Guest Reviews
- Anna (10/5): Lovely stay and would recommend - It’s a lovely little old pub / b&b with a lot of history the staff offed a warm welcome couldn’t ask for more there walked you up to your room and showed you how it all work to settle u in just everything about this place was 10 out of 10 and would defo recommend to any one Nothing
- Gordon (1/5): This property is worse than a bunkhouse. Room was dyer and mattressso old the springs appeared broken not good when doin - Good parking Property was dirty, room was very tired, mattress old and very uncomfortable. Breakfast was awful
- Calvin (8/5): - The breakfast was lovely The inside door was locked, so had to go around the pub in the pouring rain to go for breakfast. It wasn't as clean as when we stayed the last time. Not that we were there to watch tv. But the signal wasn't very good and no wifi. Other than that it was pleasant 778

- Sandra (7/5): - Ambiance, uniek gebouw!
Locatie van de overnachtingsplek t.o.v. de locatie van de conferentie WiFi-voorziening
Verwarming in de kamer die ik had was defect
- Jane (6/5): Welcoming and friendly, but room and cleanliness needs attention! - The location and friendliness of staff.
Like the age and history of the building. Certain areas leading to the room were quite dirty and un loved.
The bed was comfy, but the pillows we felt had an odour … not very nice at all. There were holes in the bathroom wall where maybe a shelf once was… so no where to put things.
Perhaps the room needs decorating too!
- Trevor (3/5): We shall have to be more careful in picking B&B's in future. - We chose a bad night to stay. Being Halloween (31/10) some places go a long way to celebrate the event to bring in custom, and Ye Olde Black Cross was certainly one. There were kids, and later adults, discos on that night. Not what we hoped for, but there was a lot of custom and many were obviously enjoying the events. We had drinks in the pub but astonishingly there were no cask beers. Previously we had tried to book a meal in the pub, but had been told (despite what we read on websites) that they did not serve food. When we got there we were grateful that we had had to book to eat elsewhere. The room was not as clean as we had been led to expect from reviews. The accommodation appeared rather run-down in general. What did we think of the breakfast? Well we had paid for it but we didn't have it. We had asked for breakfast at 9am but the link-door to the pub interior remained locked at that time and we could not get in. We tried to make calls but got no answer. We managed to speak to a staff member who happened to be outside and he made a call to the manager. Finally someone (from upstairs in the pub) opened the link door at 9:30 in preparation to make breakfast. The indoors had not been cleaned since the previous night - we were invited to make our own tea/coffee but there were no cups, and the table was stained. We decided to leave, and I went into the kitchen to let the staff member know. What I saw there - plates left with half-eaten food on them - reinforced our desire not to stay longer.

- Maria (10/5): Visiting friends & family. Great & will book again - Spotless rooms. Even on main road there wasn’t much noise. Used to be regulars when lived in Bromsgrove & the pub itself is run very well too
Near all eateries and recommend Flavours Indian. Easy walk to high street Nothing
- Nell (8/5): -
- Steven (8/5): A very quirky place dating back to 1640. If you want a traditional old pub accommodation, then this is the place to stay - Its location and staff.
The staff were not just friendly, they were exceptionally helpful.
- Nell (8/5): -
- Stephen (10/5): Good night out - Clean comfy and friendly staff
- nigel (10/5): Really nice place helpful staff - Comfortable room friendly staff
- Paul (5/5): - The pub and the location We paid for breakfast at 8am and the pub was in darkness no one on site very dissapointing

- Stephen (10/5): - Nice rooms and friendly staff .
Will stop here again .
- cheryl (9/5): - Staff helpfully.basic but very relaxed clean and comfortable
- Allison (4/5): Basic. - It’s in a lovely pub which is pretty central to the town centre and close to the M5 I chose this venue as they offered evening meals but on arrival kitchen was being refurbished. Offered breakfast but no menu to make an informed choice. Chef overslept so another couple didn’t even get their breakfast. Rooms lack any personality.
- Katrina (5/5): Maybe being told the kitchen is out of action - The room was ok.very clean, ensuite was clean. The shower was ok
We were shown to our room, and we were giving a code and tag to let ourselves in and out of the property
We were asked what we would like for breakfast and what time?
Full English and 08.00.
When we parked in their security car park, we got out of the car and could smell indian ( yum yum)
So when we went in the pub we said " where is the Indian that we can smell"?
" oh its next door"
Great, so we had that for our dinner, lovely food.well worth a try.
We went to bed and set alarm for 07.30,
When we went downstairs, the whole pub was locked up, all curtains were closed, and it was dark inside when we tried looking through the windows, we rang the doorbell a few times and got no reply.
We went back up to our room, and I knocked on the door to the room next to us,
I asked them if they were having breakfast they said yes at 09.00,
We told them no one was about, ours was booked for 08.00 and it's now 08.20 and still no breakfast.
The lady told me she asked if she could have a meal the night before and was told " no cos we having it re done up" so they ended up in the Indian next door! Before being told about the kitchen refurbishment the pub charged them £18 for breakfast in the morning.
We left at 08.30, still no one about so we put the key and fob through front door letterbox,
Just as hubby was getting back into the car, one of the barmen came walking up towards pub, he said " i slept through the alarm, and it's made me rather late,"
I've had no apology via email , which they could have done as its been 11 hrs since leaving there. Paying for B and B and only getting half of what we paid for,
Apart from that, it was a nice stay
- Lewis-Miller (8/5): - Staff friendly and excellent breakfast provided by the owner (we think). The venue has plenty of character in the main bar and a rich history. The room we were in was very basic but clean. The mattress was very soft and the room itself could do with brightening up a bit.
- Rogers (9/5): Very pleasant and comfortable stay. - On the surface and taken at face value this place seem a bit low end, compared to a lot of other properties of this type.
This would be a mistake. The staff were very helpful and friendly.
The room was very clean and perfectly adequate. The bed was comfortable and a good night's sleep was had.
Any down side issues relate to the age of the property. "It is a very old building". Every foot step in the bedroom, was a small symphony of creaks and squeaks. If that is an issue for you, don't stay in room one. I found after the initial worrying about disturbing someone else, it just added to the charm of the place. Anything that might need to be improved, would take away the old charm of the place. So don't change.
- Karen (7/5): The room was clean, it’s a budget price point and the place could do with updating, but I think the price reflects this. - Clean room. Excellent value.
- Colin (5/5): -
- Stanley (6/5): Ok apart from the above - Ok Charged £7.65 for 1 pint and a packet of crisps, my motorbike is registered in Germany, may of thought I was a foreigner?
Didn’t notice until I left and checked the phone record.
- John (9/5): Great stay - Fabulous breakfast
- Stephen (3/5): Probably a better pub than hotel! - The breakfast was good, although its components were variable; the first day the kitchen was locked so we had to go elsewhere for breakfast (we were reimbursed), other days we got toast or fried bread or neither!
The staff were very apologetic about the various shortcomings, but should have avoided those by knowing how to run a hotel or B&B. There were only hand towels the first day, and no towel rail. They fixed that.
Thereafter the number and type of towels provided varied and we always had to ask for more.
There was tea and coffee but no milk; we had to ask every day to get some.
Loud music and conversation from the bar reached our room until 1am.
- Lee (10/5): Friendly staff made me feel very welcome, they made sure I had a very pleasant experience. - I had the option of a cooked breakfast, it was very nice. With tea and coffee also made available.
- Heidi (9/5): - Great location 2 mins from town centre
Lovely staff greeted us
Fabulous breakfast Mattress was soft
- Stephen (9/5): All good - Comfortable and clean and good value
- Connie (7/5): Nice guest house in a peaceful town - Breakfast is good, staff are helpful and nice. The guest house is close to the city center, but not to the Bromsgrove station. Whether it's convenient or not, depends on the purpose and transportation.
- John stuart (5/5): Adequate, staff very obliging, but pub interior needed work not very cosy - Breakfast very poor.Choice was very limited eg either cereal or full English breakfast, not both.Toast only with breakfast. No egg with full English!!!
- Phoenixrise (10/5): Nice, clean private room in historic location - I liked the privacy and spaciousness of the room. Check in was easy and staff were helpful. Centrally located. Good breakfast, too. Historic location was lovely.
- Keith (9/5): A quick stop off - Great venue, good prices, does wat it said on the advert, nice breakfast also, near centre of town.
- Irene (9/5): Conveniently close to centre of Bromsgrove, 'historic', very helpful staff, comfortable room -
- lisa (9/5): Overall very pleasant - Staff were excellent, good breakfast Need full length mirror in room
- Nicholas (6/5): - Friendliness & helpfulness of the staff Noise from below until 11.30pm. Meagreness of the breakfast.
- Serhii (10/5): -
- Darren (1/5): - It's the worse place I've ever stayed Stayed in room 2 it's was rotten floor ad cotton bud and hair band 8n toilet only one toilet roll one towel no milk to av a coffee . Electric socket hanging of the wall no mirror in bathroom mattress was so thin could feel the base of the bed they ask what time we wanted breakfast I said 9 so we went down at 8.30 the place was locked we rang the bell no answer so we walk around the building knocking doors.. Then a guy was outside he said the chefs locked the doors I am cooking Yr breakfast but can't get in. So he said go to the cafe and get yrself breakfast and a coffee bring the receipt back and we will pay u. So I came back with receipt and he said gavin will be in touch I phoned the pub to say no one as been in touch. A lady answered and said i will get in touch with my brother and get this sorted. I've checked my bank and nothing as been sorted. I am fuming they did same you can have a free meal but we live 1 hour away as we was at a wedding. I won't be going there again
- Andrew (8/5): Comfortable and affordable - Location No evenjng food available though it wasnt served on the day of our stay
- Cole (9/5): Characterful and cosy stay! - Cosy and charming, very characterful room & pub! Beautiful facilities and furnishings, super comfy bed. It had everything I needed and more! Checking out was confusing as i left before the pub opened so no staff were around and there was no answer when i rang the bell provided.
- Martin (8/5): Very good -
- Martyn (6/5): Pleasant - Close to the motorway and handy for an overnight stop. Very basic and dated. Breakfast was ok but nothing special, nothing overly wrong with the stay just lacking a bit if care and attention.
- Julie (9/5): Superb -
- Lynne (7/5): Good - Cheap, good location, breakfast was nice. Bed (room 3) was not great. Mattress needs replacing or, at the very least, a mattress topper.
- Dave (4/5): Disappointing -
- Brian (10/5): Exceptional - The wine Nothing
- Simon (5/5): Well positioned, good value - Very good value.
Well positioned
Good parking Noisy, bin lorry at 5.15am
Loud cars / bike in the evening
Very basic breakfast
- Dennis (7/5): A very pleasant over night stop. - Good location. Nice pub, very pleasant and helpful staff. Live music on Saturday night, a pleasant bonus for us and finished, just after 10.00 o'clock, which was also good for us. Unfortunately no food, but not a problem. Breakfast between 0700hrs - 0800hrs and having driven up from the South West and with a drive to the North East, the following day, we passed on the breakfast for a lie in.
- Lisa (9/5): We would definitely return - Staff were amazing, so friendly, lovely quirky building, nice rooms, great location. Minor things as mostly our stay was amazing. Would have liked a full length mirror in room, and toast with breakfast
- Reece (10/5): Amazing Stay - Classic historical pub with great B and B rooms to stay the night.
- Milovan (4/5): Its vary basis, disappointing - Not much Its very basic room and facilities, cleaning not
done, cold breakfast in funny hours
- Carole (7/5): Good - Room was adequate for one night, staff were great. Problem with shower either very hot or cold couldn't get an even temperature.
Noise from neighbouring bar wad difficult to cope with at 2.00 in the morning
- Cheryl (9/5): Superb - The pub and staff are lovely. The cooked breakfast included in the price was great.
We ate there one evening and even though the menu had a small choice it was a nice meal The weather was sooooo hot we could have done with a fan in the room
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michelle (10/5): Perfection❤️ - Best place in have stayed. I travel the uk and will say this is the most friendly place I have ever stayed. The food is amazing. Better then any food have ever eaten in a pub setting. The breakfast was amazing. The people are soooo friendly ❤️
- Daniel (9/5): Superb -
- Simon (7/5): Adequate accommodation near town centre. - Convenience for town centre. Access and exit was easy. Good car parking facilities. Television signal was intermittent.
- Anonymous (7/5): Good -
- Jackie (2/5): Very poor - Not much room had not been cleaned bucket was full of rubbish bathroom bin was not emptied half full of Ladies pads also breakfast was not good either
- Don (5/5): Cheap, basic accommodation in a good location. - Good shower, manager tended quickly to an issue we had with the bedding, Quiet, Late check out, Location and car park. Outside seating area full of cigarette stubs.
- Kathryn (8/5): Very good -
- Mrsbluenose (1/5): Thank god only one night - Good location, easy parking. Where to start? Disorganised welcome, dirty room, no toilet paper, filthy toilet, dirty glass, used teaspoon, dishevelled bed, no bedside lamps, grubby carpet, no bathroom mirror, fixed hairdryer unusable as socket broken. Breakfast basic and looked thrown together.
This is a decent looking drinking pub that should not be offering accommodation.
- Tatjana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (2/5): With the bed being so uncomfortable and no loo paper I got up and left at 4 am.i think that sums up my experience - Location, the only member of staff on duty was friendly. The notes say the pub dates back to 1640. I think the bed did too. It was unbelievably uncomfortable. There was no loo paper in the en-suite and the pub door was closed and locked before I realised. There was no food as there were no staff to cook. Last orders were called at 10pm.
- Denise (7/5): Good -
- Rob (7/5): Good -
- Theresa (10/5): Great place for a short break - The pub is a lovely old place with very helpful staff. Plenty of parking. Breakfast was freshly cooked and plentiful
- Roald (10/5): Great! - Amazing building with a lot of character. The rooms are very nice and spacious
- Robert (5/5): Could be a perfectly fine budget option, but needs more thought - and the smell is unacceptable. - The staff were warm and friendly, the room was of a good size and clean. The pub building has character and is very conveniently situated. There was an extremely strong and unpleasant smell - a bit like that which lingers in industrial rubbish containers - in the corridor outside the room and on the stairs. I am surprised that the cheerful staff member who showed me to my room didn't at least apologise for it - she must have been aware of it. It was less evident within the room, but still very much there every time I stepped outside it.
The pub itself seemed no longer to serve food in the evening and had a pretty uninspiring range of beers. Evidently local drinkers felt so too, as by about 9pm on a Saturday the bars were almost empty. (Fortunately, there turned out to be a decent, and reasonably priced Nepalese restaurant literally next door.)
The room was essentially nice , but soap dispensers and coffee jar were almost empty.
I actually required an early breakfast on Sunday but was the only person there for it, unless anyone else turned up fir the final quarter of an hour. Presumably other guests thought 7-8am rather early - as normally would I.
- Ramshead (7/5): Good - A friendly welcome and great breakfast Room hadn't been prepared so had a little wait but had a pint in the bar while waiting.
There was no evening meals being served, although it's situated next to a chip shop so no big deal.
- Robert (4/5): Basically, you get what you pay for. The day/evening staff were very friendly and helpful when aske - Plentiful food, possibly a bit much, very crowded plate. Service odd, cooked breakfast presented immediately, glasses but no juice. We may have wanted cereal to start. We had trouble getting into the breakfast area as the connecting B&B door was locked and us and another guest spent a few minutes trying to obtain entry having left by the side door. The server of the breakfast was not friendly, hardly civil.
- Anthony (7/5): Good -
- Ian (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (8/5): Very good - Great breakfast
- Alan (4/5): Disorganised and suffering with road noise. - Location was good for us regarding our journey from the SW to the NE of the Uk. Although it is on a busy road so very noisy with traffic to late into the night and from early morning. The traffic noise woke us early in the morning. We were also woken by a very loud motorbike leaving the pub late at night.
The mattress was a bit past its best. We were given a key fob entry to the building which refused to work.
We asked the venue when we booked over a week in advance could we have decaf tea and coffee due to a heart intolerance. We received a message back indicating this would be no problem. There was no decaf in the room x in fact there was no tea at all. We asked a member of staff who said he would try and find some. He disappeared we thought to get some but failed to return.
In the morning breakfast had been precooked and plated up. Next to no milk for tea and coffee (still no decaf, so not enough for both of us have cereal. We again highlighted this and was told they were getting some. Again, it never arrived. We also asked again for decaf and was told they didn’t have any even though I had a message in the booking to say yes they would have some. This member of staff the. Said was it his fault and he knew nothing about it, This was a bit strange why they couldn’t just pop to a local shop of get the bits as the pub was right next to the town shopping area.
So all in all the place was disorganised and suffered with road noise.
- Karl (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (6/5): Pleasant -
- John (9/5): Great place to stay, free parking & close to centre of Bromsgrove, ideal - Great hidden little gem, prefect place to stay while breaking the journey from Lancashire to Weston Supermare, nice friendly staff who couldn't do enough to assist. Evening meal was perfect and nice quiet room and then to top it off a very nice breakfast before the final stage of our journey. None to mention
- Anthony (7/5): Good - Location was good , missed breakfast as was a bit too early for a weekend. No food apart from breakfast.
- Elaine (7/5): Good Location - Location and breakfast. Abruptly being told to vacate the bar at 10:30 pm
- Philip (7/5): Very friendly Staff - Friendliness of staff & service. Good full English breakfast. Door lock to our room (number 1) had been poorly repaired.
- Cliff (9/5): Superb - Lovely location very clean
- Claire (5/5): Basic but fair price, nice staff. - Basic, good size, well cooked, but poor quality sausages. Noisy
- Rebecca (8/5): Very good -
- Jo (4/5): B&B, without the B - a missed opportunity to experience the warmth that other customers rave about. - As this is a very, very old building you have some great original beams and features (including a sloping floor). The bed was bouncy, warm and comfortable, as were the pillows, and there was some useful storage for clothes including some drawers and a rail for shirts and jackets. The location was good for us as we have a relative in a nearby care home and we had free parking and wifi. The bartender in the evenings, Blayk, was friendly and knowledgeable. The caretaker/maintenance chap in the mornings, Elvis, was also very helpful and attentive when we had issues with breakfast on the first morning. We must have arrived on a weird week as didn't get the same Ye Olde Black Cross experience as dozens of other customers, unfortunately. It goes from small things such as the towels being small (especially when one person is 6 foot) to a non-working side-table lamp, broken radiator, no strip light bulb in the bathroom, a falling-off towel holder, furred-up extractor vent, bare bulbs as overhead lights (finesse is lacking). With the table lamp, we had brought it down it down to the bar, asking barman Blayk if we could we have another, please? He was accommodating and around 30 minutes later another was brought up but that also didn't work. By this point it was 9.50 so we left it until the next morning. We had a problem with our breakfast order. On checking in, Blayk mentioned that breakfast was served 7am-8am and we had to pre-order, so we did, and said we'd be down about 7.50am. The next morning and were downstairs just before 8am. The place was empty apart from a small child. We couldn't smell cooking, and walked around calling out for assistance. No reply. I called the pub, and the phone rang on the bar next to me so I left a message. Then we saw Elvis walk by, a caretaker/cleaner who told us that as we'd not been in the bar at 7.50 there would be no breakfast. This was odd to us, as we'd ordered it - and it seems we were the only people booked in. We asked if we could at least get a cup of tea - there was a hot water urn out - and maybe some toast? Elvis said he'd text the owners, and he got us some tea things for a cuppa, but he had no reply from the owners. We didn't order breakfast again for the next two days, too unreliable. And when we brought our second non-working lamp down a few hours later, the barman couldn't have been less interested in us. Today we checked out, leaving our key with no one in an empty bar. We still haven't heard back from the managers about breakfast that day, and feel pretty neglected.
- Ewan (8/5): Very good -
- Steven (9/5): Location five stars and stay also five stars - Location is really good and breakfast was fantastic. Every thing was perfect.
- Paul (9/5): Clean room and brilliant staff - Theres alot of history in this place. I think built in the 1600s. Rumours are its haunted. Theres a well near the bar apparently peoole were hung there. Gruesome but fascinating
Bonus that breakfast was included even a full english. For the price unbeatable Wasnt really anything tbh
- Keith, (10/5): Exceptional - Staff couldn't have been more helpful. Even had a nice chat about the history of the place. Lovely guy called Elvis made the stay feel very friendly Nothing to dislike for me.
- Tony (9/5): Haunted pub with lots of character - An interesting, haunted pub with loads of character and characters. The bed was very comfortable, we enjoyed a great night's sleep. Great value , breakfast included. Limited menu for the evening meal.
- Neil (7/5): Has a lot of potential, beautiful building, great breakfast. - The location is great, a short walk to the town centre and all the facilities this has to offer. Ample parking to the rear of the pub too. Beautiful building with a lot of history, also offering a good menu should you wish you eat on site. Included breakfast was really good too. Only a few points to improve the stay.
The room and en-suite:
The mattress could do with being renewed in room 1, the springs are not holding up, if you sit down on the bed, you hit the frame.
The adhesive pictures in the bathroom should be removed, serves no purpose and makes it look shabby.
Breakfast:
The breakfast service was a little disorganised, no welcome or instruction and no staff around to greet. Appears as though it was an afterthought, no tea spoons for the tea/coffee. As mentioned above, the breakfast was really nice though.
Security:
The rooms have digital coded locks installed, whilst these serve a purposes to allow users access with no key, this type used are longwinded to change the code on a possible daily basis, ideal for a long term rental, but not a hotel. I fear that if I went to the hotel at any point, I could let myself into the hotel area and gain entry to the room easily using the same code. I can understand that the hotel may have had people not return, or lose keys in the past, however a change of cylinder when this happens, at the cost of the resident who loses the key, would ensure the rooms are more secure for current guests. Room 1 requires a repair to the door frame as this is not very secure at present.
- Samantha (8/5): Very good -
- Wood (10/5): Exceptional -
- Philip (8/5): Very good - Lovely (very) old pub, great atmosphere and team. Nice food, easy parking. Comfortable bed, quiet location.
Close to the canal network, which is great for cycling and walking.
Bonus for me when I stayed was a brilliant band.
- Chris (8/5): Very good -
