
Good water pressure in the shower
- Islander (10/5): Overall, we had a great stay—comfortable bed, clean bathroom, and friendly staff made it a relaxing - The room was fantastic—the bed was massive and extremely comfortable with high-quality bedding. The bathroom felt luxurious, with a spacious layout, excellent lighting, and a powerful rainfall shower. Everything was spotless and well-designed. A really relaxing experience from start to finish. None

- MARY (8/5): Friendly staff. Comfortable room. - Very friendly helpful staff. Comfortable room. Full English breakfast delicious. Evening meal in the restaurant very good and reasonably priced. Being a big open plan bar and restaurant with stone floor with several entrances, it was a bit cold in the restaurant (January!) It didnt help that I had ice cream for dessert!!!. However we had a seat by the log burner in the bar.
- Harriet (9/5): - Friendly staff, good food, great base to explore beautiful countryside
- Andy (7/5): - The accommodation is fine. beds are comfy and the en-suite nice, but a little tight on shower space no fans, the rooms were so hot -gut it was the hottest day of the year!
- Chris (6/5): A rural pub for the warmer weather, in need of some modernisation - This traditional/old-fashioned large pub with rooms in Compton had atmosphere, and was kept very clean and tidy although it can clearly do with some modernisation. The food we had was excellent (a deliciously-cooked breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast on New Year's Day morning!). Considering it was New Year's Eve and Day and the staff were clearly very busy, everyone was very polite and pleasant. Our two bathrooms were completely unheated and cold (it was mid-Winter) with no radiators (or visible heat sources) in them at all. The towel rails appeared to be capable of throwing out some heat once-upon-a-time, but it was impossible to find any switch or knob to turn them on, and therefore they remained stone cold. One of our two bedrooms was unheated (the radiator was turned off) when we arrived (at 5pm on Dec 31st), but once we turned up the radiator controls they became cosy and warm. The stairs and the corridor to our rooms were unheated too, until we turned the corridor radiator on ourselves. We found it very difficult to get any hot water at all in our bathrooms' sinks (we didn't have the confidence to run any baths, or to take showers), even after we had 'let the hot taps run' for a long time (thus wasting a lot of (cold) water, which was a shame because we assume the water supply to the pub was metered). We assume that the energy bill for the pub must have increased considerably this year which is why there were shut-off radiators and very little heat in the upstairs rooms (until the bedroom radiators were turned on fully), a shame.
- Fiona (8/5): Nice spot to stay when visiting friends. Room a bit chilly, and bathroom needs more heat. - I would have expected an inclusive breakfast at this price. Room fine nice layout but cold Heat insufficient

Thank you 👍
I’ll definitely stay again

- FrankReviews (8/5): - Very friendly welcome, clean room that functioned well and a good spot for accessing the Thames Valley. Everything was fine. The pub below was busy and looked like it might have noise through to the rooms but it didn't.
- Barry (7/5): Comfortable overnight stop in friendly pub. - The Swan is located in the main street of Compton but traffic noise was not a problem in this quite village. Room was comfortable, with an effective radiator to warm the room on a very cold night, and bathroom adequate (shower small but OK, although took a long while for warm water to come through in the morning). Bed and pillows comfortable.
Bar area OK, had an excellent pint of draught Timothy Taylor Landlord too. Food in restaurant good value - freshly cooked and large portion. All staff cheerful and friendly. Surprisingly, breakfast serving started at 8am which was too late for us. Expected at latest a 7:30am start to cater for anyone staying overnight to get to work by 9am.
- James (10/5): A homw from home - Great Atmosphere, great food & great staff! Highly recommend.
Very welcoming
- Steve (9/5): Fab stay - Brilliant accommodation with great food in the bar Little noisy in the bedroom from the pub downstairs
- Richard (8/5): - Location was great for the ridgeway - detour not too far, and on quiet paths. Quite expensive.
- Tracey (8/5): - Lovely warm welcome, nothing is too much trouble. Excellent breakfast 👌.

Plenty of parking. There was nothing to complain about from us
- Chris (8/5): Good stay for work. - Friendly staff, really comfy bed, good beer and really good food Breakfast started at 8 so i missed out as I needed to be out by 7.30
- Louise (10/5): Great accommodation with lovely hosts. Good value for money. - 2 night B&B stay for a friend's wedding nearby. The room was spacious with everything we needed. Very comfortable beds with good pillows. Great private bathroom, nice fluffy towels, and complimentary toiletries.Tea/coffee facilities provided.
We had breakfast served in the pub both mornings of our stay. Lovely full English breakfast with toast, tea/coffee and a glass of fresh juice.
Owner Ken and staff member Kelly made us very welcome. Thank you for a great stay.
- terry (8/5): - The staff in the bar and restaurant were excellent and attentive, and Oscar was very helpful The room and bar area
- Ian (6/5): Nothing further to add. - Location. Sadly with buildings such as this, old, there are always stairs to climb, was problematic for my wife who has issues with her hip. Garden area was untidy, needed some attention, perhaps it was due to the number of people enjoying the sunshine, in which case staff should have paid more attention to it by cleaning up, removing glasses, rubbish etc.
- David (4/5): -
- Richard (10/5): Lovely, comfortable and friendly - The Swan is a lot better than you would expect from a good pub with rooms. The bedrooms and en suite bathrooms are of a very high standard and a good size, equivalent to a boutique hotel. But in other respects the Swan has the personal, friendly family run feel that you get from a small rural establishment. Anything we asked for we got. I asked for a glass of tap water at closing time and was given two bottles of chilled mineral water, for no charge. The food is good too, especially the breakfasts, and the whole is good value for money. I would like to have seen a local ale for sale, but the Landlord told me that his regulars won't drink anything other than Timothy Taylor Landlord. But I'm being very picky here.

- Tracey (10/5): Booked to return says it all and breakfast was 100% - Excellent service and friendly booked to go back x The down to earth friendly staff home from home even got coffee to room from Ken the owner and offered to taxi us about if needed.
- John (4/5): Good room, poor experience. - The breakfast was a huge fry. I was offered juice as well. The room was spot on. Comfortable and clean. I was initially given the key to a room which had not been cleaned. The room was changed immediately and it had just been an error but it sort of set the scene of first impressions. I booked specifically because this pub does food, but I was told there was none that night. The landlord kindly offered a sandwich and chips free of charge and did check that I was happy with that. Breakfast: I sat down and it was placed in front of me almost immediately. I wasn't asked if that was what I wanted, but it was a huge plateful. No question of allergies or if I was vegetarian, which I'm not, but it was an odd experience. A long black hair was in the tomato. It was swimming in beans which I hate and hadn't had the chance to ask them to leave these to one side. The pub dog appeared and sat right beside me throughout the meal. The landlord told me it was a nuisance and that it barked at everyone, but did nothing to remove the bloody thing. Across the room I could see four dark lumps on the wooden floor. I hope it was not what I suspect it was. Then I was given a milky coffee, again, unasked for. I drink mine black and it was changed immediately without any problem. To be fair, I should have pointed out the hair, but I decided to leave asap, given the yappy dog which wouldn't stop barking. The owner was keen to please in all respects, but why not remove the aggressive dog? Even from a hygiene point of view. Anyway, I didn't complain at the time and I probably should have. But my appetite had disappeared and I just left. Amusing to see that a previous reviewer thought the dog was brilliant!!
- Helena (5/5): Passable - Welcoming atmosphere No hot water for the shower and not asked how how stay had been.
Breakfast not attractive
- Nick (9/5): Superb -
- William (9/5): Superb -
- Christopher (9/5): Great stay at Swan Compton. - Central in the village and only 400m away from the village hall where we were going. Great cooked breakfast. Nothing to complain about.
- Leonardo (10/5): Amazing place to stay or even just go for a day out and eat the great food there. - Evening meal was amazing, the breakfast was just as nice, the twin room we had was very big, clean and really nice. we will definately be going back. The Landlord was great and friendly and so were the rest of the staff. N/A
- Laura (10/5): Gorgeous country pub stay, with friendly landlord and delicious dinner - Lovely owners, large comfortable room and the food was delish
- Barbara (1/5): Utterly disappointing - The beds were comfortable and the room was clean and reasonably well equipped. When we arrived at 5pm there was extremely loud music playing, both outside and in, which continued without a break until well after midnight. The staff seemed not to be expecting us, and tried to charge us £110, rather than the £81 on the confirmation form. The loud music and raucous atmosphere meant we had to go elsewhere for a meal and were unable to get any sleep until after the music stopped and the bar customers left. I appreciate there was a local celebration going on, but feel it was completely inappropriate to let bedrooms on a night when guests were be unable to get any rest for most of the duration of their stay. It absolutely was not a 4* star experience. If I had been aware of the above I would not have booked a room at this venue.
- Christopher (8/5): Very good -
- Steve (10/5): Clean and friendly pub with very comfortable rooms. - Clean and friendly Nothing really
