Guest Reviews
- Amy (10/5): - Such a lovely cottage, with everything we needed. So clean and comfortable.
- ysella (9/5): - Wow this exceeded our expectations and felt delighted to have this place for two nights. Although somewhat remote, it’s actually pretty conveniently located to Thurso (~10mins away) and was ideal as a base to explore the area including John o Groats etc. Log burner and the wood appreciated for the chillier evenings. Would happily return. Thank you. The postcode from website took us to the pods! So clearer directions (if not coming from south) would have been good.
- Janice (9/5): A truly delightful cottage, tastefully and thoughtfully equipped throughout. - The location was an excellent base for all our needs. Despite there being a large log burner in the sitting room there were no logs or kindling in the cottage to light it. We contacted the owner who replied promptly. We were informed that logs and kindling were available in the barn along the road and we could go and fetch them ourselves. As we are 3 friends of a certain vintage this proved a bit of an adventure! However, once the fire was lit it was fabulous.

- brian (10/5): Fantastic property and exceeded our expectations. Would def go back! RECOMMENDED - The property is stunning and clear owner took pride in finishing this - both decor and furniture & fittings. It has a fantastic feel and you can expect a relaxing, comfortable time here. Nothing - it is excellent
- Mark (10/5): Highly recommended - A lovely cottage, and would highly recommend it. Quiet location, but close to everything you need. No negatives
- Vicki (10/5): If we ever return to Scotland , it will be on the list. - Location was good- Cottage was fantastic - loved waking up to cows mooing- took us back to our childhood.
Lots of thoughtful little extras. Signage could have been larger - missed it even with GPS.
The cottage didn't have the Shephards Rest name - we were confused and not sure we were in the correct place.
- Gisella (10/5): Una bella scoperta... - La casa è molto spaziosa e ben organizzata per un soggiorno perfetto. Rimane un po' decentrata, ma si tratta di una casa in aperta campagna.
- Alexandra (10/5): Great Stay - Excellent house with everything you need. Clean and cosy.
- Amy (10/5): Fabulous cottage - Fabulous cottage that was so cozy and warm! Great location just out of town and feeling so remote. Very clean with excellent facilities and everything + more you could want
- Spray (10/5): -
- LO (10/5): Super endroit pour se reposer et profiter du Nord de l’Ecosse - Calme confortable cosy accueillant bien équipé la literie était très bien.
- KONSTANTINOS (10/5): Very nice stay in a wonderful cottage in Thurso - We really enjoyed our stay in this self-catering cottage very close to Thurso. It had everything we needed, and the owner was very helpful and kind. This accommodation will be one of our first choices the next time we visit the area.
- Diane (8/5): Fabulous find, in a super location, great for exploring Caithness and Sutherland. - Easy to find, lovely location and this is our second visit, great for the dog as garden fully enclosed, nice to see the dark skies from the garden and the aurora too.
House had all that any guests would want and probably more.
Lovely - we will be back again. I have no complaints at all.
It was so good that we came back - that says it all.
- Sylvia (10/5): Fabulous stay - well worth the money - So comfortable with very stylish furnishings.
Everything we needed Couldn’t find an information book for how to leave the cottage - whether to strip beds and where to leave used towels
- Rhoda (9/5): Lovely cottage with great facilities - Spacious and comfortable cottage with hot tub.
Beautiful and quiet position outside Thurso. Televisions not working, host fitted up a small monitor the second day. Would have benefitted from an information pack with instructions on hot tub use, rubbish removal, etc
- Walker (9/5): Clean and tidy and everything we needed for our stay - Everything clean and tidy N/A
- David (10/5): A perfect cosy stay on the North Coast just outside Thurso - Property is comfortable, clean and even better than the photos make it look. Every room is ensuite and there is an extra shower room, so no shortage of facilities. Location is good, you are only just outside of Thurso.
We had a couple of days before we went onto Orkney and it was perfect. There is a hot tub too!
- Adityesh (10/5): - Location and amenities were amazing One of the bedroom shower drain was blocked
- richard (10/5): A great escape in a beautiful modern cottage - Beautiful location and quiet Nothing, it was spot on

- Melissa (9/5): - Lovely surroundings. We especially enjoyed the sounds of the sheep in the nearby fields. They were close enough to make for an authentic farmhouse experience, but far enough that we weren’t bothered by any unpleasantness you may get on a farm. The house was clean and very comfortable. We especially appreciated that all bedrooms were en suite! One of the showers had an issue with a temperature control that wasn’t working correctly. Thankfully there were plenty of other showers to use.
There wasn’t any binder with checkout instructions in the house, making for some confusion. The communication from the host to our questions wasn’t exactly prompt, it was in fact delayed enough to start to be concerning. Thankfully we didn’t have any urgent problems so it didn’t cause any issues.
- Katrina (10/5): Clean, comfortable spacious stay in stylish venue. - This was an ideal property to share with our friends after completing Lands End to John O’Groats. Both couples had lovely rooms with en suites and there was plenty of space to prepare food, eat together and relax, everyone having a comfy chair afterwards. The property would be equally suitable for a family because of the additional triple bedroom. The quality of all fittings and furnishings was excellent and the whole venue was immaculate.
- Jen (10/5): Much appreciation for the care and hight standard of this home aways from home. - Lovely place. Accommodating hosts. Thank you for making this stay precious and lovely.
- Fiona (10/5): Would certainly be back again - Just loved this fabulous house. Excellent bedrooms with lovely bedlinen. Lots of fluffy towels. Everything you needed in a superb kitchen. Well fenced off garden. We were able to walk down the farm lanes with our dogs on their leads. Hot tub was available A few logs in the basket would’ve been nice. Salt pepper and cooking oil would’ve been good too.
- Neil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sheila (10/5): Cosy in Thurso - Generous space, nice furnishings
Wood burning stove
Well equipped. Warm
Lovely situation Finding it - you sent the wrong instructions
- Carol (9/5): Very, very comfortable. - More help with changing the temperature on the radiators. No hot tub or information!
- Ian (9/5): Weil appointed peaceful location. - It was very peaceful and quiet and away from the road. Good bedrooms all with en suite facilities. Good kitchen, Couldn't light the log burner as we didn't have a lighter or matches. Left a note for the owners.
- Janet (10/5): Exceptional -
- Conor (10/5): Perfect country stay for the family with hot tub and farm views! - Amazing location on a beautiful farm, but still very close to Thurso for shopping. We spent loads of time exploring the north coast, and even did a day trip to Orkney (from Scrabster, only 10 min away). Very very comfortable, had everything we needed, and the hot tub was an amazing feature!! Lots of amazing memories made with the family :) Would've loved to have a Welcome binder with information about trash/recycling, hot tub instructions, heating, laundry, wifi, arrival/departure info, etc. We managed perfectly fine but it's always nice to have a reference for everything.
- Emma (10/5): Hidden gem. - Great! Beautiful layout and location. Lots of firewood provided. Tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits were lovely addition - thank you! We would have liked to have had extra bin bags so we could have tidied up more before leaving.
Firelighters would have been handy but we have a fire at home so it was fine for us to get going without.
- Sarah (10/5): Cosy home in a beautiful location - Lovely home, conveniently located. Very cosy and a great place to relax.
- Diane (10/5): Absolutely what we needed with family and dogs - wonderful place to chill out with fabulous views. - Location was wonderful especially as I had two dogs with me, fully fenced and dog proof garden - facilities were amazing - everything you could possibly want - bonus of hot tub too - we didn't use that as we didn't have time.
The house is stunning and I am just delighted to have found it and been able to stay there - we will definitely be back.
- Mcalpine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional! - The Shepherd's Rest is a stunning place to stay in. The cottage is located in rural area with sheeps and cows as the neighbours. The house is spotless clean and comfortable for group of 6 people. The village views are breathtaking. Evening in the jacuzzi or with the fireplace makes everything even more perfect. Highly recommend!
- Marie (10/5): No Shepherd ever Rested so well :) - We were provided with clear directions to the property. Wonderfully large, comfortable & warm lounge/kitchen/dining area was our first impression inside. (The kitchen is well set out & well equipped).
The 3 fabulous bedrooms each with their own en-suite were such luxury!!
(If it had been warmer weather & we had a longer stay, we would have loved to try out the BBQ & hot tub) There was nothing we didn't like!
- Eva (9/5): Superb -
- Sarah (9/5): Home away from home - Really lovely property beautifully decorated and fitted out. Very comfy beds and good bathroom to guest ratio. Lots of logs left for us to use the woodburner. This was much appreciated as it was a little colder than usual for June.
Also appreciated having a footstool as I'm quite short and often find I can't touch the floor on standard sofas Could of done with some welcome information explaining what to do with bins etc.
- Sally (10/5): Chilled weekend away 😌 - The house was warm, clean, modern and every bedroom having an en-suite was just perfect. Surrounded by fields and beautiful views, we could even see The Orkney Islands 🏝 literally 2 miles away from Tesco for all the essentials!! We had the fire lite every night and it warmed the whole house, great find, a great location, and definitely be staying here again Loosing track of time as it was still light at midnight 😆
- John (8/5): Lovely a wonderful stay - Large , comfortable and well equipped for a family( 6 ) even a tea pot !! Very clean.
Fantastic to relax. Plastic wine glasses ? !
I understand breakages may happen with glass but ☹️NO
- Bartosz (10/5): Great place, close to a place where you can do some shopping and to quite a few highland-must-see places. - Great standard. Jacuzzi made our days after hikes:)
- Simon (10/5): Very good and much better than a lot of accommodation in the area. I've stayed in plenty - Clean well appointed house in great location for Thurso and NC500. Nice big bedrooms each with ensuite bathrooms.
Good kitchen and living room area with hot tub in a shelter out the back Couple of little maintenance issues with loose cupboard handles and toilet seat in the main bedroom
- Sheena (10/5): Amazing downtime in complete comfort - This is an amazing break away from every day life. We had a fantastic family break where we were altogether but still had our own space with all the rooms having en suits. We have two dogs who also loved the big outdoor space and the hit tub was the icing on the cake. That we didn’t stay longer
- Candice (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thomas (10/5): great place to stay. I would recommend adding a photo of the hot tub as we wasn’t expecting this with the stay and it wa - beautifully decorated, comfortable with all conveniences. hot tub was an added bonus!
- Turton (10/5): Thie accommodation was a highlight of our stay! - The location was iclose to Thurso and John O’Groats. The property was immaculate and would highly recommend. There was nothing not to like about this property.
- Christine (10/5): Very relaxing, perfect place to chill. - Excellent retreat for the family, all three bedrooms of good size and ensuite in each. hot tub was great. plenty of space for the family dog to run around in and very safe as fenced all around. Our little granddaughter could also run about without fear of her wondering off. the outdoor table an chairs perfectly positioned for the sun and some shelter from the inevitable windy days. spacious living/dinning area with lots of utensils and crockery to have a home cooked meal. Very comfy 3 piece suite. Within walking distance of Thurso and far enough away from the main road so no traffic noise. would definitely recommend. We were six adults, 16month baby and a dog. perfect size for us. there was nothing we didn't like but suggest that there is some sort of mesh on the gate because the dog managed to get under it and went up the lane. Oh and perhaps a highchair, although we brought our own booster seat so it wasn't an issue.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional - Spacious everything you could want
Beautiful house. Would be great for a family or group of friends.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay Couldn't find a hairdryer
- Anonymous (10/5): Thank you for an amazing stay! Can’t wait to return. - Wonderful location and so comfortable for all. What a treat to each have an ensuite!
- Sarah (9/5): Superb -
